Annual Report 2023
This has been an exceptional year in the life of the museum, having achieved our long held ambition of developing a storage area as an annex to the museum. Since the museum moved to its current site in 1984 it has been constrained by a lack of space in the purpose built building. The original provision of the museum building was a condition of a Section 106 agreement with builders who redeveloped the larger grace and favour site of the previous museum building. However, the replacement provided was not as large as the original space for the created displays and this led to a storage problem. The initial solution was an overspill storage containerthat has been housed in a local farmer’s barn a mile from the museum – a limited space and transport a great inconvenience.
After a lengthy exchange with Rugby Borough Council to get permission for a brick-built extension (the site is in the green belt), planning permission was granted in 2022. Thanks to funds from the local authority Covid relief grants, other institutional grant funding and generous support from the village community, the necessary funding was achieved and building completed in the summer of 2023. The benefit of this new facility has been enormous with the convenience of a storage area adjacent. This has aided the variety of events and displays have been greatly enhanced. It has also allowed space to be freed up in the museum itself. One particular benefit has been clearing the clutter from the general office which has served as temporary storage space until now but it allows ready access to administrative material, and a much improved working environment for the volunteers.
Fortunately this has all been achieved whilst leaving a healthy bank balance for continuing the process of improving displays and promoting the museum’s work to communities in the area.
All these developments have meant a very busy year, dominated by project managing the construction of the storage area during the summer whilst keeping the museum open. But despite this distraction a number of display areas, especially relating to thatching, and livestock items have been improved. This has seen the old deteriorating pegboards thrown out and a complete rearrangement of the previous displays. This has made a much clearer and attractive presentation of the relevant museum artefacts. Work has now started on upgrading other major displays
Outside the museum the necessity of moving the large outdoor arrangement of agricultural equipment to facilitate the building of the storage area has led to a better spacing of the items. It is now surrounded by
specialist sheep hurdles purchased from a Lake District company. In addition life-sized metal silhouette of the museum founder, George Tims, was commissioned along with a recently purchased lockable noticeboard will improve the appearance of the entrance area.
This year’s temporary displays were based on the Heritage Open Days theme for 2023 of ‘Creativity’. Next year it will be based on ‘Routes’ ready for the Heritage Open Days in September. The museum will always be taking part in this celebration, as it did last September, the county-wide publicity for which brings many visitors to the museum over the open weekend.
A special event which is being organised for the first time this coming year is a Textile Day on Sunday 9 June at the museum, where specialist textile craft workers will be demonstrating their skills. This also ties in with the new temporary display which is currently being prepared.
The museum was open throughout the summer on Sunday afternoons as well as hosting many groups at other times for which future bookings have already been made. We especially enjoyed the day visit last summer of the local Wolston Primary School which is to be repeated next summer.
Finally, a great big thank you to all the volunteers whose generous donation of time makes the museum a viable operation, and also the new members who have enabled the big strides forward to be made.
