Like so many, our return to normality following the pandemic was a little hesitant, but we soon got back into full swing and this has been a terrific Scouting year at Stakeford. Thanks to all our families and supporters for sticking with us. Our youth membership has risen yet again and demand for Beaver places has been at its highest ever. Retention and transition into Cubs and Scouts mean we have the greatest number of youth members in the Group’s history. This is testemanent to the hard work and dedication of our Leader team, whom I salute once again, for the imaginative and selfless effort they put in to making our programme a great success.

We have been joined this year by new Assistant Cub Scout Leaders: youth member parents, Amy McDermott and Trevor McKay, and former youth member, Philippa Johnson, who are all now busy undertaking leader training. Also joining us as a Pack Assistant is former youth member, Ben Watson. The Executive Committee welcomed youth member parents, Daisy Tong and Laura Thompson, who will shortly take over in the roles of Treasurer and Secretary respectively. We warmly welcome them all and hope they will have many years of fun and contentment with us. Our former Chairman, Dave Holmes, stood down as a Trustee and we thanked him for the contribution he made to Group business over several years.

The Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, has awarded Marlene Railton the Association’s **Silver Acorn** in recognition of over 25 years of exceptional service. Well done. This is richly deserved recognition after many years of dedicated fund-raising and volunteering to a consistently high standard.

Our accounts reveal more success in securing fund-bearing grants from a number of sources. These have included: Northumberland County Council’s Community Chest, Covid Business Support Grants, the Ridley Family Charity and, once again, the Lord High Sheriff’s fund. Our relationship with Stakeford Nurseries (part of Blyth Star Enterprises) continues to grow and we are grateful to the Nurseries’ team for gardening maintenance at our Hall and also for several visits to strim and cut grass at Bellingburnhead.

Being an adult volunteer in Scouts is sometimes hard work and challenging, it takes up time and energy, can stretch family patience and occasionally interferes with work commitments. Yet, it is always fulfilling and often very entertaining and satisfying. Our volunteer team is made up of old and new, with most getting involved originally as parent helpers. Several have completed more than 15 years’ service and one has exceeded 40 years. Some, including myself, have decided to retire or step-down during the

coming year. Therefore, we need new blood and fresh ideas in our leader team and Executive Committee, so we will be actively recruiting in coming months; stepping aside to give a new generation of volunteers the priceless experience of fun, joy and laughter, so freely given by our young charges.
