As a permanent memorial to the**<br>**town war dead of the two major**<br>**conflicts of the 20th century, the building**<br>**holds sentiment to Criccieth families.**|





**The Hall celebrates its centenary in 2022 and has seen improved engagement and the attention to the Hall, which the trustees hope will help the Hall gain further momentum as one of the largest venues for audiences in Gwynedd. Being a 100-year-old building work continues to be done regarding renovation.  With the help of generous grants from both the local and national level in 2022/23 the Hall was able to make substantial improvements to the lighting for the Hall, and installing new doors are in keeping with the architecture of this iconic building.**

## **Financial Review** 

||Review of the charity’s<br>financial position at the end<br>of the period|Para 1.21|**I am pleased to report that for the 2022/23**<br>**financial year, the hall ended in surplus, with**<br>**more income than expenditure.  This means**<br>**that the hall ended the financial year in a**<br>**stronger financial position, with reserves in**<br>**our bank accounts about £10k higher than the**<br>**previous year.  This leaves the hall in a more**<br>**comfortable position considering the**<br>**inflationary pressures that the hall is facing in**<br>**terms of utilities.**<br>**The Memorial Hall continued to pick up in**<br>**terms of improved performance from income,**<br>**as the hall’s activities returned to more**<br>**standard levels following the previous**<br>**financial year, which still had some impact**<br>**from the COVID‐19 pandemic.   Hall fees,**<br>**income that comes from both regular ongoing**<br>**activities and one‐off events that brought the**<br>**community together, increased by 77% year**<br>**on year – we continue to be grateful for this**<br>**custom, and for the return of larger events**<br>**and concerts.**<br>**The Memorial Hall received £35,500 in grants**<br>**during the financial year – these grants have**<br>**been received from Criccieth Town Council,**<br>**Cadw, Croeso Cynnes for Warm Spaces in the**<br>**winter of 2022, Gwynedd Council , and the**<br>**Welsh Government.  The hall continues to**<br>**immensely grateful for the continued support**<br>**for the Hall through these organisations, with**<br>**the fees being used for improvements to the**<br>**hall, such as new doors and lighting.**<br>**Donations were down year on year for a**<br>**second year, and while roughly still in line**<br>**with standard levels for the hall over the**<br>**longer term, it is a very important**<br>**contribution for the hall that the committee**<br>**need to focus on in terms of growing and**<br>**reversing a downward trend.  Nevertheless,**<br>**we are grateful for all donations and support**<br>**provided to the Hall, from both regular**<br>**payments and one‐off exceptional donations.**<br>**Expenditure was up year on year, going from**<br>**just under £68k in 2022 to £72k in 2023.**<br>**With the return of larger concerts and events,**<br>**the Hall saw a return of costs such as**<br>**fundraising or entertainment costs for running**<br>**some concerts and events in the year.  The**<br>**committee continues to review the**|

|||**commercials of all events run by the hall itself**<br>**to ensure that the right balance is struck in**<br>**terms of cost vs. benefit to the community.**<br>**General maintenance and repairs were lower**<br>**than the previous year, as works in the**<br>**previous year were considerable such as to**<br>**the roof in 2022.**<br>**There was also an increase of equipment**<br>**purchases that were made possible following**<br>**one off donations or grants, most of this in**<br>**2023 was from the new lighting in the main**<br>**hall.  Further to this, most other cost increases**<br>**year on year come from the increased activity**<br>**and usage of the hall + inflationary changes.**|

**Respective responsibilities** The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. **of Trustees and Examiner** The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: • examine the accounts under section 145 of the charities act. • to follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145 (5)(b) of the Charities Act and • to state whether matters have come to my attention. **Basis of independent** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given **examiner's statement** by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters.
