Reports
Chairperson
It has been an enjoyable and busy year at 1st Nanpantan. I have continued to see how the success of our Group depends entirely on having a bunch of energetic, enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, including:
-
Group Scout Leader, Assistant GSL, Section Leaders, Section Assistants and Young Leaders who put in hours and hours of work each week to create and run exciting weekly activities, events, camps, parades and celebrations which benefit the squirrels, cubs, beavers and scouts.
-
Fundraising Co-ordinator, and a team of volunteers (beavers, cubs, scouts, parents, relatives, …) who run a successful range of events and activities, which is evidenced by our increased fundraising each year, with a particular mention to the ever-popular Charnwood Challenge.
-
Executive committee members: the Group Treasurer for applying his financial skills, the Group Secretary for taking high quality minutes at our regular committee meetings, the Subscription Secretary for the tricky task of monitoring and chasing subscription fees and the Quartermaster for keeping excellent stores and maintaining equipment
-
This year there has been significant work and progress by our Building Sub Committee, through the Sub-Committee Chair, the GSL and other valued volunteers who have made great strides in readying the land, progressing the sale and obtaining costs and plans for: the demolition, the foundations, the build, the project management and the provision of services.
I am now completing my fifth year since I was elected as Chair Person and this will be my final AGM as I am stepping down. I have enjoyed the last 5 years because of the opportunity to work with fantastic and dedicated people and the brilliant experiences that we witness for our squirrels, cubs, beavers and scouts.
I am reassured that there is already someone willing, able and enthusiastic about scouting who has put their name forward as chair and that together with an excellent GSL and Assistant GSL and a dedicated Trustee Board the group will be taken forward positively and in very capable hands.
Adam Crawford - 1st Nanpantan Chair - adamcrawford@nanpantanscouts.org.uk
Group Scout Leader
We currently have 132 members within our 7 sections.
At Nanpantan we try and create a full and varied programme with indoor and outdoor activities at the hut and out and about, to give the young people great fun & adventure in their Scouting journey. Each section will give more updates in their reports.
This year we have our Group Camp where all sections will enjoy various activities through the weekend at the Oaks in Charnwood Campsite, 23 - 25th June 2023.
Last year we opened the brand-new Scout section Squirrels for 4 – 6 year olds, led by a great new team of leaders and parent helpers. It’s gone from strength-to-strength and we now have another leader joining their team.
The Building Project is in progress, and we are still looking for a buyer for the land so that we have the funds to start the demolition and re construction. We have a dedicated Building Sub-Committee and are always looking for more support if you’re interested.
We currently have leaders working tirelessly in all sections, but encourage additional people to join us, so that we can ensure the continuance of the Group in the years ahead. Can you help us? We are a very friendly group of leaders!
6
I wish to thank our Leaders and Section Helpers, plus the hard-working Exec for their impressive dedication to provide great scouting experiences for our young people over the past year. We also appreciate the engagement from all the families of our Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs & Scouts!
As our Chair, Adam Crawford is retiring from the role this year, I’d like to extend the thanks of the group for the time and energy he has put in to Nanpantan. It is greatly appreciated!
Thanks again to everyone: kids, leaders, exec members and families. We feel that Nanpantan is a very special group, and the spirit of our members and the energy and ideas of our volunteers is what keeps it going.
Carl Travis-Roberts - 1st Nanpantan Group Scout Leader carltravis-roberts@nanpantanscouts.org.uk
Squirrels – Thursday
We are thrilled that in October 2022 Loughborough's first Squirrel Scout unit opened with sixteen 4 - 6 year old children. Since that time we have had a few move on to Beavers and are welcoming new members each term.
The Squirrels have an hour-long meeting on a Thursday and have enjoyed playing games, doing crafts and reading stories together. We have planted Oak trees for the Oaks campsite (which to our surprise have sprouted!), designed our own aeroplanes and animal habitats, shared our favourite books, built dens, learnt to make fruit kebabs and chocolate nests and have most recently had a visit from a local police officer! Of course we've had a campfire and roasted marshmallows.... and even made a 'fire-free' mini campfire to take home!
Many of the Squirrels have completed awards and badges, including many of them gaining their All Together Award and their Brilliant Builder and Let's Celebrate badges, amongst others. They celebrated the King's coronation with an outdoor picnic, made lanterns for Chinese New Year, took part in the District St George's Day, put together a fabulous tree for the Christmas Tree Festival, and were proud to parade with the rest of the Nanpantan Scout Group on Remembrance Sunday. The Squirrels have a Lego STEAM challenge weekend coming up in June and are very excited to be joining in with the Group Camp by joining for the day on the Saturday.
It was a risk to set up a new section, but it has been wonderful to see such young children embrace the spirit of Scouting. A huge thank you must go to the other leaders at Nanpantan and all our volunteers for helping us find our feet and allowing us to join in so enthusiastically! Looking forward to the further adventures with our Squirrel Scouts in the coming year!
Jo Pellereau - Section Leader

