## Group Lead Volunteer Annual Report 2025

Hi everyone and welcome to another AGM and Annual Awards ceremony – my 17[th ] year leading the Group!

This will be my last year as GLV, I’m due to retire next year and feel it is time for someone else to take over. I’m not getting any younger and we need someone with more energy than I have at the helm.

We’ve come a long way since 2008 when I was appointed Group Scout Leader, and we’ve hit several milestones and achieved so much together as a Group. When I joined the Group as a Cub Leader in 2002, we had one Beaver Colony, one Cub Pack and a Scout Troop.

In 2008 we celebrated our 75[th] Anniversary, 2009 we were awarded the Presidents Prize for Best Scout Group in the District.

In 2010 we recorded our highest ever membership (to date) with 101 children and we celebrated opening a second Beaver Colony Ismay and welcomed the first girls to the Group in Cubs. We were awarded the District Reg Cook Trophy for Best Beaver Colony and the Blackwood Trophy for the Scout Troop who achieve the most ‘out’ in Scouting.

In 2011 with Cub numbers growing, we opened a second Cub Pack known as Reed Pack in recognition of our President Dave Reed. We oicially became the biggest Scout Group in West Wirral District in 2012.

In 2013 we celebrated our 80[th] anniversary, in 2014 we opened a second Scout Troop named Martin Troop after one of the Scout Group’s founding members.

In 2014 the Cub Packs jointly won the District Fitzpatrick Cup as Best Cub Packs in the District.

In 2015 one of our Scouts Dan attended the 23[rd] World Scout Jamboree in Japan.

In 2016 I stepped down as Akela after 14 years and Caro took over.

In 2018 we celebrated our 85th anniversary and we opened a 3[rd] Beaver Colony named Royden. Two of our Scouts Mat and Jamie were selected to attend the WSJ in the USA and Canada in 2019.

In 2019 our membership stood at 175 young people and around 40 adults, we were once again awarded the District Presidents Prize for Best Scout Group.

2020/21 were challenging years with the Covid-19 Pandemic and our Scout meetings continuing online with Zoom visitors and content and virtual visits all around the world and the UK. We managed to have our first ever International Trip to Disney and Paris and got back just in time before the first lockdown. It was a huge success with an enormous amount of work behind the scenes to pull it all together, but a great trip which everyone who attended enjoyed immensely.

In 2022 with 196 children and 32 adults in the Group. In January we opened our first Squirrel Drey Scouting named Hillbark Drey for 4 & 5- year-olds, demand was so great that the second opened in September named Harrock Drey. At the District AGM in May 2023, Hillbark and Harrock were jointly awarded the Squirrel Drey of the Year.

2023 our 90[th] Anniversary, but a very tough year for me and I wasn’t able to attend the AGM for the first time in 22 years. The Group however continued to grow with 233 young people on the Census and 36 Adult Leaders and 18 Young Leaders. We had our second trip to Disney and Paris, another huge success.

2024 another successful year still over 224 youth members 34 adult leaders and 14 Young Leaders.

2025 we still have over 200 young people, 29 adults and 14 Young Leaders, comprising nine Sections who meet each week, 2 Squirrel Dreys, 3 Beaver Colonies, 2 Cub Packs and 2 Scout Troops and our third International Trip to Disney and Paris.

I read all of my previous annual reports before I wrote this and found they are a great record of what we’ve done, what we’ve achieved and who helped along the way. A big part of my annual report is thanking the

Adult and Young Leaders who run the Group Section meetings each week.

I need to thank the teams; we need to thank them all for being special and supporting this Group and assisting me to run the Group.

The Leadership Team - Caro, Andy, Liz and Holly.

Team Leaders - Andrew, Andy, Caro, Paul, Phil, Jayne, Gregg, Holly.

Team Members - Jon, Iain, Jay, Chris, John, Laura G, Laura M, Emma B, Emma K, Jenny, Helen, Nia, Liz, Victoria, Rachel, Raych, Nadine, Elena, Clare, Craig

Admin Support – Vicky, Kimmy and Gaynor

Trustees – Ivan, Nigel, Helen, Wendy, Nick, Marlou, Mel, Alan, Phil, Andrew

Young Leaders - Ben, Ben, Elliot, Ella, Finlay, India, Finley, Sadie, Frankie, Ptolemy, Freya, Erin, Harriet, Jared, Tom, Gabby, Emily, Conrad.

In the last month I’ve had 3 adult leaders contact me to say they can’t continue in September for various reasons, family commitments, new work commitments, family health, not enough time……

So, we need more help, our youth membership has been pretty constant at between 200 and 233 children each year, but our adult support has reduced, we have more children but less adult volunteers than ever. Please consider joining us as a leader/volunteer so that we can continue to oer Scouting each week.

Volunteers are a special group of people and that’s because they do what it says on the tin and volunteer. They are busy people, they have families, careers, jobs, hobbies of their own. They face diicult, challenging times, unexpected illness, just the same as everyone else. However, as a group they are extraordinary, because as well as all the normal stu, they volunteer, they do this for the young people of our Scout Group and don’t get paid. Their only reward is the outcome, providing top quality Scouting for your children, week in week out. Providing skills for life, building independence, confidence and

resilience for your children and making this Group the special, amazing, successful Group that it is.

Thank you

Sue Flush - Group Lead Volunteer
