Additional governance issues (Optional information)

All Trustees, committee members and volunteers have to be screened and You may choose to include approved for an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) additional information, where accreditation. This procedure is conducted on our behalf by the Newcastle relevant, about: Hospitals NHS Trust Volunteer Service.  policies and procedures adopted for the induction and Our peer-support volunteers have been trained by the NHS and the training of trustees. National Kidney Federation for the role.

The TKPA carries a substantial General Liability Insurance.

The committee has been managed and operated within its Constitution and by-laws.

Like many small Charities we suffer from being unable to attract new Trustees or Volunteers. Our Trustees, Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary remain in post for three years before being replaced, this is part of our by-laws. All our Trustees have been in post between 1 to 11 years due to the lack of members wishing to contest the role. This required a change in our by-laws that Trustees will remain in post, should they wish until a suitable replacement declares themselves during our August selection process prior to our September Annual General Meeting.

To support all adult renal patients their families and carers based at the Freeman Hospital Newcastle Upon Tyne and its three satellite treatment centres. Raise awareness of kidney disease and renal health and support national campaigns. Be available in support of initiatives by Doctors, Surgeons and Nursing Staff such as World Kidney Day and the Annual Kidney Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM) Survey which runs for 8 weeks through September and November. The Tyneside KPA also holds Board Membership to the Northeast and North Cumbria Renal Network. Support ranges from Peer Support, Education, Bulletins and Website and most importantly financing our Welfare Fund that is used to help patients in financial need. Financial grants are awarded by our renal social workers to ensure confidentiality. As all our committee are themselves renal patients or family members, our motto is “Patients helping Patients”. Raised awareness of renal disease by having public events on World Kidney Day and National Transplant Week. Raising funds from charity stalls (yet to recommence after Covid restrictions), donations, and memorial donations. Organising and managing fund raising opportunities such as The Great North Run and Charity Golf Days. Having open, robust, and independently audited accounting procedures to ensure public trust. Provided help to our patients in finding assistance in relation to benefits and housing advice via our Renal Social Workers. Provided a “safety net” for those patients in financial need. Offered financial and practical advice to patients wishing to go on a family holiday whilst maintaining their dialysis treatment. Financially supporting the Patients Caravan in the Lake District. All patients based within the Newcastle Hospital Trusts renal service, currently 1600+ can access our help and funds regardless of whether they are members of the TKPA. Whilst the TKPA has free membership it is only used for mailing or emailing newsletters etc. There is no “Membership Card” and all renal patients are welcome to approach us and use our help

Providing free or subsidised Summer leisure days out to local venues such as museum visits and the like. Since Covid restrictions started in March 2020 we had no trips but July 2023 saw a return.

Christmas 2024 was a happy return to us personally distributing 500+ Christmas Gift Bags to Dialysis Patients. This included all our patients in the Freeman Hospitals Wards 31,32, Transplant Unit and our three satellite dialysis units.

The Committee continues to meet with senior medical staff every six months.

While we do not generally assist the Renal Unit with equipment purchases, we have bought blood pressure monitors. Medical staff have distributed these to patients to self-monitor their BP. This enables our Patients to be able to manage their health without travelling in the Hospital.

Some notable aspects and achievement by TKPA in 2024:

Financial Issues

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

The TKPA”s policy is to maintain at least 25% of our opening annual balance to go forward to the following financial year.

None.

Details of any funds materially in deficit

Our Accounts always remain in a substantial credit balance.

Further financial review details (Optional information)

Our Patients Welfare Fund is available to help those in financial need, this is managed directly by the Renal Social Workers.

This method ensures confidentiality with the Social Workers, referrals to them have come from medical staff and Committee Members. While not perfect this has ensured patients can still be assisted.

The Trustees meet with the Social Workers (via TEAMS) regularly to ensure they have sufficient access to funds and give us an overview on how effective the fund is in helping those in need.

The TKPA has no investments in any financial products. The Charities Audited Accounts will be presented at our AGM 9th September 2025. After adoption they will be circulated to our members in our Bulletin.

Incidents

There have been no issues that have required reporting to the Charity Commission, NHS England Volunteer Service or our Auditors.

Nor have there been any complaints either formal or informal or sanctions against our Trustees or Volunteers.

Our by-laws and financial constitution have been rigorously upheld throughout the year under report.

Remunerations

The Tyneside Kidney Patients Associations Trustees and Volunteers receive no payments in respect to their duties. They give up their time freely and make no claim to payment for their involvement.
