About Us

Springwell Village Community Venue (SVCV) is a registered charity managed by a voluntary board of trustees. Established in 1965, SVCV is a long established, successful, well-run community association that provides a wide range of services, activities and a meeting space for people of all ages and abilities within the community.

We provide resources for activities, groups, entertainment, events and projects that bring people together and help them develop social networks and support. We inspire and promote learning, creativity and participation through a variety of weekly groups and events throughout the year.

SVCV is the hub of village life and creates an important venue for services to be delivered and we believe that by providing and facilitating services and activities from the venue, local people of all ages and backgrounds have the chance to both benefit individually from our work, and importantly, contribute to their community, in terms of geography, identity and interest.

Chair's Report

2022-2023 has been successful for us and would not have been possible without the talent and dedication of our trustees, small staff team, and our fantastic group of passionate volunteers. We feel incredibly fortunate and grateful for the continued support of our volunteers, ‘THANK YOU ALL!’ The dedication, selflessness, and hard work make a significant impact on the lives of others and the community as a whole, and we value each and every one. We are grateful for the time and effort put into making a positive difference and their kindness and generosity inspire us all to do more and be better. Volunteers are the the heart and soul of our organisation.

Our community café is the heart of the centre. We've introduced a new initiative, keeping the café open until 8pm on the first Thursday of each month, offering specials in addition to our regular menu. This extension of hours has resonated well with our patrons, contributing to yet another flourishing year.

In 2022, we embarked on an essential project to replace the aging roof covering, and no longer do we have buckets scattered around the building. We have also replaced the concertina door which connects the café and corridor, valuable additions made possible through a grant from Sunderland Council.

We are also grateful for the grants and donations that have bolstered our youth work provision and the future looks much brighter for our young people, thanks to the generosity and support we have received (see page 10) - prior to receiving grants, our young people had limited support, with volunteers stepping in to fill the gap in the hope that funding would be secured to set up provision with qualified youth workers.

Our annual Pantomime week was a huge success as always, and a huge thanks to everyone involved. The 1940's Weekend another brilliant event making the village welcoming to a great number of people and thanks must go to everyone involved in the planning and participation.

Special thanks are due to Marion, who has done an exceptional job as Treasurer, to Suzanne whose tireless efforts have secured funding for various projects and to Joanne for her invaluable support in many areas.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who continues to use and support our centre, helping to make it flourish.

Treasurer's Report

My second year as Treasurer has proven to be very interesting in so far as I have learned so much from Suzanne technically and have at last mastered the complicated techniques involved in the accounting procedures.

The Centre is doing remarkably well at the moment, we have secured various grants to help with project and core costs. We were thrilled to hear that we had been awarded a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund towards the Springwell Village 1940s Community Heritage Weekend - 2023 event.

We have had a great deal of financial support from Sunderland City Council this year for projects, equipment, holiday activities and not forgetting our new roof which was a blessing.

September 2022 saw the conclusion of a three-year grant award from the National Lottery Community Fund. This funding has been instrumental in our success, enabling us to achieve so much.

Many successful fundraising activities have been organised this year and the Community Café' is thriving, generating much needed income but the kitchen is in desperate need of a replacement and we hope to secure funding which will make an enormous difference to the daily running of the café and to the staff and volunteers.

Last but most certainly not least I would personally like to thank all the volunteers who work so hard to support the Centre they are indeed very much appreciated. My thanks too to Suzanne and Joanne for their support throughout the year and their hard work planning and setting up numerous events. All the grants we've received are due to their hard work and dedication. I sincerely hope we continue on this successful path and continue to thrive as a benefit to the whole community.

Community Café & Bar

The Cozy Café plays a vital role in bringing people together, fostering a sense of belonging, and creating a space for social interaction whilst contributing to the overall well-being of the village by providing a welcoming environment for residents to connect, share ideas, and build relationships.

It serves as a hub for various activities and events and this year we have held workshops, storytelling and book launches, information sessions of local interest, live music nights, and a number of celebrations.

Rachael Skeoch is a local young woman who has been coming to the venue since she was a child and we were very keen to support the launch of her children's book ‘The Bear and The Butterfly’ which is about friendship and confidence. The session was open to all and so many families attended the story discussion with questions and answers and enjoyed the self confidence activities.

