Annual Report 2022-2023
Membership:
Membership numbers have risen slightly since the low point following the Covid 19 pandemic. Some former members have returned, and we have been joined by several new ones. We currently (November 2023) have just over 60 active members.
Concerts:
In December 2022 we presented a concert of music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, contributing to the celebration of the 150[th] anniversary of his birth. Works included Dona Nobis Pacem, Five Mystical Songs, Let us now Praise Famous Men, and O be Joyful.
In June 2023 our concert was of American choral music. Including Jazz, Spirituals and works by Morten Lauridsen ( Nocturnes), Florence Price, and others.
Both concerts were well-attended and critically well-received. Activities:
Social and fundraising events have included a quiz, and an evening of Christmas music, including audience participation, at Ludlow Brewery, when we also bade farewell to our accompanist and Assistant Music Director of 25 years, Steve Dunachie. We visited several local care homes to sing carols in the run up to Christmas. In May we took a market stall selling plants and produce and we held a summer afternoon tea in a member’s garden. Our Ludlow New Voices fund supported various singing activities in local primary schools.
Highlights and low points:
In January 2023 we were delighted to welcome Marion Bettsworth as our new accompanist and Assistant Music Director. Marion plays both the piano and the organ and is a talented and sensitive musician.
During the year we received a very significant legacy from a former member of the Society which will make a considerable difference to our finances. We are extremely grateful for this, as it will enable us to support the presentation of high-quality concerts for several years to come.
We were saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of our former Treasurer, but heartened by the fact that a relatively new member has stepped willingly and efficiently into that role.
Supporters:
The Society is grateful for the support it receives from volunteers, audience members, and many others. We are also indebted to our Music Director and Assistant Music Director, who work closely together to ensure that we achieve our best for members and our audiences.
