## **FOREWORD 2021/22** 

It gives me great pleasure to present to you the Durham Association of Boys and Girls Clubs Annual Report for 2021/22. In this 89th year the Association continues to go from strength to strength and I'm sure you will find the report adequately reflects our success. 

I am writing this forward in the role of interim Chairperson as our permanent Chairman, David Orford is unable to continue in the post due to new work commitments. I know David was proud to lead the organisation and did so during one of the most difficult times in its history . We wish him well in his new role. 

Our new Chairperson will be Assistant Chief Constable Tonya Antonis. Tonya has a keen interest in sport and is passionate about providing opportunities for young people. She is looking forward to becoming involved in the work of the organisation. 

As we came through the pandemic our Executive Youth Officers, Alan Watson and Simon Healey along with our Corporate Support Officer Tina Townson, worked hard to ensure we were fully prepared to start delivering activities at the earliest opportunity, following the raising of COVID restrictions Their work has ensured we 

I am delighted to be invited to be the new Chairperson of the Durham Association of Boys and Girls Clubs.  Durham Constabulary are proud to support the Association, which has a long and proud tradition of enabling thousands of our young people to enjoy the sports they love. 

I have a keen interest in sport and have seen the amazing way it (sport) brings young people together and enables them to be the best they can be.

In addition I would like to recognise and pay tribute to all volunteers who work tirelessly in our affiliated clubs to ensure young people can access the activities available to them. Thank you for your support. 

Finally I would like to extend my thanks to our President Frank Nicholson for his ongoing commitment and valuable support to the Association.

## **TREASURER’S REPORT 2021/22** 

The Association’s financial position is detailed in the Financial Statements for the period ended 31 March 2022. 

This year the Association has reported an inyear profit of £219. This compares with a reported profit of £30,536 in the previous financial year (high due to the restrictions around Covid-19). The accounts have been prepared on a cash basis that recognises revenues and expenses at the time physical cash is actually received or paid out. 

The accounts show that in the last financial year income decreased from £85,415 in 20/21 to £63,396, a decrease of £22,019 (26%). The decrease in income is relative against the prior year’s successful Covid-19 bids and one significant benefactor providing multiple grants. [Pre pandemic grant income £69,882 19/20.] The Association took the decision for the third year running to waive the affiliation fees to show support to all our clubs at source and aid recovery after the pandemic. 

I would like to personally thank all contributors to the Charity, your valued contributions allow the Association to support the County Durham and surrounding area youth community. 



The Trustees of the Association continue to extend the delivery of opportunities for young people, this year following the pandemic, we have continued 

with some of the new activities brought onboard whilst also returning to our usual offering. 

Expenditure has increased from £54,880 in 20/21 to £63,177, an increase of £8,297 (15%). This is attributable to the removal of restriction on activities following the pandemic. The Association has delivered a significant part of the activities associated with the ring-fenced funds,  £16,185 remains ring-fenced for the delivery of activities in the future. 

The Association continues to modernise financial processes in order to ensure efficiency in the use of the Charity’s funds, maximising support to the local youth community.

## **DABGC VISION AND MISSION STATEMENTS** 

## **VISION** 

To be the best provider of sporting activities and events for young people in County Durham, South Tyne and Wear and Tees Valley. 

## **MISSION** 

To encourage and provide young people from clubs affiliated to the Durham Association of Boys and Girls Clubs, access to opportunities at Inter-Club, County, Regional, National and International level, so that they may increase their personal and social development skills, thus enabling them to fulfil their potential and become responsible citizens within their local community.

## **AIMS AND OBJECTIVES** 

1.    To foster and support the development of new clubs male, female and mixed in areas of need. 

2.    To support and develop existing clubs and their voluntary management. 

3.    To present opportunities to young people so they may take part in a wide range of activities to increase their personal and social development. 

4.    To promote and complement the work of UK Youth, NABGC and other partners throughout the Durham Association area. 

5.    To act as liaison between our National organisations and other partners with our affiliated clubs and also between government, local authorities, public bodies, trust funds and other external agencies concerned with youth provision. 

6.    To provide guidance, advice and support where requested to our individual clubs on areas of concern, such as financial or internal organisation matters. 

7.    To encourage and provide Inter-Club, County, Regional and National Sports and Creative Activities, Adventure Courses, Training, Development and International opportunities. 

