for the year ended **31 MARCH 2023** 

The Executive Committee presents its Report for the year ended 31 March 2023. The Members of the Executive Committee during the year and their appointing body, where appropriate, were:

## **OBJECTS, ORGANISATION AND ACTIVITIES** 

The Charity is established to enhance the community life of the inhabitants of Bramhall and the neighbourhood by providing communal facilities for recreation and leisure. 

The Charity is organised as an independent association of local residents with the Executive Committee comprising of elected and co-opted members. 

The Charity`s main activity is the provision of a Village Club as a permanent community facility. The various rooms of the club are available for hire in accordance with the standard hiring agreement and scale of charges adopted for the period. It is intended that the rental income will be used to meet part of the running costs of the club. The balance of the expenditure incurred will be met from membership subscriptions and donations. Rentals are reviewed each year and new charges take effect from September 1st. Members` subscriptions are reviewed annually with new rates effective from September 1st. 

## **REVIEW OF PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS** 

## **BRAMHALL ART SOCIETY** 

Bramhall Art Society continues to meet regularlyon Wednesday morningsat BVC currently with 44 members but unfortunately a few have been unable to attend due to health/family issues.  We currently maintain a  waiting list. 

Our exhibition in April 2022 was well attended with very favourable commentsand healthy sales of paintings. By offering a café over the 3 exhibition days, we were able to raise the sum of £420 which was donated to our then adopted charity-Beechwood Cancer Care Centre,Stockport. 

In May, we had a watercolour demo from Stephen Coates-a Sheffield based artist 

We arranged an outdoor painting day in Summer which had a low attendance due to bad weather. We invited several new prospective members to join our sessions on Wednesdays in July in order to give them a "taster" before fully committing to membership in September. 

Our AGM was in July, at which we decided to adopt a new charity for fundraising-Macmillan Cancer Care In September 2022, after having been invited to exhibit, we submitted 49 paintings to Jobling Gower (now known as Anthony Collins)-a large firm of solicitors in Macclesfield. The exhibition ran from September 2022 to January 2023. During the exhibition, many of our paintings were sold and an amount of £408 was raised from sales commissions which was donated to their adopted charity-Headway. This was so successful that we have been invited to exhibit again in 2024. 

We have continued to benefit from regular visits from our framers-Lynda and Tony Berresford- from Glossop In December, our members raised £160 for Macmillan Cancer Care instead of sending Christmas cards to each other. 

Our very successful Annual Christmas Lunch was held yet again at Bramhall Golf Club on Wednesday 14th December 2022 with over 30 members attending. 

Our weekly sessions in 2023 started off with a portrait drawing session with a live model. This was popular and well attended. 

Early in 2023 our busy planning continued towards our annual exhibition planned for 14th-16th April. Cheshire Life showed strong interest in featuring Bramhall Art Society in their April edition which added greatly to our exhibition promotions. The editor requested samples of paintings to be on display and ended up publishing 16 paintings in their 5 page article. This has also led to one of our membersDavid Steeden-being invited to produce a painting for Cheshire Life for their Coronation coverage of Chester City Centre. This has been given a full page in the May 2023 edition. 

We hope to maintain our membership numbersover the next year with a possible increase to 45.

## **THE BADMINTON SECTION** 

Sadly, the badminton section, after having had to withdraw its teams from the local league last year because of a lack of league players, continued to lose its social players as well. 

At the end of October 2022, a decision was accordingly made to disband the section after many years in existence. 

The section generously agreed to utilise its remaining funds by making   £850 donations to each of three worthy charities- namely Macmillan Cancer Care, Transplant Sports and Mind-Stockport and District. 

## **BRAMHALL & CHEADLE HULME BRIDGE CENTRE** 

Bramhall & Cheadle Hulme Bridge Centre is thriving. The centre continues to run three main duplicate bridge sessions each week at BVC. A fourth session-supervised play, started in June 2022, is doing well and in January 2023 all those players who were not already members of the club joined. In January 2023, the centre started a fifth session-a beginners' class, which is running in ten week "terms" A sixth session is held on alternate Wednesday eveningscomprising special competitions and seminars. One further duplicate evening session remains on-line and includes a number of members who do not come to BVC. 

