year to 31 March 2023 the Gurdwara's gross income w&s £123.774. In the previous year
this was £92,538. Receipts and Payments accounts wntain a statement summarising ail
money received and paid out by the charity in the financial y¢ar, and a statement giving
details of its assets and liabilities at the of the year.
Independent Examlnation of Accounts
To comply with the Charity Commission Guidance on external ￿rutInY of accounts, it was
d￿ld￿ that the Gurdwara required an Independent Examination of accounting rKords but
did not r¢quire an audit since its gr0&4 income was below the £lm threshold. Furthennore.
according to th¢ Guidance, if a charity's income is below £250.(X)O the Independent
Exatniner could be any independent member of the charity having the necessary experience
to perforn] the task.

Struclure, Governance and Management

The Gurdwara's governing document is its Constitution as amend¢d on 9 October 2005 and
the charlty is an unincorporated association.
Executlve Commlttee
The charity is managed by an Ex￿utive Committee of the Gurdwara nonnally consisting of
six members who are appjinted al a General Body meeting of the Gurdwara metnbers for a
tenn of two years. ApEK)inthient is nomially by a selection prwess supervised by an Election
Board consisting of one Holding Tnjslee and three members of the Sangal (congregation).
Holding Trust¢cs and the El￿tiOn &)ard members are not eligible for nomination as
Executive Committee memb¢rs.

Only Gurdwara members are ¢ntitlcd to selection for Exttutive Committcc or Holding
Trustee ￿sitiOns. There is no person or body external to the chatity with rights to appoint
m¢mber of the Executive Committee or a Holding Trustee.

Objectives and Activiiies
The objectives of the Guru Nanak Gurdwarn (Sikh Temple). as detsiled in the governing
documenL are to advance the Sikh religion by the provision of a Gurdwara and of education
in the principles of th¢ Sikh r¢ligion and otherwise to advancc edU￿tiOn
To meet these Obj￿tiveS the Gurdwara is canying out the activiti&s summariwl as follows:
l. Provide and maintain a daily place of worship for the Sikh Community in Rugby
Borough and the surrounding areas.
2. Organise th¢ celebralion of important Sikh festivals
3. Carry out Sikh r¢ll￿ouS c¢rmoni¢s relating to births, maffiages, deaths, baptism
4. Collect funds for the Gurdwara and make contributions to other worthy causes
5. Provide a place of learning in language, culture and religion for children and adults
6. Provide a safe and caring environment for the elderly and disabled
7. Liaise with the Rugby Sikh Community Association (RSCA) to provid¢ social and
welfare facilities for the Sikh Community
8. Repr¢sent the Sikh Community at S￿la1 and religious ¢vents in th¢ Rugby ar¢a
9. Internct with other reli￿ouS faiths lo promotc inter- faith harmony and understanding
10. Encourage and promote volunteering to help the ne￿lY in the general community

The Executive Committ¢e and Holding Trust￿S members recognise their duty to ensure that
the charitable purposes of the Gurdwara are always met and in carying out these activili¢s
th¢ trustees can confim) thal they have perfornied their duties with du¢ regard to the Charity
Commission's guidance on Public Benefit.
Achievements and Performance

activitles started to resume b*ek to pre-pandemic levels of operationj #nd functlolllng.
Dally Worshlp
Following the easing of coronavirus pandemic reslrictions the Gurdwara started opening on a
regular ba818 to allow the Sikh San8at (¢on8re8ation) to worship in the rnain hall. Prepardtion
and serving of Langar {blesseAI food) commenced during this peri<xl and was fully
functioning and the worshipers could use the dining room to share and eat Langar with
others. This food was cooked in the Gurdwara kitchen daily by SaDgat volunteers. Weekly
programmes such as18dies Satsan8 programmcs rcsum¢d carly 2022. These consist of
prayers and singing of hymns.

