Good afternoon and welcome to our invited guests, members and friends of Girlguiding Central Glamorgan. It’s fantastic to see so many of you attending our annual review face to face. My name is Julie Thomas and I am your County Commissioner – some of you I have not met, others have met me via social media and some I am yet to meet. But one thing is certain we are all sisters and supporters of Guiding. 2020 – 2021, I am sure we will not forget. October 2020 when I took office as County Commissioner Girlguiding UK plight was to ensure all members were aware of their responsibility to ensure a safe space for all our members. You responded to the demand and by the end of 2020 leaders in Central Glamorgan had the appropriate level of qualification for their Role. Thank you - Think for some of you that was your first encounter with me – an email from Julie Thomas.
Getting together in Guiding was a challenge and all members reacted in different ways according to the situation they found themselves in. Some volunteers being front line staff, illness, coping with the unknown, family commitments increasing, the list is endless. But as a county you rose to the challenge of keeping Guiding going in the county. Who would have thought that social media would play such a significant part in our lives? Words like Zoom, Teams and Face time were new words to so many peoples vocabulary.
Being creative in our approach to weekly meeting was the challenge. Meetings on line, activity packs delivered, Facebook pages set up, Watts Apps groups made, meeting fortnightly the list is endless. Guiding in Central Glamorgan was determined to stay alive and vibrant – thank you all for showing your flexibility and determination to keep that Guiding light shining. Some members joined us at this time and only knew us as the leader on the screen. Travel however, was no longer an issue with Zoom our new Welsh Commissioner Bev visited many units in the county as did the CEO for Girlguiding UK. Also there were other guests to the unit including creepy creatures, story telling and the Royal Navy. The relaunch of the monthly Central Glamorgan News letter kept us connected. If anyone is not receiving please see Jayne or Emily-Jo. None of us will fully know the full impact of this pandemic nor the importance
Guiding played for our members during this time and continues to do so.
Guiding for me is about fun, adventure, meeting new people and learning. Its about working together and towards a common standard. But how was Guiding going to do this in lock down? As you can see my first word is FUN – Christmas 2020 and who does not like a Pantomime. Units were given the opportunity to join in on a virtual pantomime – Jack and the Beanstalk and o yes we did with over 650 members tuning in. Units celebrated Christmas with crafts and cooking – it was great to see our younger members having to tidy away at home and I got invited to a Divisional zoom carol service, which really put me into the Christmas spirit.
Going away in Guiding is a fantastic opportunity be it locally or internationally. Our International girls were saddened when the European Jamboree in Poland was cancelled for the second time. All had worked hard with their fundraising but fortunately understood the situation and are aware that they can put themselves forward another time. But being ever resourceful -Since we could not go away why not bring the Camp or sleepover to the home. Units participated in “camp at home” run by Nottinghamshire Scouts – a successful world record attempt, unit sleepovers and as a county we run our own I’ve been on a virtual sleepover with the county commissioner. Over 200 participants attended an action packed sleepover. Activities included – pamper night, quiz, story time, Guest speakers, cooking, Zumba the list goes on. All the participants had to do was make their den and log into the activity they wanted to do and enjoy. Thank you to everyone who helped run this event and those who supported it. I am sure you will all agree it was a sleepover with a difference.
With restrictions easing Guiding also needed to get itself ready for face to face guiding again. Risk assessment upon risk assessment have been churned out keeping up with the everchanging rules and regulation. Due to your commitment Guiding meetings are safe. But with so much time away from face-to-face Guiding in June we held a leaders Get Your Guiding Mojo back session down in Gorwelion. Its was great to see our Guiding Home back open for day activities and leaders coming
together to share ideas and meet up with old friends plus welcome new leaders into Central Glamorgan.
Gorwelion – Our Guiding Home By the sea has had work done to it. This was achieved through the Ford Project which partly funded the woodland walk. Numerous volunteers came forward when restrictions allowed and worked within the guidelines. You worked tirelessly- Thank you. Thank you also to those who kindly donated financially towards projects which included – repairing the toilet block roof and making a new storage place. There is lots more that has also happened which I sure our Chair will fill us in with. Thanks also to Central Glamorgan’s singing circle lead by our Annette and their fundraising sing along where Guiders throughout the UK and further afield joined together for an evening of Song. Who says in Guiding we cannot sing? On Zoom anything is achievable. Well almost anything!!! As face-to-face outdoor meeting were allowed it was nice to see that local and not so local units used Gorwelion as their meeting place or for an activity day.
Ensuring our leaders have the right qualifications and resources is paramount. Training were held with a blended approach used as time has moved on. Social media has some advantages when it comes to training and holding meetings. Using this newfound resource is for some of us a new skill and one to dip in and out of.
I am pleased to say that our young members continued to have a diverse program of activity and gain awards. These being from interest badges to theme awards, bronze, silver and gold awards were presented at unit levels. Although I nor my team could not be there to share in your celebrations personally it was fantastic to see the pictures and join in Zoom meetings. Also our members carrying out the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme continued with their challenges and I am please to say some completed their award including 2 Gold Awards.
COVID it has allowed people the opportunity to reflect up on their situation. Some have moved on and out of Guiding and I thank them for the work they have done in Guiding and the opportunities they have provided for our younger members. Others have joined us and I welcome you to Girlguiding Central
Glamorgan and look forward to getting to know you. Our membership had reduced during the pandemic but I am please to say that we are back on the increase.
With a lot of changes in guiding -the introduction of Safe Space and Safeguarding Trainings, the impact of Data Protection, a refreshed Code of Conduct and tightening up on the auditing of accounts which has given both Treasurers and Commissioners additional work whilst also dealing with a pandemic. Our accounts are available. My thanks to all the members of our County Executive Committee you have been incredible. Also, to all who have supported both myself and the team during this past year. Girlguiding Central Glamorgan is a growing county that is friendly and works as a team. It is only with members taking on additional roles that we work and become successful. If you have a skill or feel you can support the county, I would love to hear from you. Special Thanks to Jayne Donna and Kelly this has been a tough first year but its onwards and upwards with the counties support.
