ThetrusteeswhoarealsodirectorsofthecharityforthepurposesoftheCompaniesAct2006, present
theirreportwiththefinancialstatementsofthecharityfortheyearended31December2024. The
trusteeshaveadoptedtheprovisionsofAccountingandReportingbyCharities:Statement of
RecommendedPracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththe Financial
Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives and aims

TheCompany'sobjectivesasstipulatedintheMemorandumofAssociationwerecreatedin1987and were
slightly amended in 2023
"Forthepublicbenefittooperate,maintain,preserve,andpromoteUndercliffeCemeteryforallorany of
the following purposes:
1. The burial of the dead, including provision for ashes.
2. The provision of a community open space as a focus for local cooperation and pride
3. The advancement of education regarding local and national history

  The Industrial Revolution
  The ecology of the cemetery, including wildlife and flora.
  The architectural heritage and design of the cemetery
4.Thepreservation,protection,anddevelopmentoffeaturesofhistoricoreducationalinterest, including
the preservation of war graves and memorials to those who have suffered in conflict."

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

�Digitising the records

Thisextensiveprojectbeganin2021withtheaimofreplacingtheoldmicrofichesystembycompiling a
comprehensivedigitaldatabase.ThankstothekindcooperationoftheWestYorkshire(Bradford) Archives
Services,wehavebeenabletoimagetheBradfordCemeteryCompanyorderbooksatanimpressive rate
of approximately 1,000 pages per week.
Adedicatedteamoftenresearchersundertookthetaskoftranscribingthecontentoftheseimages into
spreadsheets.Eachtranscriptionwasthencarefullycross-checkedforaccuracybeforebeinguploaded into
the database.
TheentireUnconsecratedsectionofthecemetery-comprisingaround52,000entries-hasnowbeen fully
completed.Workondigitisingthe74,000recordsintheConsecratedsectioniswellunderway.Atthe end
of 2024, a total of 65,000 records had been imaged, with 48,000 successfully transcribed.
During2024alone,volunteerscontributedanestimated210hourstoimaging,andafurther3,200hours to
transcription.Thismonumentaleffortwouldnothavebeenpossiblewithouttheenthusiastic,diligent, and
persistentworkofthedigitisationteam.Theiruntiringdedicationdeservesthehighestpraiseand sincere
thanks.

Membership

MembershipoftheUndercliffeCemeteryCharityremainsatanannualfeeof£10.Membersreceive a
monthlyupdatecoveringmattersaffectingtheCemetery,itsVolunteers,andotherrelevanttopics, along
with a quarterly newsletter. These communications are primarily distributed using Mailchimp software.
Bytheendof2024,theCharityhad78Members,includingTrustees,Volunteers,Councillors,and Sponsors.
ThetotalincomefromMembers'subscriptionsduringtheyearwas£1854,whichincluded supplementary
donations and Gift Aid claimed via the Charities Aid Foundation.
Engagement with the Local Community.
TheCharitycontinuedtotakeacreativeandproactiveapproachtoengagingwiththelocal community
throughout2024.Amongthemostpopularinitiativeswereaseriesoffrequentthemedgeneraland private
speakerevents,aswellasbespokeguidedtours.Thesewerecomplementedbyhistorical projects
involvinglocalschools,withTrusteesvisitingschoolsandpupilsvisitingtheCemeteryaspart of
interactive educational experiences.
Majorpubliceventsprovedhighlysuccessful,withtheBradfordLiteratureFestivalandtheHeritage Open
Daytoursbothquicklysellingout.Inaddition,BradfordandShipleyColleges,alongwiththeUniversity of
Bradford, were involved in collaborative projects at the Cemetery.
ThemostwidelyattendedeventoftheyearwastheannualRemembranceDayService,which drew
significantpublicinterest.Over200childrenfromlocalschoolsattendedthesolemnoccasion,which was
presidedoverbytheDeanofBradford,theHMDeputyLieutenantforWestYorkshire,andtheLord Mayor
and Lady Mayoress of Bradford.
Arangeofthemedbespokeeventsalsotookplace,includingtalksdeliveredatvenuesbeyond the
Cemeterygrounds.TheseeventsgeneratedvaluableincomefortheCharityandhelpedextendits reach
across the broader community.
AparticularlysuccessfulinitiativewastheFlowerFestival,heldwithintheCemeterygrounds.This event
wasdesignedtoencouragegreatercommunityinvolvementandtowelcomemorechildrenand families
into the Cemetery space.
Meanwhile,asmallbutdedicatedteamofvolunteershasbeenresearching,writing,andproducing content
forthenewUndercliffeCemeteryTrail.Thistrailcomprises20interpretiveboardsthatshinealight on
theCemetery'srichheritage.IthighlightsindividualswhoplayedacentralroleintheWorstedopolis era,
aswellasQuakers,womenandSikhsoldiersintheFirstWorldWar,the2023YoungPoetLaureate winner,
pauperburials,sportingchampionswhoovercameadversity,andnotablemusicians,artists,and writers.
The trail also draws attention to the Cemetery's natural visitors, including red kites, foxes, and deer.

