GROUP CHAIR REPORT

This is a special year – Our group first opened In 1934 at the Toc H youth club on North Street in Barrow. The group was listed in the County Guide that year and then registered nationally in 1935. It started with cubs only and then a few years later the first scout troop was set up. We will be celebrating the groups 90[th] anniversary at our AGM.

So, I am delighted on this special occasion to introduce this year’s Annual Report. We have had a full year of activities in each of our sections and I would like to thank all of the leaders and their assistants for their hard work in planning and delivering programmes that enable our young people to experience new challenges and have fun. Scouting is thriving in Barrow and all of our sections are full and oversubscribed with youngsters waiting to join us, we are grateful for our volunteers who give up their time to run the sections for us. so please take a look at each of the section reports to find out what has been going on during the year!

I would like to thank all of our non-uniformed volunteers and Trustees, who work hard all year behind the scenes to keep the Group in good order and provide help with fundraising ideas and activities.

The group have been very proactive in obtaining grants and donated materials and labor. In the last financial year the windows were replaced with the help of a £2,200 grant from the Parish Council, new outside benches were donated by British Gypsum at a cost of £540 and local electrician Emma Dutton installed the new electricity supply to the shed. Just recently we received £5,000 from the Scout Association for a new door in the extension and a new accessible ramp area for the main door and a further £550 for purchasing play equipment. This month we received £1,000 from British Gypsum towards the cost of renovating the floor that you are standing on now.

All of this has contributed to a huge improvement in the building facilities, resulting in vastly increased building hire, including supporting 7 other community groups. The extra income allows us to continue improving facilities for our young people and keep subscription costs as low as possible.

Our Thursday Club Volunteers have been very busy carrying out maintenance work or supporting projects with tradesmen brought in for specialised work. Please have a read through the report which showcases their amazing achievements over the year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Trina Cooper who retired as Group Scout Leader. Trina played a huge part in getting Scouting in the village to where it is now and leaves a long lasting legacy. I’m pleased to say that we still see Trina who is now a member of the Thursday club.

Finally – a warm welcome to Claire Bigg, our new Group Lead Volunteer. Claire has taken over from Trina and is pivotal to the continued growth and success of scouting in our village.

GROUP LEAD VOLUNTEER REPORT

Our Squirrel Drey, has come on leaps and bounds, so much has been achieved. It’s led by Vicky, Nava and we will be welcoming Kelly and Tim to the leadership team.

Allison Beaver Colony has had some changes as Lisa, Kelly and Heather have stepped down. Liz and Harvey have transferred from Squirrels to run beavers and we welcome Dave to the leadership team.

Allison Cub Pack is led by Iska, Claire, Helen R and Jas a young leader, Mark is also on hand if anything needs doing. Lee has now moved to Allison Scouts.

Fronting Allison Scout Troop we have Adelle, Alex and Laura with the more recent addition of Lee.

Wilford Beavers continues to be run by Ann, aided by Liz, Lucy, Kerry and now Amy has joined the Team.

Wilford Cubs has been running smoothly under Helen N and Jayne we welcome Sally and Mark to the leadership team. Cubs have been running on Thursday’s for some time now with no issues.

Wilford Scouts continues to be ran by Richard, Sarah W and Janet

Most sections are running full to capacity, there are currently 14 Young People on our waiting list who are eligible to be at Squirrels or Beavers but we’re unable to accommodate them without increasing our adult volunteers.

Finally, a massive thank you to all of our leaders, Julie (group admin), committee members, parent helpers, the Thursday Club etc, who freely give their time and support for the benefit of the Young People of Barrow

THURSDAY CLUB REPORT

We are very fortunate to have wonderful volunteers who happily give up their time helping with the upkeep of the grounds and buildings.

Our gardens are lovingly maintained by Cheryl and Sue assisted by the grass mowing team. We have had support from local gardening stores who have been happy to donate plants and gardening materials. Sue and Cheryl have also created a museum in the back-meeting room – with photos and other scouting memorabilia going back decades - A must to see.

Building maintenance is in the safe hands of Rob and Adam – this year, they have project managed the refurbishment of the hall floor, concreting the path next to the kitchen and providing a ramp to allow access to all into the building. They have assisted with the electrical work providing power and lights to the new shed along with the installation of the CCTV with help from Aaron.

A new door has been installed within the Museum meeting room, providing access to the garden.

Our painting team – Clair, Les and Eilane have been refreshing all of the walls, doors and cupboards and with help from Trina have been refreshing the Beaver corner mural.

