Reports
Chairperson
It has been a busy year at 1st Nanpantan and it has been great to see the group get back to a ‘new’ normal , following what has been a difficult period for young people, parents/guardians, scout groups and leaders since the advent of Covid-19.
This year we have seen a wide range of activities at our scout hut, outdoors and at other venues. I continue to be impressed at the expertise and hard work of the enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers who ensure a well-run and effective group continues to thrive at 1[st] Nanpantan.
Each week Section leaders, section assistants and young leaders have put in hours of endeavour to create and run, fun and engaging weekly activities, events, camps, and expeditions which benefit the cubs, beavers and scouts.
We are fortunate to have an excellent Executive Committee who bring their specialist skills to ensure 1[st] Nanpantan is a well-run group. A major change to note for next year is that Caroline Donoghue will be stepping down as subscription secretary after 3 years. The executive and group wish to extend our warm thanks. Caroline has done an excellent job of implementing the online scout payment system, which has made it simpler both to pay and to monitor payments and to receive Gift Aid. We are looking for a new subscription secretary for next year, so if you would be interested in contributing to our excellent scout group through this role, please let myself or Carl know.
The Building Sub-Committee has continued to make good progress, for further details please see the report below.
Despite the pandemic the 1[st] Nanpantan fundraising activities have gone from strength-to-strength. A sincere thank you to all those who have contributed through running events, volunteering, marshalling, baking, running stalls, buying tickets and many other activities..
It is a measure of our Group’s success, that whilst many groups saw a decline in numbers during the pandemic, 1st Nanpantan has had increased interest to join all our sections and we continue to be one of the largest groups in Leicestershire.
Adam Crawford adamcrawford@nanpantanscouts.org.uk
Group Scout Leader
We currently have 121 members within our 6 sections.
At Nanpantan we try and create a full and varied programme with indoor and outdoor activities at the hut and out and about, to give the young people great fun & adventure in their Scouting journey. This year we have enjoyed getting back to face-to-face meetings, camps and days out. The entire group attended a District activity day / weekend at Willesley last weekend. Looking forward we’d like to plan group camp in 2023.
I wish to thank our Leaders and Section Helpers for their tireless dedication to provide amazing programmes for our young people, enabling to gain badges and experiences over the past year. We also appreciate the positive feedback and engagement from all the families of our Beavers, Cubs & Scouts!
We currently have a strong Leadership Team in all sections, but need to plan ahead and encourage additional people to join us, so that we can ensure the continuance of the Group in the years ahead. Can you help us? Scouting is very rewarding and fun!
6
I am looking at opening a new section for scouting: Squirrels which is for 4 to 6yrs but we are still looking for help to start this section up. There is a lot of interest for members to join, so we’re hopefully almost there!
I’d like to welcome our latest leaders to join our group within the last year: Jyoti, who is a Sectional Assistant at our Friday Beaver Section and joined us in August 2021; Alex, who is an Assistant Cub Leader at Monday cubs; and Solomon & Jacob who have been supporting our Scout sections as Explorers and have both come of age to be enrolled as Assistant Scout Leaders.
The Building Project is in progress, and at the time of writing this we are still awaiting planning permission for our new hut. We are hoping to start work in spring 2023. We have a dedicated Building Sub Committee and are always looking for more support if you’re interested.
Thanks again to everyone: kids, leaders, exec members and families. We feel that Nanpantan is a very special group, and the spirit of our members and the energy and ideas of our volunteers is what keeps it going.
Carl Travis-Roberts - 1st Nanpantan Group Scout Leader carltravis-roberts@nanpantanscouts.org.uk
Beavers – Wednesday
Wednesday night Beavers have been delighted to be back to our usual face to face meetings this past year and have taken full advantage of our time together both inside and away from the hut. We took advantage of the good weather in the first half term, getting out and about exploring Beacon Hill and enjoying wide games and the Jungle trail at The Oaks in Charnwood site. The beavers then tried their hand at tent pitching and making their own water filters – the results were very impressive, we will make explorers of them yet!
We value the ideas and interest of the beavers and have held many a ‘log chew’ sessions in order to let them tell us what they would like to do and consequently shape their own scouting journey. Lots of new and imaginative games were shared along with our very first ‘cake in a mug’ attempt. We have been sad to say goodbye to the beavers who moved up this year- they were one of the first groups we were privileged to lead from start to finish. However, it is good to see them develop their confidence and continue their scouting journey as they have moved on to cubs.
