Reports

Chairperson

The last year has been difficult for young people, parents/guardians, scout groups and leaders, dealing with individual circumstances and a new way of operating during the pandemic. Many activities have by necessity, been postponed, cancelled or moved online in accordance with government and Scout Association guidelines in what has been an unprecedented year.

This year, more than any other, we need to thank the wonderful team of leaders, who despite the difficulties presented by COVID-19 have managed to continue to provide an amazing range of scouting opportunities both online and in person to engage and benefit our cubs, beavers and scouts.

We are fortunate to continue to have an excellent Executive Committee who bring their specialist skills to ensure 1[st] Nanpantan is a well-run group. One significant change this year is that Kerry Burgess has taken over as fundraiser and it is pleasing to note, that despite being in the midst of the pandemic, our fundraising income streams have been diversified with an impressive and steady income through a range of new activities through the year.

The Building Sub-Committee has continued to make good progress through the year. This is thanks in no small part to the significant input from parents and leaders including: Emma Miles, Martin Goodwin, Alison Lawton-Devine, Mitch Smith, Matt Frost, Carl Travis-Roberts (our GSL) plus Pete Chambers (Chair of District Scouts). We will report on this in detail at the AGM meeting.

I would particularly like to thank the group Quarter Master, Dave Foord, who has done a great job of looking after our stores and equipment over the last few years. Dave is currently handing over to our new Quarter Master, Tony Beirne, who we welcome to the role.

We look forward to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and to opening-up scouting opportunities and activities. The safety of everyone involved in Scouts, both young people and adults, will continue to be our number one priority and opening-up will be in line with Government and Scout Association guidance.

It is notable that whilst many groups have seen a decline in numbers during the pandemic, 1st Nanpantan now has increased interest to join following the lockdown and we continue to be one of the largest groups in Leicestershire.

Adam Crawford adamcrawford@nanpantanscouts.org.uk

Group Scout Leader

2020 has been a very different year...

We lost several members over the year but our numbers are now bouncing back as we see all our sections going back gradually to face 2 face. We currently have 111 members and are confident our numbers will be back up as they were prior to the pandemic.

6

Our previous design was to rebuild the back hall and renovate the front building but now we are looking at a full demolition and start from scratch, giving the group a building to last way into the future. We have a great Building committee supported by the Loughborough District Chair Pete Chambers, and would like to thank them all for their continued work for the group.

At Nanpantan we try and create a full and varied programme with indoor and outdoor activities at the hut and out and about, to give the young people great fun & adventure in their scouting journey. This would not be possible without the ongoing support of our leaders and helpers, so a big thank you! We also appreciate the positive feedback and engagement from all the families of our Beavers, Cubs & Scouts!

Last year our zoom sessions included lots of games, badge work, laughter, art & crafts & even cooking! We want to acknowledge the impressive way that the leaders and kids (and their families in the background!) rose to the challenge of zoom meetings. It was great to stay in touch with everyone during lockdown.

We are always looking for new members and are needing extra support in the following sections: Monday Cubs / Wednesday Scouts / Fridays Beavers if you know of anyone or would like to join us please do get in touch with me; Scouting is very rewarding and fun!

Thanks again to everyone: kids, leaders, exec members and families. We feel that Nanpantan is a very special group, and the spirit of our members and the energy and ideas of our volunteers is what keeps it going.

Carl Travis-Roberts - 1st Nanpantan Group Scout Leader carltravis-roberts@nanpantanscouts.org.uk

Beavers – Wednesday

Wednesday night Beavers haven’t experienced their usual program of activities, but we have had fun nonetheless! We have met for most of the year on zoom and enjoyed a mix of games, chat and badge work. We have done everything from morse code to an escape room, from a talent night to learning Swahili, from making Christmas decorations to learning about water safety. We met a paramedic and a policeman. In between lockdowns, we have made the most of the grounds, particularly the fire circle. Marshmallows are always a must and this year we tried dough sticks- we would highly recommend them!

We finished the year with a long-awaited bike ride, chip hike and visit to the jungle trail at the Oaks Campsite.

Thank you to all our Beavers and parents for your continued support and enthusiasm.

Sophie Diaper and Susan Smith - Assistant Section Leaders

Beavers – Friday

Well, what a year! We thought that the departure of David Murray was going to be the biggest challenge in 2020, how wrong we were! Covid-19 had a huge impact on us all. The impact on Beavers was that we were not able to restart until September. Zoom meetings became the norm in the Autumn term, with two faceto-face meetings in October and December respectively. Two of the more memorable online meetings (for different reasons) involved making 'armpit fudge' and knot-tying. We also said farewell (virtually!) to David, Jo and then Hope.

