Chair’s Report 2021-2022

Last year I began my report by commenting that the year 2020-2021 had been one of “ups and downs”. Little has changed over this last year.

A really positive development is that all sections resumed weekly rehearsals indoors from September. The Orchestra and Concert Band remain in their usual venue of St Peter’s Church and the choir now rehearses in St Michael’s Church. Despite its shortcomings in one or two aspects, a vote was recently taken and St Michael’s - for the time being - remains the preference for the majority of Singers, rather than Bollinbrook School, the pre-Covid venue.

There has been a growing sense of “normality” generally, with the joy of finally performing concerts again after a lengthy hiatus. The Concert Band kicked of the season with a successful outdoor gig in Victoria Park last September, and the first joint orchestra/choir concert of the season in November was enormously well-supported, with additional seating required to accommodate the unforeseen audience numbers. Unfortunately, the spread of the Omicron variant in late November-December led to a noticeably reduced audience for the various Christmas concerts, but we believe this to be a temporary blip, as borne out by the excellent turnout at the final orchestral concert of the season in May. All sections have performed according to our schedule, and this has given enormous pleasure to performers.

In addition to the programmed concerts, Singers also held a very successful Singing Day in September, organised largely by Moira and led by Ian, which was a great occasion after so many stop-start lockdowns, and also brought in some new members.

The Committee has worked hard to maintain the Society as positively as possible and we have met regularly, most usually on Zoom but more recently face-to-face, updating Covid policies, managing ever-changing concert and rehearsal arrangements and reviewing the financial situation. It has been a genuine team efort and I can’t thank Committee members enough for their support, ideas, energy and creativity as we have navigated the turbulent waters.

Currently the Committee is undertaking some “housekeeping” tasks - reviewing and rationalising all the “key” documents of the Society and ensuring that these are held centrally (and henceforth updated regularly); these include professionals’ contracts, statutory policies, etc.

As always, my sincere thanks go to our professionals: Tony, Ian, Julia, Rachel and Ellis for all their eforts, enthusiasm, energy and commitment towards their respective sections and the Society as a whole. We are very fortunate indeed to have had such dedicated, good-natured and positive professionals, so it is with enormous sadness that I must refer to two great losses in recent months: Ellis and Ian.

The Death of Ellis Thompson

Ellis, our talented, enthusiastic, much-loved and respected Orchestra Leader died suddenly in mid-May. Ellis was a mere 31 years old. The cause of death remains unknown at present.

At the time of writing this report, I am in regular communication with Ellis’s parents, planning a Service of Memorial/Thanksgiving for him to be held at St Michael’s Church here in Macclesfield on Wednesday 29[th ] June (service 10.15am with an afternoon celebration of his life, with tea and cakes, including more informal tributes, and many musical items from his Manchester friends and colleagues). We do encourage as many members as possible to come along to one or both of these events. Ellis’s death signifies a great loss to the Society, but a life- changing tragedy for his family, and our heartfelt sympathies are with them.

The Resignation of Ian Chesworth

Ian informed us in the spring that he, Sarah and the children will be relocating to Malaysia this summer as Sarah has been appointed Head of an international school near Kuala Lumpur and Ian will be running the extra-curricular programme in the same school. Whilst we are delighted at this exciting opportunity for the whole Chesworth family, Singers were devastated by the implications for themselves!

We do wish Ian and Sarah every happiness and success in their new venture, but we will miss Ian’s enormous talent (I suspect he could, if pushed, sing all four voice parts simultaneously as well as separately), his approachable, friendly and encouraging style, and his groan-worthy jokes! We hope he will keep in touch and let us know how he fares in his new role in the tropics.

The Appointment of Dr Mark McCombs, new MD for Singers

After the initial shock, preparations to recruit a new Musical Director were quickly underway and eventually, in mid- May after a thorough and fairly challenging process, we appointed Dr Mark McCombs as our new MD. We had a strong field of applicants, and we are delighted that Mark – a young man with great enthusiasm and talent - agreed to accept the post. Mark has subsequently been attending Singers’ rehearsals and sang in our concert on 18[th ] June; a great mercy as numbers were unfortunately well down this term (probably as “sumer is icumen in”). Ian has now conducted his final gig with us - the summer concert - but he will be playing the organ at Ellis’s Memorial Service on 29[th] .

Website Manager: Roger Dowling

After long years of service as our website manager, Roger Dowling is standing down – and not only from this role but also as a member of KEMS Symphony Orchestra. Roger lives some distance away and has decided to leave the Society for reasons which I reluctantly conclude are perfectly reasonable.

