## Chair Report

Well we came back from Covid with a bang!

Every year there are so many people to thank, but this year seems a huge year for us in terms of support from people and associations. I would personally like to thank the leaders who, through adversity, have really delivered a truly first class programme for all our young people. From keeping them engaged on Zoom, to face to face in the Scout Hut; to being on camp/sleepovers and activities outside the hut. Without these exceptional volunteers running the programme for our young people, we would not be as successful as we have become.

Everyone of our volunteers has a key role in our group, but I would like to thank Lindsey (Hedgehog) for being the driving force behind our new look/new content website. I would also like to thank Kate for keeping the content up to date and relevant in terms of what the group has been up to over the year.

I would also like to thank three key members of the group who will be leaving us this year.

First up, Charlotte Scott! Thank you from all of us here for everything you have done in terms of fundraising for our not so little group. The hut has been totally renovated which is all down to you. An amazing achievement seen as you have no children who attend Scouts! Charlotte can be very proud of the new look hut and how it will benefit our group going forward.

Thank you to Claire Atkins. Our very thorough and fabulous Treasurer. Through Claire’s expertise she has been able to give the Exec the direction needed in order for the group to spend money where needed. The Hardship Fund was Claire’s idea and will be her lasting legacy for our group as new young people join and can enjoy scouting with help from the Exec.

Thank you to Kate Steadman. Kate even moved County during lockdown, but with thanks to Zoom has remained with us for three years. We are so grateful for all that you do for the Scouts and for keeping our website up to date and for the ongoing support you have given the group through Covid.

I will be so sorry to see these three fabulous women leave our group, each has brought something unique to our Exec, but I am also looking forward to working with some new equally fabulous people. Thank you also to Simon (Unicorn). He has been instrumental in driving the whole Scout group forward. Pushing leaders to work out Zoom; pushing the Exec to spend money on hut refurbs etc! He is the driving force behind the fabulous programmes that all of the young people have enjoyed over the last year. Without his leadership, I doubt we would have grown throughout Covid, and we certainly would not be sitting here in our newly refurbished hut if it weren’t for him working away out of hours behind the scenes. He is a constant source of encouragement, and it really is lovely to work alongside him. Thank you for all that you do for us at 1[st] Market Bosworth Scouts.

## Treasurer Report

The 2021/22 accounts show we were in a healthy financial position at year end, being able to carry a sizable surplus over into the new financial year. However, It should be noted that a proportion of this surplus has been ringfenced towards the Scout Hut Renovation Project, as it moves to its internal phase. Despite the difficulties in fundraising early in the year, our Grants Coordinator, Charlotte has been very successful in making applications towards the project. As Treasurer, I’m very thankful for the immense amount of work she has put in, resulting in our highest annual income to date.

In September 2022 we launched our Hardship Fund, with the aim of ensuring young people are able to engage in Scouting, regardless of their financial situation. We received a number of applications and I’m really pleased that we are now helping a small number of young people continue to access our group.

This is my final year in the role of Treasurer and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank members of the Executive Committee who have supported me throughout my time in the role . I wish both incoming and continuing members much success in their future endeavours.

## Yours in Scouting,

**CLAIRE ATKINS - TREASURER**

## GSL Report

Time again for the reflective look back at the last year for the period of April 21 to March 22. It always feels strange when we have recent activities at the forefront of our minds: National Arboretum, St Georges Day and all the awards our leaders got, Triumph Factory, fundraisers; Quiz and Chips, Cub Café, Ashby Canal walk – oh next years report is going to be a long write and read.

So what happened last year; well the biggest news was something that was youth led, unexpected and a major change for our group. We had so much demand for another Cub section in April 2021 we needed to adapt our 5 year plan and we opened a second night. Friday Cubs was born with the help of Ian “Badger/Akela”, Tom with Paul and Abi “Fox” coming to help with the first months and “as and when” they can going forward. Even more impressive was that we were still coming out of lockdown so this started with covid restrictions in place. A big thanks to our Monday Cubs who have been amazingly supportive working together on planning sharing programs and a BIGGER THANKS to the young people for showing the interest and staying with us.

Friday Cubs has been a success and this is shown in our youth numbers that were reported in February 2022 in our annual census.

I am so pleased to say that we can announce a 21 year high in youth and adult involvement in Market Bosworth Scouts with our group size increasing to over 100 involved.

We have also grown the amount of girls in Scouting from 20% to 29% from 10 girls to 24 girls.