In February 2023 we introduced our new ‘EAT Til 8’ which has proved more popular than we envisaged. On the first Thursday of each month, we open until 8pm and we offer free refills on tea and coffees, children eat for £1 with a full paying adult and there are special additions to the main menu.

We have people pre booking tables and we have been asked to do this weekly so it is something that may grow in the future.

There are a number of activities and events that have worked well alongside the café and these have all attracted more people, showcased the café and increased revenue. The introduction of pre-show menus proved popular and were an attraction to people who had tickets for Dracula Spectacular and the Rocky Horror Show, the success of these prompted us to offered a pre-show menu throughout Pantomime week.

We hope to secure funding support to replace the existing community café kitchen as a functional kitchen is crucial for future success and sustainability. The kitchen area has suffered a lot of wear and tear and is in desperate need of replacing to allow the café to operate more efficiently, enabling staff and volunteers to work more productively in a fit for purpose kitchen so we have everything crossed for a new kitchen next year.

The café has complimented many events this year and we have received some fantastic feedback. We have tried hard to link with the theme of events, making the food fun with children's meals, afternoon teas and menus.

Children & Young People Early Years - Under 5s

Support from the Prime Fund at the Community Foundation ended in February and it has been invaluable. It supported the role of Children's Activities Coordinator, enabling us to develop and grow our services and maintain low cost provision accommodating all members of the community. Many beneficiaries expressed their concern about the cost of living crisis and to help a little with finances, all sessions for under 5s were set at £2/family and to run alongside this a loyalty card scheme was introduced so every fifth session is free. These changes have been relished especially in the current financial climate. We are also grateful for funding support from The Albert Hunt Trust which helped to support younger parents.

Weekly sessions are supported by Melissa our Children's Activities Coordinator

LITTLE WONDERS — Under 5s Baby and Toddler Free Play Session

The introduction of a half hour singing and rhyme time at the end of sessions have proved popular. Children are encouraged to pick a song and sing together which is lovely and when a child hears their chosen song they get really excited. Melissa uses a large parachute and other interactive items which the children absolutely love and parents have commented how much they enjoy this additional time.

STAY & PLAY — Previously Bump To Baby

We have made a few changes to this session to accommodate parents, carers and children’s needs. We had been asked if older siblings could attend which we obviously said yes to but we realized that the group name ‘Bump to Baby’ suggested that toddlers were not welcome so we changed the name and added a small toddler area. With the addition of baby scales, we now offer the option to self –weigh your baby. The layout of the room for this session has been heavily though out to ensure a relaxing, stimulating yet calm environment for all and it has been noted that the effort put in and interaction and support from Melissa is invaluable.

TWIN-TASTIC — Twins and Multiple Birth Group

A lot of emphasis has been on providing a fun calm session for twin and multiple birth families. We have people travelling from over 15 mile away, as far as North Shields and Seaham to attend the group as there are very few groups in the area and parents tell us that they prefer our session for a few reasons; toys are clean, we make people feel welcome, very friendly group, accessible and affordable.

Multiple birth parents feel that they have a strong network within this group, discussion topics include cost of living crisis, childcare costs, understanding support needs, issues with siblings.

LET’S GO PLAY — Role Play Session

The development of our role play session has proved beneficial in many ways, supporting children’s development as role play helps them to understand about the world around them, sparks imagination, creative play and social interaction and skills development. We have developed the session to consist of ten different role play stations and a small baby sensory area, each one carefully planned and set up with coordinating dress up outfits.

BOUNCE & PLAY — Under 5s play session - Previously Baby Bugs

We developed Bounce & Play after the fantastic feedback we had in the Summer from the one-off sessions we ran. Feedback from the sessions helped with the development of this new Thursday morning session. Previously we ran Baby Bugs on a Thursday afternoon but numbers became very low and Melissa suggested that we change to a morning and utilize the soft play equipment and castle that we offer for weekend birthday party bookings. Since their introduction the sessions have been extremely popular and allow children to run off some steam and play away in a safe, fun environment. FUN 4 ALL — Under 5s fun session

This session has seen recent developments with a name change and changes to the layout of the session, catering for all. Messy Monsters was always a little hit and missy with attendees and this was due to the session being specifically messy play which is not for everyone. People who did attend regularly loved the session and got so much out of it but they did say that some of their friends found it their worst nightmare. It was ran successfully for a long while but when numbers dropped to below five per session, the decision to look at it in detail was favoured. So, after taking on board attendees feedback, reviewing session evaluations and speaking to parents and carers, careful planning took place with Melissa and the CDM. The session has been adapted to incorporate a little bit of everything from messy play to imaginative play and the time has changed which suits the majority. We immediately saw an increase of numbers with very positive feedback.