The spring was a term of zoom meetings including a joint meeting with the Wednesday Beavers and PC Burton, and Beavers presenting their own games on zoom which we played together online.

Finally, the Summer term allowed us to return to face-to-face meetings at the hut, albeit in two 'bubbles'. It has been great to be able to meet again, not least to do some of those things that can't be done online. We made our own obstacle courses, decorated the trees with clay faces, sung songs around the campfire and most recently hiked up to the Outwoods.

All in all, we've had a fun and rewarding time and managed to work towards or complete the Safety, Cook, Builder, International, Explore, Air Activities 1, World Challenge, Skills Challenge, Personal Challenge and Outdoors Challenge badges. We also awarded one Chief Scout's Bronze.

None of this would have been possible without the willingness and determination of the Beavers, and the help and understanding of parents and other family members. I would like to thank you all for embracing the challenges that were thrown at you, despite everything that may have been going on in your own lives.

A special thanks also goes out to the parents who've helped out at our face-to-face meetings, to our young leaders Bethan, Emily, Luke and Josh, and last but not least to David, Jo and Hope for their years of contributions.

Lastly, Nick (who has been volunteering in Scouting for a long time) joins us an ASL and brings with him years of experience. Despite this, we could use some support with the behind-the-scenes planning and organisation that keeps the cogs turning. We have a great time with the Beavers, and we all find it a rewarding experience to volunteer, so please consider how you could help.

Craig, Clare and Nick - Assistant Scout Leaders

Cubs – Monday (Nanpanthers Pack)

Where to begin? Well what a year, talk about being prepared – an understatement!

However as a pack we have carried on through with the Nanpanther mantra ‘Fun through learning’.

During the Summer of 2020 we sent the Cubs challenges that they could do at home to earn badges and to keep them going even though we were unable to meet up. Activities like NESW litter games in the garden and cooking meals for their families. The Cubs embraced the challenges and ran with them.

Even though we couldn’t meet face-to-face that didn’t stop the Nanpanthers. We met weekly by Zoom, it was strange at first but we all worked together as a pack to make it work. We did joint meetings with the Thursday Cubs at first, then went on to be just our pack. I must apologise for some of the messes created by the activities we did, for example duvet’s on the stairs and Cubs running round their houses and paper/pens everywhere. Your children showed brilliant resilience in carrying on regardless.

Sadly some Cubs didn’t join in the Zoom meetings, however this platform has allowed us to deliver a weekly meeting packed with badgework and games. The Cubs have completed several Challenge badges towards their Silver Award. We even presented a Silver Award through the screen…honest (a little trickery involved!).

We would like to thank you and your children for helping us carry on through the ‘new normal’, your support has been amazing. We look forward to being able to meet up again in a safer environment for our weekly meetings.

8

We did have a meeting run by our Young Leader Adam, he did a fantastic night that the Cubs enjoyed. We also had some of the older Cubs running online games that they had devised for one of the meetings, it was a relaxing week for the Leaders due to the impressive work done by the Cubs.

The Cubs made a lockdown friend (rubber egg) to isolate in a jar for a week that they had to look after.

On a really positive note we have noticed the Cubs gain confidence on being online and taking on all the challenges we have thrown at them.

Another apology…we still run late online, we sort of finish on time. So in all fairness it’s just like being at the Hut!

Also…if you feel you could be a helper to the Nanpanthers then please feel free to contact me. Thank you for listening.

Malcolm Newton and team. Nanpanther CSL.

Cubs - Thursday

WOW! What a year this has been! I (Jo) have taken over as leader and have enjoyed getting to know everyone involved. We have 19 cubs at present and will be looking to add a few more in the autumn term.

Zoom cubs restarted in autumn 2020 with scavenger hunts definitely the favourite with the cubs (if not the parents!). It was great to get back to a face to face camp fire with Smores and fire lightning just before Christmas. Zoom continued in 2021 and we also made some great origami models and a yummy (if large) microwave chocolate cake to finish things off before Easter.

Outdoor sessions have resumed and it has been great to see everyone again. The weather was against us a few times but everyone mucked in under the trusty gazebos. Highlights have included the much loved chippy hike, a Swedish night run by Wilma (a cub Mum) and den building, with a bike ride, camp fires and stretcher relays still to come this term.

We invested possibly the largest number of new cubs ever in May 2021 when 14 officially joined the pack (plus me!).

Three cubs will have hopefully achieved their Chief Scout Silver by the end of the summer term which is an especially impressive achievement through various periods of lockdown. We wish them all the best as they move onto Scouts.

