COUNTY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER & ADMIN ASSISTANT REPORT 2022 Jodie Harrison
This year has been an interesting year for County Durham, the first full year back to meetings after a global pandemic. It hasn’t been an easy year for clubs, but they have had an amazing year and we had a record number of members with a whopping 269, which is 67 more members than our last full year pre pandemic.
In the new Year saw the appointment of the new Development Officer and Admin assistant Jodie Harrison, Jodie was excited to get to working with the clubs after the tough 2 years that they had had. In Mid February we got the sad news of Janice Baker retiring after 21 years in her role in County. Janice has been the one consistent thing over the last 21 years, she has seen many a chairperson come and go and has watched each of them grow and flourish from when they start the role to when they finish. Thank you Janice, for your service to Young Farmers, they are some big shoes to fill.
With Janices retirement came the big discussion about did members want an office or did they want the person to work from home, and after lots of research and lots of discussion members decided to go with an Office in Darlington mart, you will find our new County Administrator Jo Martin in the office on Mondays and Thursdays.
County Durham went all out again this year and won the Worshipful Company of Farmers Trophy from National for the Champion Small County Federation whose membership figures are amongst the lowest 50% of Counties in the National Competition Finals 2020-2021. We also came 8[th] overall out of all 43 Counties. A great achievement for such a small County, but it just shows what a bit of team work can do.
We have great relationship with Houghall College and it is great to see one of our members Evan Taylor was nominated for the Yorkshire Agricultural Society Medal for Best Agricultural Student and what better way to top off a day at the Great Yorkshire show than to find out he won it, Evan is not only a star pupil at Houghall but he is also flying the Young Farmer flag high by talking to 50+ student on the level 2 and 3 programmes about Young Farmers and the opportunities that it brings.
Jodie Harrison continued:
You will read full accounts of all the social events and competitions in the Annual report from our F/O chairs Helen Shaw and Emma Sanderson and R/C Chair Alex McMenemy, but it was great to get a Rally Day back up and running after Durham City having to put it on hold for 2 years. Thank you to the Laing Family for been great hosts and letting us use their fantastic facilities, Rally day was a huge success and it was lovely to see everyone getting stuck into all of the competitions. County Durham qualified and competed in 15 out of the 31 National final competitions, a huge effort and a special mention must go the Efficiency with safety team who came 1[st] and also the ladies tug of war team who came 1[st] for the 2[nd] time in a row.
This year has definitely not been the year I had planned and I can probably say the same for our Chairman Michael Moralee, it has been a tough year with staffing changes and a lot of unknow, I would like to thank Michael for the past year, he has been on the end of the phone at all sorts of hours of the day as we have juggled our way through the last 6 months. Your time as Chairman has not been easy Michael, a pandemic and staffing fun, thank you for everything you have done for County!
Thank you to Joanna Herbert and Katie Sanderson for been great Vice Chairs, for helping Michael and myself to complete the extra task we ourselves didn’t have time to do, or just getting that little bit extra clarification that what you are doing is right. I would like to thank Angela Sanderson for her 6[th] year in office as Honouree Treasurer, again Angela this year has had a lot more on than expected so thank you for everything you have done for County it is greatly appreciated. I would like to thank Mr Keith Harrison our President for the last year, you have done a sterling job and it has been lovely seeing you at so many meetings and all of the different competitions. Thank you to F&O Helen Shaw and Emma Sanderson for getting events up and running after nearly a 2 year break it cannot have been easy and thank you Alex McMenemy and your 2 vices Sarah Parsons and Jes Stewart, without your competitions enthusiasm we wouldn’t have had so many members getting back to competitions and doing so well.

WEARDALE YFC 2022 Katie Maddison
Last years October AGM looked pretty uncertain for Weardale YFC coming out of Covid with only 8 signed up members. However on from that we held a new members night on 9[th] November and we were overwhelmed by the turn out and now have regularly around 25 members attending our meetings. Our extra special AGM held on 18[th] January saw Jack Maddison and Charlotte Kemp along with a joint secretary role elected as officers, well done to you all for stepping up.
We have held a variety of meetings over the year from walking net ball, Christmas crafts, quiz and pizza nights, Vet talk, Escape Rooms, Defib Training, Easter Egg Hunt, Rally day and tug of war practises, bowling, slip and slide, stock judging and BBQ night and a 2[nd] recruitment night. All meetings have been well attended by members throughout the year which has been really great to see.