Springwell Village Community Venue

Children & Young People After School Clubs

MINI MONKEYS

The Mini Monkeys club is as popular as ever and the children who attend enjoy the variety on offer. At each session the staff ensure that there is a range of toys and activities available. The club runs term time and the children are always excited when the club re starts after a school holiday. We held the ever popular parties for the children, including a Christmas and end of year party, where we said goodbye to the children who were moving up to the Dynamite Club and welcoming the children starting reception.

The development of this session is ongoing to constantly adapt to the varying needs of the children. A programme plan is carefully thought out for each term to incorporate a healthy snack, team games, sports, creative learning activity,

projects, outings and celebration days. The introduction of make your own snack has been very popular and beneficial as it helps children to gain new skills whilst informally educating. Craft activities that are linked to social development, environment, health and wellbeing and also to community events.

YAP - Youth Active Project

This year has been extremely difficult and unfortunately after trying many avenues to secure the future of the project, the decision to end the project was taken. The junior youth session was saved as the trustees put plans in place and it was relaunched as The Dynamite Club.

The Senior youth session sadly ceased to run but finally after many months the news that funding along with donations had been secured was welcomed and we opened our doors again with two clubs, an intermediate club for 11-14s and a Senior club for 13+ in January 2023. We have since began working in partnership with Oxclose & District Young Peoples's Project. See reports below.

DYNAMITE CLUB — After School Club—Year 4—Year 6 years

This club is a stepping stone up from ‘Mini Monkeys’ and development is also ongoing dependent on the ever changing requirements of the children. There are a few children with specific needs who we support and we are sensitive to their needs.

Programme planning is in place with a wide variety of activities to engage all. Music and dance has been introduced with a disco corner and karaoke along and this was something that the group requested. Qualified youth workers deliver this session and work with small groups of children to plan activities and events and this has seen an increase in engagement in activities as it is the children’s choice

YOUTH IMPACT — Intermediate Youth Club — 11-14 years

This new club is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund— Awards For All Programme. The club runs alongside the Dynamite Club in a different room and gives staff the ability to steer children, too old for the Dynamite Club into ‘Youth Impact’. The name ’Youth Impact’ came from the young people attending the fist session and funding will has enabled us to support numerous children and young people. Sessions are free and include free food and drinks for all.

T.G.I.F. — Teen Youth Club 13+ years

T.G.I.F. stands for 'Thank God It's Friday' and the name was chosen by the young people. The club runs on a Friday evening and is extremely popular with young people from the local and surrounding area to access this much needed provision. The drop-in youth session is free and we provide food and drinks for all. Funding from a number of sources has enabled us to purchase equipment, offer outdoor activities, invite outside providers to deliver a variety of projects within sessions alongside youth workers.

Afternoon Tea Dance

Whether you're a seasoned dancer or just looking to have fun, our afternoon tea dance is all about coming together, making new friends, and enjoyment. The tea dance provides an opportunity for community members to put on their dancing shoes, socialise and connect with one another in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

Our talented dance tutors Jean and Caroline play a variety of classic and modern hits to get your toes tapping and we are grateful for their continued support. Many thanks to our

lovely volunteer Vicky who gives up her time each week to help and to Steph for providing a nice hot cuppa.

Ladybirds

Join us every other Wednesday in the community café area, where our lively social group gathers to share laughter and camaraderie. With a membership of 20 regulars, we extend a warm welcome to new faces eager to join us.

While we may not yet have the financial means to bring in speakers, we're optimistic about securing a grant next year to rekindle the delight of talks. Our group boasts a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, where animated conversations flow freely alongside a game of bingo. Plus, we ensure you never go without refreshments, as we provide tea and biscuits at each session. We also celebrate the seasons with fabulous tea parties featuring buffets and exciting, fun-filled activities. Come be a part of the fun!

Audrey Miller - Secretary

The Fell Men

We are a small group of men who meet on a Thursday evening for a sociable drink and catch up, alongside our volunteering mornings on Mondays and Fridays. We are still hanging in there and although numbers are few the quality is in abundance.