I cannot thank Roger enough for all he has contributed in terms of the website and the design of posters and programmes. He has been unfailingly good-natured, constructive and extremely efficient in all he has done in these areas and his withdrawal is a great blow. Of course, we will miss his services considerably, but we will also very much miss him as a long-time friend and fellow musician. Our very best wishes go with him for continued music-making, good health and enjoyment of life.

Miraculously, we have a new website manager who has sprung from the “ashes” – Bob Crawshaw (a member of both Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra). I am hoping that my mentioning him in this report makes it “official” and that Bob won’t back out now. Bob is currently liaising with Roger about the website and a full handover will take place by the end of this season. Fortunately for us, Bob has agreed to take on the Yapsody/PayPal online booking system as well as website management, which is a great relief. I am also delighted to say that Elaine Sharples from Singers has wonderfully volunteered to take on the design of posters and programmes. Thank-you, both of you.

We are so very grateful to all who are willing to assist – opportunities for volunteering are many and varied so please don’t hide your light under a bushel if you would like to help in any way.

Our Full Committee has remained fairly stable throughout the year, with Katy Bradley resigning owing to her (not inconsiderable) family and work commitments, and Linda Pyatt stepping up. We are very grateful to Katy for all the contributions she has made over the years, and are really pleased to welcome Linda onto the Committee.

2022-23 Dates, and Symphony Orchestra / Singers Programme

We agreed the 2022-23 rehearsal dates for all three sections in January 2022. These are on the website should anyone need to refer to them (also emailed out to all members in January). In addition, we scheduled the various Orchestra / Singers programme and concert dates for the season. The Concert Band usually schedules its own concerts separately, throughout the year.

Of course, Ian’s departure and the arrival of Mark mean that we now need to review the Singers’ rehearsal dates and programme for next season (which could have some implications for the orchestral pieces also – although we hope this won’t be the case). Mark is currently liaising with both Ian and Tony, and Singers’ Committee members will meet with him once he has a better feel for what Singers programme he feels confident scheduling next year.

Finances

I would like to give my sincere thanks to Paul Spedding, not only for being a magnificent husband, but for managing the Society’s finances so competently. He has submitted a detailed set of accounts for this meeting so I won’t pre- empt his conclusions / recommendations, although it should be emphasised that, as anticipated last year, the Society’s finances are not looking very healthy and a rise in members’ subs is inevitable. However, we are confident that members will understand, and will also recognise the excellent value for money their subscription ofers.

Additional thanks go to the many members who have given me personal support and the Society the benefit of their talents, energy and time over the year:

to Richard Moss for being the Secretary everyone wants – keeping me on track and doing all the work. Also for his role within the Concert Band and Orchestra, and for his general wisdom;
to Moira Taylor for her enthusiasm, ideas and hard work in relation not just to her area of responsibility (Publicity) but more generally for the wider development of the Society;
to Andrew Tyler who took on the role of Orchestra Chair when Tim Ward stood down last season. Stepping up in a pandemic I’m sure hasn’t been easy, but Andrew has quickly learned more ropes than any of us thought we had signed up for, and his insights and practicality have certainly been very helpful to the Committee and the Society;
to the Full Committee who have coped both with the exasperations / frustrations of Zoom, and with the return of live meetings, to ofer their time, efort, advice and ideas. The team has pulled together wonderfully over the last couple of years, seeing us through a very difficult time and (almost) to the other end. There have been undoubted periods of stress over the year, and I know that I can always rely on Committee members to put problems into perspective and help to find a way forward. Thank you all;
to the Appointment Committee – this was made up of myself, Paul Spedding (Treasurer), Andrew Tyler (Orchestra rep) – later replaced by Richard Moss when Andrew’s father died (Richard also brought a Band perspective to the proceedings), Anne Thomson and Moira Taylor. It was an interesting and challenging process. I believe we worked efectively and made an excellent appointment;
and finally, to all who undertake any role to support their own section or the wider Society, whether this be music hire/librarianship, soloist hire, communications, refreshments at rehearsals/concerts, ticket sales, front of house, moving staging and furniture for concerts, or any other of the myriad ways in which help is needed. We really couldn’t function without every one of you.

All that remains is for me now is to thank everyone in the society for their music-making, and for their continued support and generosity of spirit over the last year. Now, forward into the 2022-23 season! I am hoping to have a taste of what the old “normality” was like.