Jo, Carl, Richard, Nick & Hari

Scouts – Tuesday (Priory Troop)

Priory Troop currently has 19 members. It has been a busy year on Zoom, the scouts and leaders have learnt many new skills including muting all participants. The Scouts have been busy working towards their Chief Scout Gold Award, which Joshua Murray and Euan Christie achieved. Well done both.

There have been a no camps throughout the year, but we did join in with the district camp at home and Mucky march events that county put on along with from Scogui night hike which went virtual, which we came in 2nd place.

We did manage to get in a few face to face activates, when restrictions aloud from a murder mystery walk through Loughborough, soap carving, geocaching to fire lighting at the hut. The festoon lighting sure came in handy during the dark nights in December!

9

I would like to thank Rachel, Ed and Adam for all their hard work and support through the year.

Preeti Kitching

Scouts – Wednesday (Longcliffe Troop)

Over the past year, Wednesday Scouts have stayed strong at around 21 Scouts.

Sadly, the past year has been spent on zoom, but that hasn’t stopped the Scouts. The Scouts took part in the record-breaking camp at home and the Leicestershire scrap book challenge, during the first lock down and one Scout won his age category. Over the first few weeks the badges kept on being completed at home with one Scout doing 16 and another completing 10. By Christmas I had 110 badges to deliver across all the Scouts. We have had great fun running activities like ‘Taskmaster’ and ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ to science projects and soap carving.

We had a great evening with Tuesday scouts learning about space and the ISS with a talk from the National Space Centre.

Thanks to the other Leader for their support on running activities from different parts of the UK.

Hopefully we will get back to face to face soon.

Yours in Scouting

Joe Putt – Scout Leader

Members Subs amount
Summer 2020 137 £10 voluntarycontribution
Autumn 2020 110 £20
Spring2021 103 £20

With the move to online sessions as a result of COVID-19 the Subs amount was reduced from its normal level of £36.00 per term. There was voluntary £10 contribution for Summer 2020, and Subs were set at £20.00 for the Autumn and Spring Terms.

Total Subs income for the last 12 months was just under £4900. Over the year the majority of Subs payments have been made via OSM with the remainder as online payments directly into the Group Bank Account.

Many thanks to all those members who paid on time as following up missing payments can be very time consuming for both myself and Section Leaders.

Fundraising Report 2020/21

We have worked hard this year to continue our fundraising efforts, supported by a small team of parents. The funding has been much needed to support continued activities during the lock-down periods, as well as continuing to build the funds needed for the new building.

Current funds are £24,433.

Since the last AGM, we have had the following fundraising activities

Scout Building Report

The building Sub-Committee has continued to work on plans for a new building despite the ongoing challenges of Covid. Following a detailed investigation and review of other Scout Groups similar projects, an alternative approach to the project has been proposed which has been agreed with the Group Executive Committee. This being to demolish all the existing building and replace with a steel framed, metal clad building broadly on the site of the existing building. This would contain a large hall (12m x 12m - the same size as now), kitchen, toilets, stores and provisions. This approach has more certainty from a cost perspective but also provides a long-standing solution than the original plan which left the front building (kitchen and meeting room) in place but refurbished.

However, we do need to reapply for planning permission and this is the current focus with architects working on the design now. We have a supplier in mind for the building itself and have visited a similar Scout Hut building locally and believe this design will provide the Group the building we need for the future.

Funding remains an issue but we are hopeful of securing a grant from Leicestershire Scouts and to be able to access other funding when we have revised planning. We are also looking at other options to fund the building in shorter timescales which may involve selling a portion of land. Whilst not a first choice, this would be minimised to ensure we have adequate outside space for activities.

Emma Miles - Building Sub Committee

Financial Report

Overview

As a result of Covid we have significantly lower subscriptions in the 2020/21 year. However we have been lucky enough to receive Covid related grants from government backed schemes to address some of the shortfall.

Again despite the problems caused by Covid there has been some excellent fund raising over the year and we thank everyone who helped and contributed to this. We also have donations and grants such that the building fund is growing as detailed in Emma’s report.

We are due to receive nearly £5000 in gift aid for the financial year 2019/20 and 2020/21 claiming against a combination of subs, donations and fund raising. We really appreciate everyone who has completed gift aid forms as this really helps, if you haven’t completed one or are unsure and you pay tax please contact Caroline as it enables us to claim gift aid back and everything helps.

All groups are at capacity with waiting lists. If people can use the Online Scout Manager system it would be really appreciated, we have a good up take on it and it really helps our team in the administration.

Thank you to everyone for their support and contribution, we really appreciate everything you do and any additional support such as introductions to organisations that may be able to help with grants, donations, time etc is always appreciated.

Reports

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Nanpantan Scouts

I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 28[th] February 2018.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the next statement.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
