## TRUSTEES’ REPORT

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2025.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements and comply with the charity's constitution, the Charities Act 2011 and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (effective 1 January 2019).

## Objectives and activities

The object for which North Clwyd Animal Rescue was established is for the promotion of kindness and the prevention of cruelty to animals. To provide a place of safety for stray and unwanted animals by the provision of food and shelter and to provide veterinary treatment and ongoing rehabilitation.

Our aim is to take in unwanted animals, to care for them to the best of our abilities and to rehome them to responsible members of the public. We do not put any animals to sleep except on the advice of our vet if the animal is suffering or if we consider, after a period of assessment, that the animal cannot be safely rehomed. Due to capacity we are only able to take an animal in if there is a space available. If there is no available space for an animal, we will endeavour to rehome these animals from home to home.

## Public benefit

The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

## Achievements and performance

The ongoing cost of living crisis, combined with rising veterinary and insurance costs, continues to drive a significant increase in the number of animals being surrendered to our care. Despite our best efforts to support as many people as possible, demand far exceeds our capacity and our waiting lists remain extremely long.

We are seeing a growing number of animals arriving with health and behavioural difficulties, and the volume of unwanted, abused and abandoned animals has risen sharply. We are consistently operating at full capacity, with approximately 600 dogs on our waiting list alone. The financial pressures facing households are affecting both the number of animals entering rescue and the number of adoption enquiries we receive — a challenge that is being felt by rescue organisations across the country.

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## Intake and Rehoming

During the year, we admitted a total of 754 animals: 303 dogs, 442 cats, 6 rabbits and 3 equines. We successfully rehomed 851 animals: 366 dogs, 472 cats, 10 rabbits and 3 equines. All adoptions are arranged through an appointment-based system, allowing prospective adopters to visit the rescue and speak with our rehoming team. Where a suitable match is identified, the animal is reserved while a home check is completed.

We took in 168 stray dogs on behalf of Flintshire, Denbighshire and Anglesey County Councils during the year; however, only 46 were reclaimed by their owners. We continue to encounter dogs arriving without microchips, or with chip details that have not been updated following a change of ownership.

All stray dogs remain the property of the relevant council for the first seven days. If unclaimed, ownership transfers to the charity — with the exception of XL Bulldogs, which became a banned breed on 31st December 2023. In these cases, the councils retain ownership and, very sadly, these dogs must be euthanised.

Every dog admitted to the rescue undergoes a behavioural assessment. Many settle quickly and are rehomed without delay, while others require more support. Our volunteer behaviourist, Adam Hobbs of K999 — who also serves as one of our trustees — develops tailored training programmes for dogs with more complex needs, working with them for as long as necessary to give them the best chance of finding the right home. We provide ongoing support to new owners, and Adam is always on hand to help address any difficulties that arise, helping to prevent animals from returning to rescue.

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## Vets

Our on-site Veterinary Clinic remains an invaluable asset to the charity. During 2025, a total of 514 animals were neutered: 168 dogs, 338 cats and 8 rabbits. We carry out early neutering of kittens from around nine weeks of age, ensuring they are unable to contribute to the growing cat population before they leave for their new homes. The clinic exists solely to serve the animals in our care, including those in foster homes and adopted animals requiring ongoing veterinary treatment. We also neuter a number of feral cats, who are typically returned to their original environment afterwards.

## Little Pydew Play Paddocks

We continue to hire out the play field at Little Pydew in Prestatyn to members of the public for dog exercise, which provided a regular source of income.

## Volunteers

We are enormously grateful to all of our wonderful volunteers. As always, we are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit help in our charity shops, on-site laundry and café, and for gardening and maintenance work. We have welcomed a growing number of corporate group visits, whose participants not only assist with animal care but also contribute to painting, cleaning and general upkeep — gaining valuable insight into the work of our charity in the process.

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## How We Promote the Charity

Our website www.ncar.org.uk serves as a key resource for anyone seeking information about the animals in our care and the processes we follow to ensure every animal leaving the rescue is well cared for in their new home.

We also use social media to reach a wider audience, promoting our events and showcasing the animals looking for their forever homes. As well as raising our public profile, our social media presence plays an important role in generating income for the charity.

