CSYO Overview
FCSYO exists to promote and support the City of Sheff ield Youth Orchestra. The City of

orchestra offers a vibrant programme of music-making opportunities that facilitate young
musicians to deveLop vital musical and life skills. It provides an inspiring and challenging
musical environment, equipping young musicians with the skills to progress further in
their musical study or career. For the last 44 years this unique youth orchestra has led the
region, estabLishing a model for exceptional youth music making. CSYO broadens
horizons, unlocks creativity and gives young people a voice.
The CSYO yearly programme provides high level orchestrat and instrumental coaching
from well-regarded professional musicians of national standing, a nurturing and
confidence-building social environment, workshops in key aspects of musicality and
personal well-being (such as ALexander Technique, improvisation, public speaking,
Dalcrozel and unparaLleled musical experiences.
There is no other organisation in existence in South Yorkshire that offers the kind of
experience and training that we provide. Orchestral performance opportunities in
Sheffield are pLentiful for beginner musicians, however are noticeabLy scarce for those at
hi£her levels. CSYO helps to fill this gap in education by offering an advanced leveL of

12

criticaLthinking and self-confidence and has helped many members take a first step into a
wide range of professions. CSYO is a unique youth orchestra, benefiting students up to
the age of 21. We have around 75 members aged between 13 and 21 from diverse
backgrounds throughout Sheffield and the surrounding areas.

Performance and Achievements
The City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra undertook 3 courses in 23-24. The winter course
took place in Sheffield at Ecclesall Church Halls with a successful concert at ALI Saints
Church, in which we welcomed alumni to re-join the orchestra in a performance of
Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. The concert was followed by a fundraising event at the
church halls.
At the spring course CSYO enjoyed a collaboration with the London School of
Contemporary Dance in a staged performance of Stravinsky's The Firebird. The orchestra
spent 4 days resident at Pocklington School and the performance took place at The
Octagon in Sheffield.
In the summer the orchestra embarked on its biennial foreign tour, this time to Burgos in
Spain. The 63 musicians in the orchestra performed 3 concerts featuring the cello
concerto by Luis Serrano Alarcon and soloist Andrew Reynish alongside William Walton's
1st Symphony. The orchestra also weLcomed the return of conductor Timothy Reynish
who conducted the ALarcon concerto. On their return home the orchestra performed
their final concert at SheffieLd Cathedral to strong audience and rapturous applause.
OveralL, the summer course was a great culmination of a fantastic year for the orchestra.
The young players continue to enjoy some incredible orchestral experiences, with great
repertoire, professional tutors, stunning soloists, appropriate concert venues and fun
residentials. We had 75 players sign up as members during the year.
13

The Future
The focus for the immediate future is to make the annual programme budget balance
going forward beyond the next financial year. Up until this point we have benefitted from
a siginificant gift which has allowed us to plug the annual deficit and avoid passing the fulL
costs on to members, families. This gift has now been spent down and it has been agreed
by trustees no to eat into our reserves any further. We have set ourselves a £75,000
fundraising target for the year and are taking under review the design of the annual
programme to look at ways of reducing costs, without significantly impacting the
educational offer.
