Scout & Guide Group Annual Report 2024-2025

#GoodForYou

Chair and Group Lead Volunteer Report

The last 12 months has seen the Group continue to grow from strength to strength with increasing membership in all Sections. Total membership is now an amazing 180, with all sections prospering and providing countless opportunities for our young people to develop and learn new skills. Reading the reports which follow, you will see that all sections have been very active throughout the year in one form or another.

Our newest section, Squirrels (Scouting section for 4 and 5-year-olds) continues to thrive and the Squirrels are enjoying their start along their Scouting journey, as you can see from the attached report. Well done to all our worthy Squirrel Volunteers for making this all happen.

The success of the Group would not be possible without the help of all our Volunteers. Our sincere thanks go to all these wonderful people who continue to give their time without any recompense whatsoever!

Specific mention must go to those members of 1[st] Bispham team, who in February this year, were presented with prestigious awards for their services to Scouting

Sincere congratulations to all the above who have given their time and dedication to the success of Scouting in Blackpool, West Lancs County and particularly to 1st Bispham.

Special thanks also to all parent helpers who have assisted at meetings and events. This help is greatly appreciated. Long may it continue as it makes a big difference and provides that extra valued support to the Volunteers.

We are always on the lookout for new Volunteers for both our Scouting and Guiding sections. If you, as parents, would wish to help in any way - even for a few hours a year - please don ’ t hesitate to approach the appropriate section Volunteers. Every little helps a great deal!

Our “ Tuesday” club has continued to ensure that the 1[st] Bispham Headquarters remains in excellent condition - see the Tuesday Club section of the report for the list of tasks completed. Again, on behalf of us all we would like to thank them for all the time they give

and the tremendous work they do. If there are any retired Grandparents who are looking for something to do for a few hours a week - do please put them in touch.

To offset the increased running costs of the HQ, we have again been extremely successful in hiring out the facility to outside organisations during the day. We are delighted to report, and you will see from the accounts, that we have had another successful year. This income is extremely helpful to support the running costs of the HQ. Sincere thanks to Eileen Sanday (our Bookings Secretary) for all her tremendously hard work in managing bookings – thank you Eileen and well done indeed.

From a business perspective we are carefully managing our finances to ensure that we can maintain the excellent facilities we have today in the condition we are enjoying today – whilst protecting our reserves, just in case.

This year sees 1[st] Bispham celebrate its Centenary year and we are planning an “ open event” on the 26[th] July 2025 to celebrate this momentous occasion. All parents, grandparents, past and current members and volunteers/leaders will be invited to this celebration, so please keep your eyes peeled for further information with regard to this event.

Finally, again many thanks to all of you who have provided support by way of assistance to 1[st] Bispham. We look forward to welcoming you very much throughout 2025/26 to the variety of activities which will be organised in the coming year. Please feel free to join in the fun!

Treasurer’s Report

The accounts this year show a healthy picture - this being aided significantly with over £12K income from den hire. This slightly reduced from last year, however still an extremely helpful income to assist with the running costs of the HQ.

We are up to date with claiming gift aid from HMRC and can I say a big thank you to all parents who have completed gift aid forms.

Income from subscriptions has remained on track as we welcome more boys and girls into the group. It was also good to see a great turn out for our annual Xmas Fair, which provided a positive return.

The running costs of the den show a slight reduction from last year; we continue to be extremely diligent and monitor costs to ensure we manage and conserve monies wherever possible, whilst ensuring the building is running in an efficient and comfortable environment for all.

We have some significant capital expenditure “items” (new fire doors, internal decorating, new camping equipment) requirements/planned for the forthcoming year, as well as celebrating our Centenary year – these will be budgeted for and monies spent wisely.

Our overall bank balances are healthy, but we need to ensure that we must maintain a "reserve" whilst at the same time ensure we can keep the fantastic building and facilities to the high standard that it currently is.