8.    To provide for Leader, Management and Members Training. 

9.   To raise funds for the furtherance of the above objectives. 

10. To provide equality of access, inclusion and opportunity for all young people irrespective of race, culture, sex, religion or disability. 

11. To identify and promote good practice throughout the Association. 

12. To develop effective working partnerships with a wide range of organisations and agencies.

## **COUNTY CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS - 2021** 

We had an excellent turnout for our annual Cross - Country championships which were hosted by Birtley Athletic Club on a fine Sunday morning in October 2021. We are sincerely grateful to Ed Lown and Val Baxter from Birtley AC and their team of volunteers for making us so welcome and to James Colling for his technical support.

The DABGC Pool championships were held at Lambton Street Youth Centre in Sunderland on Tuesday 15th March 2022 and we are sincerely grateful to Kevin Howard and his staff for making us so welcome.  Some excellent Pool was played and everyone enjoyed the evening.

## **COUNTY TABLE - TENNIS COMPETITION - 2022** 

The DABGC County Table Tennis Competition was held at Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club on Sunday 19th June 2022 with a very good turnout. We would like to thank Ryan Morton and his team at Bishop Auckland TTC for the use of their splendid facility together with an excellent day of Table -Tennis.

## **NABGC NATIONAL TABLE-TENNIS FINALS - 2022** 

The NABGC National Table -Tennis Finals were held at Wragby in Lincolnshire on Saturday 9th July 2022. 

All competitors received a Certificate of Participation and Durham dominated with 5 National Champions together with 5 National Runners –up and 3 third place medals. This was a great day, being well supported and enjoyed by all young people, parents and coaches.

## **COUNTY TABLE-TENNIS PROJECT - 2021/22** 

The Association continued this project with some funding from Sport England to promote and encourage greater participation in Table-Tennis in local youth clubs. 

We teamed up with Brandon TTC who as members of our Association had the expertise to support this project. They were allocated three local youth clubs to share best practice with and to support the training of volunteers in clubs to gain a Table Tennis Coaching Award. Belle Vue Sports and Community Centre and Throston Youth Project at Hartlepool and DJ Evans Youth Club at Bowburn all benefitted, with the clubs fully appreciating the expert coaching given. 



## **THE BETTY WOODWARD YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2021/ 2022** 

We had many strong nominations for the Betty Woodward Award, which is presented on an annual basis to the Young Male and Female Person of the Year from within the affiliated clubs of the Association. The criterion is openended except that the young person must be a regular member of the club and aged between 16 years and 21 years. Award winners will be announced at our Celebration of Youth awards event on the 24th October 2022 at the Ramside Hall Hotel, Durham. 

## **WORLD FEDERATION OF YOUTH CLUBS** 

The Durham Association is affiliated to the National body - NABGC - who in turn is affiliated to the World Federation of Youth Clubs. We have been well represented at a range of virtual meetings and continue to exchange and share best practice with other youth organisations across the world. 




## **NABGC - STUBBERS ADVENTURE WEEKEND** 

On a very hot weekend in June 2022, Sacriston Youth and Community Project, Durham City Youth Project and the Cheesy Waffles Project from this association made the long trip down to the Stubbers Adventure Centre in Essex and enjoyed a fabulous time.  They participated in a range of land and water activities and came away exhausted but happy having thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and made new friends from around the country. Quotes from young people and club leaders stated: “On the way home from an action packed weekend which was full of activities from start to finish. We teamed up with another club and our young people have made memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. Thanks to DABGC for supporting this wonderful opportunity” 

## **DABGC WELLBEING PROJECTS - WEARDALE ADVENTURE CENTRE - ACTIVITY DAYS** 

Following on from a highly successful 2021 where the Adventure Activity Days provided a launch pad for young people to socialise and mix together again following the pandemic, 2022 saw DABGC secure some further funding to continue these fun packed days. Each day again proved very popular with all at full capacity with a mixture of clubs attending - **General Youth Clubs, Boxing Clubs, Football Clubs, Athletic Clubs , Table-Tennis Clubs, General Community Groups and Centres and an All Girls Group** . They all gained a wonderful experience in Rock Climbing, Canoeing, Archery, and Raft Building or on the High Ropes course. The Activity Days provided the physical and mental support many young people needed in a fun and secure outdoor environment putting smiles back on young people’s faces. Comments from one group stated: “Fantastic day for our young people doing something different to their normal activity. Thanks DABGC for putting on an excellent day” 




## **NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS** 

The Durham Association is an integral part of the National Association (NABGC) by being involved in the National activities and events programme and also influencing and supporting programme development. A series of virtual and face to face meetings throughout the year kept the Durham Association informed. These meetings are vital in that by influencing the composition of the National programme more opportunities become available for our young people here in Durham. 

