Scout & Guide Group Annual Report 2023-2024

#GoodForYou

www.1stbispham.org.uk

Chairman and Group Lead Volunteer Report

The last 12 months has seen the Group continue to grow from strength to strength with increasing membership in all Sections. Total membership is now 180, with all sections prospering and providing countless opportunities for all our young people to develop and learn new skills. Looking at all the reports which follow, all sections have been very active all year in one form or another.

In 2023 opened a Squirrel Drey, (a new Scouting Section for 4- and 5-year-olds). We are pleased to report that this section is thriving and 15 Squirrels are enjoying their start along their Scouting journey, as you can see and read from the attached report. Well done to all our Squirrel Leaders for making this happen.

The success of the Group would not be possible without the help of all our Volunteers. Our sincere thanks go to all these Volunteers who continue to give their time without any recompense - whatsoever!

Special thanks also to all parent helpers who have assisted at meetings and events. This help is greatly appreciated and long may it continue as it makes a big difference and provides that extra support to the Volunteers.

We are always on the lookout for new volunteers for both our Scouting and Guiding sections. If you, as parents, would wish to help in any way please don’t hesitate to approach the appropriate section volunteers.

Our “Tuesday” club has continued to ensure that the 1[st] Bispham Headquarters remains in excellent condition - see the Tuesday club section of the report for the list of tasks completed. Again, on behalf of us all we would like to thank them for all the time they give and the tremendous work they do.

To offset the increased running costs of the HQ, we have again been extremely successful in hiring out the facility to outside organisations during the day. We are delighted to report, and see from the accounts, that this year this has been our most successful yet Sincere thanks to Eileen Sanday (our Bookings Secretary) for all her tremendously hard work in managing bookings – thank you Eileen.

From a business perspective we are carefully managing our finances to ensure that we can maintain the excellent facilities we have today in the condition we are enjoying today – whilst protecting our reserves, just in case. Our energy costs/HQ running costs have

2

increased over the last 12 months (as one would have expected in the current climate) however we continue to carefully monitor the usage.

As mentioned in last year’s report the Group will celebrate its 100[th] anniversary in the summer of 2025 and we are starting to scope events to mark this extraordinary occasion – more details to follow in due course!

Finally, again many thanks to all of you who have provided support by way of assistance at meetings/events. We look forward to welcoming you very much throughout 2024/25 to the variety of activities which will be organised in the coming year. We look forward to seeing everyone at these events in the coming year.

Treasurer’s Report

The accounts this year show a healthy picture - this being aided significantly with over £16K income from den hire. We are up to date with claiming gift aid from HMRC and can I say a big thank you to all parents who have completed gift aid forms.

Income from subscriptions has increased as we welcome more boys and girls into the group. It was also good to see a great turn out for our annual Xmas Fair, which provided a positive return.

The running costs of the den however, do show an increase from last year of 55% mainly due to the rise in energy costs for the HQ. As times move ahead, we are continuing to monitoring the energy costs/tariffs to ensure we are "saving" costs wherever possible, i.e. appropriate tariffs etc.

We have taken the opportunity this year to purchase some "new" capital items (new tables for upstairs room and installation of digital technology . both upstairs and downstairs) to help in the delivering of Scouting and Guiding in our fantastic HQ.

Our overall bank balances are healthy, but we need to ensure that we maintain a "reserve" whilst at the same time ensure we can keep the fantastic building and facilities to the high standard that it currently is.

Looking ahead, and as a Group Trustees, we are and intend to closely monitor all our income and expenditure to ensure we continue to be able to enjoy this facility and be able to provide Scouting and Guiding at this excellent Headquarters for years to come.

We have enjoyed a busy year at Squirrels and our drey is now over a year old. We have had 6 of our original Squirrels move up to Beavers and 3 have received their Chief Scout Acorn Award.

