Annual Re rt 2024 2025 Actors. Worksho Youth Theatre. Chari 519685 Herewith the Annual Report of the Actors. Workshop Youth Theatre (The Workshop} for the period September 1" 2024to August 31st2025. Trustees Robert E. Lassey Brenda Hodgson Allan P. Naylor Matthew Grainger Mark R. Haigh Gareth Hunter Sinaan Kahn Paul Op3CiC Thoma5 C.A. Vickery Lottie Ward Lee Whitton James F. Wilson Chairman Secretary Treasurer Appointed 6th February 2025 Appointed 6 February 2025 The Workshop's objertives continue to be to advance the education of the public, and in particular young persons. in the Arts and to further the development of public appreciation and taste in the said Arts. Our secondary objectives are to use the Arts a5 means with which to build confidence in young people and to instil a sense of self-worth nd self-belief. During the period of this report. the Artors. Workshop Youth Theatre mounted the following productions.. 17th 21" September 2024- "Glengarry Glen Ross" by David Mamet 3rd_ 7 December 2024- e Ladykillers" by Graham Linehan 22nd_ 26, April 2025 - 15th_ 19th July 2025 - -A Servant to Two Masters" by Carlo Goldoni "The Misanthrope" by Moliere Our 2024125 Season saw a return to our full programme of productions for the first time since our 201912020 Season was truncated by the pandemic. It also saw the continuation of the tran51tion to a new era of The Workshop following the retirement of our Founder and Artistic Director, Mike Ward. during the previous Season. The success of this transition was evidenced not only by the completion of the full programme of four Youth Theatre productions but also in the significant increase in young members attending our classes and participating in productions.
We continued to utilise a rotation of volunteer Dirertors for our produrtions which had the added bonus for our young members as it offers a varied experience as each Director brings a different view on the theatre and Style of production. This allows us to present a much fuller education in the Arts to our young mernbers. We opened the Season with a production of David MameY5"Glengarry Glen Ross" in September. Mamet's writing style provided a great challenge for our young members as the dialogue often includes realistic talking beats as well a5 several complete non- sequiturs which removes any obvious cue5 to aid with line learning and qUireS a greater level of focus in order to keep the flow of the Play going and not lose the concentration of the audience. This was followed in December by a production of 'The Ladykillers" by Graham Linehan. This had originally been scheduled as the closing production for the previous Season, however this had to be postponed due to Mike Ward's health issues and subsequent retirement. The Play includes a lot of physical comedy which needed to be tightly choreographed and rehearsed by our young member5. We were also able to include several new members who joined during the rehearsal process in small roles as part of the group of old ladies to whom the criminals have to perform towards the middle of the show. A5 the show is so well known we were able to attract a large audience during the performance week, including many who were attendingThe Workshop for the first time. In April we mounted a produrtion of Carlo Goldoni's"A Servant to Two Masters". This evidenced the increased rnembership numbers we were experiencing over the period of thi5 report as we were able to produce a much larger cast production than other recent show5, thus opening up more options of Plays to stage with our Youth Theatre. The show has several very prop heavy sections, as well as typical 'near-miss" farce elements. which requires perfect timing in order to make work. This highlighted to our young members the need fortight choreography and concentration to work as a team in order to pull the show together. Our final production of the Season was"The Misanthrope" by Moliere. This was chosen in order to provide our members with the challenge of what might loosely be termed as "Theatrical language" as the Play is written in rhyming couplets and retains most of the dialogue as originally written in the 17th Century. Thi5 means that much of the dialogue may not be immediately recognisable and understandable to our members on first readin& and equally to an audience on first listenin& and so the cast need to be deeply engaged with the subtext and how body language is used when speaking in order to aid the audiences understanding of the Play. We also used this as a slight test in order to see if our young members may be able to handle a Shakespeare Play, as was at one time a staple of our output. Due to the success of the production it was decided to include a Shakespeare Play in the next Season's programme of productions.
Alongside our Season of productions. we continue to run our weekly classes in drama for young people aged 11-19. running concurrently with the local school term schedule. Rehearsals for productions are kept separate to classes in order to ensure any member who is not available or doe5 not wish to participate in a particular show is not excluded from the classes. In addition to our Youth Theatre's artistic output we continued to increase collaboration with local theatre companies to mount additional performances in our Theatre, both aiding us as a fundraising venture as well as the companies by providing a performance and rehearsal space. Having successfully linked up with Foot of the Barrel the previous season. we continued that partnership by hosting two more productions of theirs during the period of this report. This took the form of a slight double bill, as they produced John Godber's "Bouncer5" in October as part of the Halifax Comedy Festival. followed by "Shakers" in June. Between these productions we collaborated with another local touring company, Talking Stock, to stage the debut of their new Play "Deep is the Night" In addition to the production of "Bouncers" we also acted a5 a venue for other elements of the Halifax Comedy Festival, including a stand-up comedy night. Due to the success of these collaborations it was decided to continue pursuing this avenue as a mean5 to produce f urther opportunitie5 for the local community to experience the Arts in the cominE Sea50n. Our resident fundraising Role Playing Games group, "AFK" continued their weekly sessions throughout the course of the period of this report, raising funds via subs and a soft drinks "tuck shop" as well as a -24 hourf sponsored fundraiser. In addition to being a successful fundraising scheme. this group also aid5 in our secondary objectives of building confidence and self-belief as many of their members struggle with certain social situations and have issues with self-confidence. These weekly meetings enable us to offer support to individuals who would otherwise be unlikely to access our seice$ as they do not wish to be involved in the artistic element of our work. We continue to be grateful for the financial support of our 'Angels' private sponsors who donate through monthly or annual subscriptions. as well as to several supporters for additional "one-off, donations. During this period we were also grateful to receive a number of Grants from Trusts and Foundations including the Sir George Martin Trust and the Bramall Foundation.
