Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kidney Patients' Association (charity No.513446)
| report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31st March 2024
Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner.
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section
43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
. Examine the accounts under section 43 of the 1993 Act;
. To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 43 (7)(b) of the 1993 Act; and
To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner's Statement
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a true and fair view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent Examiner's Statement
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
(1) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect the requirements:
To keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and
To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 1993 Act, have not been met;
or
(2) To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Aims of organisation.
To support renal patients treated by the University Hospital Birmingham, Queen Elizabeth. To support the Renal Departments at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
To provide funds to help with Renal Research undertaken by the Hospital.
Organisation.
The Charity operates in the Birmingham area, serving all renal patients registered and treated by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
All the Trustees work for the Association ona voluntary basis. The Association has no paid staff. The charity does not own or rent any offices or building. This enables all the funds donated to the charity to be available to support the aims of the organisation.
Activities and Achievements for 2023-2024
-
¢ Funded day trips for renal patients. This support had to be stopped.
-
e Produced and distributed patient newsletters “Kidneymatters” to keep patients informed of our activities; fundraising by our supporters, research projects we have funded and Hospital initiatives. We have been able to continue this almost without any cost to the organisation due to the support of the Hospital. We now are able to produce and circulate them to patients via the DrDoctor system. There is no cost as they go electronically.
-
e We have a website www.kidneymatters.co.uk which keeps patients up-to-date with our activities and events that are taking place. It also provides access to all the Q.E’s Renal Patient Information and items on treatments and also comprehensive dietary information for renal patients.
-
e Funded patient information video for the Renal Department. e Funding the refurbishment of patient day rooms on the Renal Wards 303 and 305 at the Q. E. Hospital. Although we had committed to finance this project, unfortunately there have been some delays in starting this project.
-
e Provided for Christmas decorations for the Renal Unit and suitable gifts for Renal patients who were in Hospital over Christmas. This was a joint project with UHB Charities who organise this across the whole of the Hospital to help and support all patients who are in Hospital over Christmas.
-
e Provided tables and chairs on ward 303 enabling patients to get up and have meals together and have a place to sit and talk to other to help pass the time.
-
e Organised fundraising activities and encouraged patients to support us with their own fundraising events.
-
¢ Committed to support the New Transplant Centre with a donation of £60,000.
General.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kidney Patients' Association supports over 3000 patients. We receive good support from many patients and families who organise and fundraise for us. This enables us to continue our support to patients and the Hospital. We also have very good support and encouragement from the Hospital and Staff which enables us to continue our help to patients and when necessary bring patient issues to the fore.
It is the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kidney Patients' Association policy that we will not commit to funding projects unless we have the funds to do so.
We are pleased that we are still able to state that we do not have any paid employees and no member is given payment for their services other than “out of pocket expenses”. This enables all monies donated to us can be used for the benefit of the renal patients treated by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and for the benefit of Renal Departments at the said Hospital.
Nick Flint
Chairman.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kidney Patients' Association
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TRUSTEES
The charity's trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and regulations.
The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under that law the trustees have elected to prepare the financial statements in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (United Kingdom Accounting Standards and applicable law). Under company law the trustees must not approve the financial statements
unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and the income and expenditure of the charity for that period.
In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;
make judgements and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.