We have been involved in many voluntary projects this year, one of which was making props for The Rocky Horror Show which was great fun. The re-roofing of the building has made a huge difference to the insulation and weatherproofing so we now don’t have many of the problems of the past to contend with. The ongoing maintenance is a continual source of amusement in the variety and frequency and gives us a regular source of conversation on our Thursday night socials. Generally we seem to have survived most events without incident or harm to ourselves and the building so we look forward to another year of similar

If anyone would like to join in this frivolity we will be in the café area at 9pm every Thursday

Chatterbox

In the past twelve months, our Friday afternoon social group has experienced remarkable growth, to the point where some weeks, we find ourselves bursting at the seams. Member feedback underscores the profound significance of this group in their lives: it serves as a vital lifeline, offers excellent value for money, provides an enjoyable avenue to connect with new individuals, fosters the formation of enduring friendships, and offers a much-needed daytime social option, especially considering that most members prefer not to venture out in the evening.

Romero School of Dance

Hi everyone, from Romero School of Dance.

It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since the last AGM. We have had a very successful year and as always I am very grateful to have the wonderful support from everyone.

In October 2022 we went to the British Championships and we won 5 British titles. This is something we have worked very hard for over the years. It was a dream come true to finally win and win so many.

In November I welcomed my little girl Ivie Sofia who is doing really well and is now 9 months! So it was a busy end to 2022! We had our show in March which was a lovely evening and a great opportunity for some of our little ones to take to the stage for the first time. We won another British title in April and we received 2 nominations for the Le Classique de Danse awards to be held in Blackpool September 2023 but unfortunately I can’t attend as I’m getting married that day…our 6th attempt! 🤣

I have been nominated for two professional awards for professional Ballroom teacher award and professional Ballroom Competitive teacher award. The awards ceremony is on the 22nd of September 2023. Wish me luck!

Our numbers have dropped a little so my goal is to boost them back up again. I appreciate any help or support in doing that.

Wishing you all a wonderful year ahead, Lindsay x

Mini Divas

Mini Divas has been running in Springwell Village Community Venue for 16 years now and is still a great success. We run every Thursday from 4.15 - 5.15pm and the group is for children aged 5 years +

We perform for the venue every time we are asked and this year we loved being involved in Spring Fest where we had a fundraising stall as well as the group performing on stage. We also performed at the Christmas Fair and we sometimes perform for different companies.

In October we staged our annual two night show where parents, family and friends can see what the children have learnt throughout the year.

CURTAIN CALL

Curtain Call is a youth drama and singing group for children aged 8 years and above. They work towards putting on an annual production alongside performing at community events. So many skills are gained, confidences and self esteem are raised, talents nurtured and friendships are made.

In March we began rehearsals for Dracula Spectacular, a spooky fun show to be performed in October, as it seemed fitting to sit alongside other Halloween themed events within the venue. In the meantime we performed at the SVCV's Springfest entertaining the public attending the event which was great fun.

We were asked to perform at a local care home in Washington and we went along on a Sunday and entertained the elderly who thoroughly enjoyed the children's' singing and requested that we return again

Our big production of Dracula Spectacular was a huge success, with both nights sold out. The young people thoroughly enjoyed doing this show and are looking forward to the next production which is The Wizard of Oz. Many thanks to everyone who helped especially Phil Younger on lighting and Suzanne on sound. Phil designed and built most of the spectacular scenery which took hours of work and we are so grateful. Thanks to everyone who helped in the dressing rooms, backstage, curtains, makeup, it is all very much appreciated. A special thank you to Christine Urwin who played the music for us and attended every rehearsal, it was a really difficult musical score which she played to perfection. Amy was in charge of the choreography and she did a great job and her encouragement and vocal coaching brought out the amazing talents of the children and young people. Lastly thanks to everyone who supported us.

SENIOR DRAMA

The group were delighted to be able to perform the

pantomime ‘TREASURE ISLAND’ in February, 2023. The production was enjoyed by all involved and our audiences were enthusiastic in their praise of the production. The major headache with this pantomime was “how to create a wooden leg” for Long John Silver! However, by the fourth attempt I’m glad to say we eventually succeeded! A tremendous amount of work by all volunteers goes into producing a polished production and I am very proud of everyone in the team for their sacrifices and dedication in ensuring this was another success for SVCV annual pantomime.