North Clwyd Animal Rescue is a full member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes and fully adheres to their Code of Practice, upholding the highest possible standards of care for all animals in our charge. Membership also gives us the opportunity to connect and collaborate with a network of animal charities across the UK.

## Financial review

The results for the year show a surplus of £688,865 compared to a deficit of £330,111 in 2024. The increase in surplus was largely helped by an increase in legacies accounted for in the year - £1,011,728 compared to £188,059 in 2024. However, not all legacies were received at the year end with £932,410 included in other debtors. It is expected that these will be received in 2026.

This also increased the overall income for the year to £1,781,732 (2024 £961,086). The Charitable Activities income of £79,785 (2024: £79,826) is the money received from Adoption Fees. We do charge a minimum fee for our animals to help cover the veterinary costs which include neutering, spaying, vaccinations, worming, flea treatment and any other treatments that are needed such as blood tests, x rays and dentals. We are seeing a lot more neglect amongst the dogs coming in as strays which again, is mainly due to people not being able to afford veterinary treatment.

Other trading activities amounted to a total of £498,024 (2024: £470,322). This figure includes income from our seven charity shops, plus the onsite reception shop, the café (Doris’s Bunker), the onsite veterinary clinic, Agria Pet Insurance Commission, stray fees for the boarding of stray dogs brought in from Flintshire and Denbighshire Councils and, of course, various Fundraising Events. (See Note 5) Investment income totalled £12,758 (2024: £2,955).

7

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## Financial review (continued)

Total expenditure dropped slightly in the year to £1,092,867 compared to £1,121,247 in 2024.

Wages were the biggest but necessary expense to provide the standard of care needed to look after the number of animals in our care.

The charity fund balances as at 31st December 2025 were £2,762,643 (2024: £2,073,778) split between unrestricted funds of £2,699,931 and restricted funds of £62,712.

As mentioned in last year’s report, the decision was made to sell Hafod Barn and the sale went through in early 2025 which helped increase our cash funds.

A Designated fund was set up in 2024 for £400k, to fund major capital expenditure. The Trustees have been negotiating and progressing these plans and - helped by the significant legacies due in and the sale of Hafod Barn - are planning on rebuilding the kennels and refurbishing the existing barn, as well as essential improvements to the site’s infrastructure. This will come at significant cost and so the designated fund has been increased to £1m. It is hoped that grants will be received to help with this major capital project.

## Fundraising

The charity undertakes a range of fundraising activities through events, appeals and charity shop operations. The charity does not use professional fundraisers or commercial participators.

The trustees oversee fundraising activities and seek to ensure that all fundraising is carried out in an open, honest and respectful manner. The charity aims to protect members of the public, including vulnerable people, from unreasonable intrusion, persistent approaches or undue pressure.

No complaints relating to fundraising activities were received during the year.

8

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## Reserves policy

It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to six months’ expenditure, which is approximately £550k. The trustees consider that reserves at this level will ensure that, in the event of a significant drop in funding, the charity will be able to continue its current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised.

The trustees have designated £1m of unrestricted funds for future investment in fixed assets. This designation reduces the level of free reserves available for general use.

As at 31 December 2025, the charity’s free reserves, defined as unrestricted reserves, less designated funds, less the value of unrestricted tangible fixed assets used operationally in the charity net of loans secured on them, stood at £811K. The trustees confirm that the reserves are being managed in accordance with the charity’s policy and strategic priorities.

The trustees have reviewed the level of free reserves and consider the surplus to be appropriate in the short term, given the charity’s strategic plans and recent financial performance. It also acts as a buffer against timings of legacies receipts. The charity has reported an operating deficit in 2025 and a further deficit is budgeted for 2026.

These reflect ongoing pressures on income and rising costs of delivering services. The trustees believe that maintaining a higher level of reserves provides necessary resilience while these challenges persist.

The trustees will continue to monitor the level of reserves to ensure they remain aligned with the charity’s operational needs and long-term sustainability.

9

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## Major risks

The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks.

## Plans for future periods

We are looking to completely refurbish or possibly relocate the kennels in our big barn which houses on average 40 dogs. This is a huge project which we hope will be partly funded by grants, fundraising and some of the money from the sale of Hafod Barn and also Legacies receivable.

The general site infrastructure also needs improvement with the largest financial cost being the drainage system on site as it needs to be replaced to prevent water from the fields above Maes Gwyn flowing through the kennels and across the courtyard during spells of heavy rainfall. This project will also improve the courtyard, site drive and pathways.