One of the highlight’s for the club this year has to be attending rally day, this would be the first for many of our members this time. Having said that we had 169 entries across the competitions which was just fantastic! So well done to all new members for just giving it a go. Having said that we didn’t just turn up, we were competitive too and won the most points trophy for small clubs. The most memorable competition for us has to be the sardine can, where we even had to borrow members to fill up the old discovery as full as we could with people!
Another big highlight has to be x3 of our members competing at northern area and national as part of a ladies tug of war team where we again for the second year won at both. It really is such a contrast for the club but really does show where you can go within YFC.
Finally I would just like to say good luck to all the new officers and the club in the future.
COUNTY CHAIRMAN REPORT 2022 Michael Moralee
Good evening, ladies, Gentlemen and fellow young farmers. My second year as being Chairman for the federation has once again been a challenging one, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and it has been an honour.
The new year began with appointing a new Club development officer & admin assistant for the county. We had three applicants for the job, and we held interviews for the position in December. The lucky applicant was Jodie Harrison, who I’m sure will be well known to most of you in the room tonight and the start date was set for early in the new year.
The new year started well as Jodie began to try and get clubs back up and running efficiently after the pandemic. We held quiz rounds and our annual stock judging day in person which was great to see.
Everything was going so well and then disaster struck, Janice Baker, our county organiser informed the management committee that she wished to retire from the role. Janice had been in the role for 23 years and there wasn’t much she didn’t know about YFC. I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank Janice for her services and wish her a happy retirement.
The hunt for a new year county administrator began in March and we had several applicants for the position which was promising. Once again, we held interviews and in early April, we appointed a lady called Sam Dow. However, filling Janice’s position wasn’t the only problem we faced as we would also need a new county office. Members voted that they wanted to have an office and a shortlist of possible locations was drawn up. Darlington famers auction mart was one of these and this proved the most popular with members. The management committee worked hard to secure this with the mart, and it seemed like a new era for the county was about to begin. In the meantime, we held rally day for the first time since 2019 which was fantastic.
It was great to see members competing and giving anything a go as that is what YFC is all about. Northern area field day was next on the agenda at Darlington mart which was hosted by Yorkshire.
Michael Moralee continued:
It was great to see a lot of Durham members competing and there were some fantastic results for our small county. Our attention as a county then turned to NA Stockman as were hosting it this year. The day was a huge success, and everything ran smoothly. This was partly down to the hard work which went in beforehand by the committee chair Joanna Herbert and the rest of the committee, including Jodie and Sam.
Everything seemed to be on the up for our small county as we had over 280 members, two new members off staff who were settling in well and a new office at the new Darlington mart. However, in august I received a letter of resignation due to ill health from Sam, our recently appointed administrator. I would like to thank Sam for her services and wish her a speedy recovery. So once again we started to advertise for the role and received four applications. Jo Martin was the successful candidate and would start in the new office at Darlington mart in November.
I would like to thank my two vices, Katie and Joanna for their support this past year in what has been a difficult time for the federation. I would also like to thank the R&C officers for doing a great job in keeping competitions running for members and the F&O team for their efforts this past year. Thanks also must go to Angela and Diane for their support and hard work over the past year; they are always there to help and are invaluable to our federation. A big thank you goes to Jodie who has taken up a lot of the slack this past year and without her I don’t know where the county would have been. Finally, I would like to thank Keith Harrison for standing as our president this last year, in which has been a busy year for him.
I am honoured to have been your County Chairman for the past two years. It hasn’t always been easy or straight forward but as a team we have all pulled together and come out the other side stronger. I would like to wish Joanna the best of luck on becoming chairman for the forthcoming year, hopefully you won’t have to appoint as many new members of staff as I have! I would also like to wish Alex and Emma good luck on becoming vices to Joanna and Hazel taking on F&O chair. I’m sure you’ll all make a great team.
STAINDROP YFC 2022 James Bainbridge
This last year has been an honour to be the chairman of Staindrop and I have enjoyed every minute. As a club we are as strong as ever regarding members and your time will come to take over the reigns in the near future.
Looking back over the year at some of our achievements as a club this includes our junior tow team competing at northern area for the first time in many years, so well done to everyone who took part.
Other stand out achievements are Rachel Dent competing at national for TOW and winning and getting 2nd place in the National hockey finals too so well done. Josh Atkinson competing at the Yorkshire show sheep clipping all made possible from his success at young farmers rally day and northern area. Winston and Francesca came 3rd at county mock auction and Will Robson, Joe Teasdale and Winston did great at Northern Area Stockman so well done to you all.