Looking ahead, and as Trustees, we are and intend to closely monitor all our income and expenditure to ensure we continue to be able to enjoy this facility and be able to provide Scouting and Guiding at this excellent Headquarters for years to come.

The Squirrels have enjoyed another busy and fun packed year. We have awarded lots of activity badges and awards, including 5 Chief Scout Acorn Awards. The Squirrels enjoy working towards their badges and regularly let us know what they want to get involved with or find out about next!

We have enjoyed getting out and meeting other members of the Scouting family. Some of us joined with other Blackpool Squirrels for a balance bike session at Palatine Sports Centre where we made new Squirrel friends. We were excited to join in the St George’s day celebration again with the whole district at Stanley Park, especially the chance to try some archery. Some of us received our badges at the Founders Day service at St Stephen’s on the Cliffs, enjoying feeling part of the celebration.

As part of our badge work, we particularly enjoyed learning all about space for our Space Explorers badge, making tin foil helmets for our toys and representing the solar system using fruit. We have learnt about emergency aid and had a go at bandaging each other in a session lead by one of our parents who is a nurse. We held a Highland Games night, wellie throwing and sponge caber tossing and made shortbread to celebrate St Andrew’s day. We also had a visit from Gracie and found out all about Malawi and the amazing things she will do during her trip.

5

We have also picked litter, been on a local walk spotting and using a basic map, we have planted seeds and watched them grow, played new games, invented new games and even managed over 100 seconds of silence towards one of our centenary challenges. We have had a tremendous amount of fun and acquired a lot of new skills.

Just like the children, our drey continues to grow and learn. We now have 12 Squirrels and although we have had some leader changes, we now are building up our parent helpers so that our drey can continue to develop and grow. We are looking forward to another exciting year including the centenary celebrations.

We begin as we always do, thinking about how it has been another busy 12 months here at 1st Bispham Beavers!

We have been working hard each Thursday night; having lots of fun, learning new things, facing challenges, and making new friends. We have also been out and about too!

Back in April we joined the whole of Blackpool District to celebrate St George’s Day in the Park – the sun shone all afternoon which makes a change! We enjoyed a treasure hunt around the park, as well as archery, catapults, and tug of war before renewing our Beaver Scout Promise at the Bandstand. (We were the smartest colony by far! 😊 )

Our colony is forever growing and active, we have enjoyed welcoming visitors to our colony as well as trying lots of new things for the very first time. Our ‘Well-being night of Yoga, face and hand massages went down a treat!

We thoroughly enjoyed the BOTT Elmer Elephant walk around Blackpool Town Centre – it was little windy on the promenade but thankfully the rain stayed away! We enjoyed attending the Blackpool Beaver District ‘Great Outdoors Sleepover back in June… we loved camping in tents, archery, slacklines, den building, tomahawks, campfires, s’mores, nature and very little sleep! Thank you to the District Team for hosting this event. We pride ourselves on looking after our local community and keeping the area clean and tidy where we can.

www.1stbispham.org.uk

7

Our annual visit to Blackpool Illuminations was thoroughly enjoyable and the chips always go down a treat! We are very grateful for all the extra help we had on this night too with our ever-growing colony numbers!

In the Autumn Term we joined other

colonies in Blackpool to earn our Musician Badge – we enjoyed learning about our own voices as musical instruments as well as meeting volunteers who are musicians

In December we came together to support those in need. A huge thank you for all the generous food donations that we were able to give to local charities in need.

In January we supported our Beaver Scouts who were performing on The Grand Theatre Stage in Blackpool Gang Show – we were so very proud!

2024 – 205 has meant the chance to continue to work towards lots of different badges….a whopping 293 in total! Here are just a few….Adventure, Outdoors, Communicator, Experiment, Health and Fitness, Musician, Emergency Aid, and Youth Shape – Centre, Plan and Lead.

www.1stbispham.org.uk

8

In February we joined with over 130 Squirrels and other Beavers to celebrate Founders Day and the birthday of our Founder Lord Baden Powell.