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## Structure, governance and management

The charity is governed by a constitution and there are a maximum of 15 Trustees including a Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary. We look to recruit trustees who can play an active role in the charity and they are normally elected at an AGM. If the trustees think it is advisable to elect a new trustee during the year, this is done by vote at a Committee Meeting.

## _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2025**_

## STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES' RESPONSIBILITIES

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that year.

In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

- observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

- state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.

The trustees are responsible for keeping sufficient accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **TO THE TRUSTEES OF NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## INDEPENDENT AUDITOR'S REPORT

## **Opinion**

We have audited the financial statements of North Clwyd Animal Rescue (the ‘charity’) for the year ended 31 December 2025 which comprise the statement of financial activities, the balance sheet, the statement of cash flows and notes to the financial statements, including significant accounting policies. The financial reporting framework that has been applied in their preparation is applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards, including Financial Reporting Standard 102 The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

## In our opinion, the financial statements:

- give a true and fair view of the state of the charity’s affairs as at 31 December 2025 and of its incoming resources and application of resources, for the year then ended;

- have been properly prepared in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice; and

- have been prepared in accordance with the Charities Act 2011.

## **Basis for opinion**

We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (UK) (ISAs (UK)) and applicable law. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor's responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements section of our report. We are independent of the charity in accordance with the ethical requirements that are relevant to our audit of the financial statements in the UK, including the FRC’s Ethical Standard, and we have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with these requirements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

## **Conclusions relating to going concern**

In auditing the financial statements, we have concluded that the trustees' use of the going concern basis of accounting in the preparation of the financial statements is appropriate.

Based on the work we have performed, we have not identified any material uncertainties relating to events or conditions that, individually or collectively, may cast significant doubt on the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern for a period of at least twelve months from when the financial statements are authorised for issue.

Our responsibilities and the responsibilities of the trustees with respect to going concern are described in the relevant sections of this report.

## **Other information**

The other information comprises the information included in the annual report other than the financial statements and our auditor's report thereon. The trustees are responsible for the other information contained within the annual report. Our opinion on the financial statements does not cover the other information and we do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon. Our responsibility is to read the other information and, in doing so, consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial statements or our knowledge obtained in the course of the audit, or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. If we identify such material inconsistencies or apparent material misstatements, we are required to determine whether this gives rise to a material misstatement in the financial statements themselves. If, based on the work we have performed, we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this other information, we are required to report that fact.

We have nothing to report in this regard.

## **Matters on which we are required to report by exception**

We have nothing to report in respect of the following matters in relation to which the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 requires us to report to you if, in our opinion:

- the information given in the financial statements is inconsistent in any material respect with the trustees' report; or

- sufficient accounting records have not been kept; or

- the financial statements are not in agreement with the accounting records; or

- we have not received all the information and explanations we require for our audit.

14

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## **TO THE TRUSTEES OF NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## **INDEPENDENT AUDITOR'S REPORT (CONTINUED)**

## **Responsibilities of trustees**

As explained more fully in the statement of trustees' responsibilities, the trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements and for being satisfied that they give a true and fair view, and for such internal control as the trustees determine is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the financial statements, the trustees are responsible for assessing the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the trustees either intend to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so.

## **Auditor's responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements**

We have been appointed as auditor under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 and report in accordance with the Act and relevant regulations made or having effect thereunder.

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor's report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with ISAs (UK) will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of these financial statements.

The extent to which our procedures are capable of detecting irregularities, including fraud, is detailed below.

## **Capability of the audit in detecting irregularities, including fraud**

Based on our discussions with the charity’s management and the Trustees, we identified that the following laws and regulations are significant to the entity:

- Those laws and regulations considered to have a direct effect on the financial statements include UK financial reporting standards and Charity Law.

- Those laws and regulations for which non-compliance may be fundamental to the operating aspects of the charity and therefore may have a material effect on the financial statements include compliance with the charitable objectives, public benefit, fundraising regulations, safeguarding and health and safety legislation.

These matters were discussed amongst the engagement team at the planning stage and the team remained alert to non-compliance throughout the audit.