To date we have awarded 10 Chief Scouts Bronze Awards which is simply fantastic! Plus we have welcomed several new beavers and our colony continues to be full. Some of our most memorable moments have been colony cycle ride, chip shop hike (always well attended by parents!), science night (how many Mentos do you need to create an explosion), highland games, cheese (well Babybel) rolling, obstacle courses, grassheads and lots of camp fires.
As always we would like to thank all the parents and young leaders who support us on a weekly/termly basis, without which we would not be able to offer such a varied and exciting programme.
Sophie Diaper and Susan Smith - Assistant Section Leaders
Beavers – Friday
We are delighted to report that due to covid restrictions being lifted we have been able to return to faceto-face meetings since September, with between 15-17 beavers showing good attendance throughout. We hope the Beavers have enjoyed the time they have spent with us so far.
We are pleased to say our team of leaders has now increased to four, with Jyoti joining us in September 2021. We are all now very busy learning about the scouting programme and taking part in various training
7
to help support the role. We are also joined by our young leaders who help us to put on a varied, interesting, and balanced programme that we hope the Beavers enjoy. This has helped three of our senior Beavers to achieve their Bronze Chief Scout Award before they moved up to cubs. This is the highest award a Beaver can achieve. All our current Beavers will continue working towards their own awards.
So far this year we have been working upon teamwork, communicator, experiment, global issues, health and fitness, safety, navigator, and adventure badges. For the summer term we are planning to work upon the outdoors, camp craft and adventure badges. Plus, an extra special Queen’s platinum jubilee badge.
We are also looking forward to accompanying fourteen of our Beavers upon a district activity day on the 7th May 2022 at Willesley woodside campsite in Ashby de-la-Zouch. There will also be a further 9 Beavers and their families attending the family walk, BBQ and AGM on 15/5/22.
To date, there are no planned Beaver sleep overs, this is due to none of the current leaders holding their night away certification. We are hopeful to complete the training required to make this possible as soon as practicable.
Finally, we would like to say a big thank you to those parents who have volunteered to help on activities such as hikes. This is always very welcome and helps support the leaders immensely. If there are any parents who would like to offer some help and support either casually, or on a more regular basis please come and speak to us at collection time and we would be delighted to advise you.
Friday Beaver leaders’ team.
Craig, Clare, David, Nick and Jyoti
Cubs – Monday (Nanpanthers Pack)
It’s been another of those funny old years, however as a pack we have carried on through with the Nanpanther mantra ‘Fun through learning’.
We looked forward to being able to meet up again in a safer environment for our weekly meetings and it happened. Being back face to face was good as we met at the Jungle Trail at the Oaks for the first time, the Cubs embraced it well. It was nice to see everyone without a screen round their face. We had an online Bingo night where the Cubs were able to win prizes which were then delivered to their houses. Also we had an online escape room night, the Cubs worked well together and luckily we were able to get out! We ended the Summer term on a high with the annual Chippy hike, the best excuse for a walk!
During the winter term we had an ‘Elastic band night’ where the Cubs could use wooden elastic band guns and crossbows to show their targeting skills, they were quite good at it. We had a Halloween party where there was fancy dress, music, games and party dances. We ended the term with the ‘Skater Party’ where the Cubs showed off their balancing skills.
One game that the Cubs have missed was Dodgeball as it isn’t quite the same online. It has also been fun to use the hut space to be able to do the badgework as the Cubs could work together easier in teams. The Cubs have enjoyed being able to do the ‘Athlete’s Badge’ outside as the better weather came, during the evening we had a visit from the District Commissioner Tony who was able to see the Cubs working well in teams and doing the challenges to the best of their abilities.
As part of their ‘Personal Challenge’ badge we have been running the ‘Listening challenge’, I am excited to see which Cub will win as Louise is collating the data – so I don’t know the scores. Watch this space…
We would like to thank you for the collaboration and enthusiasm of your children and yourselves as parents/guardians to help us deliver a fun packed program. It has made a challenging time easier.
8
I would also like to say a huge thankyou to my Assistant Cub Leader Louise Smith who always ensures the Cubs get the most out of the meetings. I would like to thank Adam who was our Young Leader of a few years as he did his last meeting at the start of this year. I would also like to welcome our new Assistant Cub Leader Alex who has recently joined our pack.
Also…if you feel you could be a helper to the Nanpanthers then please feel free to contact me. Thank you for listening.
Malcolm Newton and team. Nanpanther CSL.