We also congratulated Beaver Scouts on achieving the Chief Scout Bronze Award, the highest award you can earn as a Beaver. This also meant we had to say goodbye to lots of young people who moved onto Cubs.

We have so much more planned and still to do! So, watch this space! As the Colony continues to grow and grow and grow……. a big thank you; to you the parents for your support in providing that necessary taxi service each Thursday as well as to all the other events over the past year!

Finally, for all the above to take place a great deal of planning, commitment, enthusiasm, and time is required. A special thank you must go to all the Leadership Team at 1st Bispham, Julie (Badger), Darrell (Fox), Heather (Squirrel) Eleanor (Mole YL) Sienna (Hedgehog YL), Aidan (Finch YL), Ben (Chipmunk YL), Lily (Robin YL) and Lesley (who was previously Grey Beaver at 1st Bispham who has kindly come back to help!) without you simply none of this would be possible – especially when I am having one of ‘my Emma ideas!’ Thank you ☺

Here’s to another action-packed fun filled time at 1st Bispham Beavers! Emma Hornby, Grey Beaver

– Cub Report 2024 our year of Olympic fun, international adventure and a winning performance on the stage!

April saw us host a visit from a very special visitor, Holly – a Scout leader from Germany who talked to us all about what Scouts is like in Germany, showed us their uniform and badges and taught us some German words. We experienced our own international adventure later that month taking part in the Junior Jamboree camp, which was organised and delivered by the team of young people who attended the World Scout Jamboree in Korea. We took part in Jamborees got Talent, our Cubs and Beavers singing the Continents song. We had a fantastic dance performance from two of our Cubs, who went on to win the entire contest! Well done to Alfie and George!!

www.1stbispham.org.uk

10

In May , we joined the rest of Blackpool District for the annual BOTT (Blackpool On The Trail) walk, following the Elmer trail of elephants through the town centre. The cubs worked so well together and kept themselves and each other safe while seeing the sights of the town.

Lots more fun and activities inside and out over the following couple of months. In July , we took part in the Commissioners Flag competition held at the Zoo, and finished the Summer Term with a cinema trip to watch Despicable Me 2.

www.1stbispham.org.uk

11

Over the Summer break, several cubs camped with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers from the UK and Overseas, as we took part in Red Rose, an international camp held at Westmorland Showground, just outside Kendal.

We returned after the summer holidays ready for more adventure, and again we looked to the world stage – the Olympics! We held our pack holiday in November with a sporty camp, where Cubs participated to earn medals for their Countries. An opening and closing ceremony, Olympic torch making, medals and flags was followed by archery, shooting, tomahawks and a picture-perfect campfire.

www.1stbispham.org.uk

12

We finished off for Xmas with a great night of UV bowl, the cubs showing their competitive streaks!

In the New Year, some of the pack went to watch lots of 1st Bispham Beavers, Cubs and Leaders perform in the Blackpool Gang Show at the Grand Theatre. The show took the Cubs on a trip around the world – what else on our year of International Adventure!

In February, we visited Liverpool World Museum, and then March saw another 5 of our young people reach for the stars as they were awarded their top award – the Chief Scout Silver – in front of the Mayor at the Town Hall. This is the highest award a Cub Scout can earn and is testament to the hard work and effort those young people have put in during their time in Cubs! So, a huge congratulations to Rupert, George, Lucy, Annabel and Hugh, fantastic role models who we know will do amazingly well in Scouts.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team of volunteers, who give up their time every week (and often weekends too, as you’ll see from the above) to give your young people these fantastic experiences and opportunities. We’re always on the lookout for more help, so if you’re interested in joining the team and what to have as much fun as we are, please speak to Kelly.

