Group Lead Volunteer’s Report
Calie Smith
Firstly, I’d like to welcome everyone to our AGM and presentation evening.
It’s been a busy and exciting year for the 47th Scout Group, with lots happening behind the scenes. We began running Squirrels taster sessions last November and in January we proudly launched a full Squirrels section. This now means we have four thriving sections across the group, all of which have had a very active and successful year.
It’s fantastic to see that the number of young people joining has increased across all four sections and that we’ve also welcomed new adult volunteers into the team. At the same time, a few adults have moved on to new opportunities or stepped back due to personal or work commitments. To those who have left us this year, thank you for your time, energy and the valuable support you have given to the group.
A highlight of the year was our Disneyland Paris trip in October, which was the first international adventure for the 47th Scout Group. It was a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.
Across the group, camps, activities and section programmes have provided our young people with opportunities to develop life skills, teamwork and confidence while having a lot of fun along the way.
Our fundraising events continue to play a vital role in supporting the group. They help cover the cost of running the building, replacing equipment and keeping subscription fees, camps and trips affordable, ensuring that Scouting at the 47th remains accessible to all.
I would like to make a small plea: if you, or anyone you know, could spare even an hour a week to help in any capacity, whether within a section, supporting behind the scenes, or joining our Trustee Board – we would be very grateful. The Trustee Board meets around five times a year, focusing on supporting the overall running and development of the group.
Finally, I want to offer my sincere thanks to everyone involved: our Adult Leaders, Young Leaders, Trustees, and parents, for your dedication and ongoing support and of course, to our amazing young people, whose energy and enthusiasm make everything we do worthwhile. It’s wonderful to see so many of them enjoying their time at section nights, events and camps throughout the year.

Trustees Report
Caroline Wood – Trustee
Firstly, on behalf of the Trustees, I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our volunteers, our young people and of course, the parents. Your commitment and enthusiasm are what make this group so special and this year has been an especially important one as we celebrated 100 years of the 47th Scout Group.
To mark this incredible milestone, we enjoyed not one but two major celebrations. In October, 40 of our members travelled to Disneyland Paris for the Group’s very first international trip. It was an unforgettable four days and one that we hope to repeat again in 2027. We also held a Group Celebration Day, which we opened up to the wider community. The turnout was fantastic and it was wonderful to see so many people joining us to celebrate together.
Across all of our sections, we’ve also seen a real increase in the number of young people taking part, as well as the addition of new leaders. That’s a very positive sign for the future of the Group. The Section Leaders will share more about this in their reports.
Of course, while there has been so much to celebrate, the past year hasn’t been without its challenges. We’ve had several Trustee Committee members step down. This has meant we have had extra strain on the small number of members whilst we organise records, access to bank accounts and of course the ongoing building problems so I want to take a moment to thank them for their dedication and hard work in keeping everything running. On a brighter note, we’ve also had some parents come forward with an interest in joining the committee and that support is very welcome indeed.
Turning to finances: for the year 2024/25, we finished with a deficit figure of £1,146. Just so everyone is clear our income is either through the monthly subscriptions you pay and fundraising. The monthly subscriptions are divided between resources for section nights, the running costs of our building and the membership and insurance fees we are required to pay to Scouts UK. These membership fees have now risen to £53.50 per member per year with an increase due again for January. Unfortunately, this means the subs we collect no longer cover all of our running costs. Each year, we now need to raise over £4,000 just to break even. As a Trustee Committee we need to discuss how we can cover these outgoing for the future.
Finally, with regards to the building: our insurance claim is still ongoing, but as with all claims it takes time. Looking ahead, we need to think seriously about the long-term future of the Group and start preparing for the day when this building will need to be replaced.
Thank you once again to everyone who has supported us this year. Despite the challenges, there has been so much to celebrate and the future of the 47th Scout Group remains bright.