I am pleased to say that some new members joined our group and performed with gusto. We had some new young dancers and chorus. Well done to all of the new members who performed in their first pantomime.

On a personal level and on behalf of our group, I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Suzanne, Joanne, Management Committee and ALL of the

volunteers who work so hard for the benefit of all groups but especially ours. Not all community settings have the advantage of being so well run and it is a credit to their care and determination that we have the privilege to have our group within this setting.

PAULINE CLARK - PRODUCER

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW

The journey to putting on "The Rocky Horror Show" was an absolute blast! It all started during a social evening where everyone's passion for this iconic show was discussed.

We knew we were diving into a global phenomenon, with fans from all over the world known for their wild audience participation, and the thought of bringing that kind of energy to our local production was electrifying! Of course, there were some licensing hurdles to jump over. We couldn't get the full script license, but that didn't stop us! I rolled up my sleeves and crafted a trimmed-down script that fit within the guidelines, and boy, did it work like magic.

Our production was a showstopper, and wouldn’t have been the same without the support and dedication of everyone. The cast and crew all helped to make the show the success it was and with everyone pulling together we had some fantastic props, scenery, costumes, sound and lighting and the superb live music from the band gave it the magic touch. I can’t thank Peter and the guys enough for learning the musical score and being patient with the cast as it certainly was not an easy production.

The cast didn't just step into their roles; they leaped headfirst into the whirlwind of their iconic characters. The dedication and enthusiasm they brought to the stage made every moment an unforgettable experience. The result? Two sold out nights of pure, unadulterated fun that we and our audience will cherish forever!

I am really proud of every single cast member, it was a pleasure working on this production which has been entirely different to anything I have been a part of and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hopefully we will repeat it biennially.

Sport & Fitness

Karate

I've been coaching at Springwell Village Community Venue for an 32 years! Our coaching sessions are all about the fun and are run entirely on a voluntary basis, catering to kids aged 5 and up, as well as adults who want to join in on the excitement.

We're all about keeping things affordable for families, so our sessions are a wallet-friendly £2 per person. During lockdown, our numbers may have dipped a bit, but we've had some superstar pupils who not only aced their grades but also moved up to the next level. We're hopeful about the future, and we can't wait to see our numbers increase as we gear up for a fantastic year ahead.

Fierce Dance

After almost 7 years of teaching Clubbercize at in Springwell Village, this is still one my favourite places to be. The people, the facilities and even the best black out curtains arounds. Although the cost of living crisis continues to hit everyone, having an impact on class numbers over the past 18 months, Suzanne and the team have been more supportive than anyone could ever ask for.

Keeping the ladies in and around the village dancing is vital for the wellbeing. We are about more than just exercise, we are a group of ladies (the occasional man) who utilise the time to get away from our daily lives. Community fitness works in all directions, supported and made enjoyable by the people who make happen.

Fi - Fierce Dance & Fitness

The Life Programme

I deliver a weekly over 50’s exercise class in Springwell Village Community Venue and it is with the support of the staff there that it continues to be a great success.

We have around 15-20 participants on a weekly basis which is an excellent number for any activity but particularly an over 50’s exercise class and it is in no small part due to the welcoming atmosphere and lovely space of the village hall that the class is so well attended.

The class and venue provide a space not only for participants to get some weekly exercise which benefits them physically but it’s an opportunity to meet up socially with peers and friends benefitting their mental health and preventing social isolation. Quite a few of the class stop for a drink and lunch afterwards and a catch up which is also another big plus.

The staff are always friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere in the community venue is brilliant. It’s such a lovely space to spend time in and I’m grateful to be a small part of the delivery team at Springwell Village Community Venue providing much needed activities and opportunities for local people to benefit their physical and mental health.

Little Kickers

We give your children a positive introduction to sport by teaching high quality football skills in a friendly, pressure-free environment.

There are two different classes tailored specifically to the needs of children between 18 months and three years of age and sessions combine football skills with important pre-school learning concepts such as colour and number recognition, sharing, following instructions and using imagination.

It’s the perfect way to ignite an enthusiasm for sport that will stay with them for life.

Sessions are on a Tuesday morning. For more information check out our website www.littlekickers.co.uk

GAP Group (Golden Age People)

Our vibrant group meet every Friday morning throughout the year, offering a warm and inviting space for those aged 55 and over. We're eager to extend our circle and welcome new members with open arms.