So, a huge thankyou from me to Steve, Keith, Sam, Connie, Owen, Richard and Carol, and a very big welcome to our newest young leader, Ben. Thank you all for the time and support you give, sharing these adventures with you all is my honour and privilege. Thank you also to the parents and carers of our young people – we appreciate all your support!

The Scout Troop have had yet another brilliant year over 2024 and 2025 so far. This year we waved farewell to a great bunch of older Scouts, who we hope are now enjoying their Explorer Scout journey. Our troop still has a steady number of enthusiastic members, that enjoy our weekly meetings, as well as our camps and days out.

Over 2024/25 we have attended 3 county run events, County Rally, Red Rose 24 and Crew Challenge. We also attended our districts St George’s day event in Stanley park, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The first camp we attended in 2024 was County Rally. County Rally is a weekend of adventure and activities at Waddecar, where Scouts from all over West Lancs came together to have fun and make new friends. We had 8 scouts attend this event joining up with the rest of Blackpool district to try, and in some cases compete, in activities such as rock climbing, air riffle shooting, archery, canoeing, tug of war and axe throwing to name a few.

In August our troop attended Red Rose 2024 as a combined troop with 1[st] Windermere. The Scouts camped together for a week on Westmoreland Showground, alongside 1500 Scouts from around the world. During this event our Scouts had a jam packed week of adventurous activities, cultural experiences, evening entertainment, overcoming challenges, and forming fantastic new friendships.

Our third and last big event was Crew challenge, held on Beacon Fell in November. Crew Challenge is a competition where Scouts navigate the fell to locate challenge bases, and compete with their teams to earn points. This year’s team came in at 12[th] place out of over 100 teams which is a fantastic achievement!

I would like to thank our leaders, Gemma, Malley and Aniela, for their week in, week out commitment to help provide a balanced program and passing on their skills so that our young people can learn, enjoy and develop.

This last year as always has been a busy year for the Rainbows. We currently have 40 Rainbows, 10 of which have just joined us and 8 of them have just left to join Brownies. We have 7 on the waiting list although not all of those are Rainbow age yet. Even with a strong leadership team we rely on parent helpers to ensure our adult to Rainbow ratios are maintained.

Just before Easter 7 Rainbows achieved their Gold Award which is the highest award that the Rainbows can get. This means over there Rainbow Journey they will have completed 6 theme awards, involving 6 skills builders, 6 interest badges and lots of hours undertaking unit meeting activities. This is very exciting and a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of them all. We also awarded 3 Silver swards and 17 Bronze awards which is the most we have ever awarded in 1 go.

In the Summer term of 2024, we worked towards our Sea Savers badge and learn all about the ocean and how to protect it. We completed our badge with a trip to the Sea Life Centre and had great fun watching all the sea creatures and learning about them. We also worked towards and achieved our Ready Steady Help challenge badge. This involved learning about everyday risks and how we can reduce these, we made our own hurricanes and what we would need in an emergency and how to call for help. We had a fun night playing lots of water games and we had a campfire, singing lots of songs and made yummy smores.

In the Autumn term the girls worked towards the Have Adventures theme award, which included the Camp skills builder badge where they girls had to build a den and know what to pack if they were going away. We did lots of different activities such as becoming an astronaut and walking on the moon, we worked out what we would need when it’s hot and when it’s cold and we made a lovely collage of all 4 seasons with lots of natural materials. The girls also worked towards the nature and agility badges in order to complete the theme award.

The autumn term is always busy as we had a Halloween party, walked down the illuminations with chips It was a busy term as we also went to see Alice returns to Wonderland ice show at the Blackpool and also enjoyed doing lots of bonfire

night activities such as making smores and edible sparklers. We did lots of Christmas crafts and for Christmas party we had an Elf bounce night at Air hop where we had lots of fun and raised nearly £400 for the Blackpool Hospital Blueskies Charity fund.