This year was our first rally back after covid and a first for the majority of you all but coming second isn’t good enough for the size of our club so next year we need to push for the win.
The success of the clubs anniversary ball in March at the Morrit was great to see and money raised for the club funds was much needed so thankyou to Matthew and Alice for organising that.
I’d personally like to thank Joanna for helping me and always being there when I have a question and to you all thank you for coming and keeping the club running.
Daniel Martin continued:
Later in the year we changed our meeting schedule from weekly to fortnightly to allow for senior members workload during busy farming times, members where happy with that as it gave them a break during the school holidays.
Finally, towards the end of the membership year we had several meetings and events, but our main success arose from our participation at Sedgefield Show. This proved to be a great success for our small club, with us being presented with the aware for the best Trade stand at the Sedgefield Show 2022.
This year our club has grown from strength to strength with new and old members working together to promote Sedgefield YFC within our community. All events take time and dedication from all members, and I would like to thank all of them for the commitment to our club. I would like to wish all members the best of luck for the year ahead and hope that our club, Sedgefield YFC continues to grow.
FINANCE & ORGANISATION (F&O) REPORT 2021 - 2022 Helen Shaw & Emma Sanderson
I would like to start the Finance and Organisation report by saying thank you for allowing myself and Emma to be Chairs for the last four years. It has not been an easy four years having to deal with a Global Pandemic but this last year we have managed to run face to face events as normal.
Our 150-club fundraiser was successful last year so we decided to continue it again this year, we have done three draws and our final draw will take place in December. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket this year and last year.
Our Christmas Fayre at Sedgefield Parish Hall was our first face to face event that we held since COVID. We had great feedback and people liked the venue. We didn’t have the support from Young Farmers, it was the locals who supported it. We raised £581 which was £200 up on last time, this was due to more stalls, and we increased the entry fee from £1 to £2. We are running our Christmas fayre again this year on the 27[th] November at Sedgefield Parish Hall again, we have managed to book both rooms this year so this will give us more space for more stalls. We hope to see lots of you there not only supporting the County but also to support the local traders which we have attending.
We had the return of our well attended Christmas ball at the Morritt hotel. We did have some behavioural issues on the night however, it was a great to have everyone back together for the first ball in over two years. Despite the issues the ball made £2394.10 which was £402.60 up on 2019.The Christmas Ball this year is being held on Saturday 17[th] November at Bowburn Hall hotel, the tickets will be on sale very soon.
We had the return of our Raby Pleasure Ride this year, we used an online ticket system to sell our tickets, it was a lot easier, and no money was being handled on the day. We sold 253 ticket and had 238 people attend. We made a profit of £3444.54 from the day which was an increase of £1066.87 in the previous year. The Raby ride is booked in again for 7[th] May 2023.
Helen Shaw & Emma Sanderson continued:
It was great to finally have our rally and rally dance back this year hosted by Durham City. Rally Dance was not attended as well as what was expected, we sold 127 tickets with 78 being pre sold and 49 on the door. We did manage to make a profit of £3176.44
This year it was our turn to host Stockman, thank you to Joanna Stockman Chair and Emma stockman vice chair who worked really hard to source sponsorship to help to cover the costs of the day, with the mart also been very generous by letting us use the venue free of charge. We received great feedback from the day, with the mart been happy with how we left the site. We made a profit of £165.58.
We are in the process of organising our 90[th] Anniversary ball which will take place on Saturday 11[th] February at Hardwick Hall Hotel, tickets will be on sale soon. It will be great to see members past and present all coming together to celebrate 90 years of County Durham Young Farmers.
We would like to take this time to remind everyone that without the income from these fundraising events that we spend a lot of our time organising County would really struggle, so please as members, past members, future members, family and friends, support where you can.
Finally, Emma and I would like to wish Hazel the best of luck taking on F&O Chair in the forthcoming year.
SEDGEFIELD YFC 2022 Daniel Martin
Sedgefield YFC has had a good year. Members have enjoyed getting back to face to face meetings after a rough couple of years due to covid. We took part and had a stand in the County coffee morning at Sedgefield Parish Hall where we raised £46.50 In donations, which was a great way to start the year.
We then intended to have our annual carol singing service but unfortunately as cautions still arose from covid 19 we decided to cancel that event. This was unfortunate for the club as it is often one of the clubs’ biggest fundraisers. Going into the new year we were limited with our schedule of meetings. However, we picked up the schedule with planned events such as stock judging practices and county quiz nights.