Cubs - Thursday
So, the past year has been more ‘normal’ from a cubs perspective and we’ve managed to keep face to face meetings going as much as possible. We are now up to our fully complement of 24 cubs which is great to see.
The highlight for me so far this year has to be our indoor camp in March. I haven’t been camping with scouting for nigh on 30 years so indoors was a relatively gentle reintroduction. 18 cubs joined us, and we had a ball through our medieval themed weekend. We had wide games aplenty, a scavenger hunt, a night walk, the bouldering wall, archery, cross bows and food galore. Thanks to those parents who helped out with food prep and washing up! We are looking to go tent camping in September so I am sure that will be another highlight.
We are off to the District day this weekend so that will be another new experience for many of our cubs (and me!). Hopefully another dry and sunny day with lots of fun activities to try.
Group meetings have continued to be as varied and active as we can make them. Activities have included the much-loved chippy hike, a blind folded obstacle course, road safety walk, a bike ride, water activities, a church visit, Easter cake decorating and making paracord bracelets to name just a few. We have also tried lawn bowls, visited the Great Central Railway, had a Halloween night and learnt about Diwali. We have made catapults, newspaper towers, Easter cards and mostly edible food.
Plans for this term include bike riding, scientist activities, the athletics badge, some backwards cooking and camp gadgets. Plus some pond dipping, orienteering and den building off site. Hopefully we will get some nice weather to go along with it.
Three cubs have achieved their Chief Scout Silver this year so well done to them. Several have also gone onto scouts, so I hope they are enjoying that experience.
Jo, Carl, Richard, Nick & Hari
Scouts – Tuesday (Priory Troop)
Priory Troop currently has 19 members. It has been a busy year with face-to-face meetings changing as Covid -19 restrictions change from only being able to see half the troop at a time to finally being allowed to have the whole troop back together. The Scouts have been busy working towards their Chief Scout Gold Award, which Matthew Warhurst, Miles Foord and Euan Rhodes all achieving this high award. Well done.
As the restrictions have allowed year, we have been able to do more of our adventurous activities while still keeping precautions in place, from County Splash Day and Scogui night hike where one of our teams came in second place, well done Wander Walkers. We also got an expedition out, which is one of the last challenge badges the scouts do to gain their CSG.
9
We have done many things this year from the scouts volunteering at the Oaks, clearing holly and again helping at the campsites Rise and Shine event, helping out at Charnwood Challenge event running the water station, helping with fundraising at the Christmas fayre where the scouts made many wonderful items and ran a car wash to making and flying kites at Bradgate park and lots of team building activities.
We had a young leader join us this year, who has now turned 18 so joins as a full leader, welcome Jacob. I would like to thank Rachel, Ed, Adam and Jacob for all their hard work and support through the year.
Preeti Kitching
Scouts – Wednesday (Longcliffe Troop)
Wednesday Scouts (Longcliffe Troop) have stayed at a steady number over the past year.
We came back face-to-face last June and have completed lots of activities and badges including paracord poppies, photography and Farming badges.
We have a group of 11 scouts that are close to completing their Chief Scouts Gold Award after completing their Expedition in March 2022.
10
We look forward to the new scouts that will join after the summer and what adventures we can offer them.
Would like to thank Hayley for joining the team for the past year and a thank you to Nick and Oliver for the continued support with assistance from Josh and Solomon (Young Leaders)
Yours in Scouting

-
The majority of Subs payments continue to be made via OSM with the remainder as online payments directly into the Group Bank Account.
Many thanks to all those members who paid on time as following up missing payments can be very time consuming for both myself and Section Leaders.

Fundraising Report 2021/22
We have worked hard this year to continue our fundraising efforts, supported by a small team of parents. Funding is much needed to support continued activities as well as build the funds needed for our new building.
Current funds are £23,562.
Since the last AGM, we have had the following fundraising activities
-
Change 4 Change moneyboxes - We were lucky to be awarded a Community Grant of £450 from the local Nanpantan councillors. Some of this money was used to produce our Change 4 Change moneyboxes, which were given to each of our members. Our first collection during Autumn 2021 raised £343. Please keep collecting your change and let us know if you’d like a moneybox?
-
Charnwood Challenge, Sunday 26[th] September 2021 – It was great to be able to host Charnwood Challenge again. Around 150 runners and walkers took part in the sunshine last September. The event was a huge success again, thoroughly enjoyed by all and raising £1540.