Beavers – Wednesday
We kick started the year enjoying a joint Woodland themed camp at Oaks in Charnwood with the Friday night gang. Grass sledging was definitely a highlight alongside shooting, mini cross bows and emoji-teering. In weekly meetings, we have worked towards the My Skills, My World and Adventure Challenge badges as well as our cycling, air activities, builders and creative badges. We enjoy getting out and about as much as possible and have made the most of the countryside with various hikes throughout the year. It’s always more fun when there is a chippy stop at the end! Archery at the Oaks was great fun and of course the annual bike ride was well attended by Beavers and parents alike. A first for us was a visit to Saint Mary’s in Charnwood where we were warmly welcomed and treated to a hot chocolate round the campfire. Thank you to all our parent volunteers- we would not be able to escape off site without them. Thank you also to our wonderful young leaders, Isaac and Katie, who help make weekly meetings so much more fun.
Sophie Diaper and Susan Smith
Beavers – Friday
Our Beaver Colony has had another busy year. Since the last AGM, the Beavers have earned 153 badges!
6 Beavers have earned their Chief Scout Bronze Awards – this is the highest award a Beaver Scout can earn. This is a significant achievement and rewards the commitment and hard work the children have put in during their time at Beavers. Congratulations to all who have received this award.
Other badges awarded include Adventure, Outdoors, Skills, Teamwork, Personal and World Challenge badges, and Faith, Hikes, Money Skills, Nights Away, Digital Citizen and Health and Fitness badges.
With the end of covid restrictions, we were also able to camp at the Oaks for 2 fun filled days of activities with Wednesday Beavers. We visited the Oaks twice and tried our skills on the Jungle Trail, Bouldering and Black Hole, and we had a great time indoor green bowling.
We're looking forward to the Group Camp in June, which will be another busy and noisy adventure! It'll be an opportunity to spend time with friends who have moved on to Cubs.
Finally, we would like to say a big thank you to those parents who have volunteered to help on activities such as hikes and visits. This is always very welcome and helps support the leaders immensely. If there are any parents who would like help more formally, please come and speak to us at collection time and we would be delighted to advise you.
Friday Beaver leaders’ team.
Craig, Clare, David, Nick and Jyoti
Cubs – Monday (Nanpanthers Pack)
It’s been another great year, as a pack we have used the Nanpanther mantra ‘Fun through learning’.
We met at the Jungle Trail at the Oaks for a fun evening, the Cubs enjoyed it thoroughly. We went to see the artwork that had been put up at the Outwoods, it was a good excuse for a walk and the Cubs finished the night by playing on the park. We ended the Summer term on a high with the annual Chippy hike, it is a favourite!
During the winter term we had a trip to Bawdon Lodge where they had a tour and were able to go around the lovely grounds. It was organised with one of our Cub parents – big thank you to them. We had a Halloween party where there was fancy dress, music, games and party dances. We ended the term with the ‘Christmas Party’ where the Cubs did Karoke and had mocktails – it was very entertaining!
8
We had one of the Cubs showing how to use charcoal after we discovered how good he was at art. The other Cubs listened well to them and made good attempts at their animal drawings.
We asked the Cubs to collect empty milk bottles to attempt to build an igloo, we had a lot and on the night we ended up building an ice wall where we managed to put 18 Cubs inside it – it was a challenge and a half!
We had a night where I bought in Scouting memorabilia from 50 years ago, I was impressed with the interest shown by the Cubs. They also played traditional games.
The Cubs enjoyed another camp at Topstones where they stayed in the Pods, it was a weekend of fun and we even found time to have a full Roast dinner on the Saturday night. The favourite activity was the adult size go-karts where we had different track layouts.
We would like to thank you for the collaboration and the enthusiasm of your children and yourselves as parents/guardians to help us deliver a fun packed program.
I would also like to say a huge thankyou to my Assistant Cub Leaders Louise and Alex who always ensure the Cubs get the most out of the meetings. We also have 3 new Young Leaders Madi, Caitlin and Tobias who have been helping us. They have been a great asset to the pack as they relate to the Cubs well and are very supportive.
Also…if you feel you could be a helper to the Nanpanthers then please feel free to contact me. Thank you for listening.
Malcolm Newton and team. Nanpanther CSL.
Cubs - Thursday
Another year has raced past with lots of fun and adventures for Thursday cubs. We have had 24 cubs for most of the year with several also moving onto scouts during that time. We waved goodbye to Hari as he headed off to college and have welcomed Abi as a new young leader with our group. Ben also joined us for a while as part of his DoE award.
September saw the first outdoor tent camp for some time – with a Wild West theme. Activities included the buzzer game, backwards cooking of sponge cakes, axe throwing, den building, climbing, wide games, and culminated in a popular rodeo barn with loads of activities on the Saturday night. A couple of scamps were still awake at 4.20am (!) on the Friday night but all had a fab time and the leaders have just about recovered
Group meetings have continued to be as varied and active as we can make them. Activities have included the much-anticipated chippy hike, the communicator badge, and board game fun. We have learnt about healthy eating and how the body works, some first aid and knots. We have also visited the fire station, celebrated Australia Day and taken a trip to the multi faith centre at Loughborough University. We have made Christmas wreaths, unseen Lego models, bird feeders, rocky road, Mother’s Day origami cards, pioneering towers and mostly edible pancakes.
Plans for this term include bike riding, the photography and athletics badges, hiking, den building and the much-loved water night to end before the summer break.
According to OSM 171 badges have been achieved by Thursday cubs since September 2022 and two cubs have achieved their Chief Scout Silver this year so well done to them. Several have gone onto scouts, so I hope they are enjoying that experience. Everyone is also looking forward to the whole group camp in June with everyone from squirrels to explorers involved!