## **CORONAVIRUS 2021/22** 


Continuing from March 2020 into 2022 the coronavirus pandemic and local restrictions had a tremendous impact on the youth sector with clubs closed and many struggling to recover with staff and volunteer shortages and many young people taking time to re-establish a normal routine again. 

While DABGC continued to offer the county programme under tight controls the National programme took a very cautious approach putting on hold many of its National events and activities with the following events cancelled.

- American Experience 

- NABGC National Conference 

- National Cross  Country 





## **OCEAN YOUTH TRUST SAILING RESIDENTIAL - 2022** 

Back on the programme following a 2 year break due to the pandemic, the original Sailing Residential Week was this year split into two weekend events. This meant that double the number of young people were given the opportunity to access this unique experience. Dates scheduled for June 2022 proved too early with Covid still persisting and it was not until September 2022 did our young people eventually take to the water. We held two wonderful weekends of sailing providing the young people with a new experience with them gaining new skills and friendships along the way. 

## **SURFING** 

Back for a second year, this recent addition to our programme proved extremely popular with 12 clubs having a fabulous session on the water. Our thanks go to Nick and his team at South Shields Surfing School for their great instruction. Clubs commented “Surfing at Shields- thanks to DABGC for the opportunity” and “Thanks to DABGC for funding and arranging this session which was thoroughly enjoyed by our members” 




## **DABGC KARTING CHALLENGE - GRAND PRIX 2022** 

Held at the prestigious circuit at Karting North East it attracted 10 clubs and a full complement of 35 drivers on the grid. Teams from each club competed against each other in a step towards producing the next Lewis Hamilton. Comments included “ Just wanted to pass on our thanks to DABGC for another fantastic night which was very well organised with the young people having an amazing night”

## **UK CLUB ATHLETICS NABGC CHAMPIONSHIPS - 2022** 

This was hosted by Durham in May at the Middlesbrough Sports Village. Thanks must go to James Colling OIC for organising his team of officials and other volunteers who assisted in making it a very successful day. A large turnout fully appreciated and cheered every race. Durham put in some fine performances with 48 individual National Champions and a clean sweep of trophies. Comments included ‘An excellent event which was well organised by DABGC with our athletes competing well and winning a few medals’.

## **SNORKLING** 

A new exciting event for our young people at South Shields, where clubs got a glimpse of our fascinating underwater world. Comments included “Had a brilliant day”. 


## **FIRST AID TRAINING - SAVE A LIFE PROJECT** 

The Association continued with its Save a Life Project and wishes to thank the County Durham Community Foundation for funding towards the delivery of First Aid training sessions during 2021/22.  This quality training was delivered by Priory Training following the easing of Covid restrictions. 

In April 2022 we added Junior First Aid training to our programme which was very successful. We also continued to hold several Boxing First Aid training sessions, tutored by Kevin Howard from Lambton Street Youth & Community Hub which proved very popular. 

All these sessions have contributed to our ‘Save a Life’ project where a vital part of the training includes Defibrillator awareness.  The Executive Officers are equipped with a defibrillator in each of their vehicles so that every event the Association offers is covered for any first aid eventuality. The Association offers this essential training free of charge to all our affiliated clubs, actively encouraging and promoting   this qualification. To date over 310 members have been trained.

## **ROYAL GARDEN PARTY** 

As part of achieving the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2021 it was very pleasing to receive an invitation to Buckingham Palace for a Garden Party in May 2022 to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee year. Alan Watson, our Executive Youth Officer and James Colling from our Executive Board enjoyed a special and memorable afternoon and were selected to speak with HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton about the work we do at DABGC. 


## **QUEENS PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATION - DURHAM CATHEDRAL - JUNE 2022** 

We were delighted to receive an invitation from Mrs Sue Snowdon, Her Majesty’s Lord - Lieutenant and the Chapter of Durham Cathedral to the Queens Platinum Jubilee 70th Anniversary, held at Durham Cathedral on Saturday 4th June 2022. This special service of celebration and thanksgiving provided a means of celebrating the many good causes and institutions associated with the Queen in County Durham which included DABGC. 