Our weekly gatherings are filled with engaging activities, thanks to the creative talents of three key members: Audrey Miller, Elaine Dodds, and Madge Banks. They curate an assortment of enjoyable craft projects that add a delightful touch to our sessions. When crafts take a backseat, we indulge in lively coffee mornings accompanied by fun Bingo.

Thanks to Linda Reay, we had the pleasure of a visit from Roxanna, a talented Ukrainian artist who showcased the art of glass painting. Our members took to the craft with enthusiasm, and Roxanna has generously offered to return to deliver more free sessions.

Thanks also to Linda Longworth who recently demonstrated how to craft charming cushions using a technique involving wallpaper samples. The results were stunning, with washable, stitched, and filled cushions that members proudly took home as mementos of their creative endeavours.

To keep our group thriving, and to help it flourish, next year we're actively seeking funding from Sunderland Council Community Chest. This will help us secure essential tutors and materials for our ever-enthusiastic members.

Our Christmas festivities were a smashing success, with a memorable meal at the Engine Room in Eighton Banks and a delightful Christmas lunch, complete with great entertainment, hosted here at Springwell Village Community Venue.

If you're looking to join a welcoming fun social group, you'll find a warm embrace waiting for you here. Rena Jonas - Secretary

Art Group

After losing members during the covid years things are starting to look up. In the last couple of months we have had both a new lady and an unrelated gentleman become members. They have settled in well and attend regularly. Just yesterday I had a phone call from a prospective new member and he is expected to join us next week.

For quite a while we have just painted in SCVC but as the training room was out of use a couple of weeks ago we took the opportunity to have a trip out to Spennymoor to visit the Town Hall Art Gallery which is a tribute to Norman Cornish and other local artists. We were also invited to visit the Museum of Mining so had a very interesting afternoon.

If there are any experienced, or beginner, artists working in any medium we would make them most welcome. We are not a class just a community group who paint together and help each other as needed. We are most grateful for the use of the room, Cozy Café etc. Thank you.

Sandra Taylor Art Classes

My classes have remained on a Wednesday afternoon, to accommodate Trevor my disabled learner and on a Thursday morning. I run them on a 5/6/7 week basis depending on the way the holidays fall. This flexible approach works for myself and learners alike as many look after children and help out family during the school breaks.

I have remained teaching Acrylics for now but am skilled in teaching most media so it means I can vary the classes if anyone wants to experiment with resources they already have.

The atmosphere in the classes remains relaxed and I offer anything from beginner step by step demonstrations to being there for advice, inspiration and direction for those who are more experienced.

Alongside learning and developing new skills, the classes also provide huge social benefits, they are part of a routine, meeting new people as well old friends.

Unfortunately I have recently lost a couple of regular members of the group, but I like to think that in their latter days they were part of our warm and welcoming art classes.

I recently had a new beginner who hadn’t painted before, I started a basic step by step painting with her and some other members of the group. She had been a bit nervous but said she had really enjoyed the class, and as someone who still has a busy part time job and granddaughter she felt it was teaching her to slow down and relax...if only for a couple of hours!

As a self employed artist and tutor I run my groups without any grants or financial help and Springwell Community Venue has afforded me to keep my classes going. It is a well used, well run centre which provides light and airy rooms great for painting in and a bustling café for refreshments.

I look forward to growing my classes and intend to run them on a Thursday morning and afternoon, this means I can still accommodate Trevor and his disability and take advantage of the café!

Community Events

Spring Fest

This new event drew in hundreds of people from the local community. It was a fantastic one-day event full of energy and excitement. The event was carefully planned to cater to all age groups and it was a colourful day of endless fun and creativity with a tattoo studio and graffiti wall, family friendly competitions, crafts, giant garden games, birds of prey, fun side shows, piñata, photo booth, science fun, tepees, dazzle glitter face and body painting to name but a few.

For the music lovers, there were live performances that had people dancing and singing along and the event showcased local young musicians and Mini Divas Dance group and Curtain Call youth drama performed on stage. There was a play area, side shows, candy floss, pizzas, cakes, sweets, as well as our café offering food and drinks. Our dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to ensure the day was a huge success and everyone had a fantastic fun time. Lasting memories with family and friends were made and the day strengthened community spirits. Many thanks to Sunderland Council Community Chest - Washington Area Committee for their support.