Our woman leaders remained the same at 3 leaders, however with recruiting more male leaders as a percentage we saw a decrease. In 1918 65% of Cub leaders were women you can read more here: https://heritage.scouts.org.uk/exhibitions/early-days-of-scouting-1907-1920/scoutingforgirls/

If your interested in becoming a leader, please contact me for a no obligation chat.

## **Nights Away**

Each section is targeted to offer a night/s away and I’m pleased that we managed to do the following last year:

1. Saturday 7th August 2021 for 1 night - Willesley Camp Site –Beavers Scouts and Fri Cub Scouts

2. Saturday 7th August 2021 for 4 nights - Willesley Camp Site – Scouts

3. Saturday 11th September 2021 for 1 night - Willesley Camp Site – Scouts

4. Friday 17th September 2021 for 2 nights - The Oaks Scout Campsite - Cub Scouts

5. Saturday 13[th] November 2021 for 1 night – Scout Hut – Beaver Scouts

We are really lucky to have some leaders in our group who have their nights away permits which allows us to take the young people on these trips. As I found out personally last year to get your nights away permit is a tough process with a lot of prep work and then rigorous assessment. We are also very fortunate to have instructors for Archery and Air rifle shooting in our group.

It takes a tremendous amount of effort to organise the camps. Thank you to the leaders who go the extra mile to make it happen. Also a thank you to the leaders and adults who support these camps without you they simply can’t happen.

Page **7** of **14**

I would like to take this opportunity to give some more thank you’s focusing on the work behind the scenes.

## **Behind the Scenes**

Our Grants and fundraising wonder woman – Charlotte - for going supersonic. Not only have we completed the £24K exterior project for the Scout hut we have hit our £50K target for the ramp and interior project. Charlotte has been an amazing driving force behind the scenes securing Scouting in Market Bosworth for future generations. She very much deserved the Unsung Hero award she received in April 2022, and these few lines do not do justice to the dedication and time given and the long lasting effects that the Scout Hut improvements will bring. THANK YOU.

You can read more about the award Charlotte received here: https://www.mbscouts.org.uk/news/article/our-market-bosworth-unsunghero

Our Leaders, Abi, Lindsay, Mike, Blossom, Pedro, Jenny, Ian, Tom, Kirk, Paul, Ed, Alex, Jon – I am in awe of you. To manage your work life, personal life, move between virtual scouting, rugby club outdoor then indoor at the Scout hut, badge and necker shortages, whilst proving a decent program all the while. Thank you so much for all the hours Scouting we don’t see.

Blossom received an Award for Merit in April 2022 in appreciate for all he does in Scouting. You can read more about the award Blossom received here:

https://www.mbscouts.org.uk/news/article/blossom-gets-bar-to-theaward-for-merit

I managed to sneak in with an award of merit this year and can be seen below pictured with my son Henry.

Our Website Guru’s – Lindsay and Kate – we are really seeing the benefit of the website, it helps our grants / fundraising, news articles are flowing in about what we are up to and it has an easy back end admin for new joiners.

Our Exec – Nix, Claire, Kate and Ian – for supporting our leaders and ensuring the survival of the Scout Group for future generations. Our leaders are very grateful knowing there is a strong Exec who listen to them and take on board what they need.

A big thank you to the Rugby club for helping us with a location to run our meetings they have continued to be so generous.

And the BIGGEST THANK YOU goes to all the families of the leaders and Exec members. Picking up the pieces of family life whilst we are volunteering. THANK YOU

Page **8** of **14**

## **Chief Scout Awards**

Each year since I joined in 2017 I have seen improvements in the program delivery and we are getting a lot closer to seeing more Cub and Scouts Chief Scout Awards. I am looking forward to next years report where I am hopeful of being able to share young people successes in this area.

## **Special mention**

We will be seeing, Charlotte, Kate and Claire leaving their current roles this year. I cannot thank them enough for all the support they have personally provided to me and to the Scout Group. I am sure that Claire will miss the bank runs, Kate will miss the news article uploads and Charlotte will miss chasing me. I certainly will miss them. Thank you for choosing to volunteer at Market Bosworth Scout Group you have been amazing.

To Abi “Fox” and Will on the birth of Albert our youngest person on the starting list for 1[st] Market Bosworth Scout Group. I got the impression that Abi may have been back Scouting before she was back working such is her dedication to the Beaver Scouts!

I think last year and our current recruitment request for new volunteers can be best summed up by Ralph Waldo Emerson who once said “Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.”. I don’t think any of us will consider ourselves a master in Scouting and we have managed to see growth in youth and adult numbers and in grants and fundraising. Please contact me if your interested in joining a fabulous team of volunteers delivering a Scouting experience.

Thank you all for your ongoing support.