They really enjoying gaining badges and we have been busy working on our activity badges and awards. To gain these we participated in the JOTT, had a go at making s’mores over the campfire, made indoor dens and junk models, played glow in the dark skittles, took part in the RSPB Big Bird Watch, had a go at plenty of craft activities and even had a go at learning how to use chopsticks! We have asked questions of a police officer and enjoyed trying on helmets, handcuffs, jackets and vests. We also had a very exciting evening with soft archery and tomahawks. They are keen to try anything and continue to surprise us with their skills, questions and enthusiasm.

We continue to grow and develop as a drey, both the children and the leaders. We have 10 Squirrels currently and a capacity with current leaders to take 12. We are looking forward to another exciting 12 months.

We begin as we always do, thinking about how it has been another busy 12 months here at 1st Bispham Beavers!

We have been working hard each Thursday night; having lots of fun, learning new things, facing challenges, and making new friends. We have also been out and about too!

Back in April we joined the whole of Blackpool District to celebrate St George’s Day in the Park – the sun shone all afternoon which makes a change! We enjoyed a treasure hunt around the park, as well as archery, catapults, and tug of war before renewing our Beaver Scout Promise at the Bandstand.

In May we volunteered to take part in the ‘Big Help Out’ (King

Charles asked….and we couldn’t say no!) We spent an hour in our local park litter picking thanks to the support of our families too.

Thanks to our local councillor Jo we have received a donation of vis-jackets, litter pickers and gloves so we can keep up with our work in the local community.

The summer months are a great time to become ‘green fingered’ and we put our gardening skills to the test!

www.1stbispham.org.uk

7

In September we braved Fleetwood Boating Lake for night of kayaking – something we haven’t done for a long time. The team of

volunteers were great, although I am not sure some of the Beavers have forgiven me……as they spent a lot of time in the freezing water and would have preferred to stay on dry land!

In October we supported our Beaver Scouts who were performing on The Grand Theatre Stage in Blackpool Gang Show – we were so very proud!

Some of visited Bibby’s Farm for the County Skills day, the best part was cooking and eating our own pizzas on the fire! Yum!

Our annual visit to Blackpool Illuminations was thoroughly enjoyable and the chips always go down a treat! We are very grateful for all the extra help we had on this night too with our ever-growing colony numbers!

December brought ‘Carols around the Campfire’ a chance to join other members of Blackpool District. A huge thank you for all the

generous food donations that we were able to give to local charities in need.

A group of Beavers also visited a Forest School to create Christmas Crafts. Thank you to Blackpool District Beaver Team for putting this event together, and we finished off the year with a Christmas party at Ascent.

2024 has meant the chance to continue to work towards lots of different badges. We have particularly focussed on the Activity Badges – Explore, Safety, Communicator, Experiment, Hobbies, Creative, Money skills, Teamwork, Skills and Outdoor Personal Challenge to name a few!

In February we joined with over 160 other Beavers on a trip to Manchester Science Museum. Another jam-packed fun day that involved learning lots of new facts a Poo exhibition wanting to eat our packed lunches at 9am on the coach there!

A huge thank you to the team who represented 1[st] Bispham at ‘The Great Beaver Bake Off’ We are always so very proud of 1[st] Bispham wherever we go!

We congratulated many Beaver Scouts on achieving the Chief Scout Bronze Award, the highest award you can earn as a Beaver. This also meant we had to say goodbye to lots of young people who moved onto Cubs.

We have so much more planned and still to do! So, watch this space! As the Colony continues to grow and grow and grow……. a big thank you; to you the parents for your support in providing that necessary taxi service each Thursday as well as to all the other events over the past year!

Finally, for all the above to take place a great deal of planning, commitment, enthusiasm, and time is required. With an ever-growing colony I am reliant on such a supportive Leadership Team. This year we have sadly said goodbye to Matt (Owl) and Jordan (Mouse) from our leadership team who between them have over 20 years combined service to 1[st] Bispham Beavers. They are incredibly missed but we wish them lots of luck in their other Scouting roles.

