Guide Report

Silver Hill Report.

The Guide Hut was put into Trust for 2[nd] Gee Cross Guides Unit by the then Guide Leader – Molly Hibbert as she owned the land and building as well as two adjoining garages. Since that time the presiding Guide Leaders have become the Trustees. In 1983 the Guide Hut was not viable to operate as the costs were too high. The Unit moved to Hyde Chapel Sunday School in Gee Cross and the buildings were let out. As there had been a change in Leadership the District collected the rents. The building and land belongs to 2[nd] Gee Cross Guide Unit for the benefit of the unit. The present Leadership were informed of the ownership of the buildings and land, and as they were concerned with the costs of insurance and as the lessees had died or retired the state of the buildings was sadly beyond affordable repair, decided to sell the property. The original paperwork was missing as the Solicitor who had originally been involved had died, so it took some time for the land registry to confirm the ownership. The land has subsequently been sold and the proceeds banked and used for the benefit of the unit.

Guide Report

Covid19 and the subsequent lockdown stopped guiding activities for the majority of the year.

The Guides didn’t respond well to the idea of meeting on Zoom so the leaders decided not to attempt it, some parents said they were online for school work so that might be why they weren’t interested. Instead the leaders provided packs of handout activities and badge information so the Guides could enjoy them when they wanted to use them. Chocolates for Easter and Christmas were much appreciated. The Leaders also had a Facebook page where the girls and parents could keep up with information and news.

In July the Leaders arranged a night to meet up and see the girls in person.

In September the Unit was able to reopen, and though some of the older guides did not return so many of the Brownies were now eligible to join Guides the Unit is busy. It was good to return to so many activities with such enthusiasm. Church Parade at the end of September for Harvest Festival was very successful with the Guides supporting the new Brownies. November was busy with Remembrance Sunday, a joint Coffee Evening and Awards Night with Brownies which was popular with parents, and then Church Parade with the Guides and Brownies officiating at the First Sunday in Advent Service including the ‘True meaning of Christmas.’ In December the Christmas Tree Festival and Switching of the Lights kept the Guides hectic. They chose ‘Rocking around the Christmas Tree’ as their entry for the Festival. The girls also supported The Rotary’s annual Christmas sleigh collection, visiting most of the Gee Cross area on two nights. Throughout the autumn and winter programme the Guides have completed the ‘Express Myself’ theme achieving several badges.

One of the Young Leaders is now 18 and has begun her Adult Leadership Award.

Two Leaders achieved their 5 and 10 year Awards respectively.