Following on from these events we had a number of interclub meetings with Durham city YFC, which included Infinite Air and a visit to Acorn Dairies. In addition to these meetings we also had interclub with Elwick where we enjoyed rounders, Sandcastle building and lots of other meetings.
One of the highlights for the club this year was when our Junior member Ruby Heslop, won the best calf opposite sex to the champion at Hexham Mart. Well done, Ruby!
Later in the year we had a business meeting with our efficiency judges Mrs R. Lawson and Mrs A. Sanderson. They found that our meeting ran efficiently, and they awarded our current Chairperson Dan Lawson the award for best chair.
As a club we held numerous meetings throughout the Springtime to discuss, plan and finalise the different Competitions in which our members would compete in at the Rally Day, hosted by Durham City with thanks to the Laing Family. Following on from the success of Rally Day we had a social event where our club had a meal at the Dun Cow Inn Sedgefield. At this social event we held a small presentation for the members of the club who had been placed in different events at Rally Day. Well done to all!
Katie Sanderson continued:
From this, members had entries at Northern Area including the club display which came 4th, Charlotte’s Dream Programme that came 3rd as well as Lucy grouler.
As summer continued, so did our meetings. This was an incredible time for the club as we received so many enquiries about becoming members, mostly from juniors. We went on a walk and bike ride, went to the beach for ice cream… on the hottest day of the year (we must have been crazy), went to the park for interclub rounders with Sedgefield and saw the return of our annual Interclub Sandcastle Building at Seaton Carew. This again was a great evening which saw members from across the County come together and creating their sand creations.
Emma then competed in the National Floral Art Final at Malvern doing herself proud. So, as this draws to a close, congratulations to everyone who has taken part in anything YFC from coming to meetings, competing, helping to run social events and organising the programme.
It is with this dedication, determination and loyalty from the members, the club has had a successful year. What a year it has been for recruitment and wanting to get involved with every aspect the movement has to offer from making more friends, competing, socialising, community work, raising money for charity and creating many memories that will last a life time along the way is ultimately the icing on the cake.
RALLY & COMPETITIONS (R&C) REPORT 2021 - 2022 Alex McMenemy
Good evening ladies, gentlemen and fellow Young Farmers. It has been an absolute privilege to be Rally and Competitions Chair for the 2021/22 year - it has been thoroughly enjoyable. I was apprehensive about how YFC competitions would kickstart again after Covid, but the YFC spirit, enthusiasm and talent of our County Durham members prevailed once again!
The competitions year kicked off at the start of October 2021 with Live and Carcase Judging, kindly hosted by Robinsons of Wingate. The two evenings were well attended and it was really encouraging to see so many members giving stock judging a go for the first time and throwing themselves into it with great enthusiasm. As a result, we were able to send eight members to the NFYFC Live and Carcase Finals in Stafford in November, where Jessica Stewart and Thomas Watson won the A&H Williams Trophy for Senior YFC Carcase Judges of the Year for Senior Team, and Jessica Stewart achieved 2[nd] place for overall senior lamb live and carcase! In October and November, we also held our County Speaking and Sports Days with some great attendance and results – again, so encouraging to see so many younger members competing in speaking competitions for the first time and wanting to put so much effort into everything they do.
Moving into 2022, County Quiz rounds were held on the 26[th] January, 23[rd] February and 30[th] March, once again being well supported by clubs – especially Staindrop who fielded an incredible six junior teams! Huge congratulations to Staindrop A juniors and Barnard Castle A seniors on winning overall. On 13[th] February we held our County Stock Judging Day at Houghall College, which was also very well attended, with competitor numbers being comparable to the last time we were able to host the day in-person before Covid.
Northern Area Weekend seemed to come round very quickly on the 26[th] and 27[th] February hosted by Cumbria FYFC - it was absolutely amazing to have members entered in every single competition except Performing Arts, including attaining two teams for Show Choir and Cheerleading! Everyone’s hard work and preparation paid off in dividends, with the Show Choir and Ladies Rush Hockey teams both coming 1[st] , 1[st] places for After Dinner Speaking Chair and Proposer to Visitors, a 2[nd] place in Senior Member of the Year, 3[rd] place in Cheerleading and 4[th] places for Junior Ultimate Frisbee and Men’s Dodgeball. It was also fantastic
ELWICK YFC 2022 Katie Sanderson
Alex McMenemy continued:
Junior Ultimate Frisbee and Men’s Dodgeball. It was also fantastic to see a junior member achieve 3[rd] for Best Speaker in Junior Speaking – the first time they had competed in a Northern Area speaking competition! I hope all members that competed had a brilliant weekend and it was great to see the team spirit alive and well in County Durham. Our overall 2[nd] place as a county is quite an achievement considering the size of Northern Area!