We don’t have a cleaning contractor, so general cleaning is undertaken by our volunteers and tea towels washed weekly by Barbera.

There is always something to do on a Thursday along with a traditional tea and cake break at 11:00. Please come along, it’s a very inclusive group and you will be made very welcome.

SQUIRREL DREY

Squirrels have had a very successful 2[nd] year

We have been on lots of outings including attending the district Squirrels day out to Wheelgate Park which was a fantastic day.

We have been to the oaks on Charnwood campsite and enjoyed the jungle trail as well as some walk around the village

We have given out lots of badges this year, a total of 166 which includes 3 chief scout acorn awards which is the highest award a squirrel can achieve. Squirrel have worked hard to earn these badges by doing science experiments, cooking, obstacle courses, lots of teamwork and helping each other, building towers and growing plants from seeds.

We also had a visit from Santa!

In August we had our very first Squirrel sleepover in the hut!

Squirrel arrived on the Friday afternoon where we had lots of fun activities and water play, had some dinner and board games then we had a story before settling down in our tents for bed.

Saturday morning we had more activities and games before being picked up at lunchtime.

This was a huge success and we will be looking forward to organising more sleepovers in the future

ALLISON BEAVERS

Since last year’s meeting we have had a jam packed programme of fun, learning and earning badges. September was a month full of crafts for our Creative Badge. Our Beavers made collages, fingerprint trees, leaf prints and nature pictures using items found on an autumnal walk through the village.

In October Allison Beavers learnt to tie the figure of eight knot using strawberry laces and skipping ropes. We had a visit from a special lady Jeanie and her Hedgehog friend teaching us about how we can care for hedgehogs in the wild. Our beavers were so brave stroking the Hedgehog and built up an excellent donation of food too. We finished off the month with our Halloween party with spooky costumes, a mini disco and a dance off.

In November we focused a lot on Remembrance Day, what it means, why we parade and what the funds raised selling poppies goes towards. We made handprint poppy wreaths with beautiful words of thanks to the soldiers who fought for our country.

We also had our first group trip to Sundown Adventure Park. Our Beavers had so much fun and demonstrated excellent behaviour. To end November, we finished with a roaring campfire at the hut where Allison Beavers helped to cook their hotdogs and lots of campfire songs were learnt and sung.

December came around and it was all about Christmas! We created beautiful button decorations (with thanks to Wilford Beavers for organising) for the Christmas Tree Festival and made Christmas Gonk decorations to take home to decorate our own Christmas tree. We joined Wilford Beavers for a Christmas party full of games, dancing and a visit from Santa and attended the Christmas Tree Festival singing carols to family and friends who joined us. We finished off the month with an end of term treat and trip to jump giants for some bouncing fun - we think Lisa enjoyed this more than the Beavers!

January was all about Hobbies and throughout the month we worked on our Hobbies, Musician and Creative badges. We did junk modelling, musical instrument making and playing and had a session with Alixandra Dance where our Beavers learnt an awesome routine which they performed for parents.

In February Allison Beavers learnt about Chinese New Year and we worked out using the zodiac signs that there are lots of cheeky monkeys in our group! Some of our Beavers attended the football event and although our numbers may have been small, with the help of members from the Mountsorrel and Rothley colonies, we were mighty. We celebrated Valentine’s Day with biscuit decorating and handmade crafts for the parents and flipped out with pancakes for Shrove Tuesday! We finished the month working on our Gardeners badge making seed bombs and bird feeders.

March came around and Allison Beavers learnt about the Green Cross code with a torch led walk through the village. We started working on our Navigator badge using maps to find points of interest and playing games to learn the points of a compass. We had a fun filled day at Beaveree organised by the district (thank you for an amazing day!) with outdoor

activities, ice creams, crafts and so much more. Kelly was hit by the Strictly curse at the disco with 2 cream pies to the face! We finished before Easter with Easter themed crafts and an egg hunt in the newly refurbished scout hut garden.

In April we focused on team spirit and working together. We held a log chew, had team games and continued to have lodge leaders who became responsible for the washing up each session! We spent lots of time out of the hut with a visit to the Holy Trinity church for Bell Ringing and the Baptist Church to learn about our local food bank and how we can support our community. We ended the month with a trip to the local care home where Allison Beavers spent time reading, talking and sharing toys with the residents. We finished off the session with a performance of our well-loved songs Campfires Burning and our Beaver One, Beaver All song which has some great actions!

