1[st] Abram Scout Group Scout Council

Annual General Meeting

Annual report June 2025

Group Lead Volunteers report

Firstly I would like to welcome you all to our AGM and presentation night.

The leaders work very hard to put a program together that will enable them to get their top awards as long as the children come to most meetings and camps etc.

All the children work very hard to earn their badges though we try to make it as much fun as possible to learn new skills.

We had some major changes to our leader team last year which we thought might have been awkward for the children and parents to get used to but it seemed to have a very positive impact with numbers in the sections increasing again.

We said goodbye to Andy(Akela) and Sarah(Keeo), Kirsty(Hathi) and Laura(Kaa) moved to Explorers and welcomed Lisa(Akela), Daniel(Mowgli), Claire(Kim) into Cubs and Deb(Chil) and Neil(Bagheera) into scouts.

We have also said goodbye, temporarily I hope, to Ben, while he does his degree apprenticeship in Blackpool and at Sea. Ben has been with us since Beavers and became our first Leader to come from within the group. Come back any time Ben.

The sections have had a busy year both on doing badge work in the hut, attending camps and outings and entering district competitions. A massive thank you goes to all the leaders for helping to give the children such fantastic experiences.

The number of children in the group has continued to grow and we still have a waiting list for Beavers and Squirrels.

We have been going through some big changes regarding the structure of scouting and the software we use to manage the administration of groups which everyone countrywide is struggling with at the moment. It certainly isn’t doing what we were told it would do but we will get through it.

If anyone else is interested in helping please let us know. We can never have too much help. There are lots of things you can get involved in, not just with the children. We are looking for a few adults to join us on the trustee board. If you are remotely interested please come and have a chat with us this evening

Finally we hope you have a great evening and continue to give us your support at these events which help to subsidise trips and camps for all sections as well as for the upkeep of the hut.

Squirrels Team Lead report

We are pleased to have had a Squirrel Drey at 1st Abram Scout Hut since September 2022.

For those who don’t know about us, we are the youngest section in the scouting family and welcome children aged for 4-6 years old the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, make friends and have fun.

This past year has been no exception to that, and we have leaned lots of important skills to carry up to Beavers and beyond. We have enjoyed axe throwing and archery, backwoods cooking & nature walks.

We awarded 2 Chief Scout Acorn awards, 15 Challenge awards and 43 activity badges

During last summer, we had the best time having a great big water fight night in the garden, and we ended the summer term with a trip to Scotmans Flash and took part in a rafted canoeing session out on the water, great fun was had by all!

More recently we have helped our local community by doing a little pick of the local area. We also proudly took part in both the remembrance parade in Abram and the St George’s Day parade in Wigan Town centre.

All of the leaders were very pleased by such impeccable behaviour by all attending.

This past year has also seen us gain new leaders in our section, and we are very pleased to welcome Bumblebee and Chestnut to the Squirrel family.

Beavers Team Lead report

We have had a fantastic year packed with fun filled activities and trips in Beavers.

We have worked very hard working towards our badges including Creative, jsf Pll ioe = alc Explorer, Experiment, Healthy Eating, International and Emergency Aid and @ 2h 's gow Hikes Activity badges and all the Challenge awards. We have also worked on a brand-new badge – Builder badge where we built the tallest Lego tower to hold an egg, the designs for which included knights to guard the egg and egg trampolines in case it rolled off the tower.

The Beavers work really hard to gain badges especially challenge badges and those who complete all 6 Challenge badges (quite a feat!) and 4 Activity badges and complete a night away are awarded the Chief Scout Bronze Award. During the last 12 months we have awarded 249 badges consisting of 153 Activity badges, 89 Challenge Awards and 7 Chief Scout Awards! Well Done, Beavers!! In Addition to this tonight, we have several Beavers who will be awarded their Chief Scout Bronze Award, so we hope you give them an extra big cheer!

We have been on some exciting trips too this year; we had fun at the District Funday in June, joining Beavers from other groups in Wigan for fun, games and smores, we had a camptastic time at Group Camp in July, where we made rockets, took part in a go kart grand prix and climbed to the top of the climbing tower, and had a

great time watching Moana 2 for our Christmas Cinema Trip.