Celebration of Sikh F￿tivalS
From early 2022 and throughout the period of this rqjort it beLame possible to ¢elebratc in
the nonnal way many of the major festivals including Vaisakhi, birth anniversaries of Sikh
GurLLS, shaheedi or martyrdom days. Celebrations of Sangrand on the first day of the Sikh
calendar months also became wssible once again. Cultural celebration of days such Lori
were able to take place during this p¢riod. The resumption of these activities were embrac¢d
by the congregation wholeheartedly end the gurdwar4 once again, became a focal point of
the Sikh community.
Religiou$ Ceremonies
Special readings of the Guru Granth Sahib wtte pufonna in nornial ways for births. naming
of babie4 thanksgiving and b1￿￿]ngs, funeral ritas and marriages.
Colleellon of Funds
During the period of this report we¢kly worship possible on Sundays 8nd voluntary
donations could again be coll￿tea in the nonnal way. Many members of the Sang* kindly
continueAI donating by bank transfer.
L&Dguage Teachlng
Classes are nornially held on a weekly basis in Punjabi Language teaching and resumed
during thi5 period. The number of pupils attending the Punjabi language cl￿seS continues to
increase and the feedback from both students and parents of th¢ students has been extremely
positive.
Elderly Day C*re Progrtdmme
In conjunction with the Rugby Sikh Community A&wciation (RSCA) the Gurdwara provides
faciliti¢s for a Day C¢ntre for the elderly and disabled. The Day Centre users are able to
worship in the Gurdwara, sociaiise with others have a hot meal from the Gurdwara
kitchen. This programme resumed once again following the suspension during the p￿deMiC
period. This Continu￿ to be a well received programm¢ which is well attended and provides a
positive environment for 811 particpants.
Vlsfits from Sehool Children and Members of Other Filths
The Gurdwara norn]a]ly liaiscs with local schools to a￿ange visits for the purpose of
providing infonnation about the Sikh Fall￿ These visits were unfortunately Suspend￿ &8
schools were closed for long periods during the p￿deMiC and the plan continues to be to re-
install these visits going forward. It felt it provided a good opp)rtunity to enhance
community relationships and prov¢d to be educational for those visiting the Gurdwar& The
Gurwara Committee is planning to facilitate these similar visits commencing April 2024.
There have been & number of enquiri¢s from local scouts and cub groups who are also
interestal in visiting the Gurdwara to obtsin a better understanding of a Sikh place of
worship.
Visits from members of otheT faiths were suspended and therefore could not be organised
through the Rugby Inter-Faith Group.

Renovation of Rental Propertles
The Gurdwara owns six adjoining residential prop*rties at numbers 8 to 18 Crav¢n Road.
These properties ar¢ teTrac¢ houses which were fornied into two flats ¢ach. House numb¢rs 8
and 10 have b¢en m¢rgd into Gurdwara premises leaving house numbers 12 to 18 with a
total of eight flats available for letting OUL It was decided to renovate each property as and
when it became empty after te[kn￿ts had moved out. The aim was to improve and repair the
facilities in the flats in teTrace bouse. Funding for the project would be providal from
surplus funds generatoj by the Gurdwara and from flats. The source of these filljds is the
regular voluntsry donations from sangat and rental irKome from the propertie&
Fuiure Plans
The Exe£utive Committee, Holding Trustees, and Sangat m¢mbers are actively looking at
ways to further improve the Gurdwara faciliti¢s a￿1 to increase participation of the members.
Improving the Gurdwara rental properties and ensuring full i)ccupation of the properties is
also a priority for the members.
Financlal Revlew
During the period of this report the Gurdwara returned to nornial ways offunctioning and
operating and experienced an incrwe in income following a period of governm¢nt imposed
lockdowns to manage the spread of coronavirus in the previous Iwo periods. Total donations
received w¢r¢ £76,378 compared to £46,787 in the previous year when th¢ GU￿Warn had to
be closed for long periods.
Rental incom¢ from Gurdwarn properties decreas&l slightly to £40,947 compared with
£43,751 for the pr¢vious year due to change of tenants during the 12 months covering the
reported p¢riod.
Gurdwara expenditure increased from £29,207to £54,597. Rentsl properties expenditur¢
increased slightly from £8.875 to £11,218.
Reyerves Poliey
The Executive Committee currently seeks to mainlain reserve funds at a level so it can meet
its norn￿1 expenditure commitsnents for the next 3 D)onths. This allows for any fluctuations
in r￿eipts and paym¢nts.
Surplus¢5 are algo built up to allow the committee to spend on any additional building or