On 7[th] April we held our County Mock Auction at Lloyd Ltd, Bishop Auckland – huge thanks must go to Chris Dobinson for being so accommodating and allowing us to come and use their machinery. Also in April at the NFYFC AGM, County Durham were presented with the Worshipful Company of Farmers trophy for the most successful small county competing at National Finals in the 2020/21 year – a true credit to the talent of our members! Butsfield YFC hosted County Dairy Judging on the 26[th] April by kind permission of the Bradley family, generously keeping us all fed and watered as well as providing a very informative and well-run evening. On 4[th] May, three teams competed in County Cookery at Elwick WI Hall. It was great to see this competition so well supported, especially with a very young team from Butsfield YFC attending and being so keen.
Rally Day was hosted by Durham City YFC this year by kind permission of the Laing family on the 21[st] May. It was a fantastic day, and huge thanks must go to Rally Chair Helen Shaw and the rest of Durham City YFC for all the hard work and effort put in behind the scenes that made the day such a success. Seeing everyone together again for the first inperson Rally Day in three years was quite emotional – and it was amazing for everyone to be back together again, having a laugh and coming away with lots of prize cards! Huge well done to Butsfield YFC for being overall Rally winners.
Northern Area Field Day followed in quick succession on the 25[th] June, hosted at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart by Yorkshire FYFC. So many County Durham members attended Field Day, with some fantastic results. Notably, our Ladies Tug of War and Farm Machinery Skills teams placing 1[st] and our Fence Erecting team placing 2[nd] , subsequently qualifying for National Finals. We also had members come away with prize cards for numerous other competitions, including stock judging, floral art, sheep shearing, and lots of exhibition classes. Following on from Jessica Stewart’s success at NFYFC Live and Carcase, she was invited to represent England in the Five Nationals Stock Judging Competition at the Royal Highland Show in June
Well here we are another year been and gone for Elwick YFC.
The year started with competitions and the Live and Carcase which saw Aaron, Lucy, Rebecca and Emma picking up prize cards. We were then given the opportunity to run the Pumpkin Patch Café at East Grange Pumpkin Picking thanks to Robinsons. This was a huge fundraiser for the club and we are extremely thankful to be given this opportunity.
Along came the County AGM with members bringing home silverware for the Senior Quiz Team and Katie taking Best Individual Senior Quiz scorer as well as being part of the winning After Dinner Speaking team. Emma won the Floral Art Trophy.
The club then continued to work hard over the next few months ensuring meetings still ran within the COVID guidelines, enjoying pizza making, a craft night making lampshades and memo boards, ice skating, pie and pea quiz and bowling with Cambo YFC from Northumberland. We were then able to get back into the YFC Christmas spirit as we managed to do Carol Singing, raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance. Members certainly got into the Christmas spirit in true YFC style with the return of the Christmas Ball at the Morritt Hotel. The night was enjoyed by all, catching up with friends and dancing the night away.
Then New Year soon came by with the three rounds of the quiz getting underway and Elwick having two Senior teams compete in this. Northern Area Weekend arrived which saw Emma and Katie competing. Katie was part of the After Dinner Speaking team where she won the Chairman element. Emma competed in the Show Choir as part of the County team and came an incredible 1st place and qualify for the National final which took place in July with the team coming 6th.
This then brought us to the countdown to Rally Day. Although there was only a handful of us there (literally) we gave every possible competition ago – it didn’t help we were all seniors although we tried to pass for juniors, shame it didn’t work. Prior to the day we worked extremely hard as a club on the club display which resulted in us winning and heading to Northern Area. The club did well throughout the day picking up prize cards and trophies. Emma won Best Treasurer and the Flower Arranging Trophy, Katie won Best Secretary and the club won Most Efficient Club.
