Young Farmers is an organisation dedicated to supporting young people in agriculture and the countryside and provides a unique opportunity for members to develop skills, work with the local community, travel abroad, take part in a varied competitions programme and enjoy a dynamic social life.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
The Lancashire Federation has around 700 members aged between 10 and 26 based within 17 Clubs around the County. The movement aims to assist in the education and development of young people, in their spiritual and intellectual capacities, in self-reliance and responsibility, so that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of the community.
Young Farmers is probably one of the only youth organisations to allow young people to develop in this way, completely under their own management through the movement's democratic structure. The County Office organises competitions throughout the calendar year such as stock judging, ten pin bowling, public speaking, swimming, arts & crafts, where Clubs compete against each other to win prize cards, trophies and the top winners can then go on to compete against other Counties across the Country.
The Trustees of the Federation meet four times a year and oversee & approve the annual accounts. They ratify all management committee minutes in line with our County Constitution. All Trustees are given guidance from the Charity Commission upon taking the role and use this as guidance at their meetings.
Further information about the charity and its operations can be found on the website: www.lfyfc.org.uk
Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)
Lancashire Federation of Young Farmers is assisted with the help of volunteers who give their time up to help run the organisation. Without this continued contribution, we would not be able to achieve and support our young farmers of the future.
You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:
-
policy on grantmaking;
-
policy programme related investment;
We rely on volunteers, parents and ex young farmers with the organisation and running of the Federation including all competitions and events throughout the calendar year.
We are a largely self-funded organisation and rely on fundraising throughout the year to raise funds for the Federation to continue. We receive a number of small grants for specific purposes, e.g. training for members.

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
As with the previous year, the 2020/2021 has been overshadowed by ongoing implications the impact of Covid 19 pandemic. As such most of the early activity was online.
As an organisation the Lancs YFC held its AGM on Thursday 26th November 2020 via Zoom at which all elections and county business was discussed and resolved.
Events which were held virtually included:-
-
Beef Live and Carcase Judging
-
• Pig Live and Carcase Judging
-
Virtual Christmas Rally
-
Public Speaking Competitions
-
Member Of The Year
During lockdown some clubs found innovative ways of keeping the YFC spirit alive. For instance, Slaidburn members started a pen-pal service to help bring some joy to elderly and vulnerable people in the local community who had been cut-off from loved ones due to the new restrictions.
National YFC challenged clubs to ‘travel the distance’ between each of the clubs in their county to pass a ‘virtual welly’ from one club to the next, raising funds along the way. Lancashire ‘picked-up the welly’ in November.
From March, limited group, Covid-secure outdoor meetings began again as the next stage of the lockdown was lifted in England.
The first in person competition was the Diary Eliminator held at Whittingham Hall Farm. Other in person events included
-
County Sheep Shearing
-
Stock man of the year
-
Northern Area Stockman.
-
County Tug of War
-
Fence erecting
-
Flower arranging Jump rope
-
The football, kwick cricket and netball competitions
-
County clay pigeon shooting competition
All club and county events were held adhering to Covid guidance.
A new staff member was appointed in July following the old staff member leaving during the Covid outbreak.
Financially, the LFYFC performed well during the pandemic, thanks to the loyalty of the club members, the hard work of county and club officials and the ability to draw down support in the form of government help available.
