Structure, Governance, and Management

Brecon Singers is governed by its Constitution adopted on 10th February 1987 and amended on 7th July 1987 and further amended on 17th May 2017. Brecon Singers is managed day-today by a committee of volunteers who are the Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Publicity OfWicer, Patrons Secretary, and Librarian. The Musical Director (who is not a volunteer) is also a member of the committee. The committee meets regularly throughout the year, as required.

The volunteers are all unpaid and receive no private beneWits from the Brecon Singers. The volunteers are selected on the basis of the skills, knowledge, and experience needed for the effective administration of the Brecon Singers. The committee is elected annually at the Annual General Meeting.

Objectives and Activities

The objects of the charity are to educate the public in the art and science of music, and in particular choral works, by the presentation of concerts and other activities. Membership of the Brecon Singers is open to anyone interested in furthering its objects.

Brecon Singers is a community choir with a membership of around eighty singers, providing the community with an opportunity to sing together, and to learn about choral music. The choir gives a number of public concerts during the year.

Public BeneLit

Above and beyond its weekly rehearsals for the community, the choir gave two concerts, one in St Mary’s Church and one in the Cathedral in Brecon for the beneWit of the public, and also was the guest choir for the Brecon Choir Festival in July.

Volunteers

The trustees and management committee are all unpaid volunteers (with the exception of the Musical Director). A signiWicant proportion of the charity’s funding is also provided by Friends and Patrons and other fundraising activities by the volunteers.

Brecon Singers is very grateful for the support and help of its volunteers, and also its Friends and Patrons, who enable the charity to organise its main activities and therefore meet its objectives.

Achievements and Performance

Major achievements for the year were extremely well-attended and critically acclaimed concerts on 12th April performing Bach’s St John Passion, on 17th July performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah as the guest choir for the Brecon Choir Festival, and on 6th December performing Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols.

Brecon Singers has a scholarship programme, funding singing lessons for a young scholar throughout the year, and provided her with the opportunity to sing with the choir at rehearsals and to perform as a soloist in concerts.

Declaration

The trustees declare that they have approved the Trustees’ Report above.