## Yours in Scouting

## **SIMON JEFFERS - GROUP SCOUT LEADER**

P.S. We are always learning and striving to improve: At each section meeting we see areas we can improve on as we do for each camp. Some improvements need investment in time, some in money and some in simply educating ourselves. If you see anything that can be improved or are able to volunteer whether it be for cleaning the kitchen or running an event please let me know.

## Beavers Section AGM Report 2022

After 14 months of Beavers meetings over Zoom, it was so good to safely return back to face-to-face scouting in May 2021! We started with some very needed camp crafts with camp fires and s’mores making, and den building at Market Bosworth Rugby

Club. This really helped us get to know our newest Beavers that we invested over Zoom, and reconnect with our pre-lockdown Beaver Scouts! We are very grateful to MBRFC for offering us use of their outdoor areas and clubhouse which meant that we could restart face-to-face scouting after lockdown outdoors and then indoors into the winter term when our Scout Hut was being externally renovated.

We held an end-of-year party and presentation night in July at the rugby club at which we invested 5 new Beaver Scouts and presented Chief Bronze Scout Awards to 10 former-Beaver Scouts who’d swam up to Cubs during the lockdown. Every Beaver Scout and Leader received a personalised ‘Zoom award’ medal and certificate for their contribution during our time online.

From April 2021 to March 2022 we worked towards our Cyclist, Safety, Hobbies, Animal Friend, Creative, Experiment, Space, Cook, Camp Craft and Health & Fitness activity badges. We also completed our Air Activities, Navigator and Emergency Aid level 1 staged badges, as well as working towards the very important Challenge Badges for the Chief Bronze Scout Award. A lot of the activities undertaken to achieve these badges were requested by the Beavers themselves during our termly ‘log-chews’, where the Beavers shape the programme with their own ideas and the Leaders

facilitate to make it happen.

The Beavers got back under canvas at our August Camp at Willesley and Remembrance Day

Sleepover at the Scout hut. For many of the Beaver Scouts these events were their first nights away from their parents and carers, and they gained Nights Away badges for these events. A big thank you to our GSL Simon ‘Unicorn’ for arranging the August camp, and congratulations on receiving his Nights Away

Page **10** of **14**

Permit after his successful assessment at our Willesley camp, and for being our NAP holder at our Remembrance Day Sleepover.

In total, we have awarded 266 badges this year! We have a thriving and full Beaver Colony, with a waiting list of Beavers-in-Training! Each week the Beavers bring their smiles and enthusiasm to our meetings and it is a pleasure working with all these Young People.

In October we said a temporary goodbye to Fox as she went on maternity leave, with the Leaders, Parents and Carers contributing to a baby shower basket for her little Cub. Baby Albert arrived in early November, and following Fox’s return to Beavers in the new year, Albert has become a very much loved member of our Colony! Due to Fox’s maternity leave, we welcomed both Fox and Hedgehog’s

other halves Will (Rat) and Mike (Wild Boar) into the Colony as Section Assistants, to give us a helping hand when required. We were also grateful to James and Ellis, who often attend meetings in their Cub uniforms and give assistance to the Beavers, and provide good role models for our Beaver Scouts.

This year we started to operate a Parent Helper rota which has been wonderful for our Colony. We asked for help from each family just once per term, and the feedback we’ve had from the Parents and Carers has been great. They’ve really enjoyed seeing what goes on at the Beaver sessions each week, they’ve got stuck in and their own Beaver Scouts have really enjoyed having them attend! We’ll continue this rota and hopefully will be able to get more grown-ups through our 4 week challenge and signed up as Section Assistants!

Finally, we’d like to say a massive thank you to our GSL Simon Jeffers, our Chair Nix Morgan and all our Executive Committee for everything they do behind the scenes for our Scout Group. Also a massive thanks to Charlotte Scott for all her fundraising efforts and to the whole team for the next stage of Scout Hut renovation. We cannot wait to have a newly refurbished and functioning Scout Hut with the facilities and accessibility for us to continue Scouting for all in Market Bosworth for many years to come.

**FOX (ABI), HEDGEHOG (LINDSAY), PEDRO PONY (PEDRO) & KOALA (KYLE) - BEAVER SECTION LEADERSHIP TEAM**

## Friday Cubs Report

Core leaders starting to get the hang of things with Tom eager to take the cubs on their own camp this autumn.

5 Cubs have moved on to Scouts to date, sadly prior to achieving their silver badge. This will be a good target for those yet to move on.

Sessions over the last year have included, navigation and night hikes, backwoods cooking, jubilee, Eid, sports, cycling, teamwork, cooking and cycling.