In May we spent lots of time outdoors focusing on our Activities badge. We visited Charnwood Oaks with support from Iska and Claire, where our Beavers loved trying out all the activities and were so brave trying new things, finishing with a campfire and toasted marshmallows. We had a fantastic session on the water Bell Boating and our beavers loved the games played in the boat.

June was filled with more outdoor activities and lots of discussions about health and fitness. We learnt about nutrition, healthy eating and exercise and made a great video about our favourite sports and healthy foods. We spent a session cycling at the park where Allison Beavers learnt to Be Safe, Be Seen and Be Ready and had lots of fun with slaloms, hills and races! We worked on our Sports badge with team games and had a visit from Sandy who helped to invest our newest members and award our first Chief Bronze Award.

In July we said Goodbye to Kelly, Lisa and Heather as we prepared for Liz, Harvey and Dave to take the baton and lead Allison Beavers after the Summer. We finished the month with a Water Safety session and visit from the RNLI, more investitures, 8 chief bronze awards and a tonne of well-earned badges. The term was finished off with a fun trip to Laser Quest and McDonald’s where our lodges competed against each other before ordering and enjoying a McDonald’s treat for tea!

We have had an amazing time spent with the incredible Allison Beavers. We are so proud of our group of Young People who constantly demonstrate excellent behaviour and they are a real credit to their family. We have loved to watch them grow in confidence, develop new skills and make new friends along their journey with Allison Beavers. We have supported and had so much support from the community in running an exciting and action-packed programme and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for Allison Beavers with the lovely new leaders onboard. WILFORD BEAVERS

Wilford beavers have had a great year with all our beavers working hard to earn their badges and have had lots of fun throughout the past year.

We started last September with our Outdoor challenge badge. To achieve this we learned about five animals and had a visit from the hedgehog lady who brought along some hedgehogs she had rescued. It is to their credit that the animal work was completed at home. We built a camp fire and cooked sausages, on a barbecue. We learned to tie three knots and all had a go at putting up a tent at home. Beavers made some impressive bird feeders to put in their garden at home. We made a leaf collage and went on a photographic walk and created photo albums.

Beavers also attained their emergency Aid Stage 1 badge and Nights Away Stage 1.

We also attended the District Outing to Sundown adventure park, Remembrance parade and the Christmas Carol concert and decorated a tree for this. We hope to increase our turnout for this years parade and Carol Concert.

For the Spring Term we worked on our Skills challenge as well as participating in the County Beaveree. Charnwood district Football Tournament and indoor kayaking at New Parks Pool as an extra activity.

In our programme we learned how to look after ourselves and stay healthy and completed some super posters. We had fun on our agility exercise/games night

We learned to light a candle safely and reflected on what scouting was about and roasted marshmallows over it and turned them into smores. We did some pretty impressive glass painting for mothers day and invented and built machines of all shapes and sizes. Beavers were very excited about the visit from the Mayor of Charnwood. We learned about solving problems in a fun practical way. We finished our term by earning our musicians badge stage I where all beavers leaned new songs and we also had a very enjoyable Talent show. We raised £25.00 for Rainbows and £25.00 for Scout Hut renovations. This was a big well done to all beavers taking part.

This last term we have embarked on out Adventure Challenge. We have done absolutely loads so I am just going to list the adventurous fun things we have done.

We have lit fires sang, camp fire songs, made smores, been grass sledging, on the zip wire, den building at Beacon Hill, bouldering and crossbow shooting at the Oaks in Charnwood, followed trails and learned our green cross code (beavers are very good at this). We have attained our gardening badges by planting flower and vegetable seeds and looking after them. We also got our Navigation skills 1 and went on a fairly long hike around the fields to practice these skills. Some beavers who chose to attend went bell boating in May. All have completed the explorers badge. We have also completed the cyclist badge. We have had so much fun this term but still remembered others less fortunate and beavers kindly brought in £2.00 which they spent at the Coop buying food for the food bank.

We are very proud to say since September last year we have awarded nine Bronze awards

Some of this work has been completed at home to get these awards so please take note parents and beavers.

We have a good leadership team with Myself(Raven), Lucy(Bear), Kerry(Robin and Amy who is in the process of signing up as a leader. We also have the valuable addition of Alex Broadhead our new young leader. Thank you to all parents who continue to take part in the parent rota without the parent Rota some activities could not happen

ALLISON CUBS

In the last 12 months, we have awarded a total of 375 badges. This includes 9 Chief Scout Silver Awards.