Squirrels Report
Calie Smith – Section Team Leader
The 47th Squirrels began in November 2024 with a series of taster sessions, welcoming around 20 children aged 4 and 5 over four weeks.
The sessions were very well received and we officially launched the new Squirrels section in January 2025. Since then, we’ve had around 20 children involved, with a regular attendance of about 15 Squirrels each week. Although a few have moved on to other activities, our young Squirrels remain enthusiastic, energetic and eager to take part in everything we do.
Our one-hour sessions fly by, for both the leaders and the children! Through our programme, activities and badge work, the Squirrels have developed valuable skills that support their confidence, teamwork and personal growth. Over the past few months, it’s been fantastic to see how engaged and proud they are to be part of the 47th Group.
A few of our Squirrels have recently transitioned to Beavers and we’re proud that a couple achieved their Acorn Award, having previously been part of another Squirrels group.
Feedback from both parents and Squirrels has been overwhelmingly positive. Many parents have commented on how much their children enjoy the activities and how the sessions have helped improve their social skills and confidence.
Our leadership team this year includes: Cricket (Calie Smith), Matt Crayton, Nina Nawrot, Katherine Hilton, Philippa Sayers
We are also very grateful for the help and energy of our Young Leaders and Scouts: Amelia, Nettie, Rachel and Xavier.
Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the Squirrels over the past 10 months, especially the parents for your encouragement and appreciation.
We are currently looking for additional parent help, on a rota basis, to ensure we maintain the right adultto-child ratios and continue to deliver fun and safe sessions. If you’re able to help, even occasionally, please do let me know.
A big thank you also goes to the other section leaders who have stepped in to support us when needed, your help is very much appreciated.

Beavers Report
Calie Smith – Section Team Leader
The 47[th] Beavers have been very busy over the year and so enthused, section numbers have continued to be steady and every growing. We have had a few beavers transition to cubs over the year and achieving their Bronze award.
We have had several sleepovers/camps at the hut and Alfrey centre.. Beavers have also attended group events in the last year: Harvest – Collected food Donations, Remembrance parade and Carole Service at Christmas.
Beavers attending are regularly receiving badges and skills to help support their development and confidence through a varied programme offering all the children/Beavers the opportunity to take part and achieve. This has enhanced over the year and continuously looking at challenges and change to keep up to date and still keep the ethos of the Beaver Scouts values and developing skills.
Feedback and Comments from parents and beavers has been very positive over the past year, they have enjoyed the camps and activities a lot and have been very supportive.
The Leadership team over the year: myself-Cricket-Calie Smith, Magpie-Caroline Wood, Ladybird-Katie Wrenn, Fox- Pat Cousins, Toad- Lincoln Warner, Badger Jake Wood Young Leaders: Vicky, Tegan & Ryan.
Finally I would just like to say a ‘ Big Thank You’ to everyone involved in this section and their support over the last year. Especially the new parents, who have come aboard helping at events as an occasional helper/leader.
A ‘ Thank You’ to other section leaders who have stepped in when needed for her support and which is gratefully received.
Cubs Report
Gary Smith – Section Team Leader
Wow what a whirlwind the last 12 months have been with one of the the highlights being the Disney trip last October.
We are currently continuing to run a diverse program with a mix of hard & soft skills for the Cubs to experience. Our aim is to give these young people the opportunity to experience a wide variety of challenging activities & experiences to help them grow in confidence and develop into more rounded individuals as they progress through their time with our section and on into their time in Scouts. The aim is for all Cubs that have been with the section for the full two & a half years to achieve their Silver Chief Scout Award before they advance to Scouts. We have awarded 5 Silver awards in the last 12 months.
Scouts Report
Gary Smith - Section Team Leader
The Scouts section continues to go from strength to strength with the section currently having 27 Scouts, 2 Young Leaders and 7 leaders. As with the Cubs section we are currently running a diverse & challenging program with a mix of hard & soft skill based activities to help develop the scouts and make them more independent and prepare them for when they advance to Explorers.
The Scout section continues to maintain a good level of fully active members and progressing towards their Gold Chief Scout Award of which we have awarded 5 in the last 12 months.