Audit procedures undertaken in response to the potential risks relating to irregularities (which include fraud and noncompliance with laws and regulations) comprised of: inquiries of management and the Trustees as to whether the entity complies with such laws and regulations; enquiries with the same concerning any actual or potential litigation or claims; inspection of relevant legal correspondence; review of Trustee meeting minutes; testing the appropriateness of journal entries; and the performance of analytical review to identify unexpected movements in account balances which may be indicative of fraud.

No instances of material non-compliance were identified. However, the likelihood of detecting irregularities, including fraud, is limited by the inherent difficulty in detecting irregularities, the effectiveness of the entity’s controls, and the nature, timing and extent of the audit procedures performed. Irregularities that result from fraud might be inherently more difficult to detect than irregularities that result from error. As explained above, there is an unavoidable risk that material misstatements may not be detected, even though the audit has been planned and performed in accordance with ISAs (UK).

A further description of our responsibilities is available on the Financial Reporting Council’s website at: https:// www.frc.org.uk/auditorsresponsibilities. This description forms part of our auditor's report.

## **Other matters**

Comparative information in the financial statements is derived from the charity's prior period financial statements which were not audited.

## **TO THE TRUSTEES OF NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## **INDEPENDENT AUDITOR'S REPORT (CONTINUED)**

Your attention is drawn to the fact that the charity has prepared financial statements in accordance with "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (as amended) in preference to the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice issued on 1 April 2005 which is referred to in the extant regulations but has now been withdrawn.

This has been done in order for the financial statements to provide a true and fair view in accordance with current Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.

## **Use of our report**

This report is made solely to the charity’s trustees, as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. Our audit work has been undertaken so that we might state to the charity’s trustees those matters we are required to state to them in an auditor’s report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity’s trustees as a body, for our audit work, for this report, or for the opinions we have formed.

## _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2025**_

## NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

## **1 Accounting policies**

## **Charity information**

North Clwyd Animal Rescue is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales and the governing constitution was adopted on 9 May 1984. The principal address is Maes Gwyn Sanctuary, Glan yr Afon Road, Trelogan, Nr Holywell, CH8 9BD.

## **1.1 Basis of preparation**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity's constitution, the Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 “The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland” (“FRS 102”) and the Charities SORP "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (effective 1 January 2019). The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The financial statements have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102 rather than the version of the Statement of Recommended Practice which is referred to in the Regulations but which has since been withdrawn.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.

## **1.2 Going concern**

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

## **1.3 Charitable funds**

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.

Designated funds comprise funds which have been set aside at the discretion of the trustees for specific purposes. The purposes and uses of the designated funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors or grantors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

## **1.4 Income**

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.

Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and receipt is expected. If the amount is not known, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset.

20

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED)**

## _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2025**_

## **1 Accounting policies**

**(Continued)**

Assets for distribution are recognised only when distributed. Assets given for use by the charity are recognised when receivable. Stocks of undistributed donated goods are not valued for balance sheet purposes.

Income from café and shop sales and fundraising income is recognised as earned (that is, as the related goods or services are provided).

No amounts are included in these financial statements for goods donated to charity shops or services donated by volunteers

## **1.5 Expenditure**

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.

## **1.6 Tangible fixed assets**

Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment losses.

Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:

|Freehold land and buildings|2% per annum on cost|
|---|---|
|Leasehold land and buildings|2% per annum on cost|
|Property improvements|10% per annum on cost|
|Plant and equipment|20% per annum on cost|
|Fixtures and fittings|20% per annum on cost|
|Computers and IT equipment|33% per annum on cost|
|Motor vehicles|25% per annum on cost|

The gain or loss arising on the disposal of an asset is determined as the difference between the sale proceeds and the carrying value of the asset, and is recognised in the statement of financial activities.

The assets’ residual values, useful lives and depreciation methods are reviewed and adjusted prospectively if appropriate or if there is an indication of a significant change since the last reporting date.

Freehold land is not depreciated. Freehold buildings are depreciated in accordance with the above rates. However, where the trustees consider that the estimated residual value of freehold buildings is at least equal to their carrying amount, no depreciation is charged. This judgement is reviewed annually.

Leasehold land and buildings are depreciated over the shorter of their useful economic lives and the term of the lease. Where the unexpired lease term is sufficiently long, the trustees consider that any depreciation charge would be immaterial and therefore no depreciation is provided. This judgement is reviewed annually.