In the Spring term the girls have worked towards the Take Action Theme award which involved the Influence skills builder and the Helper badge. The girls made recycled paper, duck food, we collected things that we could sell on our bring and buy stall and we raised a huge £185 which worked out as £92.50 for Brian House charity and £92.50 for the local RSPCA charities chosen by the Rainbows. We also completed the Legacy badge and we have created a time capsule and had a camp fire and made yet more smores. We celebrated World Thinking Day celebrating Greece as Pangaiota our Young Leader is Greek. We also enjoyed making and eating pancakes for pancake day. We had a lovely Easter party to end the term with.

In March we had a non-sleepover sleepover be a Princess for the day afternoon, where the Rainbows created princess crafts, decorated some princess biscuits and cakes, got ready for the princess part at the spa all before having a princess party dressed in our finery and enjoyed afternoon tea. Then it was time for pj’s and snuggle down in our sleeping bags with some popcorn and a movie, a great day was had by all.

We have lots more exciting things planned for this coming year so watch this Space !

Our brownie unit once again has had an exciting and eventful year. Myself and brown owl have had a busy time organising events and activities for our girls. The unit numbers during the year have remained steady, our unit continues to flourish. We currently have 36 girls in our unit. We continue to encourage girls to carry on with their guiding journeys up to brownies from rainbows, and onto guide from brownies.

We are very lucky to continue to have support from our leadership team, we have 6 leaders and have an additional leader in training.

The girls have continued to work towards the brownie programme, receiving interest badges, skills builder and theme awards.

Over the last year girls have achieved the theme express myself, alongside two regional badges. The sea Savers badge was in collaboration with Sea life to complete activities to learn about conservation. We joined this up with a visit to the Sea life centre in Blackpool. The legacy explore badge was looking at the history and heritage of Girlguiding. Both of these badges are specific to Girlguiding north west region.

The girls have also achieved the bronze, silver and gold awards. The gold award is the highest award that can be achieved within the brownies programme

www.1stbispham.org.uk

19

We as leaders are very proud of all our girl’s achievement, as every week they complete task and activities to gain each badge and award.

Brownie Pack Holiday (camp)

Our yearly pack holiday was once again held at Fylde Activity Centre. This year was Disney Princess theme. The girls did princess theme craft. We had and afternoon test followed by a surprise Princess ball with the girls dressing in their princess dresses. Additionally, the girls had the opportunity to try indoor climbing and archery. An we held a camp fire.

We’ve had another busy year and we’ve maintained our capacity all year, with older members moving on and new members joining us from outside our Guiding family and Brownies flying up.

In the summer we enjoyed a group camp top Waddecar despite the weather being less than clement. The Guides completed 3 badges on the camp; stage 5 Camp Skills Builder, backwoods cooking and I’m a survivor- guide me out of here. Camp Stage 5 Skills builder required separate tasks to be completed. The Guides had to build a shelter, bake cakes in a cardboard oven, explore how to maintain hygiene and store food on camp and how to repair a tent. We also played Frisbee Golf and built mini rafts on this camp.

----- End of picture text -----

We are not planning a Guide camp this year but are excited to be joining the Group camp later in the 2025.

In the autumn term of 2024, we completed the Sea Savers Badge which GirlGuiding North West have produced in partnership with the Sea Life Centre. Activities included creating a method of communicating through song as whales do, finding ways to clean an oil spill, food chains and ocean acidity. We also enjoyed a trip to the sea Life Centre in July with the Rainbows and Brownies.

www.1stbispham.org.uk

21

During this term we also went on a group trip to see Moana at the cinema and took part in the annual Airhop Christmas trip raising money through the Elf Bounce.

This spring term we have been working on our Natural Remedies interest badge. We’ve investigated perfumes and natural scents and created our own perfumes. We have also looked into how to create homemade face and hair masks. The final part of this badge work required the Guides to create a brand for their natural products.

We’ve had a busy start to the year and hopefully the summer term of 2025 will be just as busy whilst we complete our 100 challenges activities for the centenary celebrations of the unit.