Helen Shaw continued:
We are proud of every member who has had a go- and we have had fantastic results at county, northern area and national level! Some highlights include having 6 Durham City members represent County Durham in the National Live and Carcase competition at the English Winter Fair last year. At County, we have had some fab results for the quiz and county stockjudging. At Northern Area, we had members in the cheerleading, junior public speaking, brainstrust, show choir and after dinner speaking teams, with the show choir going on to Nationals. We have had members compete in junior frisbee, mens football and ladies hockey, with the girls hockey team coming an incredible second at nationals. With County Durham hosting Northern Area Stockman this year, it was great to see Durham City members being part of County’s team. We also had lots of entries winning at rally, and competing at the Northern Area Field Day. A massive well done to Lewis, who was part of the Farm Safety Skills team, and Henry who was part of the fence erecting team, both of which won nationals this summer! There are also members of the winning tug of war team from Durham City, who have helped County Durham keep the title for another year! More recently, congratulations go to Sarah, Sarah and Harry, who came third in Nationals cookery, with the theme being a celebration of our late Queen Elizabeth II.
We are excited for the year ahead to see what the future holds for Durham City YFC. Thank you to everyone for your continued support and for members for your dedication.
Alex McMenemy continued:
This was an amazing opportunity, allowing Jessica to learn how other Young Farmers Federations approach stock judging, and enabling her to meet lots of new people from other parts of the Young Farmers Movement.
July was a very busy month for our members following on from the successes we enjoyed at Northern Area. The 9[th] and 10[th] of July was NFYFC Competitions Weekend in Stafford, where our Ladies Rush Hockey team came an excellent 2[nd] place, showing that all of their hard work in training paid off. Our Show Choir came a respectable 6[th] place, with the judges commending the team on our inclusivity, with members aged between 12 and 28 taking part. To top the whole weekend off, our amazing Farm Machinery Skills and Fence Erecting teams both became National Champions, with Thomas Watson winning the award for Best ATV Handler in his section of Farm Machinery Skills! At the Great Yorkshire Show, NFYFC Sheep Shearing Finals were held on the Thursday, with Joshua Atkinson placing a fantastic 5[th] . The Friday saw the NFYFC Dairy Judging Finals take place, with our Junior Charlie Matthews achieving a fantastic 9[th] , Intermediate Katie Thompson coming 12[th] and Senior Matthew Bradley coming 14[th] .
2022 was County Durham’s turn to host Northern Area Stockman on 23[rd] July at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart. A huge thanks must go to Stockman Chair Joanna Herbert for all of her hard work, and to the mart, our judges, stewards, scorers and stock providers for ensuring the day was a huge success (and finishing ahead of schedule!). We had some great successes from our competing members as well, with lots of competitive placings from our Under 18 team from Staindrop YFC, the Under 28 team coming 3[rd] and County Durham placing 3[rd] overall.
On the 6[th] August, it was the chance for our Ladies Tug of War team to defend their title as National Champions from 2021. It was absolutely fantastic to see them maintain this, coming an incredible 1[st] place once again after lots of long training sessions and very hard work. It’s amazing to see County Durham Tug of War be put on the map at a national level. At Sedgefield Show on the 14[th] August, we hosted a Ready, Steady, Cook competition in the demonstration tent for the first time. It was very well attended, with three teams competing, championing local produce and producing delicious food, all while raising awareness of the Young Farmers movement. Huge thank you to all of our food suppliers and Jodie Harrison for organising the event, and to the fantastic Corrine Cooper for being such an excellent compere.
Alex McMenemy continued:
September saw the 2021/22 competing year draw to a close, but it was still incredibly busy for members competing in the final competitions of the year! Matthew Watson from Butsfield YFC travelled to NFYFC Stockman of the Year on the 3[rd] and 4[th] September, coming a fantastic 12[th] place despite some extremely tough competition. Malvern Show hosted NFYFC Cookery and Floral Art Finals on the 24[th] and 25[th] of September, with our Cookery Team from Durham City YFC achieving a fantastic 3[rd] place – even more impressive when two of the team are junior members! Emma Sanderson from Elwick YFC then competed in the NFYFC Floral Art finals, creating a beautiful arrangement and ending the competitions year on a high.
Overall, we have had an extremely busy but rewarding year of competitions as a county – and I have been immeasurably proud of each and every member that has given things a go in the last year. You, the members, make County Durham Young Farmers so special and this year has been nothing short of incredible.
However, none of this could be possible without the continued support of all our judges, stewards, trainers, supporters and parents who ensure that members are given the very best opportunities in County Durham – I can’t thank you all enough. Huge thanks must also go to my Vice R&C Chairs – Sarah Parsons and Jessica Stewart, and our Club Development Officer Jodie Harrison who have been a constant source of support and help throughout the year. Particularly with Janice’s retirement in April and the loss of her invaluable support, Jodie has gone above and beyond in her role this year to support us in our roles.
