Aston on Trent War Memorial Hall Chair’s Report

Thank you everyone for coming along tonight, I can’t quite believe another year has passed and we are here again.

I would like to start off tonight to acknowledge the sad passing of Dawn Garratt earlier this year, Dawn and her family have been involved in the hall for many, many years and we are eternally grateful for all their hard work and support to the Memorial Hall, we as a committee are looking into how we can commemorate Dawn and have a permanent fixture as a way of remembering her and thanking the whole family for their hard work over the years.

It has been another busy year, the website and booking system are working really well and the hall is pretty much full all week with regular bookings and busy at weekends with lots of parties. Thank you to Committee for giving up your time to ensure the hall is a wonderful space for everyone that uses it, I would also like to say a special thank you to Michelle Gascoigne our treasurer for all her hard work, behind the scenes and for keeping me on the straight and narrow when it comes to spending and to Jenny Valdinger for continuing to be our secretary.

I would also like to say thank you to everyone that hires the hall, especially our regular users, for keeping the hall clean and tidy and looking after it so well.

The Memorial Hall was remembered by one of our regular users in his will this year, we were gifted £2000 from Norman Commander’s Estate, so thank you to him and his family for remembering us and it is warming to know that his time at the Memorial hall meant so much to him.

Work and maintenance has continued over the past year, with new flooring in the New Hall, large screens being installed in both halls, a dishwasher, new steps leading from the Old Hall into the garden and an outside tap.

With all of these improvements to the hall and an increase in utility bills we as a committee made the difficult decision to increase the hourly rate for party bookings back in January 23 and we are also increasing the Regular users rent which will be implemented for September 23.

I am pleased to tell you that the Parish Council, Recreation in Aston and the Memorial Hall are currently working with each other to provide our village with a site manager. The collaboration between all three organisations has been recently ratified by the Parish Council and the job will soon be advertised for anyone that is interested in applying for the role. I am sure you will agree the hall would benefit hugely in the increase in cleaning and maintenance capabilities, I look forward to

keeping you all up to date over the coming months with this. Thank you to Lindsay Pilkington for having the vision for this and for getting the ball rolling.

The Memorial Hall remains the hub of our wonderful village and I am so pleased to be a small part of it, thanks for having me as chair and here’s to another busy year at our lovely Memorial Hall.

Best Wishes

Debbie Hoddinott
