WORKINGTON TOWN BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
CHAIRMANS REPORT YEAR ENDING 2022
SUMMARY
The constitutional remit of the Club is to help young people, especially but not exclusively through leisure time activities so to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society.
The Club has continued to deliver these aims during 2022 which has been the first full year of operations since the Covid pandemic. Although we have seen a reduced level of attendances compared to pre-covid, the Club looks forward to making improvements, and developing further to increase the reach and benefits to young people in the area.
The Club continues to operate out of the St Mary’s Church Young Wing. Open sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Juniors from 6-7pm and Seniors 7-8pm. These sessions are predominantly for younger children or those who do not wish to box competitively.
Monday/Wednesday/Friday sessions are reserved for the carded or development boxers. These are invite only, with the intention of anyone attending the Tues/Thurs sessions being moved into these sessions where required at the Coaches discretion.
REVIEW OF 2022
The Club has had a very successful year in delivering competitive boxing opportunities. This has included taking our own boxers to away boxing shows, organising sparring sessions at neighbouring clubs, and hosting our own Club boxing show in April 22.
Despite increased boxing activities, the overall attendance figures throughout the various sessions have continued to be lower than before the pandemic, with the Senior sessions being very poorly attended. The Club has not retained the Senior fitnessbased memberships it previously had.
MEMBERSHIPS
Memberships are welcomed from 6 years upwards. with any memberships outside of the range being offered on the primary basis of increasing revenue for The Club. Approximately 150 individuals attended sessions throughout the year. Of these, 47% attended less than 5 sessions in total and 10% attended over 50 sessions throughout the year.
VOLUNTEERS
Recruitment and availability of Coaching volunteers continues to be a key issue for the Club, particularly around the Tuesday/Thursday sessions. Various appeals for volunteers were made with some parents of attending children offering to help out on the Tues/Thurs Junior sessions. This solution has been welcomed; however, it is often
a short-term solution with the parent preferring to provide ad hoc support only rather than a full commitment to coaching.
DBS certificates are processed for all volunteers as a minimum. Progression to further training is offered.
Ideally, all coaching volunteers would hold an England Boxing qualification, however the process of recruiting and training a qualified England Boxing Coach can be costly and time consuming. The qualification course requires the volunteer to travel out of the County for 2 weekends and then complete the additional First aid and Safeguarding courses. This requires a high level of commitment from any prospective volunteers.
The Club has considered alternative training options such as the England Boxing endorsed ‘Boxing Leader’ course. This is a 1-day course that is seen as a precursor to the Level 1 qualification. The attendee does not have to have any prior Boxing knowledge or experience and can be undertaken by anyone over the age of 15 years of age. It is intended to teach the basics of coaching a session, which would be ideally suitable for the volunteers we need to take the Tuesday and Thursday sessions. Enquiries have been made with the Police Clubs of Great Britain (who deliver the course) with the intention of holding the course at our Club. Unfortunately, they have been unable to provide a facilitator to deliver the course. The Club will continue to pursue this option or look at other options such as the Boxing Activator course which is a fun/games based approach to boxing skills, or the BOX instructor course which is basically a boxing fitness type of qualification.
The Club currently has 6 qualified England Boxing Coaches that are registered on the England Boxing Vault. There are also a number of other volunteers who provide ad hoc support. This includes 1 volunteer who is ready to attend a Level 1 course when it can be arranged.
A number of courses were organised throughout the year and these included 2 x Level 2 England Boxing qualifications, and a further 3 x Level 1 qualifications. Unfortunately, the output from these courses was limited to 1 qualification pass.
ORGANISATION AND STRUCTURE OF THE CLUB
The Club has a Management Committee in place, who oversee the general running of the Club. Day to day management of the sessions is managed on an ad hoc basis. A request for coaching volunteer availability is sent out at the start of the week, and then the attending Coaches/Volunteers then take responsibility for the sessions they cover.
The Club has seen a general shift towards Coaches opting to cover either the carded sessions or the Junior/Senior Open sessions, with limited availability to work across both session groups.
Carded sessions are led by the Head Coach and are usually well supported in terms of coaching support. The open sessions however, are frequently impacted by a lack of available Coaching support, with regular instances of being unable to cover the minimum levels of
cover. Sessions are occasionally cancelled which results in lost income and reputational damage.
It is assumed that the Junior/Senior Open sessions should serve as a 'feeder' into the carded/development sessions, with members starting off in the open sessions and then moving up to the carded/development sessions if they wish to box competitively.
FORWARD LOOK
The Club will continue to promote and expand its membership base. We will also look to widen our inclusion policy in order to reach out to those in the community who may normally experience barriers in accessing the activities on offer.
Recruitment and availability of coaching volunteers continues to be a major issue for the Club. The Club needs to build an adequate pool of volunteers for the Tuesday/Thursday sessions.