## **QUEENS PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATION - TREE PLANTING - AUGUST 2022** 

To commemorate the Queens Platinum Jubilee 70th Anniversary a Tree Planting ceremony took place at Clavering Youth Club / M.A.S.A.C Martial Arts Centre in partnership with DABGC, with the tree kindly donated by DAAC. 


## **IN MEMORY OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II - 1926 - 2022** 

With our grateful thanks for her many years of service and commitment from all the young people, volunteers and staff at Durham Association of Boys and Girls Clubs. 

The Queen was a great inspiration and has left a lasting legacy for future generations.

The Association was delighted to be invited to an event at Ushaw Historic House in March 2022 where DABGC won a High Sheriff Award for the tremendous work undertaken with our clubs during the pandemic. The funding received will contribute to our well-being programme for young people. 


## **DABGC - STAFF PROJECT** 

To support the staff team DABGC embarked on a project to engage two people in helping with our affiliations and promoting our events and activities on a casual basis. Both Julie Warren (Affiliations) and Lesley Foster (Events and Activities) have provided solid support to Tina, Simon and Alan during the year and their help has been very much appreciated. 




## **COMMONWEALTH GAMES - BIRMINGHAM 2022** 

The Durham Association can be extremely proud of our Commonwealth Games representatives in Birmingham in July and August this year. We were represented in Team England by Kieran McDonald (Sunderland ABC) who having competed in the World Championships in 2021 became European Silver medallist in the European Championships in Armenia in May 2022 and 


followed this up with an impressive Silver Medal in the Men’s Flyweight at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August 2022. Also James Colling DABGC Executive Board Member, was not only a top official at the 2022 World Athletic Championships in Oregon USA but also at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. In addition, Alan Bell our DABGC Athletics starter was also one of the top officials in Birmingham, while Richard Kilty from Middlesbrough Harriers was the athletic pundit on the BBC during the Games. 

## **UEFA EUROPEAN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS EURO 2022 - JULY 2022** 

Several of the victorious England squad selected for the Euro 2022 finals held in July have roots back in our region with Jill Scott (Ex Manchester City and Aston Villa/ Sunderland Harriers and Boldon CA) / Lucy Bronze (Manchester City) / Demi Stokes (Manchester City). What a fabulous achievement and an inspiration to all in how they conducted themselves both on and off the pitch.

From Hartlepool Headland ABC has come a very long way from her early days at the club and is now boxing on the international and world stage. Currently the World Female Middleweight Boxing Champion she recently contested all 4 World Female Middleweight belts. 

## **Birtley Athletic Club** 

Two young athletes from the club have gained international recognition in Cross-Country and Triathlon. Kate Waugh and Max Stapley are now regulars on the Super League Triathlon Series of events around the world where Kate is European Champion.

## **BEREAVEMENTS** 

Sadly we have to report the deaths of the following people who gave so much to the Durham Association in so many different ways. They will all be greatly missed. 

- **George Hedges QPM, B.E.M. DL** - Former Durham Constabulary Chief Constable, Chairman and Vice President of DABGC, a loyal supporter of the Association 

- **Alf Welsh** - Burn Road Harriers – aged 102 and a great supporter of the Association. 

- **Neil Rewcastle** - Instrumental in supporting our Clay Pigeon Shoot and fundraising for DABGC. 

- **John Dryden** - Main boxing coach at Wellington ABC, producing many fine boxers over several decades, who went onto international success. 

- **Michael Robinson** - Plains Farm ABC - A well respected member and boxing coach of the club. 

- **Alison Hopkins** - Birtley AC - Absolute asset to the club as a loyal and dedicated coach, fundraiser and committee member and gave great assistance at DABGC and NABGC National events. 

- **‘Seppie’** - Gateshead Redheugh 1957- A long standing member, volunteer and football coach. 

## **SIR BOB MURRAY CBE AWARD** 

This award to be presented on an annual basis is courtesy of Sir Bob Murray CBE. It is awarded to a young person who has shown a great attitude, commitment and motivation in supporting others and taken responsibility showing potential leadership qualities. The award winner will be announced at our Celebration of Youth awards event on the 24th October 2022 at the Ramside Hall Hotel, Durham. 




## **DAVE LUMLEY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD** 

This award is presented each year in honour of Dave Lumley who served as a volunteer with this association for over 60 years. 

The recipient of the award last year went to Ann Lillie from Sunderland Harriers for her tremendous dedication to the club and her reliable support at County and National events.