A special thank you must go to all the Leadership Team at 1[st] Bispham, Julie (Badger), Darrell (Fox), Sienna (Hedgehog YL), Heather (Squirrel) Eleanor (Mole YL) Aidan (YL), Ben (YL) and Lesley (Robin – who was previously Grey Beaver at 1[st] Bispham who has kindly come back to help!) without you simply none of this would be possible – especially when I am having one of ‘my Emma ideas!’ Thank you ☺

Here’s to another action-packed fun filled time at 1st Bispham Beavers!

Wow, what another great year it’s been. It’s gone so fast, and we’ve packed a lot in! In April we joined the rest of Blackpool District to celebrate St Georges day in style, with an action-packed day in Stanley Park. We renewed our promises, and remembered what it is to be a Cub Scout. The following weekend, we had our Medieval themed Spring Pack Holiday, where we made incredible sword and shields and took parts in lots of adventurous activities. We had an amazing time doing archery, tomahawk Throwing, a campfire and even got to attack the cardboard fortresses we had made! We packed a LOT of adventure into 3 days!

In May , a team of cubs took part in the Jack Lamb competition, an annual Scouting Skills competition for Blackpool Cub Scouts. The team did extremely well, and more importantly we received incredible feedback about their behaviour and manners 😊

www.1stbispham.org.uk

10

The summer months saw us cooking outside, playing games and Tomahawk Throwing in the sunshine. We took part in the Commissioners Flag competition, and finished the Summer Term with a night of UV bowling.

We returned after the summer holidays excited for our next adventure! First up was the Race to Silver Camp in September, which saw some of the pack completing the final parts of their Chief Scout Silver awards. The cubs who attended put up their own tents, learnt new skills, and prepared and cooked their own evening meal over the fire!

www.1stbispham.org.uk

11

In October we visited Manchester Airport visitors centre – an incredible trip which saw us meet cabin crew and pilots, discover all the different jobs that happen in an airport, explore lots of different aircraft and we event got to sit on CONCORDE!! A brilliant experience for all of us 😊

The winter months had us completing badge work as well as enjoying ourselves with a lego night, and escape room, the District Carol Service and our annual Illuminations Walk with a specially designed quiz. We finished the year with a well-deserved trip to the Cinema.

In the New Year, most of the pack achieved their Snowsports badge by undertaking a taster session at Ski Rossendale. The Cubs learnt about the equipment, basic skiing and had a blast shooting down the slopes on rubber rings.

www.1stbispham.org.uk

12

To top off an incredible year, we had 7 Cubs invited to attend the Town Hall to be presented with their Chief Scout Silver award! This is the highest award a Cub Scout can earn and is testament to the hard work and effort those young people have put in during their time in Cubs! So, a huge congratulations to those who managed to get their Silver this time – a massive achievement, very well deserved!

Lots of badges have also been covered this year, including International, musician, scientist and Teamwork to name but a few.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team of volunteers, who give up their time every week (and often weekends too, as you’ll see from the above) to give your young people these fantastic experiences and opportunities. We’ve been lucky enough to gain a few new faces in the Cub Team recently to help with this, and we’re delighted to welcome them. So, a heartfelt thankyou from me to Keith, Sam, Carol, Owen, Richard, Connie and Ben, and a very big welcome to Steve, Arnold and Pola. Thank you all for the time and support you give, sharing these adventures with you all is my honour and privilege.

Thank you also to the parents and carers of our young people – we appreciate all your support!

1[st] Bispham Scout Troop have had another fantastic year over 2023/24, with our number staying at a steady 20 young people week in week out. Our Scouts have been enthusiastically enjoying and joining in with a variety of activities in our weekly meetings and on weekends.

The first event that we attended was the return of the National Scout Car races at Wombwell kart circuit in Barnsley. We took a team of 4 scouts to compete against other troops from around the country. Although no trophies came home with us a great day was had by all and we can't wait to enter again this year.

August 2023 saw our summer camp. We stayed at Silverhelme Scout Campsite near Arnside for a weekend. The main activity of the camp was a walk between the campsite and Arnside solely navigated by our young people. The rest of the weekend was focused on enhancing the Scouts’ camping skills and of course playing games and having fun.

