LhJring the year 2020121 the company provided wblic benefit through navigating covid.
transitioning and implementing a new leadership structure whilst gNing erealNe oprA)rtunilies
wheTe possible. Whilst Ihere was no louring output the company were atAe to produce work
specifically for on screen. The Access & Edl￿tt.0n department delivered 634 sessions lo
5,065 unique users with eryagemenl of 30,840 (repeal users) from a wide sectron of
participants of varying ages, abilities arKI cultural backgrounds.
Due lo Cov•J-19 all touring eeased in March 2020 culbThJ short the 81ack Waters Iwr which
was due lo continue lo lour the UK. Germany and Intlia. Whilsl the company could not
engage with audieru% in a thealre setting. vras set ab￿rt to create a Digital Program.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
The final San¢Jpil event for the Choreographers and Composers Lab was held online in June
2020. Faulitated by the projecfs dramaturg. Beth Cassani, alongside Ihe proiKt's Artistic and
Music Directorfs. Sharon Walson and Alexander Campkin. the sandpit session was an
opportunity to bring all pafticipants together for guided conversations and to share Iheir
experiences. Theresa Beattie worked alongside the organisalion throughout the lrfe of the
project 10 ensure she captured and wlness key ￿arn1r￿J in order to complete a th¢Thgh arKI
enI￿hlenIn9 eValUat￿n rem Phoenix is keen to continue to develop this as a 'Special
Proiecf in future years.
Arbstic Director Sharon Watson left the or9anw￿n ui May 2020 to movè on lo become CEO
and Principal of Northem School of ContemEx)rary Dance. Sharon was in PM)St for 11 years.

Director was uThJerway the company fell an artistic lead was still required. Jamaal Burkmar
wa$ appointed as Artistic Associate and wthin his time in role created a performance piece
From Nothing specif¢cally for non-traditional settirvJs. he also had a chance lo complete
Dance Wignettes a work that was eommissKJned out of a successful collaboration in the
Choreographers & Composers Lab whth took place in 2019. Both of these works are
anned to be shared lo audiences in 21-22 and beyond.

Phoenix commissioned three bl* rnale choreographers lo ￿eale work specrfically for
screen., collab¢xating ¥￿th mu5rians. film makers and degree students based al Leeds City
College. Company Dancer Cartos Marts"nez, Kennedy Munlanga Junior and Miguel Atunaga
all created work wtlh the dancers, comFosers and film crews lo create works belween 5 and 8
minutes in length. These were released in late Spring 2021 with the aim lo promote them
across Film Festivals in the future. One of these wNks will be develoFed into a full stage work
for 2022123 season and beyond.
Live audience numbers have been deeply affected by the pandemic. No theatre touring due
lo the venues being dosed. meant a signrficant drop in numbers of our INe audience
members. However, fwJures display good online engagement for the various events. plafforms
and videos shared across scKial media channels thr(NJghwl Ihe year.
The company shrfted focus in the Aulumn by sharing studFO activity dKJrtally. in the way of
video reels, offering insight to studio activty in a refreshed approach. The reels were a
success in engaging new audiences across swial media and increased our following on
multiple plafforms. This also ensured we ￿rna1ned connected lo our existirwJ audiences.
Viewing numbers for the reels ranged betsveen 5,000 views lo 25.orxi views within days of
being released. The marketing department has been able to capture the rise in followers and
traction lo the website as a direcl result of this vnrk.
We were delighled lo announce the arrival of multi-award-winning director. choreographer
and dancer Da￿ Hurst as the CoMpan￿S new Artistic Director in Fetyuary 2021. Jennifer
Coleman-Peers joined as the CEO in March 2021, completing the leadership triad.
Whilst the pandemic had a huge impact on the orgaThsalion the company was still able to
produce hKJh quality outputs. engage aU(lien￿S arKI Continued a scaled dovm offer for
young peop￿e.
The company naviqated pandern￿ to the best of its abilities. ensuring that all staff
remained in contract throughout. By ulilising the Govemmenl's Job Relent￿n Scheme and
then the llexi furlough stheme. no redundancies were made. and all staff were topped up lo
theirfull wage throUg1￿t 2020121.
Access & Educatlon
The Access & EduCat￿Tr departments offer was deeply affected by COVID 19 as activity was
for a short lime ground lo a hall. The team wrKked rapidty lo ensure we could have an online
offer and to remain connected with our Y￿ThJ people and their famil￿5. School provision has
been up arKI down through(yJt the year in line national guidance when they have been
openldosed and then each School plrts in places its own Covid procedures. There has been a
blended approach on delivery in our own ￿JIldi￿ and we coukt Qperale face to face
dasses safely. tw were delivered.
Many of our participants struggled lo engage wth online pyovision. There was a dear display
of Digital Povety around the city. the cornpany brought this lo the table in multiple nefvAYk
meetings. Throughout the year. vthen reStn"et￿ns allowed, those groups unable to connect
online have been made a prKyity in lem7s of making other connections. We aim lo priorilise
them as we return.
8la¢k Waters Heritage Project - onwng from 2019 the profrect funded by National Heritage
Lottery has been completed. The performance of Black Waters expl¢xed historic stories
from 8rilish, colonral past. that of the Zong Massacre, where 1 ￿ Afrran slaves were killed so
British slave owners could claim insurance on thew lives and tales from Indian jail. Kala Pani.
Through the educab.on strand we were able to engage with over 130 young people. During
the summer months final workshops lo a number of the syoups look place and enabled
inlegal evaluatson materials to be gathered evidencing Pleitage leaming. The Sandpit
event lo disseminate the Research Material. and lo sh*elwomote the Digital Resource ran
online and was well atterKled in December 2020.

