Group Scout Leader’s report November 2025
1[st] /36[th] Doncaster (St Peter’s Warmsworth) Scout Group Group Registration Number 46871 Charity Registration 517848 Rear of St Peter’s Church, Warmsworth Road, Warmsworth, Doncaster Catchment area Warmsworth, Edlington, Balby
Membership
This year our total membership at the end of January 2023 was 77. The membership invoice is our largest single payment in the financial year – a cost of approx. £63 per young member. Our membership is up by 13 young people over the last two years.
We continue to be a very active group offering a wide range of activities on a weekly basis as well as additional camps and trips outside of these sessions. My thanks go to all the leaders, young leaders and helpers who ensure that the weekly programmes remain interesting and challenging to each section and who give up their own spare time to provide extra activities on weekends.
It should also be noted that there are also people “behind the scenes” who you may not see at weekly meetings but whose input into the successful running of our group should not be underestimated. Thanks go to anyone who has helped in any way throughout this past year. To keep the momentum, interest and enthusiasm going in such a large group of people is not an easy task.
Group Activities
As usual we have continued to organise regular fundraisers and social evenings. These are aimed at allowing people to get together on an informal basis, meeting parents and leaders from other sections. It also gives our young members the chance to mix with other sections too, so that when they come to make their link into the next section, they hopefully feel more comfortable.
These fundraising events have been well received and enjoyed by a good number of young people and their families. They are also vital in allowing us to keep our subs at a minimum so that cost is not a barrier to a young person getting the most out of Scouting.
Our presence in the community is visible at Warmsworth Gala which restarted in 2022 and is generally our biggest fundraiser in terms of revenue. We also help out at Carols in the Park at Christmas which is held at Warmsworth Library and for which we receive a donation. We also attend the Remembrance Day parade organised by the Parish Council - this year (2024) we offered constructive feedback as regards the set up of the event and are working with the PC to make improvements for 2025.
We continue to use OSM (an online management system) to maintain our badge records and membership database. We also use this to send out information and invitations to activities.
Headquarters/Equipment
Our Hut continues to be our main concern and over the past 12 months we have carried out much needed repairs and improvements.
The heating has been replaced by a new combi boiler and radiators.
The toilets have been replaced – thanks to Akela for giving up so much time to ensure they were to a high standard.
The interior has been decorated – thanks to volunteers from British Gas under the leadership of Ryan Ackroyd for the time they donated.
The patio has been lowered to prevent further water leakage during heavy rain fall.
New tents have been purchased, primarily for the cub and scout sections.
We will be meeting as a Trustee Board in the near future to agree our priorities for the next couple of years.
Finance
Our balance sheet shows that we remain a financially stable group and we monitor our finances on a regular basis. Our main outgoing is our annual census payment to Scout HQ (around £4800 in 2025) which is paid in the first quarter of each year, we do however try to ensure that sufficient funds are available by December to prevent having to do any last minute fundraising in January and February.
We take advantage of Gift Aid and organise a number of fundraising initiatives to ensure our income remains at the level required.