2021/22 has been such a rewarding year for County Durham, and I cannot wait to see what the 2022/23 year has in store!
Helen Shaw
After a successful 2020/2021, in this last year, 2021/2022, as a club we have pushed our horizons further. We decided to raise some funds for our club and we held a Spooky Do – thank you to Jon Taylor for his kindness in letting us use his venue. In the run up to Christmas, Jes and Sarah decided to set themselves the task of preparing sweets and decorations and attending a craft fair or ten to sell them. We also sold our calendars, again featuring member’s photography. This last year, we have also been a member of the Coop community fund, being one of the three causes in the Durham City area. I’m so excited to announce that, being part of the Coop community fund, £2,737.78 has been raised! As part of spreading the word about Durham City, this year we’ve also been involved in NFU question time at Darlington Mart, had a talk from RABI, and had many tours of different farms and businesses in the area.
As part of the growing of the club, we have recruited quite a few more members this year, with a massive 59 on the books. Many of these study at Houghall- it is nice to have established this link again- thank you to Houghall for hosting many of our meetings and to Iain for always waiting to lock up! We also have in the room the best student in agriculture from Houghall – congratulations Evan. A big thank you also for organising the junior takeover nights, which have been a lot of fun.
In National Young Farmer’s 90[th] year, many members attended the anniversary ball in Northumberland, and as part of further involvement in NFYFC, Alex has been in training to deliver curve modules, which we look forward to hearing more about. This year, we have also developed our link with Bellingham YFC, having more meetings, including ice skating at the Centre for Life.
Let’s not forget that we were Rally Hosts this year! A massive thank you to Helen, rally chairman, and the rest of the committee, who made the day run smoothly, and spent a long time organising it all. And, of course, none of it would have been possible without the assistance of East Grange farm- so thank you again to the Laing family for letting us host rally, as well as all of the other meetings you let us have like the sunflower walk, pumpkin carving and car treasure hunt.
Olivia Ford Senior continued:
From rally day we had a total of 19 members going forward to compete at Northern Area which was held by Yorkshire at the new Darlington Auction Mart. This was another successful day for these members representing County Durham. Two Butsfield members (Olivia Crozier and Holly Griffiths) were part of the tug of war team that won Northern Area
which was held by Yorkshire at the new Darlington Auction Mart. This was another successful day for these members representing County Durham. Two Butsfield members (Olivia Crozier and Holly Griffiths) were part of the tug of war team that won Northern Area and then went on to win the National finals for the second year in a row.
Our first Race night after the pandemic was one of the most successful, we had a great turnout. Thank you very much to all of the members and past members for helping organising, setting up, on the evening and clearing up. It was definitely a full club effort which was great to see.
Our second Christmas coffee morning took place on the 12[th] December, this was another successful event for the club. Lots of past & present members, family and friends of the club came along for a drink and a Christmas treat which had been made by members. We will be holding another one this year at Elsdon Lodge on the 11[th] December.
We had a great evening for our summer BBQ, it was well attended by members, past members, friends and family. On behalf of everyone in the club I would like to say a big thank you to the Smith family for hosting. Another well supported event was our Christmas meal last year which we held at The Brown Horse, it is always great to see so many supporters of our club.
After having 2 years with not a lot of young farmers this year has definitely shown us what it means to be a member of such a successful club. We have a great community here at Butsfield and I hope this continues in future years.

TREASURERS REPORT 2022 Angela Sanderson
Mister President, Mister Chairman and Young Farmers I would like to present the Treasurers report for the financial year 2021-2022. The F & O Committee have managed to organise a wide range of fund raising events due to the restrictions of covid being lifted.
The financial year started with the Christmas Fair and the Christmas Ball being held and both being very successful. The return of the Pleasure Ride at Raby Castle proved to be a great success being once again very well supported by the general public. The Rally Dance was also held again for the first time since 2019 and the 150 club continued to be successful. All of these events are essential to ensure the organisation has the resources to continue to operate at the level the members have come to expect so that is why it is so important that they are supported by all members of the county federation. A big thank you has to go to Emma and Helen for all their hard work they have both put into being F&O Chairs for the last four years and good luck to Hazel for the coming year.