- A tireless and dedicated individual who has been instrumental in keeping the club going and has nurtured many athletes to national success. A very keen supporter of the Association he has managed several of our County Athletics and Cross - Country teams to numerous national titles and honours. 

- **Jill Scott MBE - for services to Women’s Football** 

- A real pioneer over the past 20 years to get the game recognised from grassroots to international level and culminating in winning the Women’s Euro 2022 final at Wembley. 

- **Joff Carroll OBE - Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales** 

As CEO he organised many International events which our young people from DABGC took part in and built up a friendly rivalry along the way. Our trips to Wales were always enjoyable and most often successful. 

- **Joanne Eden - DJ Evans YC** 

A very popular leader having devoted several decades to the club and developed it into a thriving community hub. 




- **Sarah McCluskey - Hartlepool Youth Project / DABGC Executive Board** Has served the young people of Hartlepool at club and town-wide level and makes a major contribution to the DABGC Executive Committee. 

- **Les Todd - Birtley AC / DABGC Executive Board** A dedicated volunteer at club level and a well-respected member of the DABGC Executive Committee. 

- **Paul Smith and John Weaver - Boldon CA** 

- Jointly for services to Girls Football. They were pioneers of the Women’s game at grassroots level and have produced a production line of outstanding talent, many who have gone on to International honours. 

## **J.J. GRIFFITHS AWARD** 

This year the trophy for taking part in most sporting events during the year was won by Oxhill Youth Club. 


## **APPLE PROJECT** 

Following our continued partnership which has been running for several years with Apple at the Metro Centre, we are extremely grateful to their team for providing DABGC staff and our range of member clubs, field trips, group training, guidance, advice and support. These projects and Field Trips continue to be available to all our affiliated clubs. 

## **ENVIRONMENTAL BEACH DAY - ROCK POOLING** 

This new addition to the programme provided clubs with an enjoyable day learning about the wild and wonderful fascinations of our shores and life in our rock pools on the award winning Sandhaven beach at South Shields. Comments included “Thanks to DABGC for a brilliant day”

## **HISTORY OF THE DURHAM ASSOCIATION OF BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS** 


**‘’DOWN THE BOYZIE’’ CELEBRATING 89 YEARS - 1933 TO 2022** 


- 1933 sees the birth of the **Durham Association of Boys Clubs** 

- 1998 sees the county change its name to the **Durham Association of Clubs for Young People** to fall in line with the change of the National organisation. 

- 2012 sees it change again this time to its current name of the **Durham Association of Boys and Girls Clubs** as the National organisation changes its name to Ambition. 

- In the early days the National Association of Boys Clubs had been around since 1925 and slowly throughout the country clubs for young boys were in the process of starting up. 

- In Durham the first annual report (1933-34) indicates that 7 clubs made up the association - St.Mary’s Boys Club – Gateshead / St. Joseph’s Boys Club- Sunderland / Chester-le-Street Boys Club / Consett Boys Club / Durham City Boys Club / South Church Boys Club and Silksworth Boys Club together with the Boys sections of the YMCA in different parts of the county. 

- Interestingly the President of the National Association at that time was H.R.H The Duke of Gloucester who has carried on the tradition throughout the last 80-90 years. 

- The main objectives were to - ‘focus on the value of organising useful occupation during the leisure hours of boys from 14-18 years of age’ They did this by - Encouraging the formation of clubs and work with existing clubs / to promote an interest in Boys Club work by building up contacts with statutory and other voluntary organisations / to recruit and arrange for training for leaders and helpers / to collect funds to administer activities. 




- Over 80 years, these original aims and objectives still hold true.  Yes, the age range may have slightly changed and girls are now involved (and have been with Durham since the 1950’s) but we still look to support the existing club network and encourage others to affiliate to us / work in partnership with others / support and deliver training and provide a wide ranging programme of events and activities. 

- Interestingly the first Treasurer of the Durham Association back in 1933 was Frank Nicholson whose family have given so much to the Association over the years and where Sir Paul and Lady Sarah Nicholson are current Honorary Life Presidents with Frank Nicholson our current President. 

- From these early beginnings the Durham Association grew to become a powerful force in competing and (more often) winning National Championships in a wide range of sporting activity. This tradition continues today with many young people competing for their club in county competition before being selected to represent the Association at regional / national or international events and coming home as National Champions. 