Saturday School and Illuminate
During the year Ihere was success rn gaining ftjrther funding to continue Illuminate for another
year. A5 one of our most vulnerable group5 {young people with additional needs) many

¢ontsining props and pre4ecorded movement sessions lo engage the families ai their own
leisure.
Behveen pre-rewded and INe zi)om sessions. Saturday School has remained consi5tenlly
delivered throug￿ul aThJ face to face delNery resumed after Easter 21.
Holiday Acllyity
One partner school had accessed the Healthy Holidays funding and engaged the Access &
Education department lo ddiver dance wrthin their S x week5 summer holiday offer. This
provision was largeled at pupils who are in receipt of free school dinners lo ensure that even
in holiday peri¢xls they have access ¢0 a healthy meal every day.
Let's Move
The company partnered with some of the UICS leading dance wtists and organisalions to
deliver an online summer course. OanceEasl and The Fyace teamed up with Phoenix Dance
Theatre, Oancexchange, National Oance C(Mnpany Wales, Pavilion OafKe S¢)uth West to
delwer h￿h quality dan￿ training.
Phoenix Youth Academy
All students have shown incredible resilience throughout this lime arKI managed to slay
focused. the retention on numbers has proven Ihis. The pre-vocalional fraining course not
only focused on technique during this year bJl on creative opportunities too. The weekly
training remained on offer throughout the year. and even created work for digital
perforrnances bolh for our in-house Plattomis. a w(vk that is now featured in an online
exhibition in partnership wilh Space 2 and for the regional plarfomi Refresh. Though the
launch of the new satellite academy in Doneasler was delayed. planned expansion of the
Academy program is set lo launch in September 2021. Despite the online training we have
had multiple students sue¢essful in gaining places this year al vocational schools including
Northem School of Contemporary Dan￿, Rambert School. Laban. London Contemporary
Dance Sehod. Two of the current cohort were successful in gaining places with the National
Youth dance Company.
Student fee5 were waivered for the initial term - July) due lo the uncertainty of the
situation and stgnificant changes to the home INes of many of the Y￿n9 people. Many
familie$ still chose lo offer the lees as a donats'on lo the company.