The R&C Committee have run a full competitions programme throughout the year which has financial implication to the Federation but this allows members to flourish through healthy competition. The County held a very successful Northern Area Stockman competition and thanks must go to the Chair and Vice Chair Joanna and Emma for obtaining sponsorship and all the Committee for all their hard work to make sure that the day ran smoothly and ahead of schedule.
In January Jodie Harrison was appointed on a part time basis as a County Development Officer and Admin Assistant but little did we know at the time that we would also be looking for a new County organiser and office. When Janice decided after more than 20 years as our County Organiser to retire we new we had a hard job on our hands to replace her. After advertising twice we appointed Jo Martin as the new County Administrator. We also had to look for a new office and storage space. The office was found at Darlington Auction Mart and after renting storage space a container was purchased and thanks to Richard Gilson for allowing us to keep it at his farm free of charge.
The accounts for this last year show a loss of £5680. If anyone would like to see a full copy of the accounts, please contact myself. The loss has been mainly due to the fact that we paid rent part of the year for the old County office and part for the new County office. We also had to pay rent for the storage unit and the purchase of the container.
BUTSFIELD YFC 2022 Olivia Ford Senior
Angela Sanderson continued:
I would like to thank Jodie for all the extra work that she has done to help County since Janice retired. I would like to thank Michael for being an excellent Chair. I am sure if he had known there was going to be a global pandemic and that we would have to appoint a new County Organiser in his two years he might have changed his mind.
Thanks has to go to Emma and Helen for organising all the fund raising events that County have held over the last year and to all the County officers for their hard work to keep expenditure under control and to make sure that events and fund raising activities have been successful.
Here is to a successful year for County Durham. The last couple of years have financially been difficult for the County and Clubs but with the continued help and support of all members past and present I am sure the County will continue to go from strength to strength as we celebrate our 90[th] anniversary.

What a year for Butsfield Young Farmers Club!
It was great to be able to welcome everyone in person to Elsdon Lodge last year for our AGM after having virtual meetings throughout the COVID pandemic and we were all looking forward to getting stuck into meetings in person and competing again.
The club welcomed lots of new junior members at the start of the young farmer’s year and all of these have been getting involved with everything from organising meetings, rally day, stock judging as well as many other competitions.
Thank you to our programme secretary, Kate Tomlinson for organising lots of great meetings, these included visits to farms & the new Darlington auction mart, pottery painting, ice skating, trampolining and rally preparation.
Rally 2022 was hosted by Durham City at East Grange by kind permission of the Laing Family. This was an excellent day for Butsfield. As lots of our new members had never been to a rally day before they were unsure of what to expect but this did not stop them from taking part. We had entries in nearly all of the classes, I think there was only 2 or 3 we did not enter. Lots of entries definitely paid off as we had lots of placings which included: First place in Farm Machinery Skills for Bryony, Thomas, Matthew B and Matthew W which they went on to win at Northern Area and at National. A big well done the team and thank you to Adam Steel for taking the time to help with the practices.

Following on from a year which could only be described as strange!
We kicked back off our Face-to-Face meetings and it was lovely to meet with our club members once again. It was great to see that COVID-19 hadn’t affect our membership intake as we had a large boost in members coming through in all ages.
This year's meetings have seen a great range of things enjoyed by our members. These being pumpkin carving, stock judging, messy games night, rally prep, mock auction practice and much more. It has been great to see our new and old members getting stuck in at all meetings and helping the club. Most notably would be our prep rally where the club came together to decorate a wheelbarrow in a reliant robin and making blunting and a poster to support the county sports. This year rally day was well attended by our club with lots of entries for the crafts and before the day competitions, as well as all members getting stuck into the sports and activities on the day. To top off this year rally we came away with four trophies for the quiz, sports and baking.
This year we were able to get back to some of our usual fundraisers it was lovely to get back out into the community and raising money. This year we were able to attend out local show, eggleston, were we had our stand with our usual games and fundraisers on, it was a lovely opportunity to speak with members past and present as well as raising awareness for the club. Thanks to our stand at the show, we were about to raise £140.52. This year we were able to host our annual car treasure hunt, inviting members from across the county as well as friends of the club, this was well attended, and we manged to raise £211.35. We have lots of new and exciting fundraisers lined up for next year as we turn 80 years old!
It has been another great year for Barney YFC, and it has been great to be back together once again. I would just like to say a Thank You to everyone who has supported Barney YFC this year! We are looking forward to our 80[th] year!
