## **SALFORD LADS' AND GIRLS' CLUB**

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 August 2025.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements and comply with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Charities SORP "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)".

## **Objectives and activities**

The objects of the charity are to provide a safe, supportive, and inspiring space for children and young people aged 8-19 in Salford, with a particular focus on those facing disadvantage. The charity offers inclusive opportunities for social, emotional, physical, and creative development through structured youth work, sport, culture and heritagebased programmes.

In delivering public benefit, the trustees confirm they have complied with their duty under Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission. All activities are designed to promote the well-being, development, and future opportunities of young people while also strengthening the local community.

The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

## **Achievements and performance**

Throughout the year, Salford Lads' and Girls' Club continued to deliver youth work, football, creative activities, community provision, heritage engagement and cultural events.

More than 300 young people engaged with the Club’s youth activities during the year, supported by a team of approximately 20 volunteers. This included young people taking part in regular youth sessions, sports, creative activities and the Club’s annual residential camp.

Through this provision, young people had access to safe and welcoming spaces, trusted adults, positive relationships and opportunities to take part in activities outside school and home. The Club’s programmes supported young people to develop confidence, social skills, teamwork, independence and a stronger sense of belonging.

The Club also welcomed more than 10,000 heritage visitors during the year. Its heritage and cultural activity enabled visitors to learn about the history of the building, its connection to Salford and its continuing role as a home for youth and community work.

Events and visitor activity also helped to raise awareness of the Club, bring new audiences into the building and generate income to support its charitable work.

Volunteers continued to make an important contribution across youth work, football, heritage activities, events and the operation of the building. In return, volunteers were provided with opportunities to develop experience, skills and connections within their community.

The trustees consider that these activities delivered clear public benefit by supporting young people’s personal and social development, reducing isolation, creating opportunities for community participation and making the Club’s heritage accessible to the wider public.

## **SALFORD LADS' AND GIRLS' CLUB**

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**

The improved financial position was supported by a combination of donations, grant funding, trading activity, shop sales, events and public support.

Trustees recognise that a balanced and sustainable income model is essential to the Club’s long-term future. Grant funding and public appeals remain valuable, but they can be time limited or restricted to particular activities.

The Club therefore continues to develop a broader range of income streams, including:

- shop and merchandise sales

- venue hire

- heritage visits and events

- individual donations

- corporate partnerships

- fundraising activities

- grant funding for eligible projects

The growth in shop sales during the year is encouraging. Trustees will continue to monitor the costs, stock requirements and overall contribution of this activity to ensure that growth is managed sustainably.

Rising staffing, utility, maintenance and building costs continue to place pressure on the charity’s operating model. Trustees will therefore remain focused on increasing recurring unrestricted income while controlling expenditure and protecting the quality of the Club’s charitable provision.

## **Financial review**

The charity has total reserves of £2,241,898 (2024 - £1,975,721) and free reserves after excluding restricted funds of £2,087,127 (2024 - £1,922,311). The charity had restricted funds of £154,771 (2024 - £53,410) comprising donations from various donors for specific projects and developments.

The charity's total income for the year was £638,717 (2024 - £271,770), including donations of £453,684 (2024 - £142,117), income from charitable activities of £180,769 (2024 - £121,301) and investment income of £4,264 (2024 - £3,895). The funds will be used to forward the aims and objectives as detailed in this report.

Total expenditure for the year was £372,540 (2024 - £287,576). The charity made a surplus for the year of £266,177 (2024 - deficit of £15,806).

Income increased significantly during the year, driven principally by income from the Urgent Appeal, grant funding and an increase in shop sales.

The response to the Urgent Appeal demonstrated the strength of public support for the Club and helped to provide greater financial stability following a challenging previous year. Trustees are extremely grateful to the individuals, organisations, funders and partners who supported the charity.

Trustees recognise that the Urgent Appeal represented exceptional rather than recurring income. Although it substantially improved the charity’s immediate financial position, the continued development of reliable unrestricted income remains an important priority.

The increase in shop sales was supported by continued investment in the Club’s retail operations, including increased purchases of goods for resale and a higher level of stockholding. The financial results demonstre positive progress in developing trading activity as a source of income for the charity.

The Club also continued to invest in its people, profile and building. This included increased expenditure on staff training, football coaching qualifications, online learning and a strategy development day for the core team.

Investment in advertising and profile-raising activity included the Red Alert PR campaign and the fundraising event featuring John Cooper Clarke in conversation with Nihal Arthanayake at the Club.

Significant resources were also directed towards the maintenance and improvement of the building, including lighting and heating improvements, general repairs and maintenance, and capital expenditure on the building.

## **SALFORD LADS' AND GIRLS' CLUB**

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**

This investment reflects the charity’s responsibility to care for its historic home while ensuring that the building remains safe, accessible and suitable for youth, community, heritage and cultural activities.

Trustees have considered the charity’s financial position, available resources, current commitments and future plans. On this basis, they consider it appropriate to prepare the accounts on a going concern basis.

It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to between three and six month’s expenditure. The trustees consider this to be represented as an amount of approximately £150,000. The trustees consider that reserves at this level will ensure that, in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the charity’s current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised.

The principal risks identified by trustees include:

- reliance on grants, donations and one-off fundraising income

- the cost of maintaining and operating a historic building

- increases in staffing, utility and other operating costs

- organisational capacity as activities and visitor numbers increase

- maintaining effective safeguarding arrangements across a busy multi-use site

- ensuring sufficient unrestricted income to meet core costs

These risks are managed through trustee oversight, financial monitoring, budgeting, fundraising and income diversification, building maintenance planning, staff and volunteer training, safeguarding procedures and regular operational review.