During 2020121 the compary was able to increase reserves signrfrcantly as so much of the
performance activity had been impacied due lo the lockdown. Due to careful budget
management the company finds ilself well placed and m¢ye resilient ffinancially as we return
to performance actsvty.
The directors maintain their view that the charity needs reserves in line wth the guidance
issued by the Charity Commission and have successfully buillJbeJ.eserv.es_to_thetsquiualenl
ol three months operating costs. The unrestitted reserves of the charity a￿ intended to meet
the risks and contingencies as folluws..

continue to navigate the changing landscape as we return to INe performance and to truly
celebrate its 40th anniversary.
The second work in collabor8b.on with Opera North. was postponed and wll be delivered
in 2021122. Further development of this partnership will see the company's nevAy appointed
Artistic Director create dance for the Symphonic Dances by Bemslein which is due lo tour in
Autumn 2021.
The Digital programme initiated at the height of Ihe pandemic will now be an annual feature
within our aclivty plans. this year commissioning three female black emerging
choreographers lo create new work speofically for screen.
As we approach our 40th annNersary we have taken the oppjrlunty lo ￿￿e¢l on the rth)ts of
the company and to explore what we aspire to achieve over the next 40 years.

ACCOUNTING POLICIES

in the preparation of the financial slalements are as folloyts:
Basis of Pr•paration
The financial statemenls have been prepared in accordance wlh Accounting and Reporting
by Charitres.. Slalemenl of Recommended practi￿ applicable lo charities preparing their
accounts in accordance V¥Tth the Finanaaj Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and
Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) {effective 1 January 2015}- (Charities SORP {FRS 102)), the
Financial ReForting Stsndard applicable in the UK and Repubiic of Ireland {FRS 1021 and the
Companies Act 2W6.
Phoenix Dance Theatre meets the definiti¢)n of a wblic benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and
liabilities are initially recognised al historical cost ¢y transac*ion value unless othervise stated
in Ihe relevant accojnting rdicy r￿te$.
Going Concern
The directors consider that the￿ are material uncertainties aimxrt the charitable CoMpan￿S
ability to continue a5 a going concem. The trustees do not consider that there are any sources
of eslimation uncertainty at the reporting dale that have a ygnifieanl risk of causing a material
adjustment lo the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities V•ithin the next remirrfJ period.
Income Recognition Policies
Items of income are recognised arml induded in the acL7)unts when all of the following criteria

Doriatod Sefvlces and Facilities
Donated seNiees or facilities are recojnised as income ￿en the tharity has control over
the item, any conditions asswaled wlh the donated item have been met. the receipt of
economic benefit from the use by the charity of the item is probable and that economi¢
benefit can be measured reliably. On receipt. donated services and facilitses are re¢x)gnised
on the basis of the value of the gift to the charity vthich is the amount the charity ￿)Uld have
been willing to pay to rt)lain services or faulilies of equivalent econofflic benefit on the open
market,. a corresponding amount is then rwnised in expenditure in the period of receipt.
Intefest Receivable
Interest on funds held on deposit is induded vknen receivable and the amount Can be
measured rdiably by the charity.. this is n(mially upon notification of the interest paid IY
payable by the bank.

Fund Accounting

donations sthich the dorw has specified are lo be sc4ely used for partI￿lar areas of the

Expenditure and lffecoverable VAT
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to rnake a payment
to a third party. it is prObat￿e thal seluemenl will be required and the amount of the oblNJation
can be measured rdiably.
Expenditure on Charitable activities indudes the costs of providing staff carry the
vlork of the charity and thwr asswated support costs.
Irrecoverable VAT is ¢harged as a cost against the activity for vthich the expenditure
Yas incurred.
Allocatlon of Support Costs
Support costs are those functions that assist the wvrk of the charity bul do not directly
undertake charitable activities. SuppN)rt costs indude back office costs, finance. personnel,
payroll and governan￿ costs thich gJPPOrt the company's activities. The bases on which
support costs have been dlctabj are set oul in nolg 6.
