Note from Chair:
During this academic year, Ed and Hannah had to regrettably resign from their positions, but I would like to go on record to say how grateful I am for their contributions – and in Ed’s case, continued contributions in a smaller capacity. Anybody willing to give up their time and/or energy for a charitable cause deserves thanks.
I’d also like to place my thanks in particular to members Zoey Bhachu and Nici Gomme who have stepped up to help fill these gaps admirably, along with all other volunteers who have helped shoulder the additional administrative and fundraising responsibilities the committee requires.
Structure, Governance and Management
Brookhurst School Association is governed by a constitution adopted in 2018. Trustees are elected at the Annual General Meeting and new trustees receive an induction explaining their responsibilities. The PTA is run by volunteers who coordinate fundraising events and manage the charity's finances.
Objectives and Activities
The charity's objective is to advance the education of pupils at Brookhurst Primary School by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities not normally provided by the local authority.
During the year, the Association organised a range of fundraising and social events including the Summer Fair, school discos, and cake sales. All events were designed to engage the school community and raise money to benefit pupils.
Achievements and Performance
This year, the Association raised £26.6k through events and donations. These funds were used to purchase new playground equipment, fund enrichment activities (such as visiting authors), and support the school’s wellbeing
initiatives.
The PTA continues to strengthen community links and encourages parental involvement in school life.
Financial Review
In the 12 months since the last AGM, the BSA has helped raise £26.6k, through 18 different events, including a Quiz Night, Wreath Making, Bounceathon, Ice Lolly Fridays, Hot Chocolate Fridays, a Summer Fete and of course the highly regarded Fireworks night.
£6.8k was spent putting on the events and £10.5k was given directly to the school, mostly through funds for books and £1k per year group for each teacher to spend in a manner that fits the BSA’s purpose.
This leaves a closing balance of £10.1k, before 2024/2025 events begin. In summary, the BSA is in a financially healthy position to continue operating – and thanks must be granted to Gillian for her years of shrewd accounting that helped enable this. The treasurers report later in the AGM will detail these activities more.
The financial accounts for 2023/24 are available and have been independently examined.
The PTA has no liabilities and maintains a positive financial position.
Public Benefit Statement
The trustees have complied with the duty under section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission. The activities undertaken demonstrate clear educational and community benefit.
Plans for the Future
Over the next year, which will be the BSA’s 40[th] (the charity was founded in November 1984) there will be the opportunity for new committee members and volunteers who can bring new ideas to help the BSA continue to operate and grow. I believe there are opportunities to increase our social media presence, school website content, branding and advertising of the charity to drive awareness for new potential volunteers.
I would also welcome the school to think of a “larger” project that the BSA could help contribute to, worthy of a ruby anniversary! It would make a great story for the local news/newspapers that would highlight the tireless work of our volunteers and spotlight the school itself too.
There will also be a number of key committee roles to fill, with both Andrew and Gill stepping down from duties and not seeking re-election. Whilst Andrew has not been involved with the BSA for long, Gill has been involved since at least 2019 and should step away knowing that her peers highly regard her and has helped make significant contributions to the school and hundreds of pupils.

Independent Examinerfs Report Independent Examinerfs Report to the Trustees of Brookhurst School Association I report on the accounts ofthe charity for the year ended 31108/2024. which are set out on pages 1-2. Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act] and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: - Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Act. Follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission, - State whether particular matters have come to my attention. Basis of independent examinerfs statement My exarnination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view,, and the report is limited to those matters set out below.
