Group part-funded some activities – Group Camp and District Activity Days
-
Agreed a second Beaver colony given the size of the waiting list (obviously leader dependent) – but not subsequently been an issue
-
Consolidated arrangements for the on-going smooth running of the hut. Cleaning contract has continued since Covid. Gutter cleaning and hedge cutting now on formal rollover footing. Regular checks, eg fire extinguishers, Ian Hill – sterling work with gift aid.
-
Notwithstanding that, difficult year as highlighted need for volunteers – Lost the GSL – important link between Exec and leaders, two meetings without a quorum, maintenance of the kit (QM role), Exec committee members who are not section leaders, grass cutting. Recruitment – ongoing issue – Exec, and now Kinder (Bowden in a good place). Have done Leaflet campaign and advertisements
-
Financially, as you will hear in the Treasurers report, we have gone from strength to strength as a result of Covid grants and the generosity of the banking sector. Reminder that we do have hardship fund. – can’t be complacent – new heating solution, roof and car-park/lighting.
-
Thanks to the Committee for their support, in particular Jane for the thankless job of doing the accounts, Ian for the gift aid, and the

Scouts Section Reports
1[st] Chapel Pathfinder Scouts Section Report 2021 - 2022
After all the lockdowns and Zooms of the previous two years the return of face-to-face Scouting in April 2021 was extremely welcome.
As we had kept meeting online and in the periods between lockdowns we began the term with 27 Scouts, which quickly grew to 34!
Our focus was on getting outdoors and doing as many hands-on activities as possible. This involved wide games on Eccles Pike, building and cooking on open fires, orienteering in the Goyt Valley, shelter building, rock climbing and kayaking. We also had a mountain bike skills night and a ride over Rushup Edge with the County Scouts Mountain bike team.
In between we worked on First Aid and navigation badges and many of the activities counted towards the Scouts challenge awards.
In September, the autumn term started off with the Chapel group camp at Gradbach. This was a great success and the turn out was very high. We also took part in a district adventure day at Hollowford where we did Archery, high ropes, weasling and raft building. Moving inside as the nights drew in we focused on some cooking, map reading, science and pioneering activities before an end of term night at the laser quest.
In January we took 13 scouts to Gradbach for the Chilly Challenge, whilst there we worked on navigational skills walking on the roaches. Through the term we worked on expedition menu planning, cooked some one pot meals and had a fun Circus night with Jugalubs the clown. We had a night climbing at Rope Race and visited a local food bank in Buxton to understand the work they do for the community – we also spent an evening distributing leaflets for them. Possibly the highlight of the term was a science evening with one of the parents Dr Andrzej Pekalski – who ignited, melted and exploded lots of different elements in a highly risk assessed manner.
CUBS – KINDER PACK REPORT
The year April 2021 April 2022 was a largely successful year for Kinder Cubs and saw the Pack emerge from the unsettled period of lockdowns and pandemic in a strong position. It was also a period of change and saw the Pack face a number of unexpected challenges.
Summer Term 2021
Return to Cubs after the Easter break not only meant the start of a new term, but, also a return to face to face Scouting after a break of nearly 5 months. Buoyed by the success of their Zoom programme, the leaders were determined that the return to face to face meetings should make up for lost time and this was reflected in the action packed programme for the year. The first week back the Cubs took part in a number of Crystal Maze style challenges and games that were designed to get the Cubs used to working as a Pack. After this week the pack was split into 2 smaller groups and take part in a 4 week mini-programme. This programme saw the groups doing different activities on one pack night and then swapping the following week.
CUBS – KINDER PACK REPORT
The first 2 weeks of activities saw the Cubs climbing with Wayahead Training at Windgather Rocks and lighting fires and whittling sticks at the Scout HQ.
The second 2 weeks of activities followed straightaway and saw the cubs canoeing on Combs Reservoir and building bivouac shelters at the Scout HQ.
Later in the term the Cubs enjoyed a cycle skills night provided by the Mountain Bike SASU a sports night and the annual end of year BBQ at the Scout HQ.
CUBS – KINDER PACK REPORT
Autumn Term 2021
The Autumn term started with an amazing Group camp at Gradbach with Cubs sleeping in the Farmhouse and enjoying amazing activities such as climbing, bushcraft and a night walk to Lud’s Church.
The Cubs also took part in the District organized Cub day at the Hollowford Centre in Castleton where they took part in a morning of onsite activities including archery and high ropes and off site activities including weaseling and climbing.
The Cubs also spent some time at the Scout HQ and learned a number of new games before embarking on another mini-programme.