The community were invited to an all-day Jubilee Soiree to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We engaged with hundreds of people and the day consisted of fun, celebratory activities for all with a coffee morning, toddler’s prince and princess party, a Tea Dance and a children’s royal celebration. All activities were creative, imaginative, cultural, and innovative as well as fun and informative whilst appealing to individuals with varied abilities and interests. The activities were enjoyed by all, very memorable and were also educational and socially beneficial. We encouraged people to share family photographic memories of previous jubilee/royal celebrations with us and we had a lovely display for everyone to view and it was a huge talking point. New memories were created, people reminisced, and the project brought people together and strengthened the community spirit. All feedback was very positive, it was a perfect day.

Boutique & Beauty Night

In conjunction with The Ultimate Ladies Boutique, we organised a one day shopping and beauty event. Local traders, beauticians, therapists and florists came together to promote their products and services in a relaxed community environment. The community café and bar had a bespoke menu with offers and people shopped at their leisure and relaxed in the café with friends and family without the hustle and bustle of the high street.

Community Events 1940s Weekend

Springwell Village 1940s Weekend was a great opportunity to immerse the community in a nostalgic experience and celebrate the history and culture of that era. Here are some of the highlights that contributed to the event's success:

Music throughout the village transported people back in time and evoked the spirit of the 1940s. There were talented vocalists throughout the village at various venues; swing, big band, jazz, and other popular genres of that time, and their music created a lively and nostalgic atmosphere.

Having a variety of traders offering vintage items, memorabilia, clothing, and other artifacts allowed visitors to take home a piece of the experience and further immerse themselves in the era.

Living history displays and re-enactments at Bowes Railway Museum were an excellent way to bring the past to life. People dressed in authentic period costumes, portraying people from the 1940s, engaged with audiences and provided a deeper understanding of what life was like during that time.

Vintage cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles added a touch of authenticity to the event and people are often fascinated by classic vehicles and their designs, making them a popular attraction.

Attention to detail in recreating the ambiance of the 1940s through props, decorations, and signage enhanced the overall experience and helped visitors feel like they had stepped back in time.

Traditional 1940s food and drink options delighted attendees' taste buds and added another layer of authenticity to the event.

Interactive activities, workshops, fun dog show, animal experiences, competitions and games kept visitors engaged and entertained throughout the weekend.

Due to feedback from the previous year, we looked at ways to incorporate more for children and young people. We created a traditional Toy Town for toddlers and babies and a Kids Play Camp for all ages using wooden toys, camouflage tents etc. Designated areas were set up and they offered free play for all which was welcomed by parents and carers.

The success of the event relies on the support and active participation of the local community, enthusiastic volunteers, passionate organisers, and a strong sense of community spirit, which all help to make a significant difference. Overall, 2022 was hugely successful and a memorable experience for all, it is a chance to step back in time and appreciate the charm and history of the 1940s.

Christmas Fair

🎄 Our Christmas Fair proved successful with a sleigh-load of activities that left everyone feeling jolly and full of cheer. The community were entertained by the Mini Divas dance group, who dazzled with their moves, and the talented Curtain Call youth drama group took to the stage, bringing an incredible performance of favour extracts from west end musicals and Christmas favourites.

There was an array of unique vendors offering Christmas-themed products and gifts from handcrafted ornaments to one-of-a-kind local crafted trinkets.

And let's not forget the main man himself – Santa Claus! Santa's Grotto was a must to visit, with every slot fully booked. Children stepped into the magical world of Santa and his helpers, who seem to have an uncanny knowledge of every child's dreams and wishes. Each child received a special gift and the chance to capture the cherished moment in a photograph they'll treasure forever.

The success of our Christmas event is all thanks to our incredible community, whose support and involvement make this event a roaring success year after year and we look forward to seeing everyone there again next year 🎅🤶🎁🎊

Dine with Live Music Events

This year we have had a number of day and evening events and each one has been well attended and enjoyed by all. This year following on from the success of the Bistro nights, we held a Spanish and Italian night with food, music and a quiz. The authentic food was amazing thanks to Chef Kev and his crew of volunteers. Thanks to Joe Devaney and Peter Aitkin who performed acoustic sets for everyone, both evenings were full of laughter, fun and dancing. We offered two party days in December where the community were invited to enjoy a two-course Christmas meal followed by tea/coffee and a sweet mince pie. Entertainment was provided by Johnny Sax one day and Harper & The Watchmen, the other. Both days were totally sold out with incredible feedback. Huge thank you to everyone who helped prepare meals, set up tables, decorate the room etc etc etc, you are all stars

In March we held 'Come Dine & Dance With Us' the day after St. Patricks Day and we were lucky enough to have Fagan School of Dance perform which was such a treat. A two course meal with coffee/tea followed by fantastic vocalist Mark Allen who had everyone up dancing.

