The Executive Committee presents its Report for the year ended 31 March 2021. The Members of the Executive Committee during the year and their appointing body, where appropriate, were:

## **OBJECTS, ORGANISATION AND ACTIVITIES** 

The Charity is established to enhance the community life of the inhabitants of Bramhall and the neighbourhood by providing communal facilities for recreation and leisure. 

The Charity is organised as an independent association of local residents with the Executive Committee comprising of elected and co-opted members. 

The Charity`s main activity is the provision of a Village Club as a permanent community facility. The various rooms of the club are available for hire in accordance with the standard hiring agreement and scale of charges adopted for the period. It is intended that the rental income will be used to meet part of the running costs of the club. The balance of the expenditure incurred will be met from membership subscriptions and donations. Rentals are reviewed each year and new charges take effect from September 1st. Members` subscriptions are reviewed annually with new rates effective from September 1st. 

## **REVIEW OF PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS** 

## **BRAMHALL ART SOCIETY** 

The Art Society meets each Wednesday at the village club and we currently have a total of 48 members. We maintain a waiting list of people who would like to join us. However, due to the Corona virus pandemic, we have had to suspend admissions until further notice. 

In April 2020, during the first national lockdown, closure of the village club forced us to suspend our weekly meetings. We restarted on 2nd September with Covid-secure measures in place and with very limited numbers, but after only four weeks we were forced to close again. We have been unable to meet since the end of September. 

Our 53rd Annual Art Exhibition in April 2020, for which preparations were well advanced had to be cancelled.Planning for the exhibition normally starts at the beginning of January but this has not been possible, so for a second year running our exhibition has unfortunately been cancelled. 

On a positive note, members have continued painting during lockdown and have been able to keep in touch via social media. Everyone is keen to resume our meetings as soon as possible.

## **THE BADMINTON SECTION** 

Bramhall Badminton Section only managed to hold 3 club nights in the last year due to Covid-19. We are hoping to resume regular club nights on Sundays and Mondays by arrangement when we are permitted to return to play. 

All league matches were cancelled last season due to Covid-19. We are hoping to enter two teams in the Stockport and District Badminton League for the forthcoming season -The A team in the second division and the B team in the fourth division, subject to Covid-19 regulations. 

All club play, match play and tournaments were cancelled this season due to Covid-19. 

We are always happy to encourage new members to join our group. The beginners group, that we were trialling was up and running with regular sessions prior to closure. 

The section is looking forward to restarting when Covid-19 regulations permit. 

## **BRAMHALL & CHEADLE HULME BRIDGE CENTRE** 

Bridge was last played at Bramhall Village Club during the week of March 9th 2020 and, due to the Covid pandemic, all bridge clubs in England ceased playing face-to-face later that week. Unfortunately, due to Covid, no bridge was played at Bramhall Village Club during the year from 1st April 2020 to 31st March 2021. 

However, the bridge section has been active.The merger between Bramhall Village Bridge Club and Cheadle Hulme Bridge Club took place on August 4th 2020, when the tables,chairs,kitchen and bridge equipment from CHBC were moved to Bramhall Village Club. Prior to this,BVBC and CHBC each donated £5,000 towards the costs of refurbishments to the Rhodes Room, Committee Room and the new kitchen at BVC. 

Membership of the newly named Bramhall & Cheadle Hulme Bridge Centre is over 200 people, with more than half playing bridge on-line during the year. The Centre ran its first game on-line on August 4th 2020 and for most of the time after that ran games on 3 evenings each weekwith participation of up to 60 players each time. An on-line game for non-members was also held on Tuesday mornings. 

The Centre's interim committee has been meeting on a regular basis, to organise the on-line bridge and plan for the future at BVC. The bridge section will return to BVC for face-to-face bridge as soon as it is legal and safe to do so and will be taking up all the room bookings which have been confirmed for bridge activities.

## **PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY** 

The Photographic Section continues to operate successfully,despite the challenges of this year. 

In March 2020, the decision was taken to hold all our meetings via Zoom and this continues to date. Mainly members have adapted very well to the use of virtual technology. Although the image quality is limited, it has enabled us to continue with the majority of activities throughout the season. 

Membership remains steady at around 50 , with the loss of some members who either prefer to meet physically and work with prints(rather than digital images) or who do not wish to embrace the technology. 

We have gained 8 new members this year,primarily through an advertising campaign using Social Media and Community booklets. 

The 2020/21 season has continued to provide us with an interesting and varied programme, with 15 presenters scheduled throughout the season. One "bonus" (if that is the right word) of Covid-19 is our ability now to meet with renowned speakers from anywhere across the country or indeed the world, via Zoom. We have thus had the opportunity to receive presentations and advice from world famous photographers, which otherwise would have been cost-prohibitive. 

We also extended our season into the Summer, with specific competitions for members providing added interest during lockdown, which worked well and received a good response. 

Virtual meetings have also given us the chance to talk with other clubs and we held our first (but hopefully not last) inter-club competition outside of our Lancashire and Cheshire traditional area with Sidmouth and Reading Camera Clubs in August 2020. Although we did not win, we achieved a very creditable second against two very good clubs. 

The change of our meeting day to Wednesday has not so far had an adverse effect. We will see if this alters when meetings resume hopefully in September 2021. 

We do have a sense of optimism that restrictions will continue to be eased and we very much hope that we can start the 2021/22 season by meeting physically once again, odd though it may seem until we all get used to socialising again. 

## **THE INDOOR BOWLING SECTION** 

The Bowling section meets three times a week for short mat bowling and once a week for league matches. We have at present three teams competing in the Stockport Metro League. Due to Covid-19, we had to cancel the last two games of the 2019-20 season. We were instructed by the ESMBA that no social bowling should take place unless we had a "Safe Bowling Certificate" which meant that we had to be inspected by the league's Safeguarding Officer to make sure everything was in place for safe bowling. After  obtaining our certificate, the infection rate escalated and caused the closure of the Club. 

Due to the pandemic, the 2020-21 season was cancelled and therefore no bowling has taken place since March 2020. With the easing of restrictions, we surveyed our members with a view to resuming social bowling in June. We have received a good response so hopefully we can get back to bowling then. 

As for league bowling, we have not yet heard from Stockport Metro regarding the coming season but, due to the loss of some members during lockdown, we are not in a position to say how many teams we may have left to enter the league.We have heard of other teams struggling with loss of venues and members, so the league as we knew it could be a lot different.

## **FINANCES** 

The attached Financial Statements show the current state of the club's finances which the Executive Committee considers to be satisfactory. 

Although the club suffered a significant loss of rental income and members subscriptions during the closure of the club on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was able to claim some compensation by way of grant income and take advantage of the furlough scheme to control its wages. 

The club was also able to carry out refurbishments, mainly upstairs, costing £17k, towards the cost of which the Bridge Section kindly donated £10k

## **Independent Examiner`s Report to the Trustees** 

We report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 March 2021 which are set out on pages 3 to 5. 

## **Respective Responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The charity`s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under Section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 ( the Act )  and that an idependent examination is needed. 

## It is our responsibility to : 

- (i) examine the accounts under section 144 of the Act; 

- (ii) follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act ; and 

- (iii) state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of Independent Examiner`s Report** 

Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, we do not express an audit opinion on the accounts. 

## **Independent Examiner`s Statement** 

In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention : 

1. which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Act; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met: or 

2. to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