CUBS – KINDER PACK REPORT
The autumn mini-programme saw half the Cubs head over to Peak Potters to learn about pottery and to make autumn leaves out of clay whilst the other half stayed at the Scout HQ and either made gingerbread houses or carved pumpkins.
In early November the Cubs had a night learning about Remembrance Day and, whilst the normal parade didn’t take place, we were fortunate that some Kinder Cubs were able to take place in a smaller ceremony at the war memorial.
The Cubs enjoyed a night of teamwork related activities which culminated in the mini trek-cart race which is the Scouting equivalent of the Royal Tournament Gun Carriage Race.
CUBS – KINDER PACK REPORT
The remainder of the Autumn term saw the Cubs visit Rope Race for a night of climbing and make gingerbread decorations and multi-coloured dipped candles (a new activity that will definitely be repeated).
The Cubs finished the term with their usual wreath making night and a Christmas party which saw the Cubs playing party games including pass the parcel and Pictionary (a new favourite from the Zoom nights).
Spring Term 2022
January started slowly with an extended break caused by the leaders work getting in the way of Cubs and also because of Covid.
CUBS – KINDER PACK REPORT
Despite the set-backs earlier in the term, the Cubs did manage to do some exciting activities. In February the Cubs enjoyed an evening of circus skills with Jugalubs.
The Cubs also worked toward their fitness badge and learned about healthy eating (including how to prepare vegetables) and spent a night making pancakes, which was slightly less healthy. Later in the term the Cubs had science nights where they made torches powered by their homemade batteries (made from pennies, aluminium foil and vinegar), lifted water in a vacuum and many other exciting experiments.
The term finished on a high note with everyone looking forward to the upcoming Wallaboree.
CUBS – KINDER PACK REPORT
Summary
Overall the year was a positive one for the Pack, it saw a welcome return to face to Face Scouting, it saw the Pack grow and it saw the Cubs achieve an amazing amount. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing. Covid was still around and would continue to cause some disruption and, whilst the Pack ran reasonably smoothly to the end of the year, there were issues that were starting to cause problems and which would impact on our term through to the summer holidays (but that is a story for next year’s AGM report!).
Myself, Phil, Jamie, Tom and Anna would like to thank everyone who supported the Pack during the year.
On a final note, after more than 8 years at the helm, Phil has decided to stand down as the leader of Kinder Cubs. Phil took on the role of co-leader of the Pack in 2014 and as leader from 2016. He has seen the Pack through difficult times and has been key to it’s successes in the good times. We hope that he will continue to be involved with the Pack, but more than anything we would like to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to him for everything that he has done for not only Kinder Cubs but also the Scouts and for the whole Group.
This does however mean that we are looking for new leaders to help run the Pack!
CUBS – BOWDEN PACK REPORT
The beginning of the year, April 2021, saw Bowden Pack with 11 Cubs. Following the COVID lockdown in spring, Bowden Cubs resumed face to face meetings on 22[nd] April 2021. Throughout the summer term we had a “Castaway” theme where Cubs carried out activities as if they were castaways on a desert island. We built shelters using cane and newspaper, made letters in a bottle and Cubs drew maps of their desert islands.
CUBS – BOWDEN PACK REPORT
After the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and early 2021, the Leaders and Cubs at Bowden were keen to resume with a very active programme. So with that in mind in May we went climbing at Windgather rocks
Then in June we went to Combs reservoir to learn raft building as part of our Castaways theme. Then in July we spent more time-onwater when we went to the boating lake at the Pavillion Gardens in Buxton.
CUBS – BOWDEN PACK REPORT
Unfortunately in September Bowden Cubs had to pull out of the Group Camp at Gradbach due to leaders testing positive for COVID. Later in the month we learned about beekeeping and visited the beehives in the community garden. We also went to the Fire station and learned about bonfire and firework safety. The Cubs were able to use the fire hoses. We had our annual Make and Take camp in December where Cubs used power tools to make Christmas presents such as a hedgehog house.
CUBS – BOWDEN PACK REPORT
In January the Cubs worked on the astronomy badge and in February we made pancakes. In March we had a fantastic science night with lots of experiments and we also made bottle rockets and spent an early spring evening launching the rockets in the Memorial Park. Finally we went to watch the Chapel Players pantomime production of Cinderella.
During the year Bowden Cubs awarded 132 badges in total. Our programme had been badly affected by the cessation of face to face scouting during 2020 and early 2021 which meant that 0 Chief Scout Silver awards were made.
We finished the year in March 2022 having grown the pack size to 17 Cubs and a better mix of boys and girls than we had at the start of the year.