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED)**

## _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2025**_

## **1 Accounting policies**

**(Continued)**

## **1.7 Fixed asset investments**

Interests in subsidiaries are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost less any accumulated impairment losses. The investments are assessed for impairment at each reporting date and any impairment losses or reversals of impairment losses are recognised immediately in net income/(expenditure) for the year.

Other fixed asset investments are initially measured at transaction price excluding transaction costs, and are subsequently measured at fair value at each reporting date. Changes in fair value are recognised in net income/(expenditure) for the year. Transaction costs are expensed as incurred.

## **1.8 Impairment of fixed assets**

At each reporting end date, the charity reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have suffered an impairment loss. If any such indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is estimated in order to determine the extent of the impairment loss (if any).

## **1.9 Stocks**

Stocks are stated at the lower of cost and estimated selling price less costs to complete and sell.

Net realisable value is the estimated selling price less all estimated costs of completion and costs to be incurred in marketing, selling and distribution.

## **1.10 Cash and cash equivalents**

Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities.

## **1.11 Financial instruments**

The charity has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 ‘Basic Financial Instruments’ and Section 12 ‘Other Financial Instruments Issues’ of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments.

Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charity becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.

Financial assets and liabilities are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.

## _**Basic financial assets**_

Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised.

22

## **NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED)**

## _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2025**_

## **1 Accounting policies**

**(Continued)**

## _**Basic financial liabilities**_

Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised.

Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method.

Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

## _**Derecognition of financial liabilities**_

Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.

## **1.12 Employee benefits**

The cost of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee’s services are received.

Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits.

## **1.13 Retirement benefits**

Payments to defined contribution retirement benefit schemes are charged as an expense as they fall due.

## **1.14 Current asset investments**

Current asset investments are assets which are held for resale or pending their sale and are valued at fair value.

## **2 Critical accounting estimates and judgements**

In the application of the charity’s accounting policies, the trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.

The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.

## **Critical judgements**

## **Depreciation of freehold property**

The trustees have determined that the estimated residual value of the charity’s freehold property is such that any depreciation charge would be immaterial. As a result, no depreciation has been charged in the year. This judgement is reviewed annually to ensure it remains appropriate.

## **2 Critical accounting estimates and judgements**

## **(Continued)**

## **Legacy income recognition**

A significant element of income recognised in the year relates to legacies receivable from estates under administration. In certain cases, the amounts recognised are based on management’s estimate of the charity’s entitlement using information provided by executors/solicitors and available estate accounts. These estimates may be subject to change as the administration of the estates is finalised and any retained amounts are resolved.

**Vets development fund** – This fund was used to construct and partially equip a new vet surgery building on NCAR’s main site at Trelogan, the purpose of which was to enable certain types of operation to be performed on-site rather than transport animals to other vet practices off-site. Now completed, the fund will be reduced by an amount equal to the depreciation charge each year.

**Doris Bunker café fund** – The fund was used to construct and furnish a new café building at the main NCAR site in Trelogan. The café is normally open 6 days a week and provides a wide variety of refreshments and food to staff and volunteers and in so doing represents an additional source of income to the rescue. The café also acts as a comfortable and pleasant venue for staff meetings and volunteer induction sessions. The café was named in memory of the lady whose legacy enabled the café to be built.

**Puppy parlour fund** – This fund was used to modernize part of an existing building used specifically to accommodate puppies and their mothers.

**Drainage fund** - funding for the paddocks and the run behind the new stray block.

**Paddock refurbishment fund** – This fund is to upgrade and fully modernise the secure exercise paddock used by our resident dogs with staff or volunteer handlers, dividing it into two separate areas and including the addition of agility and climbing apparatus to further stimulate and challenge the dogs as well as to assess and/ or advise on dog behaviour (with existing owners if applicable). Some fundraising events can also be held within the paddock.

**Barn roof/kennels refurbishment -** Income raised through fundraising towards replacing the roof in the barn which will be part of bigger project of refurbishing the kennels.

**Renewable Energy Grants** - Funding received from Denbighshire County Council towards energy efficient lighting and heating and an electrical vehicle.

**Hydrotherapy Pool** - Funding for Hydrotherapy facilities at Little Pydew. This funding was spent on improving the facilities at Little Pydew.