Preeti Kitching
Scouts – Wednesday (Longcliffe Troop)
Over the past year, Wednesday Scouts have stayed strong at around 24 Scouts and gained three new adult volunteers.
We have taken part in a joint expedition with Tuesday scouts and ran a second to Nottingham. With Twelve Scouts completing their Chief Scouts’ Gold award.
Over the past year scouts have learnt how to paint and play Warhammer, have enjoyed air rifle shooting and learnt different parts of the survival skills badge.
Longcliffe Troop Scouts also took part in splash camp in September and the Oaks campsite Shooting and Archery competition in October.
Thanks to the other Leaders for their support in running activities.
Yours in Scouting

Fundraising Report 2022/23
Current funds = £29,055
Our fundraising efforts have continued this year, focusing a significant effort on raising funds for our new facilities.
We are delighted to confirm that we have been successful in being awarded £65,000 from central
government as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund . The fund is part of the levelling up agenda, where monies are being invested into community spaces and facilities. The Scouting Association have also awarded us a grant of £30,000 towards our build. Both significant contributions to our build funds.
In preparation for the land sale, our infamous fire circle has been moved to its new home. This was achieved for little cost, helped by Travis Perkins donating a mini digger and driver and Tarmac supplying the stones required . The fire continues to be a much loved activity with all of our groups – and we very much appreciated by visitors when we hosted the Carols on the Move events on a chilly December evening! We have also benefited from the following fund raising activities, monies from which support the day to day running costs of activities with the children.
-
Charnwood Challenge – September 2022 - £1900 – It was a lovely sunny day for this ever popular annual event, with over 150 runners and walkers taking part again. Funds were raised via entry fees and refreshments. Thank you everyone who kindly supported this event in a wide variety of ways, including those who donated prizes too.
-
Car park marshalling – £1000 - A team of hardy volunteers continue to help marshal cross country running events at Prestwold Hall. For this we receive a monetary donation - making all the rain worth it!
-
AGM 2022 - £635 – We welcomes over 100 visitors to our AGM in 2022. Stalls and refreshment were enjoyed in the sun, all topped off by our annual Hook-a-duck raffle – and our Chairman getting very wet in the process!
-
Hathern Gardens – June 2022 – £134 - We welcomed over 100 visitors to a parents garden as part of this event, with many enjoying a cuppa and cakes in the sunshine whilst the little people enjoyed the tree house, rope swing and sand pit.
-
Easyfundraising – £30 / month We have continued to be part of this scheme, with 72 supporters. Now over 7000 online retailers support this scheme, donating a percentage of any online purchasers to our cause – at no cost to the buyer. If you’re an online shopper please do sign up – it’s entirely free and very easy: easyfundraising.org.uk

Charnwood community lottery – £35/month We continue to be part of the Charnwood Community Lottery and have had some great winners in the last few months. For each £1 ticket purchased, we receive 60p. Thank you to our regular supporters. Fancy trying your luck too? www.charnwoodlottery.co.uk

Building Sub-Committee Update
As you may be aware, Nanpantan Scout Group is committed to replacing our building (which is clearly showing signs of age) with a brand new facility for us and the wider community. This project is being managed by the Building Sub-Committee, a group of parents, leaders and members of the Executive Committee.
Shortly after the last AGM, we received planning approval from Charnwood Borough Council for our new building and for an outline planning application for a house on the land adjacent to our existing building. This land is now fenced off and last September, we accepted an offer on the land from a small local developer. Unfortunately, after several months of hard work to agree legal terms for the sale, the buyer recently withdrew from the sale. The land is now back on the market and we are actively working with the agent to try and secure an alternative buyer.
Over the last few months, we have been working on other aspects of the project, we now have a foundation design and a detailed quote from a local Design and Build company. These latest costs mean we expect to need to source additional funding to fully cover the project. We will continue to fundraise and focus our efforts on finding a buyer for the land after which we will be in a better position to update everyone on timescales.
In the meantime, if you think you can help the Building Committee in any way (e.g. donations of materials from local firms, clearing the existing building, clearing the land sale plot, project management or any other skills that would help), then please reach out to us today at the AGM or via email buildingcommittee@nanpantanscouts.org.uk

Reports

Scouts – Tuesday (Priory Troop)
Priory Troop currently has 14 members. It has once again been a busy year, the Scouts have been working towards their Chief Scout Gold Award, which Isobel Frost, Finnan Christie, Jacob Miles and Alex LawtonDevine all achieving this high award. Well done.

-
Charnwood community lottery – £35/month We continue to be part of the Charnwood Community Lottery and have had some great winners in the last few months.
