Girlguiding Cleveland county 50 years of Cleveland 1974 to 2024

President Report

There have been a lot of changes in guiding over the last few years: a new programme, new branding, the sale of residential properties, to name but a few, and a new uniform is next on the agenda. However we feel about these changes, we need to remember why we are involved in guiding.

We want to make a difference to the lives of girls and young women and, for those of us who have been through the movement ourselves and gained from it, we want to give something back. For some of us, change is hard to embrace, especially if we feel that it is negative and pointless but, rather than dwelling on our dissatisfaction and passing on the wrong vibes to our girls, let us just get on with the job of delivering good quality guiding. Organising activities which build self-confidence, create a sense of adventure and, most importantly, are fun, should be our focus.

Girls and young women are under a lot of pressure nowadays to perform well and live up to a particular image so let’s just give them the opportunity to be themselves and enjoy their youth. What’s more we can enjoy it with them.

It gives us the chance to relax, unwind and forget about the stress in our daily lives. We can all have fun together and learn from each other and, for quite a number of us, forget that we are getting older! Make the most of your guiding. You all do a fantastic job nurturing the future women of Cleveland so remember that when you start to have doubts!

Commissioner Report

Time is flying by as I enter my third year of being County Commissioner. I have loved and had a great deal of fun throughout 2024.

2024 began with a lot of planning to celebrate the 50 years of Cleveland Girl Guiding.

We started the year with a volunteer thanks event at Kirkleatham Walled Gardens. There was a lot of dancing, laughter and catch ups. We were mesmerised by the magician who had us all on tender hooks and trying to work out how the tricks happened!

We followed this party by having a rainbow day at Ryehills School in Redcar. The Rainbows enjoyed a disco, bouncy castle, crafts and a good old sing song to end the day.

In September, we took over the new PGL centre at Newby Whisk where we had an adventure weekend. It was amazing to have Brownies, Guides and Rangers all coming together. They had chance to experience zip lines, giant swings, fencing, climbing walls and archery to name a few.

A great time was had by all, and even if leaders weren’t able to take girls to a bigger event, there has been lots of fun had and badges gained within individual units.

One of the other highlights of the year was getting out and about to each Divisions AGM, presenting awards and meeting all the amazing and supportive volunteers. Listening to feedback and what they do week in and week out.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the County throughout 2024.

Nicola

I was also invited to the Cleveland Scout and Guide Gang show at Middlesbrough Little Theatre. 2024 saw the highest number of girls and volunteers from Girl Guiding Cleveland, which was fantastic to see. The show was excellent and a lot laughs were had throughout the evening.
