Chairman & Group Scout Leaders Report

Well, it’s been another strange year. Its now nearly two years since I had to write to you all advising that following Government advice, we were to cease meeting in person and to undertake online meetings via the Zoom platform. And here we are conducting our annual General Meeting via Zoom.

It looks like little has changed but believe me it has. In September we started off by meeting face to face, for the first time in months. Small steps were required and having made our headquarters Covid safe. We all returned to a regime of hand sanitising, social distancing and not sharing resources. We were one of the fist Wallasey Groups to implement outdoor meetings. A little investment and ingenuity saw the activity shelters being erected and put to good use.

All of our sections used the shelters and as we have our own grounds, we were able to offer a wide variety of games and activities. Towards the end of the year we even hosted part of the Wallasey Districts Christmas Extravaganza which saw Scouts from all Wallasey groups cooking pigs-in-blankets over open fires.

Then straight out of the blue came another lockdown. It was back to Zoom but this time we had the experience and we invited other groups to join us as we hired guest speakers, illustrators, and performers to keep us entertained. This took us through to Easter.

In the Spring the weather was good to us and although we had the shelters up we were able to resume outdoor meetings and to get our Young People back interacting with our leaders and each other.

I am so grateful to all our leaders, Young Leaders, and adult helpers who all rallied round to provide an exciting but safe set of activities for all to enjoy. I for one was buzzing at seeing the smiles on the faces of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts as we returned to a “new normal.” Even though parents were and still are not allowed past the gate, thank you all for your understanding and for following our rules to keep everyone safe. Fortunately, I don’t think that there have been too many rainy nights and we have tried our best to finish on time.

At our face to face AGM’s we traditionally award badges and other certificates so as our Young People and Adult Leaders can get the recognition that they deserve. This year was obviously different, and I am pleased to be able to report that Chief

Scouts Commendations for Exemplary Service to Scouting were awarded to Rachel, Keith, Matt & Gareth. Our Treasurer and my predecessor as Group Scout Leader received a well overdue Silver Acorn in recognition of his services to Scouting. This is one of the highest awards that can be given by our Chief Scout Bear Grylls. Oh, and by the way I got an Award of Merit for services to the Group.

May I take this opportunity to personally thank all our Leaders, Young Leaders and Executive Committee Members for helping me in keeping the Group functioning during this very difficult year. It’s not just what you see on a meeting night, it’s the phone calls, emails & Zoom meetings that go on behind the scenes. I would like to personally thank Laura for being my Zoom co-pilot during lockdown and for going that extra mile in tracking down resources and individuals to keep our on-line meetings popular and for helping me in interpreting the Covid rules as and when they changed.

Finally, if you aren’t already involved with the Group as an adult, whether it be in the form of becoming a leader, an adult helper or joining us on our committees then please give it some thought and get in touch.

There are only three of our leaders who have children in the Group. For the rest of us ours grew up and went on to further education or out into the big wide world taking their Scouting skills with them. We, however, remain grateful and fulfilled by what we and the Scouting movement has taught them. That’s probably why we are still here but we can always use more help and love to see new faces getting involved.

Let’s hope for a better year and possibly returning to some camping later in the year.

Yours in Scouting

Paul

Review of the year July 2020 to July 2021

Autumn Term 2020

In the autumn we were able to meet in small groups at our Headquarters and it was fabulous to get to see everyone in person again. We also continued to offer Zoom meetings, so all our young people had the opportunity to attend at least one session every week.

At the HQ our sessions included lots of fun, getting to know you type games and activities, tracking, codes and treasure hunts, and Communicator badge challenges.

Online we met the creatures from Sam’s Safari, wrote poetry with Conrad Burdekin, learnt about the Wye Valley alpacas, discovered what forensic science was and how to look for clues. We took part in brain teasers and compass games as well as enjoying time to chat. Skittleman entertained us with his magic, and we made lots of noise during a drumming evening.

Some of the 28[th] took part in the Wallasey District Christmas Extravaganza enjoying cake making in a mug, task master games, bingo, disco, quizzes, and crafts all from the comfort of our own homes.

Spring Term 2021

Our Spring term programme was delivered via Zoom with the Beavers and Cubs joining together whilst the Scouts met separately. We all joined up for some of our guest speaker evenings. We also joined up with our friends at the 33[rd] Wallasey for some of our meetings. Activity packs were produced so we could enjoy crafts for Chinese New Year and Easter. We learnt magic tricks and got very competitive playing bingo. Our map skills improved as we worked towards our Navigators badge. Mark Thompson the BBC star gazer kept us enthralled during an evening all about space and we followed it up with more activities towards the Space and Astronomer badges. The Canal & River Trust gave us some great tips about staying safe near water. Skittleman retuned with another fun filled show. Our highlight was a fabulous evening with the illustrator Liz Million. Even Kevin & Keeo managed some recognisable pictures!

Summer Term 2021

Hooray we are back meeting face to face again! This term it has been fabulous to be able to meet as full sections in person again. We have met outside using our outdoor shelter and been lucky with the weather. The Beavers have enjoyed an obstacle course, making and flying kites, being pirates and sailing home made boats, making and cooking pizzas on open fires, finding out about superheroes and making cards for Father’s Day. The Cubs completed their Gardeners badge, planting seeds and trees and learning about garden tools. They’ve have built towers out of cocktail sticks and marshmallows, built ballistas, and leant some knots and lashings. Following a night about the theory of fire lighting they built their own fires and enjoyed toasting marshmallows. We’ve been able to get out and about and had a quiz, scavenger hunt in Vale Park and practiced our tennis skills thanks to Thorndale Tennis Club. The Scouts have learnt some first aid, completed tasks towards their Astronomer badge, got active for their Athletes badge, built fires and worked as a team to construct a Di Vinci bridge.
