Chair’s Report 2023

At the end of 2021 we received a condition and greening report that had been done for the hall by a professional surveyor. Many potential improvements were pointed out including, repairs needed to the roof, proper insulation , inefficient heating , windows , doors and roof lights . We have been trying to fix each identified issue in a logical order. In terms of the new double-glazed windows and external doors we managed to get a grant from the Lottery Fund to pay most of the costs after a lot of effort from Steve Holliday which we thank him for. He also had to battle with the LDNP planners and listed buildings to get planning approval.

In addition after a long dialogue with United Utilities we also received 2 grants totalling £26,440.

Later on Steve will update everyone on the building improvements that have been done and what future plans we have.

In terms of the running of the hall we organise a committee meeting only when there is an important issue to discuss. Emails and phone calls keep the day to day business of the hall going. Many thanks to the committee for their efforts.

Our two main day to day outgoings are the annual insurance costs and the electric bill . Over the last few years we have reviewed all aspects of the insurance (other companies , brokers , upping the excess ) but there is nothing that can be done to reduce the annual cost further . Hopefully improvements to the fabric of the hall and more efficient heating will help to reduce our heating costs.

Our regular hall hirer’s are the National Trust, the Tuesday Art Group and a U3A Watercolour Group .

In terms of the hall being available for hire it is free every Monday, Wednesday morning’s , Friday’s , every evening and most weekends so please spread the word.

The Wednesday afternoon tea and chat sessions have continued to thrive under the leadership of Sylvia and Sreeni Darigala. Many thanks to them and to everyone else who has helped to make this a success.

Joe Saxton has continued to organise his own monthly Coffee events for which he makes a donation to the hall.

In terms of other events we have had the following:

  1. Quiz and fish and chips supper kindly organised by Graeme and Jane Sutton . Many thanks to everyone else who helped on the night.

  2. A Coronation celebration organised by Dorothy Fernandez. Thanks to Dorothy and everyone who helped.

  3. A Barbecue event organised by Ellen Barker. Thanks to all who helped especially David Horsburgh.

  4. A very well attended Carol Service organised in conjunction with Crosthwaite Church. Thanks to Ellen for making the mulled wine plus everyone who made mince pies. This year’s Carols will also be held in the hall on Tuesday 17th December.