It has been an extremely busy year, with quite a few tiring days out and weekends away.

We attended Charnwood’s Birthday Cub trip to Chessington World of Adventure… The very long motorway closure did not stop the Cubs from having a great day out. Playing the one-minute game on the coach helped to pass the time.

The annual Remembrance Parade and Carol concert were well attended by Cubs.

Leading up to Christmas we had party with indoor snowball fight and went to sing Christmas carols at a residential care home in Mountsorrel.

In February we took 13 Cubs to Swadlincote snow sports centre for Tobogganing, Snow tubing and Skiing. All of them said they would like to go there again. The activities were great and the staff were really helpful however the organisation of the centre was a shambles.

We took a few cubs to the Charnwood district football tournament alongside Wilford Cubs – Not Barrow’s strong point but at least we showed up!

The Black Country Living Museum trip in March was a long and busy day with 9 Allison Cubs.

We had a fabulous visit to Loughborough Fire Station, but we needed so much longer not everything they wanted to show us. We were given a detailed behind the scenes tour of the station and got to see a variety of fire service vehicles.

This term alone we have managed to go to both District and County camps. County camp was pirate themed and our first Cubs only camp jointly with Wilford Cubs. It was an exhausting camp due to the extreme heat but the cubs and leaders were all fantastic and had a great time. Activities included an inflatable assault course, building a pirate ship, and pirate themed cinema evenings.

WILFORD CUBS

Looking back over the past year we have had some amazing times. The cubs ventured on a trip to chessington zoo where they were stuck on the road for hours and showed some great resilience in their patience….resulting in a shorted adventure at the park but a fun one.

We visited the Black Country museum where we rode on a bus, visited the old times and joined in some fun games.

We had a session from Jon who taught us some new rugby skills. Danny in karate had all the cubs engaging well choosing his assistant to demonstrate some take downs. Also some of the cubs took part in the district football match.

We squeezed in two visit to the theatre this year for the fabulous productions of Grease and Matilda.

During the year we have welcomed new cubs and I think each year they get braver with 5 of our cubs being invested at camps in front of hundreds of other cubs. Well done.

On that note we have participated in two camps, one district and one county. These are great to be involved in and are weekends packed with great activities from glass engraving, drumming, fire lighting, making paracord items, learning new skills from DIY to climbing, go-carting, mountain biking, archery, laser tag, to name but a few…..

With the new ones coming we also have several cubs leaving that have achieved their silver awards which is the highest they can in cubs and they have gone off to Scouts to continue with the fun scouting can be.

We took part in Remembrance Sunday, and had a visit from Rev Clive and also helped out at the Barrow Christmas market helping on the tombola.

Throughout the year we have completed many badges, a favourite was the DIY badge when we made tin robots. We looked at disability awareness which was instigated when one of our cubs came to a slight mishap whilst skiing and injured his leg. The cubs showed great kindness and consideration when their fellow cub couldn’t participate in all the activities and helped him along for several weeks.

We have lit fires, made s'more's, eaten chips on walks, made armpit fudge, cooked at home for our parents and generally learnt some new life skills and hopefully had fun along the way.

We have a great team at Wilford cubs, a special thank you from Helen to Jayne, Mark and Sally who has joined us recently for being part of this year and we look forward to lots more fun starting soon.

ALLISON SCOUTS & WILFORD SCOUTS

2023/2024 has been another great year for both Scout groups. We have had new leaders join and continue to enjoy a close relationship running many of our activities as joint sessions.

As previous years, we have continued the focus on camps, making sure that Scouts benefit from all the unrivalled opportunities that they provide. We had a busy Splash camp at LOPC in the Autumn term, an overnight camp at The Oaks in January, a weekend district camp at Sherbrooke in May, & our 1st overnight camp at the Scout Hut.

Larkin International Camp

To end the term, we set up camp for a week at Larkin International Camp in North Yorkshire, where we were also joined by Quest Explorers Quorn.

The camp was a great success, with the scouts joining is lots of new activities to challenge them both physically & personally The Scouts also enjoyed a day trip to Scarborough & the beach

Away from camps we continue to pack our termly programmes with as much as we can. This past year we had a large number of new Scouts move to us from Cubs. Having new Scouts ensured that we covered off lots of essential Scouting skills in our badgework, such as backwoods cooking, pioneering & navigation skills, with a group of Scouts from both Allison & Wilford taking part in the County Incident Hike.

