3, Buxton Scout Group AnnuaL Report 2022
GSL Report 2022
This year things around the pandemic are returning to nearly normal and it is unfortunate that we lost our Beaver Colony. A positive is that Cath Pitts became the Cub Leader so that I could concentrate on being the GSL.
The hut is now being rented out for three nights a week to two groups, the Choir and Fitness. The fitness runs before Scouts on a Monday and then again on Wednesday evenings. The Choir has the place to themselves on a Tuesday.
To help out Burbage Beavers, who don’t have a Cub pack or Scout Troop, we at 3rd have teamed up with them to give their potential Cubs somewhere to go until they re-establish themselves. I would like to thank our Scout and Cub leaders for continuing to entertain their respective groups over the past year. I would also like to thank the committee, who have managed to keep things going. It has still been a challenge for the committee since we have no Chairperson and especially for our treasurer, Cath, who is still persevering with the requirements of online banking. The role of chairperson has been covered by myself and Paul Pitts, who steps in quietly when we need some support. I must not forget our secretary Catherine who is very thorough with record keeping. Catherine also announced that she is stepping down this year, so we are also looking for a secretary. We are still managing to make good progress, so committee let’s keep up the good work. Over this last year we have managed to maintain a stable environment for everyone to improve in their roles. This year we attended the Wallaboree at Gradbach in May, and the Scouts went to Lincolnshire Poacher for their summer camp. At the end of the Scouting year, we have seen a slight decrease in our numbers due to Beavers closing, so our overall number decreased slightly to 38 (41 in 2021). We are still looking to increase our numbers during the coming years, though this is expected to be a slow process, but with our linking to Burbage Beavers this might help. Our Scout leader, Paul, is relentless in trying to obtain a more permanent building so we can improve what we offer our youngsters. It has now become even more important that we recruit more leaders and parent helpers for all our sections.
I would like to finish with a very BIG thank you to everyone who is involved with 3rd Buxton Scouts Group over the past year and look forward to your support for the next year of exploring, adventure, trips away and fun times.

Cub Report 2022
Numbers
At the start of 2022, we had 19 Cubs, out of our capacity of 24. Our numbers remained steady through the year and we ended 2022 with 18 Cubs.
Badge work
Much of our programme is based around working towards Cub badges. We worked on the Bookreader badge at the start of the year, and since then we have done the Astronomer, Gardener, Backwoods and Scientist badges.
For the Gardener badge, we potted up planters to go around the Scout hut and potted seeds for the Cubs to grow at home. The Scientist badge saw us making volcanoes in the Scout Hut.
Gradbach camps
We have done lots of activities at our local Scout Camp at Gradbach throughout the year. In May 2022, we took the Cubs to the District “Wallaboree”, where they experienced the wide range of exciting activities such as climbing, zip wire, cycling, grass sledges, shelter building, backwoods cooking, circus skills etc.
We also took the Cubs for an overnight stay at Gradbach from the 23[rd] -24[th] July. The cubs took part in pioneering, made catapults, practiced fire-lighting and made birdfeeders. Cubs joined the scouts for the Autumn Camp and they did shelter building, tie-dye t-shirts, assault course and made camp gadgets.
Other activities
We spent one evening in the year on a walk to Lightwood reservoir; another on a community walk around Buxton Park and town centre. We have done pioneering, knots and lashings at the Scout Hut and spent one evening doing first aid. We finished off the year with Christmas crafts and cards.
We could not run Cubs without the help and support of our parents and Emily, our Young Leader. So many thanks to all those who have come along and helped run evening activities and camps. I hope you will agree that getting involved as adults is rewarding and enjoyable. So please continue to come along and support us.

2022 Scout Annual Report
Following on from a disruptive covid year, the scout troop has kept the same number of scouts and throughout the year has seen a steady increase in the numbers and at present we have 20 scouts. Whilst we have produced an active programme the increase in numbers, will mean that we urgently require some younger leaders to help spread the workload. This does mean a commitment to ensure we have the correct ratios of scouts to leaders.
Chilly Challenge camp happened this year and a number of scouts braved the elements at Gradbach scout camp under canvas. Many thanks to the Gradbach team for the catering.
Following on from our archaeology tour of Gradbach during our 2021 summer camp, our theme for the start of 2022 was the newly created Derbyshire Archaeology Badge our programme included a visit to Pooles Cavern, an archaeology session run by the Peak Park Cultural heritage officer Catherine Parker-Heath and a lime kiln hike around Grinlow and the Goyt valley.
Wallaboree District camp was a successful camp enjoyed by the scouts and day visit by the cubs, many different activities were offered to the scouts throughout the weekend. Scouts that had completed the Archaeology badge were presented with their badges by Morgause Lomas the creator of the badge whilst we were on camp.
Over the past 12 years we have hoarded several kayaks under the scout hut, waiting for a person to take the scouts kayaking. However, a High Peak Paddlesports SASU was initiated and we decided to
donate the kayaks to the SASU to give them a head start. This mean’t High Peak scouts now have the opportunity to do some local kayaking. In June our scouts participated in an introduction to kayaking at Coombs reservoir.
Our main theme for the summer term was Pioneering where the scouts learnt several knots and lashings, and completed some mini pioneering projects towards their Pioneer badge. With the expertise of Paul Read and his rope making contraptions the scouts made their own rope.
This year’s summer camp was held at the Lincolnshire Poacher Jamboree camp, this was a very successful camp and will certainly be on the programme to go again. The camp put on a huge amount of activities ranging from sub-aqua, driving cars, clay pigeon shooting to various crafts and STEM activities. Each afternoon there was a different display of skills in the centre arena, such as jousting, motor bike display, acrobatics, aerial fly pasts. It was a very well organised event and look forward to the next camp. See our facebook page ‘Harpur Hill Scouts’ for daily photographs of the camp. Summer camps would not happen without the help of Cath, Paul and Annabel Pitts, so a big thank you to them for making it happen.
The start of the new term in September is always busy in preparation for the Border hike competition and the Kinder Challenge. We had one team in the competition and a training team practice hike. Our team did very well and completed the course, but, alas, no trophies this year.
The kinder challenge is a competitive hike, but I have always treated it as a navigation exercise for the newer recruits to scouting and a chance to earn their purple tee shirt. A big thank you to Annabel for
stepping in to replace me as I had the dreaded covid.
We had a very good turnout for the remembrance service at Harpur Hill war memorial and a special thank you to the scouts that helped weeding and tidying up the week before.
Our winter camp at Gradbach Farmhouse was well attended by the scouts and cubs. We had a number of activities, including tie dye t-shirts, building an assault course and the art of boomerang making. Christmas treat this year was Ten pin bowling and laser quest at Macclesfield, many thanks to Mark Rushworth for driving the mini bus.
Thank you to Guy and Rob for assisting me with the programme and ensuring we had the correct number of adults to continue.
