**– Charity Commission Report 2024 Lancashire Mining Museum Ltd (previously – The Red Rose Steam Society Limited) Charity no. 513511**

The year ending 30 June 2024 was another positive year in the development of the Lancashire Mining Museum and in particular began the process of developing the site as a ‘best in class’ visitor attraction. A key example of this was the start of putting together an application for the National lottery funding to improve the status of the grade 2 listed engine house building and the pit headgear. We have also applied for smaller grants to support our application.

Our website is at www.lancashireminingmuseum.org

We are also on social media (Facebook) with some 20,000 followers.

The overall turnover of the charity has grown from £6,907 in 2017 to £137,942 for the year ended 30 June 2024. The total funds available to the museum have increased to £134,930. This reflects the hard work of our volunteers and the high quality of our financial management.

The Treasurer, Kantilal (Ken) Joshi, a qualified accountant, acted as Chairman during the year. Peter Rowlinson and Les Legge were co-opted to the commiee and made a very posive contribuon during the year. We wish to firmly place on record our thanks to Ken for his efforts throughout the year as acng Chair and Treasurer.

At the AGM help on the 22 January 2025, we elected the following new committee members:

Peter Rowlinson was elected as Chairman, Colin Savage as Treasurer. Our Secretary Susan Kedward was also re-elected. Nicola Vivash and Rose Mockridge were re-elected. Leslie Leggett was elected as a new committee member. Diane Herring, Thomas Hampson and Alan Wossick continue as committee members.

We established a grants group to assist the development of the museum and held two volunteer strategy meetings to secure the views of our key stakeholders. We also undertook consultation exercises to identify what perceptions were of the museum.

The commiee have met with the local heritage councillors and the mayor of Greater Manchester to take the museum forward within Greater Manchester. We visited other museums and hosted visits from their volunteers as we build new relaonships. We are members of various groups such as the ‘Association of Independent Museums’ and the ‘Heritage Railway Association’ and the Greater Manchester Heritage Transport Group.

The commiee achieved the following:

- Loery bid for £250,000 has been submied towards the repair of the engine house and the pithead gear.

- £40,000 support from Wigan Council secured.

-

- Pilgrim Trust grant of £25,000.

- Archives preparing us for museum accreditaon.

- Visited other museums and building new relaonships.

- School visits have increased thanks to Ged Maloney

- Visitor Centre completed with thanks to Tim Haigh and Lyn Relph.

- Lamp room completed and dedicated to Steve Eckersley.

- Brown signs on East Lancashire Road (A580).

-

- LED lightening installed to reduce our use of energy.

- Electrical upgrade and work done to power Nissen hut.

-

- Underground experience - work being done to create an authenc coalface.

The events team is now busy preparing a varied calendar of events for 2025 which will attract even more people from different backgrounds and age groups. Our education team this year has been much more effective, and the number of school visits has grown considerably. The number of visitors continues to grow, and we remain open to the public, free of charge, on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

We won the ‘Northwest in Bloom’ competition for the fourth year running.

The railway group have now mastered the skills required to drive a steam locomotive as well as Diesel engines and they have trained drivers, guards, and managers to allow us to offer the railway rides on a more regular basis as this is proving to be a great attraction to the public. The trains used for the school visits and the “Santa Express” in December.

The membership of the society remains at £10 pa for a single member - we currently have life members 30, international members 2, family members 86, and 86 single members making a total of 204. With free entry for visitors, we can only estimate the total number of 20,000 visitors a year.

We look forward to exciting new developments in the year ahead especially the result of our lottery application.

Peter Rowlinson