- Today our Club base has expanded to between 75-85 clubs embracing new activities along the way. Our geographical area still remains the old County Durham area incorporating South Tyne and Wear and the Tees Valley (basically from the Tyne to the Tees) and includes General Youth Clubs / Boxing Clubs / Football Clubs / Fire Cadets / Durham Agency Against Crime / Cleveland Youth Association /Athletic Clubs and others providing a wide mix of clubs from rural to inner-city. 

- All have one thing in common - that is to give 100% support to helping our young people become first class citizens as they progress into adulthood. 

- Having moved our county office in 2018, we are now well established in 2021 at our premises in Chester-le-Street. 

- Honoured by the Queen in 2021 with the Queens Award for Voluntary Service - the highest honour a voluntary organisation can achieve, equivalent to an MBE.

## **BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS UK** 

## **(Incorporating National Boys Club/National Girls Club–North East Group)** 

These organisations offer young men and women between the ages of 16 and 21 the opportunity to join a National Group in which they can further their personal development, give a voluntary service to the movement in the company of other members and enjoy new friendships based on shared experiences. 

The Club has developed into local groups, which offer their voluntary service to County Associations as well as carrying out projects at local Clubs.  The National Organisation offers members the opportunity to join others in nationally and internationally organised events. Belonging to Boys & Girls Clubs UK (NGC/NBC) is more than an honour; it acknowledges the young person’s capabilities and signifies their acceptance of responsibility within the Community. 

The North East Group, incorporating members in Northumberland and Durham has been in existence for several years and has again assisted the Executive Youth Officers with many events during the year and we are very grateful for their continued support.

## **WAYS OF GIVING TO SUPPORT THE WORK OF DURHAM ASSOCIATION OF BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS - REGISTERED CHARITY NUMBER 520920** 

## **COVENANTS** 

By entering into a Deed of Covenant either as an individual or as a company you can provide extra help at no cost to yourself – for every £1 you give under Deed of Covenant the Inland Revenue will contribute almost 30 pence extra.  Please help us in this way and let the taxman make your donation grow.  Higher rate taxpayers will also qualify for additional income tax relief. 

## **DIRECT DONATIONS  “GIFT AID”** 

Much of our need is urgent and requires cash that can be used directly and immediately. That’s the special value of a direct donation to DABGC. 

By companies - companies can now gain tax relief on single gifts. By individuals - single gifts are deductible against income tax for higher rate taxpayers and the Inland Revenue will refund almost 30p for every £1 contributed in this way.  Gift Aid donations need to be made in conjunction with a declaration Inland Revenue Form. 

## **SPONSORSHIP** 

The County Association organises many creative and sporting events and activities each year, which are a valued part of Club life.  Sponsorship of such an event can benefit a company or organisation in promotional terms, helping to further their marketing plans. 

## **GIFTS IN KIND** 

These can have a double value; they can supply urgent needs in Clubs and by association, gain publicity and enhancement of reputation from the donor.  In some case if the gift in kind is not appropriate for use by clubs the gifts can be auctioned and money raised for them. 

## **BEQUESTS** 

The work of the Clubs will be as important in the future as in the past.  So income from legacies and bequests continues to be of immense value to us.  For the correct form of words and information on the tax benefits please consult your solicitor when you are drawing up or altering your will.  Registered Charity No. 520920 

## **ADVERTISING** 

There are a number of opportunities for you to help local Clubs by taking advertisements in various publications and thereby subsidising and reducing the cost of such activities.  Our Annual Report and the programmes for our various fund raising events are just some of these publications. 

## **MATCHING DONATIONS** 

We are always grateful to benefactors who offer to match funds gathered by the Clubs. This is of great benefit as it serves as an incentive to the organisation. 




## **PAYROLL GIVING** 

Individual employees are now able to make unlimited donations to any charity of their choice from their pre-tax pay.  Thus, the employee need only give 78p for the charity to receive £1. If you are an employer or an employee whose company decides to get involved in payroll giving, please include DABGC on your list of named charities. 

## **TIME** 

People from all backgrounds and with different skills who give their time to Clubs partake in one of the most valuable and appreciated forms of giving.  If you are able and prepared to help with our urgent need in relation to the recruitment of additional volunteer workers and Management Committee Members for our affiliated Clubs please contact the Executive Youth Officers. 

Clubs are always looking for people to join their existing teams of voluntary leaders - men and women with genuine interest in the development of young people and a willingness to give up one or two evenings per week to help young people in their leisure time activities.  The following are some of the ways in which help is always required. 

