Tewit Youth Band (Harrogate) Report ofthe Trustees for the Year Ended 3 1 August 2024 *The charity uses the name'Tewit Youth Band" on its website, publicity material etc Charity Number: 514676 Address: Old Methodist Chapel, Strait Lane, Huby LS17 OEA Trustees (as at the date of this report),. President- Colin Gibbs BEM Chairman - Andy Williams Secretary- Georgina Fisher Treasurer- Alastair Butler The trustees of the charity, present their report with the financial statements for the year ended 31 August 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective l January 2015). OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Objectives and aims Tewityouth Band was founded in 1978. The governing document was adopted on 22 September 1983 and was last amended on 27 September 2023. The objectives of the band are to provide educational and training facilities for juniors in Brass Band Music and instruments, to advance the public appreciation and knowledge of Brass Band Music by means of concerts, contests and other public performances, and to further promote the charitable objectives of the band of supporting local charities by undertaking at least one free engagement for a charity each year. Significant activities Tewit Youth Band has continued to deliver its charitable objectives through running four youth brass bands. Children progress through the training, junior, intermediate and senior bands. Each band is led by a musical director. The age range is from around 7 to 18 years old and the ability ranges from complete beginners through to highly talented musicians, some of whom will go on to study at musical colleges. Bands meet on Wednesday evenings during school terms. Children learn how to play their musical instrument in an ensemble, we teach marching skills and the bands have a strong team ethos. There is usually a busy schedule of performances. These include two formal concerts, several town parades, Remembrance Day events, a performance at the local hospice and carols at Christmas as well as engagements at school fetes and community festivals. The bands also compete in regional and national competitions.
The band also had several successful non-playing events including the annual family barbeque and a team building day. Player numbers dropped following the Covid pandemic as the band was unable to recruit and as the bands did not meet for regular practice, several - mostly younger- players stopped playing. This resulted in the Senior Band being slightly short on numbers. However, the band saw strong recruitment at the bottom end of the organisation this year, although it will take some time for this to filter up to the Senior Band. The band continued to recruit throughout the year. Tewit Youth Band continues to enjoy an excellent reputation with local music teachers and the community. However music education at primary school level is being detrimentally affected by budget cuts and fewer children seem to be learning to play musical instruments. In turn, this affects engagement and recruitment. Our parents continue to ensure band members are committed by practising well and turning up regularly at band rehearsals, which is reflected in the successes the bands have had throughout the year. FINANCIAL REVIEW Financial position At the end of August 2024 the charity was in a sound financial position. There was £28,760 in the current account and £19,649 in the savings account. The largest item of expenditure was on the Senior Band tour but this was substantially offset by contributions from parents, patrons and a great deal of fundraising. Reserves The charity does not currently have an official reserves policy as the funds in the savings account should be sufficient to cover operational costs for several months as well as provÉding a reasonable amount towards unexpected expenditure. This is something that the charity will review going forward. In the next year it is expected that income streams will remain stable. Principal funding sources The principle sources of funding were from subscriptions, a Gift Aid claim, concert and fundraising events, donations, rental income and sponsorship. Funds in deficit There were no funds in deficit as at the financial reporting date or the comparative financial reporting date. FUTURE PLANS The trustees, main consideration remains constant.. the ongoing provision of musical education in brass band music through the provision of four youth bands and a range of public performances and competitions. srRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Public berAefit The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance on public benefit contained in documents produced by the Charity Commission, when reviewing the aims and objectives of the charity and planning future activities. The public benefit requirements have two aspects.. l) The benefit aspect To satisfy this aspect: a) a purpose must be beneficial; b) any detriment or harm that results from the purpose (to people, property or the environment) must not outweigh the benefit. It is the opinion of the trustees that the benefit aspect has been satisfied by the provision of musical education. This is done without causing any detriment or harm to others. 2) The public aspect To satisfy this aspect the purpose must: a) benefit the public in general, or a sufficient section of the public; b) not give rise to more than incidental personal benefit. It is the opinion of the trustees that the public aspect has been satisfied by the provision of the above services to the general public without discrimination. The trustees have limited personal transactions with the charity outside the benefits obtsined as members of the society. Where other transactions do occur they are done at an arm's length basis, and therefore the trustees do not consider any individuals to have obtained more than an incidental personal benefit. Social investments The charitable company did not undertake any transactions that qualify as social investments in either the currentyear or the prior period. Grant making The charitable company did not provide any grants to institutions or persons in the current year or prior period. ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities This year, Tewit Youth Band had a successful year. Our players and bands benefited from regular practice in the band rooms with the full complement of players. They worked hard and played at various concerts, parades, fetes, remembrance events, "carolling, and competitions, both local, regional and national. After months of fundraisin& the Senior Band tour to Cochem in Germany took place atthe end of luly 2024. The trip was a huge success.
GoverDing document The charity is controlled by its governing document, a trust deed constitution. First adopted on 22 September 1983, and amended on 9 October 1985, 19 October 1994, 15 October 1997, 13 October 2004, 17 October 2007, 11 March 2011 and 27 September 2023. Recruitment and appointment of new trustees There are currently four trustees including the President, Chairman. Secretary and Treasurer. The secretary and treasurer roles have a three year term of office. New trustees are appointed by the membership at the annual general meeting and give of their time freely. No trustee remuneration was paid in the year, beyond reasonable expenses, where claimed. Organisational StrUcre Tewit Youth Band is a charity registered with the Charities Commission for England and Wales. Charity number 514676. A committee is appointed on an annual basis consisting of Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, a minimum of eight and a maximum oftwelve parents of past and present band members, and not more than three playing members of the Senior Band. Risk management The trustees have considered the major risks faced by the charity. The most significant financial risk is judged to be related to loss of assets, notably the instruments. The charity maintalns an insurance policy to cover this risk. The most important operational risk is the loss of students wanting to learn to play musical instruments. We continue to consider new and different ways to attract young people to brass banding. COMMENCEMENT OF AcfIviTIES The charity was registered in 1978 and has continued its activities since that date. Approved by order of the board of trustees on 18 lune 2025 and signed on its behalf by: Andy Williams- T stee