Seasonal Events

Throughout the year we have held a variety of smaller events and every one has been very busy and enjoyable for all attendees. During Easter we held a fun craft workshop for children and an Easter Bunny Ball which was an instant sell out. The Easter bunny was kept very busy getting her photograph taken and keeping children entertained.

At Halloween we hired 'Flash Comedy and Magic' who put on an amazing show with games, balloon modelling etc Boogie Wonderland, our Christmas children's party went well and was enjoyed by everyone.

We make a huge effort to make the events memorable with themed activities, food and drinks, decorations, party fun and music and the feedback we receive makes all the hard work truly worth it.

Marketing & Media

Our varied methods of engagement are; social media, website, posters, flyers and newspaper articles. We have continued to grow and develop our social media platforms and have found that Facebook works best for us.

Social Media

This year, we've embarked on our marketing journey, channelling our energy into social media with a focus on Facebook and Instagram. We have grown both our main page, our Children's and Young People's Facebook page and Springwell Village 1940s Weekend page, a dedicated hub for all the exciting activities and events specially tailored to their followers. There has been a lot of time spent ensuring our Facebook pages compliment and work together alongside the website but there is still work to be done.

There is a synergy between the two pages, as they support each other by sharing posts, effectively catapulting our reach. We've witnessed a growth in Facebook and Instagram likes and hope to strive to keep attracting new traffic and visitors to our pages.

Visual Marketing

In our quest for innovation and user engagement, we've embraced the power of visual storytelling and the blackboards that adorn our main corridor and café offer a permanent display of our weekly timetable and menu. No more leaflets left behind! Individuals can easily inquire about anything that sparks their interest, fostering genuine interactions and connections. Our outdoor blackboards promote more than just room hire opportunities, they also serve as a canvas to showcase upcoming community events.

The community café double sided acrylic stands are invaluable to marketing our events and they have reduced the need to advertise externally in many cases.

The continuation of seasonal and addition of themed event menus work very well. Alongside the themed event menus we have a very visual raffle which helps both financially and with marketing of events.

We have used visual advertising methods that are very eye catching and informative such as large hearts that were donated which we utilised to be effective especially to advertise one-off events.

Online Booking System

Our online Bookwhen page has enabled us to unleash a world of convenience for parents and carers to book children's activities, saying goodbye to the old-school hassle of taking payments and handling cash. With our online booking system, people breeze through the booking process and there are no more paperwork woes. Managing events has never been this smooth, we can easily set attendee limits, manage waiting lists, group bookings and create registers 🌟 https://bookwhen.com/svcv-children

# Your Words

Community feedback is incredibly important and special to us as it provides us with an invaluable insight into our performance and impact. Positive feedback can be incredibly encouraging for our charity staff and volunteers. It reinforces their dedication and hard work, knowing that their efforts are making a positive impact, and we are so grateful ... THANK YOU

Springwell Village Community Venue 🦔

This is a gem to have on your list for anyone with little ones in the Gateshead/Sunderland/Washington areas. Based in the lovely Springwell Village, @springwellvillagevenue is a community centre with SO much going on from baby groups, toddler groups to activities for teenagers. They have a weekly calendar of activities term time and in school holidays have so much more going on too.

So far this summer, we’ve been along to a hedgehog meet and greet where T learnt all about taking care of hedgehogs in the garden as well as getting to stroke one, the morning included crafts and finished with party games and dancing, and we’ve also been along to a great toddler club with a bouncy castle and toys (just £1 per family).

It’s worth following them on Instagram and Facebook to keep up to date with the activities going on and get involved, everything is really great value for money and we love it - so many friendly staff and happy to chat mums.

There’s also the Cosy Café in the venue which is always a nice treat, and again, is really, really good value. 🦔🍃🦔🍃🦔🍃
