Chairperson’s Report

In normal times I would be taking pleasure in welcoming you to Pack Horse Lane Scout Hut for this evening’s celebration of the fantastic work and achievements of the group over the past year. Due to the continuing uncertainty in the number of people able to meet inside and having hosted last year’s Annual General Meeting as a successful online event we have decided to continue this format for 2021. Please read the booklet which has been sent out to you electronically.

Whilst it would be untrue to say that life has continued as normal for 105th High Green (Sheffield) Scout Group, it should be said that the Leaders have continued to try and continue their meetings as online events and more recently, meetings outdoors where possible. This has, and continues to be no mean feat, and especially as some of our group leaders are key workers who continue to juggle their own families and work full time in challenging circumstances.

I would therefore like to take this opportunity to personally thank all leaders, helpers, volunteers and fellow Executive Committee members for all their hard work and dedication to serving our young people throughout the past year. Whilst I would not usually single out any volunteer in particular, I would like to thank Veronica who has continued to keep our Hut clean on a regular basis, a very important job under the current circumstances.

At our last Executive meeting it was very obvious that the excitement is building towards having face to face meetings and plans are in place to ensure they can happen within the guidelines laid down by the Government with the support of the Scouting Association. We hope your young people are looking forward to meeting their Section friends again and taking part in all the inhouse and (hopefully) external events which will start to be available once larger groups are able to meet together. We are very much looking forward to meeting them all again in person very soon.

The postponement of face-to-face meetings has presented some issues regarding the financial sustainability of the group and we are very grateful to all the parents who see value in the group and have offered to pay or part pay their young people’s subs during the lockdown. Whilst we really appreciate this gesture, we also understand this may not be possible for all families – thank you all.

However, the Group has been very fortunate to be in receipt of some Business Grants which have put us in a strong position to move forward, as always, the young people who meet at the Hut are always at the forefront of any plans and we very much hope to put together some great events for the different units going forward, and are looking to invest in some new equipment to enhance the Scouting experience for all concerned.

We currently have 14 Beavers, 21 cubs and 20 Scouts, totalling 56 young people on roll across the three sections and 2 Beavers, 2 Cubs and 2 Scouts waiting to join. Our challenge is always about ensuring we have the correct number of leaders and helpers to manage the groups on a weekly basis and indeed one of the questions of the National Scouting Survey which was completed in 2020 mentioned– “what help we would like to see from the National organisation” and we have identified volunteer recruitment as our main challenge. If you, or you know of anyone who would like to volunteer, please do not hesitate to contact your young person’s leader or any of the Executive Committee.

I do hope you enjoy reading the booklet and very much look forward to the resumption of face-to-face meetings at Packhorse Lane. This just leaves me to say, we all hope you and your families stay safe and well during this time.