I have seen them smiling laughing crying failing and succeeding through this last year.

Most impressively was how quickly and competently they packed away their tents and kit on district camp, they are not little beavers anymore and some are well on their way to being young adults.

**IAN (BADGER) – CUB SECTION LEADER**

Page **12** of **14**

## Monday Cubs Report

Well what can I say! We have steadily grown over the last two years, opening another cub section. We have a good leadership team consisting of myself Blossom, Peter Hardy (Pedro), Jenny Curtis (Wren) and fingers crossed we will have another leader with us soon who is new to the role, James Kendrick.

We have led some fun activities over the last two years moving to Zoom at the start of the pandemic. We have had scavenger hunts in the home, we have had District Camp at home which one or two participated in over that weekend. We have done cooking at home and some weeks we only had one or two join the sessions but we kept going.

It has been hard but we prevailed and persevered. When we could finally get back to face-to-face scouting we had the privilege of using the Rugby Club in Market Bosworth which was a great help. We did backwards cooking, rambles in the woods and utilising the Country Park we built dens and left them up. We did a litter pick around the village and were noticed by the locals who said we looked great and were well behaved, they thought it was good to see the youth groups making an effort for the village.

We have had visits from the local police who talked about stranger danger, stealing, home safety etc. They even stayed and presented some badges and we got them involved with a game of dodgeball. He stayed on shift to visit us especially and brought the 4X4 to show the kids.

The Cubs have been great to work with and enjoy coming and as leaders we love our time with them. We enjoy teaching our knowledge that we have learned over the years; we really like to find out what interests them and plan into the programme.

The Cubs have helped fundraise for the Scout Hut renovations, we held a Cub Café where the Cubs made cakes and biscuits plus lemonade and sold them in a pack.

We have had trips out to Triumph Motorcycle factory and the Cubs got the Guides stumped with a few questions. They commented on how well behaved they were and that they were a privilege to have. We then hiked back to Sutton Wharf with an ice-cream stop along the way.

We also attended the National Space Centre in Leicester for a sleepover with over 200 kids from different groups, 2 Scout Troops and 2 Schools. The kids were well entertained and slept in the galleries and then they were off to District Camp at Willesley in the morning.

So onwards and upwards, lots more planning with exciting things to come.

## Grants and Fundraising Report 2021-22

We had another successful year with grants and were able to actively start fundraising after covid restrictions relaxed. In June we secured the PCIF grant funding (£11,540) along with The Dixie Educational Foundation grant (£10,000) meant that we could get the contractors to carry out the Scout Hut Renovation Project.

With the outside complete the focus turned to finding the funds to develop the inside space and make the hut easier to access and use for those with disabilities. Once again, The Dixie Education Foundation were extremely generous with a grant (£15,000). The Market Bosworth Parish Council have continued to support us (£750). Many more applications were completed and, although not all successful, the bid to reach our £50,000 for the second phase of the project continued as I worked through the Fund Raising Plan. The Leslie Sells Charitable Trust supported us again (£1,000) and we received confirmation of funding (£5,000) being released by The Bernard Sunley Foundation one we had acquired the rest of the funds. Along with our own funds we had allocated the amount was being chipped away at. The Exec accepted a Hospitality Grant (£2,667). We had a successful Quiz and Chips Night in March raising £1,522.36. The Scouts were invited to go along with Team Parker Racing and bring a collection bucket and I also challenged each Section: Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to come up with their own fundraising event. Details can be found of their amazing achievements on our website as they took place after the dates we report on for this year, but are definitely worthy of thanks and a read. The application to The Maud Elkington Trust was another success (£1,500) and the same weekend we received the news that the application for the PCIF was also a success (£11,750). If you lived locally, you may have heard my celebration of delight at the fact that, what had seemed overwhelming to aspire to raise, was actually within our grasp to achieve! In total by the end of April we were under £1,000 short of our target.

All this has been achieved with the support of the Executive Committee, the letters of support from the Parish Council, Maureen Cook our Borough Councillor and Dr. Luke Evans our MP. The architectural drawings provided by Lee Hayward of Hayward Architects Limited were instrumental in securing funds and a key part of the grant application forms submitted. Many thanks go to all those who have, and continue to support the Scout Group. It has been a year of many hours of writing applications and all the other work that follows from these, plus the organisation planning and running the Quiz and Chips Night and many a night awake trying to work it all out! However, it has been a very successful year which has made it all worthwhile. To know this will provide the Scout Group and community with a much updated and versatile Scout Hut to use is amazing. I cannot wait to see what the next Fundraising and Grants Committee members out there will continue to achieve.

THANK YOU