In addition, three of our members are running further bridge sessions in the Rhodes Room. These sessions are not part of the centre but are of benefit to a number of our players, although they may be seen as competitor activities along with some other bridge sessions held downstairs at BVC. 

At present, the centre has 230 paid up members-the growth is a result of newcomers to the main sessions and the Thursday afternoon players taking up membership. 

The centre has made donations to BVC which have been used to purchase new curtains in the Rhodes Room and these have been well received by users of the room. The centre also now has a new projector that can be used for teaching along with the new screen recently installed New tablecloths and bridge equipment are also planned.

## **PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY** 

Season 2022-23 has been another good year for the Society. 

I am pleased to report that the Society continues to be in a healthy state. Unfortunately, costs, such as presenters and other expenses necessary for the running of the Society have increased and so we had to increase our meeting fee to cover outgoings. 

Membership from the previous year has dropped slightly to 55 members but we have had the addition of several more experienced photographers joining us from other clubs in the area.This number is around the maximum we can comfortably handle for club competitions and we moved from five to six competitions in order to enable us to manage the high level of competition entries without having to make other changes. 

We have followed some interesting themes throughout the season, all designed to improve our photography with more emphasis on the finished image. For example, we had a print demonstration from Permajet- a paper manufacturer, technical sessions demonstrating high speed photography, workshops to help us improve composition plus various members challenges, photo walks and presentations from experienced members. 

This year has seen success in photographic battles with our neighbouring clubs from Stockport and Stalybridge. For the first time since 2011, we won the Cheadle Alliance Shield, which Stalybridge had won for the past five years, coming top in all three rounds in  Print and Digital sections. 

We have also invested in a new projector stand (well overdue) and are using the new electric projector screen provided by BVC which is much bigger than our portable one- providing a larger and more detailed view of DPIs 

At the start of 2023, we moved to collecting meeting fees via card only-using SumUp. This has been very successful, making administration of finances much easier and so negating the need for cash. 

We have had some changes to the committee this year and one of our two causes for concern for the future is the difficulty in recruiting new committee members to replace those leaving. Our other concern is that the number of members attending each meeting has again dropped from 30 last year to average 26 this year. 

## **THE INDOOR BOWLING SECTION** 

We entered two teams in the Stockport Metro short mat bowling league 2022/23- one in division 2 and one in division 3 

The A team got off to a poor start as one of our better players has been having ongoing cancer treatment so this left us having to promote players from the B team. They did admirably well but they needed time to adjust to the higher standard of play. 

We also had a tragic bereavement in early January which further hit morale. On the upside, we introduced a new young player of 14 years of age along with another youngster playing with his father, both of whom coped very well in division 2. We somehow recovered the situation and managed to finish third in the division. The B team held top position in division 3 for several weeks and looked like getting promotion but they were sadly pipped at the post at the end.However, having failed to gain promotion, they did have a good cup run and got through to the semi-finals of the Mike Biggs trophy. 

The club's annual lunch was held at Turquoise in Bramhall. It was less formal than usual but was well attended and nonetheless enjoyed by all. 

Our members have now dispersed to their various crown green bowling clubs looking forward to some sunny days.

## **FINANCES** 

The attached Financial Statements show the current state of the club's finances which the Executive Committee considers to be satisfactory. 

The club increased both its rental income and membership income from last year and a rent restructure was carried out in November 2022 to standardise rents in the various rentable rooms. 

Maintenance costs were significantly higher than last year but the large increases in energy prices were indeed  mitigated by the installation of the solar panels last year. 

There were significant refurbishment costs during the year of £23k -mainly incurred on the upgrading of the downstairs ladies and gents washrooms. Despite this expenditure, the club still managed to a report a small surplus for the  year.

## **Independent Examiner`s Report to the Trustees** 

We report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 March 2023 which are set out on pages 3 to 5. 

## **Respective Responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The charity`s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under Section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 ( the Act )  and that an independent examination is needed. 

## It is our responsibility to : 

- (i) examine the accounts under section 144 of the Act; 

- (ii) follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act ; and 

- (iii) state whether particular matters have come to our attention. 

## **Basis of Independent Examiner`s Report** 

Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, we do not express an audit opinion on the accounts. 

## **Independent Examiner`s Statement** 

In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention : 

1. which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Act; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met: or 

2. to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