-
Community afternoon – During December we hosted our first community afternoon, including a host of stalls by our Beavers, Cubs and Scout who used their creativity to turn a few £ into items to sell. The event was really well attended, welcoming friends, neighbours and also some previous Scouts who attended 1[st] Nanpantan 50 years ago! Raised a staggering £1955.
11
-
Car park marshalling – A team of hardy volunteers helped to marshal three running events at Prestwold Hall, for which we received donations of over £1000 - making all the rain worth it!
-
Premier mobility – We received an amazing donation of £3000 from this local company. They are based on Lansdowne Drive and supply all types of mobility aids.
-
Bag2School clothing donation – During March we did our annual collection of unwanted clothes and accessories to donate via the Bag2School scheme, that collects and re-cycles items to other charities. We collected near half a tonne which generated a payment of £162. Thank you to everyone who donated items.
-
Easyfundraising – We have continued to be part of this scheme as shopping during the lock-down increasingly moved online. This scheme has over 5700 retailers who make a donation for every purchase made, to a good cause as nominated by the buyer. There is no cost to the customer and you just shop online as usual – they do the rest! We now have 72 members using this scheme, generating an average donation of £20 / month. If you’re an online shopper find out more here: www.easyfundraising.org.uk
-
Charnwood community lottery – We continue to be part of the Charnwood Community Lottery and have had some winners! For each £1 ticket purchased, we receive 50p. Thank you to our regular supports, which generates an average of £30 / month for our funds.
What next?
Hathern Gardens – Saturday 25 June, 12-5pm: We’ll be hosting kids fun, stalls and refreshments on The Green, Hathern. Please join us and enjoy a cuppa and cake in the sunshine, whilst the little people enjoy the tree house, rope swing or mud pit
Charnwood Challenge – Sunday 18 September. A 10 mile walk or run. Applications will open towards the summer. Watch this space, more information to follow.
If you would like to be involved in fundraising in any way, or has any ideas for events or funding opportunities, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. Contact us and keep up to date with our activities via our Facebook site : https://www.facebook.com/NanpantanScouts

Building Sub-Committee Update
At the 2021 AGM, we presented plans for a revised approach to replacing our building. In November, we submitted the plans for our new building to Charnwood Boroough Council. In parallel, we submitted an application for outline planning for a house on the area of land encompassing our current fire pit area and the wooded area behind. Subject to approval of both planning applications and also successful sale of the land mentioned, this will allow us to cover most of the expected costs of providing a new scout building. We are continuing to fundraise and identify other sources of funding for the shortfall. We would like to be in a position to demolish the existing building Spring 2023 with a hope to have a new building in place for the Autumn term. The Group would be looking to continue meeting whilst the building work is taking place using outdoor and other alternative venues.
The Building Committee itself is a group of parents and members of the Executive Committee, if you have skills which would help us, then please get in touch with us at the AGM meeting or via BuildingCommittee@nanpantanscouts.org.uk.
Emma Miles - Building Sub Committee
Financial Report
Overview
Thank you to all members for their support over 2021/22. Following the Covid Pandemic subscriptions have almost got back to pre pandemic levels and we have had the benefit of some further government support in the form of grants (albeit a much lower level than the previous financial year).
There has been some excellent fund raising over the year and we thank everyone who helped and contributed to this. We also have donations and grants such that the building fund is growing as detailed in Emma’s report. We had two significant donations that we really appreciate from The Leslie Sell Trust of £750 and Premier Mobility of £3000. In addition, we had volunteers helping marshal parking for County School Athletics events which resulted in £1300, there are further opportunities in this area and we value the support of parents and the Scouting team in volunteering to help on these events. Please contact Carl is you are able to help.
We received nearly £4000 in gift aid for the financial year 2019/20 and 2020/21 claiming against a combination of subs, donations and fund raising. This was lower than previous years due to the impact on Subs from Covid. We really appreciate everyone who has completed gift aid forms as this really helps, if you haven’t completed one or are unsure and you pay tax please contact our Subscriptions secretary as it enables us to claim gift aid back and everything helps.
We have had some increased spend on the building development such as planning permission, structural calculations and architect work to support the development of the replacement building.
If people can use the Online Scout Manager system it would be really appreciated, we have a good up take on it and it really helps our team in the administration.
Thank you to everyone for their support and contribution, we really appreciate everything you do and any additional support such as introductions to organisations that may be able to help with grants, donations, time etc is always appreciated.

Reports

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Nanpantan Scouts
I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 28[th] February 2022.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the next statement.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
have not been met or
- to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached
