4.0 SECTION REPORTS
4.1 Squirrels
The 4th Boston Squirrel Drey has only just been up and running for a couple of weeks. It’s going really well and there is a full register of 18 Squirrel with a couple of names on the waiting list.
The Squirrels are working towards the space badge, and we also have a trip to the pumpkin patch in October.
We are also looking forward to attending our first remembrance parade in the village.
We are all looking forward to a busy year and can’t wait for our adventures over this next year!
4.2 Beavers
This past year has seemed a very long year as a lot of things have changed both within the Beaver Section and in Scouting generally. In our section we are very low, standing at 5 Beavers, but nearly all Colonies are having trouble recruiting young people at the moment.
Last September saw the start of the Beaver Section activities. We attended the usual Remembrance Parade, Christmas sleepover at the Youth Center, District Carol Service. Beavers also attended the St. George’s Day in April and were looked after by cub leaders due to my absence.
Numbers were fairly good although we did have a new lad who started and unfortunately. due to bad his attitude and behaviour towards leaders, and other Beavers, we had to say goodbye to him.
During the past year numbers have gone down. The majority of Beavers joined just after Covid and so a large number either went up into the Cub Section when they turned 8 or moved house. Unfortunately we also lost a few due to the bad behaviour of one Beaver, who was extremely disruptive and verbal abusive, but things came to a head and he had to leave us in the Summer term.
Things have now settled down nicely and hopefully over the coming year we might see more join our section.
With regard to leaders, Deer stepped down from her role as Beaver Leader due to family and personal problems but with the help of some very lovely parents and leaders, we managed to keep the group running. We did have another lady, Emily, who joined us but she moved back to London. Beaver Rose who joined us as a young leader, has now turned 18 is now a leader in our section. Owl and Bear, who have been my constant companions throughout the year are also there to support me. . I could not have continued running the group without all the support I have had. Thank you one and all.
Awards:
Beaver of the Year.
This person has only just moved up to Cubs he/she has been a pleasure to have in the Colony. Plenty of smiles, polite, always willing to have a go and whatever I came up with, attendance was extremely good and worked well with others and brilliant attitude and behaviour. This award therefore goes to Betsy Hubbert. Attendance
This young person has been coming regularly to the meetings and, to my knowledge, has only missed one session due to not feeling well. It is always hard to leave home if you are tired, or under the weather, so credit goes to this person for achieving 99% attendance, and that young person is Theo Szymanski.
4.3 Cubs
Over the past year since our AGM last September 2024. We have helped the cubs to earn 537 badges. Some of the badges that they have earned are: Science Entertainment Road Safety Cyclist Astronomer Air Activity Gardeners Environmental Animal Careers Communicator Emergency First Aid level one Chiefs Also over the year we have taken part in many District events: Stump Hike Carol Service Record Breakers, with one of our cubs beating the sugar cube stacking record Stump Sleepover Camp Fire Challenge Then we have our trips out: Activity Day at Walesby PGL activity centre Chillout camp at Walesby We have also been out on many of our own annual activities: Easter Egg Hunt at Westgate Woods Remembrance Day Parade Christmas Party
Visit to Kirton Church to see the Bats Spooky Party And our much loved end of summer term Water Fight
4.4 Scouts
Over the past year, our Scouts have taken part in a wide range of activities, building practical skills, confidence, and teamwork while having plenty of fun along the way.
The year began with some exciting challenges. Scouts completed a blind trail, giving them valuable insight into the difficulties faced by visually impaired people in everyday life. They then put their engineering and teamwork skills to the test by building ballistas and competing to see who could launch an object the furthest.
Our Young Leader, Kathleen, organised a brilliant village scavenger hunt, which was enjoyed by all. This was followed by a trip to the driving range, where Scouts had the chance to try their hand at golf.
As autumn celebrations arrived, Scouts marked the season with a trip to the annual fireworks display at Springfields in Spalding and enjoyed a fun-filled spooky party. We were also delighted to welcome a PCSO and Police Officer to one of our meetings. Scouts asked plenty of questions before challenging both officers to join in games of wink murder!
The year ended on a festive note, with Christmas crafts, the District Carol Service, and our traditional Christmas party.
The new year started with a lively game of human battleships, helping Scouts to learn and apply grid references. Scouts then shared their hobbies and badgework with the troop, before turning the hall into a "Dragon’s Den" where they pitched creative camp gadget inventions.
4.5 GSL Report
As group lead volunteer it is my job to oversee all 4 sections yes you heard correctly 4 sections We are delighted to announce our new section the Squirrels. I will talk later about them. So, I oversee the day to day running of our group. Currently we have 86 young people within our group, that is higher than this time last year due to the new squirrel which is l section. All 4 section have young leaders some helping in more than 1 section. We have 6 in total. We have 13 leaders throughout the 4 sections, some helping in more that 1 section.
We would like to welcome our 4 new volunteers that are running the squirrel section Fraeya, Hayley, Viktorija and Lauree,n I’m afraid she is moving house today so she couldn’t make it tonight. We. also have Edita who has been helping in the Beaver section.
I remember standing her last year asking for any interest in opening up a new squirrel section and sadly we didn’t have any interest at all, but in the summer with the help of or district lead volunteer we put together an open day. We had about 8 young people attend and are all now part of our group. Not only did we find some new squirrels we found some leaders as well which is absolutely fantastic. We now
have 18 in the section with 4 more on the waiting list, they will join us when they reach 5 or when some of the squirrels have moved up to beavers. In order to keep with our ratio within the scouting rules we have had to start a waiting list, In order to take on any more squirrels we need more leaders so if anyone is interested in joining the squirrel team please speak to us at the end of this meeting. In October we will be going to another group to join them for a beavers and squirrel sleepover to gain some ideas for our group.
All 4 section have had a fantastic program with the young people earning lots of badges, and well done to all the leaders that have helped the young people to gain their chief scout awards I know it takes a lot of hard work. All 4 section are busy making plans for camps, trips and sleepovers. I would like to thank all our volunteers for giving up their weekend to give the young people in our group a very exciting and adventurous scouting experience.
If anyone would like to get involved in the group, we are always looking for new parents to join our committee. It’s always great to have new members and to hear new thoughts and ideas into the running of the group. We meet every 6-8 weeks on a Wednesday evening for around a 2 hours meeting. We are currently looking for a new chairperson. This role involves chairing the committee meetings and helping us leaders in running the group. If anyone is interested, please came and have a chat with me after this meeting.
For those of you that don’t know we have our own charity shop in the village. This shop is run by our fantastic team of volunteer’s. They all work so hard to keep raising money for our group. Every trip we do camp and outing is always subsidised to make scouting even more affordable to you and to give the young people in our group fantastic opportunities at a low cost. We continue to run 2 minibuses to transport the young people around. We wouldn’t be able to this without the shop. We would like to thank all our volunteers that run the shop to help give your children a more affordable scouting experience.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the leaders new and the old timers, for all their hard work that they put in, and making our group as popular and successful as it has always been and a big thanks to our committee members. I would like to say a special thank you to Emma, not only is she a volunteer in our cub section she has also taken on the role as our treasure. She has had a mammoth task in getting the books up to date we have had many late-night conversations about the accounts. I know she has many late nights pulling her hair out, but she has done a fantastic job, and I hope she continues to look after our accounts. It can only get easier from now on. I would also like to thank you the parents, for bringing your children each week come rain or shine. I would also like to thank Jayne for organising all the cub event we attend; she does keep our calendars full with trips and fun days out. Thank you, Jayne, I would also like to thank Dave for chairing this meeting at such short notice. Thank you, Dave. Our thoughts are with Faith our secretary, her family are going through a hard time at the moment. I would like to thank Catrina for filling in tonight and taking the minutes for this AGM, thankyou Cat.
4.5 Treasurer Report
Financial year 24/25
The accounts for the last financial year demonstrate that the group has continued to make a profit. 24/25 profit of £2,902.09. The charity shop has continued with a good amount of takings, with a good amount made through music magpie selling books and CDs which is fantastic. This enables the group to subsidise trips and camps for
all young people and allows the group to provide a range of opportunities.
The shops’ takings are an important part of group and the ongoing maintenance of the minibuses to transport the young people for the trips and camps that are organised.
This continued profit of the group has allowed the group to buy new tables and benches for camps, along with feathers advertising the group and are fantastic on camps and activities. It also allows us to still offer subsidised activity clothing to all young people.
We received two grants this year the first was towards camps and activities for the young people and the second one was for the shop front which has had a nice make over with it being painted and the all-new sign writing on the front. As you will see in the figures there is a profit of £2,900 from this last year, we have ring fenced this money towards the cost of Poacher 2026. Which is a weeklong international scout jamboree.
Bacs payments are working well for payments of subs and trips please continue to make sure it is referenced with your child’s name and what its for. If you are paying in cash, can we please ask that you hand it in an envelope again with your child’s name, what it’s for and the date you have handed it in.
24/25 accounts are attached to these minutes.
