Result for the year
eratin
The underlying result for 'core' operatlng income and expendlture for the hospice was a deficlt of
£1.4rn in the year. This wa5 a larger deficit than we had anticipated in our orlglnal budget for the
vear and was largely as a result of a contlnued difflcult fundraising environment, further
infrastructure development and inflationary pre55ures for much of the year.
Our expendlture Ilne Includes an'exceptlonal, item of £0.7m In relatlon to a flxed asset Impairment
charge in the year. This is for flxed asseis whlch are to be disposed of durin8 FY 24125 as a result of

The overall result showing In the accounts for the year is, however, a Surplus of £2,941,198. M05t
signlficantly in the year, The Build capltal appeal raised in excess of £4.5m olvaluable funds towards
the project whlch will improve and modernise the premlse5 over the coming two years. Income

The result for the year also follows significant efforts by the income generation team to adapt our
ways of fundraising in the face of a continued challenging environment and to ensure 'core' income
is still pripritised alongside the efforts for the capltal appeal.
Our flnanclal position has been managed carefijlly for over 37 years, allowlng us to bulld reserves.
We are fortunate that these reserves are currently providin8 US with some security and stabillty and
are belng used In part to fund The Bulld project.
To 5UPPOrt our planned investment, the Trustees agreed a short-tem financial plan that would see
some annual deficlt5 for'core, Income and expenditure incurred for a few years, to be funded from
our reserves, before relurnin8 to break-even. The accounts therefore Indude a combined
desl8natlon of reserves of £12.5m to cover both our contrlbutlon towards The Bulld and anticipated
deficlts. We are acutely aware, however, that the level of free reserves Ihal we hold will decrease
in Ilne with our investment in the Build project and our need to carefully manage budgets and our
balance5heet Posltion oncethe Capital appeal has ended and ourincomerevertsto belnggenerated
from 'core' actfvity alone.
The Trustees believe that above strateyi to designale funds 5$ a good and approprlate use of our
reserves and are confldent that we wlll remaln flnanclally sustalnable and able to support children
and famllies in the longer term. Allocating funds to the Build and short-term deficlt budgets Is
necessary to ensure that we continue to invest in our infrastructure and Improve our services to

a basis for our opinion. This includes consideration of the risk of acts by the entity that were contrary to

In response to the risk of irreBularities and non<ompliance wlth laws and ie8ulations, includin8 fraud, we
designed procedures whlch Included:
Enqulry of mana8ernent and those charged wlth 8overnance around actual and potentlal IItIBatlon

Revlewlng minutes of meetings of those charged wlth governan￿.
Assesslng the extent of compllance wlth the laws and regulations considered to have a dlrect

Reviewing financial statement dlsclosures and testing to supportin6 documentatlon to assess

Performln8 audlt work over the risk of mana8ement bias and overflde of controls, Including testlng

Performln8 audit work over the timing and recognltlon of revenue and In partlcular whether It has

Because of the inherent limitations of an audlt, there Is a rlsk that we will not detect all irre8ularities,
Includlng those leading to a material mlsstatement In the flnancial statements or non.compllance wlth
re8ulatlon. Thls risk Increases the more that compllance with a law or re8ulatlon is removed from the events
and transartions reflected In the f inancial statements, as we will be less likely to become aware of instances
of non-compliance. The risk of not detecting a materlal mlsstatement resulting frorn fraud is hlgher than for
one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omi551on5, misrepresentations,
or the override of internal control.
