LANCASHIRE MINING MUSEUM A YEAR OF GREAT PROGRESS

The members voted to change the charity from a limited company to a Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and the constitution was adopted on the 22 January 2025

The year ending 30 June 2025 was a particularly positive year in the development of the Lancashire Mining Museum and in which we made substantial progress in the process of developing the site as a “Best in Class” visitor attraction.

To facilitate our development, we pursued funding from a number of sources to assemble a package of resources for the development of the site.

Since the end of the year, we have been successful with

but equally important we have been set a test by Heritage Lottery that we have to be able to demonstrate we can attract funding from a wide range of sources, to successfully deliver projects and to manage the funding correctly.

If we successfully manage these then we will be well placed to apply for the very large grants we will need for the headgear and other site improvements.

So, what will we do with the funds we have secured?

We are appointed architects to develop a master plan for the site. The brief is to engage with our volunteers so expect to be asked for your thoughts. In parallel with this we have now appointed a consultant to deliver a heritage trail around the site with at least 12 large interpretation boards proposed to be installed.

Very importantly we have now appointed Structural Engineers to undertake an assessment of the headgear. This includes providing a detailed plan for the restoration and is an essential part of the process of securing over £1.8 million grant we need to do the repairs.

Other budgets will expand our events and schools’ programmes and provide training for volunteers. I want much of this to be used for visits to other museums where we can meet their teams to understand what works and doesn’t work for them.

At the AGM help on the 22 January 2025, we elected the following new committee members:

Peter Rowlinson was elected as Chairman, Colin Savage as Treasurer. Our Secretary Susan Kedward was also re-elected. Nicola Vivash and Rose Mockridge were re-elected. Leslie Leggett was elected as a new committee member. Diane Herring, Thomas Hampson and Alan Wossick continue as committee members.

We established a grants group to assist the development of the museum and held two volunteer strategy meetings to secure the views of our key stakeholders. We also undertook consultation exercises to identify what perceptions were of the museum.

The committee have met with the local heritage councillors, the mayor of Greater Manchester, our MP Michael Wheeler to discuss our plans to take the museum forward. We visited other museums and hosted visits from their volunteers as we build new relationships. We are members of various groups such as the ‘Association of Independent Museums’ and the ‘Heritage Railway Association’ and the Greater Manchester Heritage Transport Group.

We are also on social media (Facebook) with some 20,000 followers.

The overall turnover of the charity has grown from £6,907 in 2017 to £ 100,438 for the year ended 30 June 2025. The total funds available to the museum have increased to £124,353. This reflects the hard work of our volunteers and the high quality of our financial management.

The Treasurer, Kantilal (Ken) Joshi, a qualified accountant has given great support during the year including acting as chair until January 2025. We wish to firmly place on record our thanks to Ken for his e�orts throughout the year as acting Chair and Treasurer.

The committee and volunteers achieved the following during the year:

The events team prepared a varied calendar of events for 2025 which attracted even more people from different backgrounds and age groups. Our education team this year has been much more effective, and the number of school visits has grown considerably. The number of visitors continues to grow, and we remain open to the public, free of charge, on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The trading income of over £20,000 comes from a very successful Tea-Room run in our miner’s cottage. The second source is the museum shop generating some £8,000.

The railway group has increased the numbers of volunteers trained to operate our locos and we have trained drivers, guards, and managers to allow us to offer the railway rides on a more regular basis as this is proving to be a great attraction to the public. The trains are also used for the school visits and the “Santa Express” in December.

The membership of the society remains at £10 pa for a single member - we currently have 30 life members, 2 international members, 86 family members, and 86 single members making a total of 204. With free entry for visitors, we can only estimate the total number of 20,000 visitors a year.

Moving away from money I have been very impressed at the progress being made by our volunteers on existing projects. The railway team has virtually completed the new siding, and a cover will soon be erected to enable us to display a number of locos. Elsewhere Paul Lloyd has put a back wall on the hangar, and we have moved many items into here including from the Nissen Hut so that a new attraction here can begin as soon as the loco display area is completed. Our sensory garden is looking good and will be completed and planted over winter.

Our events programme has been incredibly successful with some 2400 visitors for the Astley Fayre. Huge thanks to the events team. The Miners’ Festival was another great success so now planning is underway for the next Bonfire Event.

These successes are heartwarming but one of the things which most impressed me has been the interaction between volunteers from di�erent teams. I am keen to promote a one site approach so seeing active planning being undertaken by our archives team and some of our engineers has been enormously important. This is leading to detailed planning and implementation of our new attractions.

We have made a point of reaching out to past volunteers and it has been great to see Roy Pinchas and Alan Davies on site. As a result, I am now keen to explore the history of the site since closure. The site operated for 58 years but has been closed for 55 years. I

many stories about filming, how artefacts were secured and these should be recorded and told.

There is a real momentum building and I am looking forward to the achievements of our next year. We look forward to exciting new developments in the year ahead especially the result of our lottery application.

Responsibilities and As the charity’s trustees of the Company (who are also the directors of the basis of report company for the purposes of company law), you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (“the 2006 Act”). Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited for this year under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, | report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”).