We’ve also enjoyed plenty of activities away from HQ, with visits to LOPC to do climbing, cooking & den building at The Oaks, cycling to Loughborough Mcdonalds, local river hikes & games nights at the Millenium Park. We also had the obligatory chip shop walk!

Getting involved in & being visible in the local community is also a large part of scouting, we have attended events such as the Christmas Tree festival, the very wet Party in the Park, Poppy selling on the High Street, the Remembrance Parade, and the Christmas street markets. Scouts from both sections also manned 2 watersations at Prestwold 10K road race.

We are all looking forward to continuing to offer a varied programme over the next year for both Alison & Wilford Scouts.

TREASURERS REPORT

I’m pleased to report that Barrow upon Soar Scout Group maintains a healthy financial position and should continue to do so. Thank you to all the group’s volunteer’s for getting their expenses claims submitted in a timely manner as this enables the financial report to be both accurate and produced in good time.

Highlights

Bank Accounts

Migration to a new account with Virgin Money has been completed and the NatWest account closed.

The savings fund that was managed by Gillwell was returned to and used in part to fund projects on the including Shed & Garden areas. The remaining funds have been placed into a notice account with United Trust which follows the Bank of England base rate.

Gift Aid

The group is now registered with HMRC for gift aid and is permitted to claim up to 4 previous years back payment. Members and users have the group have been asked to complete gift aid forms which are to be submitted with the accounts at end of year. This is estimated to bring in an additional £1,500 into the group.

Spending

Some of the costs incurred by the Shed & Garden project were absorbed by grants. The budget allocated for this has been reallocated to cover additional projects such as the floor refurbishment & new doors.

Utilities

The gas contract with E.ON Next was renewed. A new contract with Yu Energy for Electricity was agreed and a new smart meter fitted. The group is now being billed precisely for electricity usage rather than making over-payments.

Accounts

The accounts for 2023 - 2024 have been audited by Stuart ready for submission to the charities commission. 13

The financial year ended with a deficit of £21,898.83, below the estimate of £25,000 - £30,000. Thank you to al those who helped secure grants & performed fund raising. The remaining budget is being allocated to other additional projects. A deficit of £5,000 is estimated for the following year.

The auditor has requested that the Scout HQ land & building be valued for the financial year prior to submission to the charities commission.

Budget

The original 2023 - 2024 financial year budget will continue into the following year. The manner in which income & expenses are tracked has now been altered to make tracking easier & provide greater insight into loss making areas.

Other Matters

Leaders are encouraged to submit all receipts for expenses as it is suspected that some may be absorbing costs themselves and this is not necessary.

A new expense’s claim system has been created at: http://expenses.barrowscouts.org/ however nobody to date has opted to make use of this.

Ian Mitchell notes to the Group Scout Council members present that this part of the meeting is a necessary part to make sure that the charity’s foundations are in good order.

4a. To adopt the model constitution from Policy, Organisation and Rules

Chair: Ian Mitchell

In line with the recommendation from Scout Headquarters. I propose that we adopt the model constitution from Chapter 5 of Policy, Organisation and Rules. A copy of this was available for review and inspection prior to this meeting, and copies are also available at the meeting.

4b. Note the Group’s financial year

Ian Mitchell addressed this with AaronParker, to show accounts that have been signed and audited by Stuart Mcdonald.

This year we have put a budget together- This is based on a worse case guide as if only subs were to come in & no other income.

4c. Agree the number of members that may be elected to the Trustee Board

The Group Scout Council must agree at its AGM the number of people that can be elected to the Trustee Board. The recommendation from the outgoing Trustee Board is that 4 people can be elected. I propose that the Group Scout Council approves that recommendation.

The Group Scout Council must agree at its AGM the quorum – the minimum number of Group Scout Council members that must be present at a meeting of the Group Scout Council. The recommendation from the Trustee Board is that the quorum should be set at 15 persons. The Group Scout Council is asked to approve that recommendation.

The Group Scout Council must agree at its AGM the quorum for Trustee Board meetings, and any subcommittee meetings. The Charity Commission statement of good practice is that the Trustee Board quorum should be set at one third of Trustee Board members plus one and that the that the sub-committee quorum should be set at one third of Trustee Board members plus one. The recommendation from the outgoing Trustee Board is that the quorum should be set the Charity Commission good practice statement. The Group Scout Council is asked to approve that recommendation.