Our troop nights this year have had our young people become Aviation enthusiasts, Masters of Watersports, budding DIYers and Film Directors.

Last summer we visited Fairhaven Lake where the Scouts demonstrated excellent teamwork Paddle Boarding. Later in the year we were lucky enough to have a tour of the Production and Development hangar at BAE SYSTEMS to see first-hand the work on the Eurofighter Typhoon program. Other activities that we have undertaken involve creating, hiding and then finding geocaches around the village and making bird boxes using saws, hammers and drills.

Our leadership team have also been out having fun earlier on this year by attending the black-tie dinner put on by west Lancs scouts at Ribby hall to celebrate all that the adult members of scouts do for the movement.

So, on that note I would like to thank our leaders, Gemma, Malley and Aniella, for all that they do to make sure that the young people at our troop have an enjoyable and worthwhile time at scouts.

This last year as always has been a busy year for the Rainbows. We currently have 35 Rainbows and 14 on the waiting list although not all of those are Rainbow age yet. Even with a strong leadership team we rely on parent helpers to ensure our adult to Rainbow ratios are maintained. In Dec 2 Rainbows achieved their Gold Award which is the highest award that the Rainbows can get. This means over there Rainbow Journey they will have completed 6 theme awards, involving 6 skills builders, 6 interest badges and lots of hours undertaking unit meeting activities. This is very exciting and a fantastic achievement.

In the Summer term of 2023, the girls worked towards their Skills for my future theme award, completing the Lead skills builder and either the book lover or construction badge. In May we celebrated the King’s Coronation by having a joint party with the Brownies and Guides, we made crowns and had afternoon tea. In May we also went on a County trip to Blackpool Zoo which was a super day out. In the Summer term we also had the RLNI visit us. We had a fun night playing lots of water games and for our last night before we broke up for the summer, we had a joint campfire with the Brownies and Guides, singing lots of songs and made yummy smores.

In the Autumn term the girls worked towards the Be Well Theme Award achieving the Feel-good skills builder and either the healthy mind or fruit and veg badge. We enjoyed a walk down the illuminations with a yummy bag of chips. The leaders were very proud of the way we behaved and the amount of walking we did. In the October half term, we went to see the Blackpool Gang Show at the Grand Theatre which was brilliant and all the girls had a great time. We also had fun at our annual Halloween party. We also enjoyed a country trip with the Brownies to see the High Jinx show at Blackpool Tower Circus which was great fun and the magic was incredible. It was a busy term as we also went to see Alice returns to Wonderland ice show at the Blackpool Ice Rink where we all enjoyed it enormously. For our last night before we broke up for Christmas, we had an Elf bounce night at Ascent where we had lots of fun and raised nearly £900 for the Blackpool Hospital Blueskies Charity fund.

In the Spring term the girls have worked towards the Know Myself Theme award which involved the Network skills builder and either the Family tree or Animal lover badge. We celebrated World Thinking Day by travelling around the world in 1 hr. We visited Mexico, Australia, India, England and Africa. We also enjoyed making and eating pancakes for pancake day. We had a lovely Easter party to end the term with.

We have lots more exciting things planned for this coming year so watch this Space !

Our brownie unit once again has had an exciting and eventful year. Myself and brown owl have had a busy time organising events and activities for our girls.

The unit numbers during the year have remained steady, our unit continues to flourish. We currently have 36 registered girls in the unit. We continue to encourage girls to carry on with their guiding journeys up to brownies from rainbows, and onto guide from brownies.

We have been extremely happy to congratulate Evie on passing her leadership qualification and joining our team.

The girls have continued to work towards the brownie programme, receiving interest badges, skills builder and theme awards.

Over the last year girls have achieved the following theme awards.

The girls have also achieved the bronze, silver and gold awards. The gold award is the highest award

That can be achieved within the brownies programme

www.1stbispham.org.uk

17

We as leaders are very proud of all our girl’s achievement, as every week they complete task and activities to gain each badge and award.