## **MONEY RAISERS** 

All Clubs have to spend an increasing amount of time in raising money and most have special committees to organise functions such as dances, bingo and jumble sales.  All clubs urgently need people with the ability to organise these functions. 

## **SPECIALIST ACTIVITY LEADERS** 

What’s your hobby? Something energetic like football, quiet like stamp collecting or slightly out of the ordinary like silkscreen printing.  Whatever it is, you’ll find you enjoy it far more if you can pass on your skills and interest to young people and have the satisfaction of sharing your enthusiasm. 

## **VOLUNTEERS** 

Without the help of a large number of volunteers we would not exist.  You don’t need to be a specialist or a club helper – all you need is the willingness to help with the supervision of basic club activities - collecting subscriptions, staffing of the coffee bar or transporting club members to activities away from the club are a few of the tasks for which volunteers can greatly assist the Club Leader.Any offers of help should be addressed to your nearest Club or, alternatively write to:

## **OBJECTIVES OF THE CHARITY AND PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES** 

The charity’s objectives are to provide opportunities for boys, girls, young men and young women to ‐ develop their own abilities and potential in a safe and non threatening environment.  To develop spiritually, morally, culturally, mentally and physically, in preparation for life and adult responsibility. 

The charity’s principle activities have been in the area of providing administrative, organisational and financial support to the 76 clubs who form the Durham Association. Also in providing a range of sporting activities. 

The charity is managed by the Board of Trustees who delegates the day to day running of the activities to the Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer, supported by a part time Corporate Support Officer and two part time Executive Youth Officers. 

## **DEVELOPMENTS, ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS THIS YEAR** ‐ See Annual Report. 

## **FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS** 

To continue supporting clubs within our Association ensuring that club facilities are maintained to a good standard. To increase the sporting activities and event opportunities for young people. 

## **RESERVES POLICY** 

The charity aims to retain sufficient free reserves on hand to facilitate the ongoing administration of the organisation for at least a period of 12 months. At 31 March 2022 this would approximate to £63,000. At 31 March 2022, the free reserves were £85,711. 

## **FINANCIAL POSITION** 

The Association’s unspent reserves at 31 March 2022 were equivalent to approximately 16 months of normal operating expenditure, which the trustees consider to be adequate at this time. 

In addition the charity holds ringfenced funds to the value of £16,185 at 31 March 2022. The charity holds no property or finance on behalf of other charities or bodies.

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2022 set out on pages 5 to 7. 

## **RESPECT RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TRUSTEES AND THE EXAMINER** 

As the charity trustees you are responsible for the preparation of accounts; you consider that the audit requirements of section 43(2) of the Charities Act 2011 does not apply.  It is our responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 43(7)(b) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to our attention. 

## **BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT** 

As the Charity’s Trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners.  An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts prepared with those records.  It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters.  The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts. 

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S STATEMENT** 

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act.  In carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145 (5) (b) of the 2011 Act. 

I have completed my examination.  I have identified no matters of concern to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** 

## **Basis of accounting** 

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities.  In preparing the financial statements the charity follows best practice as laid down in the Statement of Recommended Practice (Accounting and Reporting by Charities). 

## **2. EMPLOYEES REMUNERATION** 

Total remuneration for the year amounted to £30,270. 

## **3. TRUSTEES REMUNERATION** 

No remuneration directly or indirectly out of the funds of the charity was paid or payable for the year to any trustee or to any connected persons. 

## **4. FUNDS AND FUND TRANSFERS** 

All of the Charity’s funds are considered by the Trustees to be unrestricted.  The Trustees have set aside funds as designated funds as follows: 

## **Ring ‐ Fenced General Fund** 

The Charity has ringfenced funds which relate to specific activities/events. 

## **Contingent Fund (previously reported as Building Fund)** 

There are no movements on the fund during the year.  The fund has been set up to provide as a contingency and reserve in the event of unforeseen circumstances that cannot be funded in year. There are no known commitments against this fund at the balance sheet date. 

## **Development Fund** 

The purpose of this fund is to promote new initiatives and to expand the services of the Association.  There are no movements on the fund during the year.

The Durham Association of Boys and Girls Club is constituted by Deed of Trust and is a registered charity, No. 520920.  Its address is at The Old Court House, Newcastle Road, Chester ‐ le ‐ Street, DH3 3UA.  The charity trustees during the year to 31 March 2022 were:
