Other matters
The Trust is required to mainlain a minimum of three Trustees. and a
management team wtth specÉfic responsibi￿leS and skills including training,
crew allocations. boat maintenance, booking and scheduling, IT and web site
upke8P.
The Trust is a member of the NCBA {National Community Boat A$s￿l8t10nj. All
volunteers. as applicable. undergo induction and crew traning.
All skippers are required to hold a current ￿tIficate in Community boat
management which must be renewed every 5 years. They must also hold
cutTent Emergency First Aid certificates.
The crew {including the skippers) operating the boats are all unpaid volunteer5.
Ob
ectives and activities
When planning actiwties for the year, the Trustees have considered the Charily
Commission's guidance on public benefft, and particyJEarty the speufic guidance
on tharltles for the provision of faul￿e$ for ￿CreatiOn In the interests of socFal
welfare.
The Trust deed asks for the provision of faalttles for the recreation of those

dealing with physical. mental and ecC￿OrniC challenges and disabilities to
improve the conditions of their lrfe and social circumstances and to ensure that
they will benefft personalty ￿ reduce their Isolati￿ or excknsion. The deed also
allows the Trustees to exlend the use of suth faciltbes to organisations andlor
families who would similady benefit from the therapeutic effects of a day trip on
the water.
The Tnjst operates narrow boats (Dandelion and Haknyon Days) on the
rivers and Canal systems of LeI￿tarshire. Both iM)ats are specifically designed
to accommcdate up to 12 passengers and cater for those using a wheelchair
and having other mobility challenge5. Modrfications and additions have been
made to the l)oats to enhance and assist our client's experien￿. audio visual
eens have been fitted which incorporate B Tttbsh Sign Language and feature
safety instructions in tr￿lIh English and Hindi languages.
Both boats also have features to assist those with other thallenges. One boat
operates from Leicester Marina in Thumiaston, the other from Ba￿OW Boating,
BatTOW upon Soar.
During 2025 the Trust achieveAi a total of 162 trips on the boats. This is an
increase of circa 11 % more trips than the previous year {2024 being 146 trips).
The ulilisation of 8ach boat drfters, V￿th the boat based nearer to the City of
Leicester fuffilling 93 trips. vthereas the boat based nearer to Loughborough
fulfilling 69 trips.
The season was significanfjy impacted by an oil spillage at Leice51er Marina.
preventing trips on Halseyon Days for the period 10th June and 11 th July 2025.
During this time, some trips were successfijlty conweted on DandelK)n having
be￿ resch8duled Halseyon Days.
(The oil spillage came from a nearby industrial site, and this caused the dosure
of the marina vthilst the spillage was deatt wth by the Envtronmenl and other
agenries).

During 2025 some trips also had to be cancelled or re-scheduled due to
changing weather-re5ated conditions. these varied from the marina being iced
up, too much rainwater (flood) and tw litde water. As aNvays. thé Trust adheres
to the guidance issued by the Canal and River Trust as to whether it is safe to
sail or not.
The ￿'Ver Soar l Grand Union 12nal, wfiere y￿ operate our kxAts, suffered
severe flooding durirsg 2025 making it at times impossible for us to operate our
boats safety.
There have been a vanety of beneficiaries who have ￿en on ¢)ur trips. Good
planned maintenance has ensured thal minimal breakdowns and mechanical
failures 0¢￿rred.
The Trust has a very dedicated team of volunteers who Servi￿ and maintsin
our boats in a good, safe wder.
We carried approximatety 2000 c￿ents in our boats during the 2025 season.
numerous testimonials and user comments show the benefits we provide to the
k)cal communities.
Our busiest months were July. August and September.
(30 trips in July, 44 in Augusl and 28 in September)
Achievements and erfomiance.
Certain users of our service (especially care and residential homes) have been
somevthat stower in arranging trips the Trust. but olher owanisations have
shown a greater incr8ase in interest and have made bookings v￿tti us.
There has been an inuease in groups engaged wilh various physi￿1 and
menlal challenges. These indude wellbeing groups, D8mentia Awareness
groups, Bereavement Groups, SEND groups and many more.
We have encouraged our volunteers to eslablish contscts in their local

communities who would benefit from participating in one of our trips. and this
has started to work well. These volunteers have become our-CoTnmunty
Ambassadors- for the Trust
The Trusts online trip booking system. which is allied to an online tic*eting
payment system, has worked well throughout 2025, togetherwlth our upgraded
website.
This means that our users can not only book and pay online. but they can also
Gheck boat availability and thoose the desired roules and trip timings. The new
system also provides other important int￿n￿l￿ about the trips and
incorporates policies and directives.
We do however still offer the optK)n of booking directy by talking to our Booking
Officer.
The TnJ5t have been very successfvl in maintaining volunteer numbers at circa
approaching 100 and their CAMlinued loyalty has been maintained by use of
constant contact.
This has been achieved by a TN5tee overseeing aspects of Vdunteer welfare
and engagement.
The Trust has further strengthened its working relationships V￿th Voluntary
Community SeNces. Chamwood Borough C(wncil and Voluntary Adion
Leicester in a bid to improve the professionalism of Trustee Perf0m￿nCe.
source new members and train Funding group members in ￿tting bid
applications for funds. A major partnership wth the Canal and River Trust has
been achieved whereby the Baklbmn Trust boats have been used wsth the Canal
and River Trust to market the wellbeing benefits of increased use of the
watenvay5 System by local and iity populations. This partnership continued
throughout 2025.
Our-supported Cruises" initiative, ¢ontinues to be successful.

This scheme offers those less fortunate members of our (XJmmLtnities
subsidis&J and sometimes free tiips on our boats.
This has proved to be very imwrtanL as society has had lo combat the
continued econ¢)mic and mental anguish of conflict and turbulent polttical and
economic challenges in 2tr25.
This has been further overshadowed by problems in Ihe NHS and gener81
industrial unrest and conflicts ar￿nd the World. This has caused a greater
number in society to suffer mental health issues, increased povety and feelings
of isolation and loneliness. These are some of the people that our Trust
reaches out to.
Our vcAunteers have worked hard to prowde trips and the environment to assist
in benefiting these challenges. The help and support of all volunteers is
particularty appreciated.
In 2025, we were nominated by the Wl as their Charity of the year, and Ihis has
brought more bookings during the Season.

During the period, volunteer members are encouraged and remif(ed to
functional sections for training. boat maintenan￿. and funding as well as other
areas.
We have aLso fomied new leam5 for dealing V￿th boat festivals and Community
events. medialpress and PR to promote Ihe work of the Trust. This has all been
done utilising the talents of Ihe wonderful group of volunteers supporting our
Trust with some extemal help a￿0.
Without the commitment of the volunteers. none of this ￿￿UkI have been
possible.
The Trust has continued to recruii and train new volunteers to maintain our core

of fft and capable crew and sknppers.
The Trust contraL*s the serwces of two self•employed provideTS.
One to control the booking and crew alk)Cati￿ requirefflents for our boats, the
other to prowde many aspects of professional secretarial backup for the Trust.
Grants and Fundraisin
The Trust continued to approach funders, organisatiffis and the general public
for donations. Our fundraising in 2025 has helped us to maintain and improve
our boats and our service for the benefft of both our users and our volunteers.
However. during 2025. it has become increasingly difficult to obtain grants and
donations due to the economic downtum experienced by many.
We are very grateful for the funding that we have re￿[Ved during 2025 which
has helped us to maintain our important seNFce to the community.
Finanaal Review.
There was a surplus of income against expenditure during 2025 Of:
£10 187.
Expenditure was £44 839 and income was £55 026.
The above figures are taken from the 2025 afxounts approved by our
independent financial examinerlaccountant.
This is encwraging as in 2024 there was a sU￿lUS of expenditure againsl
income of £10,062
Expenditure was £47.616 and income was £37.554