The charity also maintains appropriate policies, procedures and insurance arrangements to manage its activities and protect its beneficiaries, staff, volunteers, visitors and assets.

## **Plans for future periods**

Trustees intend to build on the progress achieved during 2024 to 2025 by continuing to develop a financially sustainable model that supports the Club’s youth, community, heritage and cultural activities.

Priorities for the coming year include:

- protecting and developing youth and community provision

- increasing recurring and unrestricted income

- continuing the sustainable growth of shop and trading activity

- developing venue hire, heritage visits, events and corporate partnerships

- investing in staff, volunteers and organisational capacity

- improving the collection and reporting of outcomes and impact

- continuing to maintain and improve the Club’s historic building

During the year, the charity secured an offer of up to £437,961 from Historic England towards a major programme of conservation works. Delivery of this project will be a significant priority during the following reporting period and will help protect the building for future generations.

The trustees’ ambition is not simply to preserve the Club’s history, but to ensure that its building and heritage continue to support a living, active charity that provides belonging, opportunity and pride for young people and the wider community.

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**

## **Structure, governance and management**

The charity was registered at the Charity Commission on 19 April 1963, governed by a Board of Trustees to oversee strategic and financial matters and ensure the charity continues to meet its objectives in accordance with the its governing document.

The trustees who served during the year and up to the date of signature of the financial statements were:

A Groves D Lewtas J Holmes L Adams

Trustees are appointed in accordance with the charity’s governing document. When a vacancy arises, the role is advertised to attract suitably qualified and experienced candidates. Applications received are subject to an initial assessment by the Chief Executive Officer, including consideration of relevant experience and the review of references.

Shortlisted candidates are invited to attend an interview, which is conducted by the Chief Executive Officer together with an existing trustee. Following this process, a preferred candidate is identified and their appointment is recommended to the Board of Trustees. The Board retains responsibility for the formal approval and appointment of all trustees.

Trustees remained actively involved in overseeing the charity’s finances, operations, risks and strategic direction throughout the year.

Financial performance, cashflow, expenditure, fundraising, safeguarding and organisational priorities were considered as part of the trustees’ oversight of the charity.

Investment in staff development and strategic planning supported the organisation’s wider development and helped ensure that employees and volunteers had the skills and knowledge required to deliver the Club’s activities effectively.

Trustees remain committed to proportionate and effective governance, clear financial reporting and responsible decision-making in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries.

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**

## **Statement of trustees' responsibilities**

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that year.

In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

- observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

- state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.

The trustees are responsible for keeping sufficient accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The trustees' report was approved by the Board of Trustees.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT**

## **TO THE TRUSTEES OF SALFORD LADS' AND GIRLS' CLUB**

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Salford Lads' and Girls' Club (the charity) for the year ended 31 August 2025.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s financial statements carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011. In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act 2011.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

Since the charity’s gross income exceeded £250,000, the independent examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the Charities Act 2011. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, which is one of the listed bodies.

Your attention is drawn to the fact that the charity has prepared the financial statements in accordance with the relevant version of the Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their financial statements in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) in preference to the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice issued on 1 April 2005 which is referred to in the extant regulations but has now been withdrawn. I understand that this has been done in order for the financial statements to provide a true and fair view in accordance with UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

- 1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Charities Act 2011.

- 2 the financial statements do not accord with those records; or

- 3 the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of financial statements set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the financial statements give a true and fair view, which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

## **SALFORD LADS' AND GIRLS' CLUB**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**

## **1 Accounting policies**

## **Charity information**

Salford Lads' and Girls' Club is a charitable incorporated organisation registered at the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

## **1.1 Basis of preparation**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Charities SORP "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)". The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities not to prepare a statement of cash flows.

The financial statements have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102 rather than the version of the Statement of Recommended Practice which is referred to in the Regulations but which has since been withdrawn.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include the revaluation of freehold properties and to include investment properties and certain financial instruments at fair value. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.

## **1.2 Going concern**

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

## **1.3 Charitable funds**

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.

Designated funds comprise funds which have been set aside at the discretion of the trustees for specific purposes. The purposes and uses of the designated funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors or grantors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Endowment funds are subject to specific conditions by donors that the capital must be maintained by the charity.

## **1.4 Income**

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.

## **SALFORD LADS' AND GIRLS' CLUB**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**

## **1 Accounting policies**

**(Continued)**

## **1.5 Expenditure**

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

## **1.6 Tangible fixed assets**

Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment losses.

Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:

Freehold land and buildings No depreciation Plant and equipment 3-5 years straight line basis Fixtures and fittings 5-10 years straight line basis Computers 3 years straight line basis

## **1.7 Impairment of fixed assets**

At each reporting end date, the charity reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have suffered an impairment loss. If any such indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is estimated in order to determine the extent of the impairment loss (if any).

## **1.8 Stocks**

Stocks are stated at the lower of cost and estimated selling price less costs to complete and sell. Cost comprises direct materials only.

Net realisable value is the estimated selling price less all estimated costs of completion and costs to be incurred in marketing, selling and distribution.

## **1.9 Cash and cash equivalents**

Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities.

## **1.10 Financial instruments**

The charity has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 ‘Basic Financial Instruments’ and Section 12 ‘Other Financial Instruments Issues’ of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments.

Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charity becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.

Financial assets and liabilities are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.

## _**Basic financial assets**_

Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised.

## **SALFORD LADS' AND GIRLS' CLUB**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**

## **1 Accounting policies**

**(Continued)**

## _**Basic financial liabilities**_

Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised.

Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method.

Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

## _**Derecognition of financial liabilities**_

Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.

## **1.11 Employee benefits**

The cost of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee’s services are received.

Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits.

## **1.12 Retirement benefits**

Payments to defined contribution retirement benefit schemes are charged as an expense as they fall due.