We had a magical time at Harry Potter Camp in April, learning potions, turning cards to frogs, carving owls from Soap and flying around camp in our homemade nimbus 2001’s. We

hunted for butterflies, tadpoles, and all sorts of bugs at our walks around the Three Sisters, and Low Hall, and King Louis walked our legs off on our hike to Pennington Flash.

We learnt all about Guide Dogs and even had a visit from a Guide Dog in training and did our bit for the local community in September with a litter pick. We are looking forward to more badges, fun and adventures in the next few months including a visit to Liverpool World Museum, Manley Mere and hopefully a water day at Scotsman’s flash.

Finally, we would like to say well done to our Beavers for all their hard work this year and a big thank you to the parents for your support.

We hope you enjoy the evening.

Cubs Team Lead report

Dear Cubs, Parents, Leaders, and Supporters,

As we reflect on the 2024-2025 scouting year, we are proud to share the progress and achievements of the 1st Abram Cubs. This year has been one of growth, learning, and exciting changes for our pack. First and foremost, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our Cubs, parents, and volunteers for your patience and understanding during the team and programme changes implemented this year. Transition periods can be challenging, and your support has been invaluable in helping us navigate these adjustments smoothly.

Programme Highlights

Group Camp

1st Abram’s Group Camp was a tremendous success, providing Cubs with the opportunity to develop outdoor skills, teamwork, target sports, and a fabulous opportunity to meet those from other sections, over a fun-packed weekend.

Wildcraft Day:

Cubs enthusiastically took part in Wildcraft Day, learning about foraging, shelter-building, and basic survival skills in the great outdoors. Huge thanks to 2nd Atherton Scout Group for use of their facilities.

Sleepovers:

We hosted several sleepovers that allowed Cubs to build friendships and confidence in a safe and enjoyable environment. From small CSA sleepovers to the larger scale Christmas one, all Cubs have shown enthusiasm and made these events great fun for all.

Grow Your Own Fiver

This year, many Cubs took part in our Grow Your Own Fiver challenge. The results of their hard work were amazing and the funds raised enabled us to support pack activities, subsidise our Winter Camp, with more to come from that in 2025.

** St George’s Parade**

This was our new team’s first public event with 1st Abram, and our Cubs did us proud!

Water Activities Day(s)

Cubs enjoyed a day of water activities at Scotsman’s Flash.

Rivington Pike Hike and BST

Some Cubs and their families took part in a hike around Rivington Pike, this was good preparation for BST, where 8 Cubs competed against other teams to complete the course, and jointly winning the Team Spirit Trophy along with 1st Ashton.

Youth Climate Summit: Cubs had the opportunity to create props for the Youth Climate Summit, these were very well received and seen by hundreds of school children during the day.

Remembrance Parade:

Cubs showed respect and community spirit by participating in the Remembrance Parade, honouring those who have served our country.

Litter Picks:

Environmental stewardship was a key focus, with Cubs taking part in litter picks to help keep our local area clean and green.

Cubs Mudder

Some of our Cubs took part in this mud and obstacle filled race.

H2O Two teams of Cubs took part in this annual event, having a great time and doing themselves proud.

Through attending such events as well as regular attendance and effort at meetings, Cubs earned a fantastic 230 badges, including a fantastic 8 Chief Scout Awards!

Team Development

New leaders joined our team, bringing fresh ideas and renewed energy to the pack. As ever, the team have been supported by our GLV and other leaders, enabling all to feel confident in their roles. We continue to encourage parent involvement, which greatly enriches the Cubs’ experience.

Looking Ahead

The coming year promises to be just as exciting, with plans to expand our outdoor adventures, further develop skills and interests, and strengthen our community ties.

None of this would be possible without our fantastic volunteers, Young Leaders, and the support of both group and supporters, for which I am very grateful.

Thank you once again for your continued support and enthusiasm. Together, we look forward to another fantastic year with the 1st Abram Cubs.

Yours in Scouting,

Lisa Woodger