Volunteers

VolunteerscontinuetoplayavitalroleinthesuccessoftheCharity'swork.Theygavefreelyoftheir time
topromoteandleadtoursandgenerouslydonatedhomemadecakesandrefreshmentsforsale at
events-adding a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere to every occasion.
OurResearchVolunteershavemadeinvaluablecontributions,bothindividuallyandcollectively, by
expandingthebodyofknowledgeaboutUndercliffeCemeteryanddeliveringinsightful, well-researched
guided tours.
OngoingresearchandwritingeffortsconsistentlyenrichourunderstandingoftheCemetery'shistory, often
revealingfascinatingandunexpectedstories.Thisgrowingarchiveservesasavaluableresourcefor family
andlocalhistorians,academics,neighbourhoodschools,andanyonewithaninterestinBradford'srich and
diverse social heritage.
Inadditiontoresearch,volunteersserveasknowledgeableandpassionatetourguidesandsupport all
aspectsoftheCharity'sannualprogrammeofevents.Thesetoursandactivitiesareessentialsources of
income and outreach, requiring significant time, careful planning, and thoughtful execution.
Thededication,generosity,andexpertiseofourvolunteerscontinuetobethefoundationupon which
much of our public engagement and fundraising success is built.

Chair's Report for 2024

Revenuegeneratedfromnewplotsales,burials,ashesinterments,andrelatedservices contributed
significantlytotheCharity'sincomein2024.Theseactivitiesresultedinamodestsurpluscomparedto the
previous year, reflecting steady and responsible financial management.
OurGroundworkVolunteerscontinuedtodoexceptionalworkinmaintainingtheCemetery's appearance
andaccessibility.Theireffortsincludedsomeofthemostchallengingtasks-pruningtrees, removing
overgrownrhododendronbushes,andsprayinginvasivespecies-allofwhichareessentialtothe long-term
upkeepofthesite.TwoadditionalsectionsoftheCemeterywereidentifiedaspotentialburialareas and
arenowbeingpreparedforfutureburials,ensuringthesitecancontinuetoservethecommunityfor years
to come.
Ofcourse,thesearejustsomeexamplesofthemanyvitalroutineactivitiesandimprovements undertaken
byourdedicatedteam.Withthesupportofover50volunteersandourpart-timepaidRegistrar,a wide
rangeoftasks-bothvisibleandbehind-the-scenes-havebeencarriedoutcollectivelyand individually
throughout the year.
OnbehalfofmyselfandtheTrusteesoftheUndercliffeCemeteryCharity,Iwishtoexpressour deep
gratitudetoallwhocontributetheirtime,skills,andpassion.Together,wecontinuetopreserve, protect,
andenhanceoneofBradford'smostsignificantheritagesites,ensuringthatfuturegenerations can
experience and appreciate the legacy of our shared efforts.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Thecharityiscontrolledbyitsgoverningdocument,adeedoftrust,andconstitutesalimited company,
limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.
TheCompanywasincorporatedinEnglandandWalesonthe20thDecember1985asthe Bradford
(Undercliffe)CemeteryCompanyandwasrenamedTheUndercliffeCemeteryCharityonthe10th July
1991 to portray more accurately its charitable status. The Company is limited by guarantee and has no
share in issue and dividends are not payable.
TheTrusteesserveinavoluntarycapacityreceivingnoremunerationfortheirduties.Exceptasdetailed in
the report, no present or former Trustees, or Members had any beneficial interests requiring disclosure.
TheCharityhaspurchasedinsurancefortheTrusteesagainstliabilitiesinrelationtotheCharity. There
have not been any claims against this insurance nor are any anticipated.

Asthecharity'strusteesoftheCompany(andalsoitsdirectorsforthepurposesofcompanylaw)you are
responsibleforthepreparationoftheaccountsinaccordancewiththerequirementsoftheCompanies Act
2006 ('the 2006 Act').
HavingsatisfiedmyselfthattheaccountsoftheCompanyarenotrequiredtobeauditedunderPart16 of
the2006Actandareeligibleforindependentexamination,Ireportinrespectofmyexaminationof your
charity'saccountsascarriedoutunderSection145oftheCharitiesAct2011('the2011Act').In carrying

Ihavecompletedmyexamination.Iconfirmthatnomattershavecometomyattentioninconnection with
the examination giving me cause to believe:

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the financial statements

Thefinancialstatementsofthecharitablecompany,whichisapublicbenefitentityunderFRS 102,
havebeenpreparedinaccordancewiththeCharitiesSORP(FRS102)'AccountingandReporting by
Charities:StatementofRecommendedPracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccounts in
accordancewiththeFinancialReportingStandardapplicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland (FRS
102)(effective1January2019)',FinancialReportingStandard102'TheFinancialReporting Standard
applicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland'andtheCompaniesAct2006.Thefinancial statements
have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Income

AllincomeisrecognisedintheStatementofFinancialActivitiesoncethecharityhasentitlement to
the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure

Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructive obligation
committingthecharitytothatexpenditure,itisprobablethatatransferofeconomicbenefits will
berequiredinsettlementandtheamountoftheobligationcanbemeasuredreliably.Expenditure is
accountedforonanaccrualsbasisandhasbeenclassifiedunderheadingsthataggregateall cost

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.
