It aims to present 3 concerts per year. Bernstein: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story| Page 2 ## York Symphony Orchestra ## 2022/23 Reviews ## Conductor’s Report (Extract from AGM minutes Sep 23) Of the 10 pieces we performed in the 2022-23 season, 5 were new to the YSO, and 8 were suggested by members; the repertoire expanded both the scope of the orchestra (both stylis�cally and technically) and the diversity of the composers the YSO performs. I’m proud, though, that the three pieces had all been suggested by orchestra members, and incredibly pleased that everyone (whether they liked the music or not) seemed to prac�ce regularly from the start of the year. throughout Spring. The Sibelius proved to be more of a challenge than I had an�cipated, providing a robust opportunity for members to prac�ce coun�ng and entering on off-beats with confidence. (This was good prac�ce for the Bernstein in the summer!) But there were plenty of posi�ves to take from the term: there was some warm, lyrical playing of the longer melodic lines in the Wagner and the Rachmaninoff, and the close of the Sibelius symphony achieved a suitably epic grandeur by the �me late March came around. Open Rehearsals will remain a work in progress. I thought as an experience for the large (and seemingly apprecia�ve) audience (not to men�on a source of grant funding) that the rehearsal was a big success, and we can learn lessons about �mings, the provision of noisy instruments to children, and so on. As a rehearsal it was less successful: especially in the Ravel, there were things that I’d have liked to have worked on if �mes had allowed. But I’ll always want to con�nue to run Open Rehearsals – they are hugely important – and the more we do them, the be�er we’ll get at balancing the experience for the children with the rehearsal benefits for the orchestra. I thought the summer concert itself went very well, and it was lovely to see such a large audience (the biggest I think I’ve seen for a YSO summer concert). Every piece was a notch up in standard from the rehearsal, which is a huge testament to the players and their stamina, as well as all the prac�ce and effort that had been put in both in the summer term but over the year as a whole. ## Chair’s Report (Extract from AGM minutes Sep 23) Covid and a musical challenge with some exhilara�ng yet difficult programmes including Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. We were delighted to welcome back Paul Feehan to play Rachmaniov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in the Spring, and to hold our 3rd children’s open rehearsal in the Summer. The orchestra has taken these challenges on brilliantly to what was a successful season. It was great fun to see another large audience of children enjoying our Open Rehearsal this summer. We were pleased to be awarded a grant by the York Music Hub Commissioning Fund which meant we were able to take things up a notch with new branding, banners and extras for the event. Page 3 ## York Symphony Orchestra ## Treasurer’s Report ## **Accounts 2022/23** The orchestra has registered with EasyFundraising, which is providing a small but steady income stream. We also received a significant dona�on (£500) from an ex-member. We received two very generous legacies, from our long-term conductor and patron Francis Jackson (£1,000), and Mr Maurice Turneclife (£6,000). These have been transferred to our deposit account, while we decide on something “special” to do with them. We also received a grant of £1,400 from York Music Hub, to cover costs associated with the Open Rehearsal. This covered the costs of the rehearsal itself, and also allowed us to commission a graphic designer to help with rebranding and publicity. The current account has a surplus of £1,227.68 on the year. The savings account has a surplus of £7015.16 on the year (including interest earned). ## **Concert Notes** For the December, �cket sales were lower than expected. For the April concert, the audience was very good. Our soloist (Paul Feehan) is a local teacher, and many of his friends and pupils joined us for the evening. In June, the Open Rehearsal was very well a�ended, and much enjoyed by the children. Ticket sales for the evening were also good. They have been prepared on an "accruals" basis, to show all transactions relating to the 3 concerts that took place during the Financial Year. ## 2. Funds The **Deposit Account** is the unrestricted fund associated with the Orchestra's regular activities. The **Social Fund** is used for handling monies associated with social events ## 3. Fund Transfers A total of £0 was transferred from the General Fund to the Big Bertha Fund (Virgin) during the year. ## 4. Expenses No committee members have made general expenses claims during the Financial Year.