Brownie Pack Holiday (camp)

Our yearly pack holiday was once again held at Fylde Activity Centre. This year was Harry potter theme. The girls arrived through platform 9 and 3/4 , and had two days of harry potter related craft and activity. Additionally, the girls had the opportunity to try indoor climbing and archery.

As always, the aim of brownies is to be a place of fun an enjoyment. Over the coming months we aim for the girls to achieve further badges and awards. We look forward to what the next 12 months has to bring.

We’ve had another busy year and we’ve maintained our full capacity all year, with older members moving on and new members joining us from outside our Guiding family and Brownies flying up.

This year Ellie planned our summer camp to Waddecar where we enjoyed lots of different activities including archery, frisbee golf, a challenge course and cooking over open fires. For some of the Guides it was their first time on an outdoor camp so it was an exciting new experience for the girls. We’re in the process of arranging another summer camp to Waddecar in June 2024 where we’re hoping to try some new activities including crate stacking. It is a great opportunity for the Guides to learn some new skills and enhance their confidence.

Throughout our Guide meeting this year we have been working towards different skills builder and interest badges. Most of the unit competed Make a Change Stage 4 Skills builder which was all about how to think about other and the environment. It was an interesting badge to achieve as allowed the Guides to express their opinions on all sorts of issues that affect them and others they know. They had to create surveys, design canvases of kindness and think about the steps they could take to improve negative impacts we have on the planet.

We have also completed the investigating badge. To get this badge, the Guides must use a detective kit to investigate some evidence. We used dusting powder (coco powder), little brushes and a magnifying glass to take finger prints, collect them and then view them. The 2[nd] part of the badge required to create something scientific; we made lava lamps using old bottles, oil, water, food colouring and effervescent tablets. The Guides enjoyed making the lava lamps a lot.

www.1stbispham.org.uk

19

What the Guides love more than anything is being creative and when it came to Remembrance Day, I wanted to let them be as creative as possible. I gave them a brief of ‘making a poppy’ and left each Guide to design their own poppy with whatever craft materials their wanted to. The result was a beautiful display with lots of individual flowers.

We’ve enjoyed our illuminations walk this year. I think what the Guides enjoy most is being with their friends and talking about the illuminations and their likes and dislikes. Oh, and don’t forget the chips!

For our last session before Christmas, we went to Ascent with the Rainbows and Brownies. Some of the Guides really enjoy looking after the younger members of the group and take on a young leader style role. I am certain there are some future leaders in the making. They all enjoy going to Ascent; it gives them a chance to blow of some steam and socialise in a less structured way.

The rest of the year involves us completing our Reflect Stage 5 skills builder badge and our Confectionery badge.

We’re also hoping to plan a trip this term too.

Tuesday Club

A couple of retired people work hard behind the scenes striving to keep the Den functioning and to the standard that we have come to love and enjoy.

Regular jobs include:

Mowing lawns, weeding and pruning bushes. Application of weedkiller on Drive and Car Park. Regularly checking Emergency Lights and replacing batteries and fittings. Regularly checking Fire Alarm call points. AED readiness reporting. And probably all sorts else.

One off Jobs this year include:

Along with several other volunteers painting all the walls in the downstairs hall. Fitting new door lock to upstairs unisex toilet. Replacing missing toilet roll holders. Checking and replacing all rubber feet on tables and chairs ready for new floor. Liaising with the electrician fitting the new TV screens. Making good surrounding plasterwork after TV screens fitted. Painting TV cabinet downstairs Liaising with contractors who sanded and varnished the floor. Varnishing the skirting boards after flooring contractors finished. Removing and disposing of all the old tables from the upstairs Hall. Perhaps the most important job of the year was replacing the leaking tap on the Brew Boiler, for without regular cups of tea no work at all would get done!

New members

If anybody has spare time and would like to help, we’d love to meet you. Although we traditionally used to meet on Tuesdays, we have more recently liaised on Sunday night to find the best time, fitting in our commitments with that of the bookings in the Den

Apologies if I’ve missed any jobs out or not given credit where it’s due, and many thanks to all who have helped in any way.

Pete and Vic.
